Gabrielle Union Joins Cast of Diablo Cody-Produced ‘Forbidden Fruits’
Diablo Cody
Jennifer’s Body and Lisa Frankenstein scribe Diablo Cody is set to produce the feature directorial debut Forbidden Fruits by Meredith Alloway, and Deadline reports that Gabrielle Union (Breaking In) has joined the already stacked cast.

Forbidden Fruits is currently in production now, with IFC Films and Shudder set to release in 2026.

The film is an adaptation of playwright Lily Houghton’s stageplay Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin and Through Her We All Die. Alloway and Houghton are co-adapting.

Forbidden Fruits follows “Free Eden employee Apple, who secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours – with fellow fruits Cherry and Fig. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges their ‘girl boss’ ways, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.“

Character details remain under wraps, but Union joins previously announced cast members Lili Reinhart...

Mike Colter, Raúl Castillo, Matt Frewer & Thomas Lennon Round Out Cast Of QC Entertainment’s ‘The Casket Girls’
Image
Exclusive: QC Entertainment, the company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, has completed the Victoria, BC shoot on horror film The Casket Girls with four major additions to the cast: Mike Colter (Evil), Raúl Castillo (Smile 2), Matt Frewer (Perry Mason), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!).

As previously announced, Gabrielle Union leads the ensemble. Lennon also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Ben Garant, his partner on Night at the Museum and numerous other projects, with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), who directed the film.

The Casket Girls is inspired by true events involving a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically,...

Grieving Grandparents Turn to Satanism in This Fiendish Underseen Horror
Image
The scariest horrormovies are often the ones that make you feel the most. Those movies that unnerve viewers on multiple levels, drawing on emotions like nostalgia and sadness to make its central horror hauntingly relatable for the audience. Many scary movies try to imbue their fear with this kind of emotion, but few do it as dreadfully well as Justin G. Dyck's Anything for Jackson. It's an AMC+ film built on subverting expectations; the main antagonists are an elderly couple, two surprisingly endearing people who pair their heartfelt motivations with a nefarious plot to kidnap and use a pregnant woman in their satanic ritual.

Justin G. Dyck has almost 40 directing credits to his name, and most of those credits have been on TV movie romances with titles like Christmas Wedding Planning, Christmas with a View, A Very Country Wedding, and Art of Falling in Love… but recently, Dyck has been shifting gears. In 2020, he brought us the supernatural horror movie Anything for Jackson (pictured above), which was released through the Shudder streaming service. Now, Deadline reports that Dyck will be directing the haunted house movie William for Aperture Entertainment.

William is an adaptation of a novel by Andrew Pyper, which was written under the author’s sci-fi/thriller pen name Mason Coile. Pyper is writing the screenplay with Chris Sivertson, whose previous writing credits include The Image of You,...

Aperture Entertainment Adapting Mason Coile Thriller Novel ‘William’; Justin Dyck To Direct
Image
Exclusive: Aperture Entertainment has optioned rights to bestselling author Andrew Pyper’s recently published novel William, with Justin Dyck set to direct.

Penned under Pyper’s sci-fi/thriller pen name Mason Coile, William hit store shelves September 3 via Putnam.

The author and Chris Sivertson will adapt the novel as a thriller to be shot in Canada.

A contained sci-fi horror film that blends the worlds of Ex Machina and The Amityville Horror, William is set in a timely haunted house story in which the haunting is AI.

The New York Times Book Review praised the novel, calling it “a cyber-horror tale that combines cerebrality and carnage … a twist on The Shining in which the house is haunted by a ghost in the machine. … Coile [elevates the genre] with meticulously unsettling prose and a knowing dissection of character that transcends stereotype.”

Gabrielle Union makes her return to horror in new horror film The Casket Girls
Image
If you're a fan of Gabrielle Union, you'll be glad to know that this talented actress has just set her next project. It's a horror film titled The Casket Girls, and she will not only star but also produce.

QC Entertainment is the production company behind the movie. This company is best known for co-producing the hit psychological horror film Get Out. Justin Dyck, who you might recognize as the director of the 2020 supernatural horror flick Anything for Jackson, is signed on to direct. In addition, Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant wrote the film's original script, which Dyck and Keith Cooper later revised.

The Casket Girls is inspired by a true story. It's inspired by the true story of a group of women who were sent from France to New Orleans to marry colonists in the early 1700s. They were called the "Casket Girls" because they brought with them...

‘The Casket Girls’ – Gabrielle Union to Star in New Horror Movie from ‘Anything for Jackson’ Director
Justin Dyck, the director behind 2020 horror darling Anything for Jackson, has lined up his next horror feature, The Casket Girls. Deadline reports today that the new movie has found its star in Gabrielle Union.

The Casket Girls was written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Dyck.

The story is inspired by a true story, the real-life Casket Girls of New Orleans. The moniker refers to the young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s, bearing luggage resembling caskets. Because their arrival coincided with an uptick in the city’s murder rate, the girls were blamed and accused of being demons or vampires. The city imprisoned the girls in the attic of the Vatican-controlled Ursuline Convent, which still exists today.

