First-year UCLA head football coach DeShaun Foster was a man of few words today at Big Ten media day. His formal introduction as Chip Kelly’s replacement was, shall we say, short on substance.

Foster began his opening statement in typical coach-speak, expressing the usual “excitement” platitudes about becoming UCLA’s head coach and its start this fall as a member of the Big Ten conference for the first time.

Then he froze, and mentioned UCLA’s location in Los Angeles. Thankfully, he didn’t bring up beating Medicare.

“I’m sure you guys don’t know too much about UCLA and our football program, but we’re in L.A. Um… It’s us and USC. We, um…I’m just basically excited, really. That’s it. Any questions?”

Social media wags pounced.

“If there isn’t a UCLA Football- “We’re in L.A., any questions?” shirt, then...

Those UCLA fans who wanted Chip Kelly’s departure got their wish Friday, but not in the way they expected.

In a surprising move, Kelly exited his head coaching job at UCLA for a perceived step down, agreeing to become the offensive coordinator for Ohio State.

The timing leaves UCLA and recruits in a bind. The national letter of intent signing period was Feb. 7, spring practice is approaching, and the coaching carousel has already churned. That leaves UCLA in a poor position heading into its first season in the Big Ten, where it will eventually face their old coach in a game.

Kelly had reported interest in talking with NFL teams about an offensive coordinator position. But taking the Ohio State job is viewed in many quarters as a strange step down.

In a message to UCLA alumni and fans, Bruins athletic director Martin Jarmond said a national search for a replacement had already commenced.

Spencer couldn't catch any breaks, let alone passes.

He may be a hero in both Crenshaw and Beverly Hills but Spencer discovered he's just damaged goods to college-football recruiters on All American Season 2 Episode 12.

Yeah, that sucks. But it's just as well that Spencer learned the reality of college football.

A school has 25 scholarships a year to give to recruits. And the coaching staff needs to succeed in their selection of players or they'll be looking for work, even before those players on whom they misfired.

It's hard to blame UCLA, and all Spencer's other former suitors, for backing off on a receiver who can't raise his arms without suffering shooting pain.

Spencer got the message early and often but didn't seem to absorb it too well.

The doctor hedged for all he was worth about whether Spencer could get back to where he was before the shooting.

Kapernick’s agent, Jeff Nailey, and PR director Jasmine Windham sent out a Q&a press release on Thursday titled “Facts to Address The False Narratives Regarding Colin Kaepernick.” The release was apparently issued in frustration that the Pittsburgh Steelers are choosing to start an undrafted rookie, Devin Hodges from tiny Samford College, rather than enlist the former 49ers starter.

Hodges will make his debut this weekend. He is just the latest second and third-stringer to get a shot at playing in the NFL while the former 49er sits and stews.