It’s the precise type of historical tale that feels ripe for horror.

The Casket Girls: Gabrielle Union to star in horror film scripted by Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant
Thomas Lennon
The writing duo of Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant are best known for their work on comedies and family friendly projects: Reno 911!, Taxi (2004), The Pacifier, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Let’s Go to Prison, Balls of Fury, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Baywatch (2017), Night at the Museum, and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. But they’ve also written the horror comedy Hell Baby, and Garant has written the horror films The Veil and Jessabelle. So it’s not entirely off brand to hear that they wrote the initial screenplay for the upcoming horror film The Casket Girls, with Gabrielle Union (Breaking In) on board to star and executive produce.

Deadline reports that Justin G. Dyck will be directing The Casket Girls and has done script revisions with Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson). Dyck has a lot of directing credits to his name, most of them being on romantic TV movies,...

Aperture Entertainment Signs Kyle McConaghy & Joe DeBoer, Filmmakers Behind Toronto-Bound Horror Thriller ‘Dead Mail’
Image
Exclusive: Adam Goldworm’s Aperture Entertainment has signed Kyle McConaghy and Joe DeBoer, a Missouri filmmaking duo whose acclaimed horror thriller Dead Mail will soon have its Canadian premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival.

A mainstay on the genre festival circuit since its premiere this year at SXSW, Dead Mail has won a number of awards, including Best Film and Best Director at UK Fright Fest, and is currently rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Still in search of distribution, the film watches as an ominous help note finds its way to a 1980s post office, connecting a dead letter investigator to a kidnapped keyboard technician.

We’re told the viewing experience is as if you found a vintage Fincher VHS, lost to time, in the back of your ’80s video store. Veteran genre producers Roy Lee and Steven Schneider took to the film so strongly...

Freaky Satanist Horror 'Anything for Jackson' Brings Back a Grandson
Sheila McCarthy and Julian Richings in Anything for Jackson (2020)
"We can do this! He's coming back to us..." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for a super freaky new horror thriller titled Anything for Jackson, from filmmaker Justin G. Dyck. This originally premiered at the Fantasia and Nightstream Film Festivals last year, and it's arriving on VOD soon. A bereaved Satanist couple kidnap a pregnant woman so they can use an ancient spellbook to put their dead grandson's spirit into her unborn child but end up summoning more than they bargained for. This looks like a crazy twist on the unusual "we want to bring back our kid" story, involving grandparents and some truly messed up evil, making them regret their resurrection. The film stars Sheila McCarthy, Julian Richings, Konstantina Mantelos, and Yannick Bisson. This looks like it has unsettling scares and crazy twists once it gets going. Indie Horror Month 2021: 13 Great Indie Films Currently Streaming on Shudder
Image
Hello, everyone! Throughout the month of April, I’m going to be offering up some streaming suggestions in support of our ongoing Indie Horror Month celebration, and today, we’re celebrating 13 different films that are currently streaming on Shudder. For this list, I tried to offer up some titles that have either been on the platform for a while now, so maybe they’ve gotten lost in the mix (since Shudder regularly updates their service with so much killer content), or they’ve generally just flown under the radar of most fans. So, while I absolutely adore movies like Host or Mandy, I felt like horror fans in general are already tuned in to those masterpieces, and I wanted to give a few other films a shot at glory here as well.

Check out this great array of films and be sure to check back here on Daily Dead every...

Interview: Director Justin G. Dyck Discusses Defying Expectations and More for Anything For Jackson
Image
After a successful festival run, Justin G. Dyck’s Anything for Jackson made its debut on Shudder earlier this month. Starring Julian Richings, Sheila McCarthy, and Konstantina Mantelos, the film is centered around a grieving pair of grandparents who kidnap a young woman in hopes of transferring the soul of their deceased grandson into her soon-to-be born child, and as expected, things don’t exactly go according to plan.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Dyck about his latest directorial effort, and he discussed his collaborative process with the film’s writer, Keith Cooper, bringing on his talented ensemble for Anything for Jackson, the inspiration behind the film’s collection of spooky spectres, and more.

Thanks for taking time to chat today, Justin, and great job on Anything for Jackson. There's just some really great character stuff that you guys worked into this story that balances out against all the genre elements,...

Anything for Jackson Review: Grandparents Attempt a Resurrection in Unapologetic Horror Tale
Sheila McCarthy
The day Audrey (Sheila McCarthy) and Henry Walsh’s (Julian Richings) grandson Jackson died was the day they sold their souls to the Devil—figuratively speaking, of course. It wasn’t until they joined a Satanist church run by a bunch of posers in a community center that the idea to bring him back became more than simply a fantasy. That’s where they learned about an ancient book of dark magic possessing the means to do so and how they might find it. With all questions about its legitimacy evaporated after one of its spells inexplicably helps a dead crow fly again, the time finally arrived to fulfill their intention of transferring Jackson’s soul into another woman’s (Konstantina Mantelos’ Becker) unborn baby so that he may live once more.

We meet this trio on the day of the kidnapping only to learn the Walshs left nothing to chance.
