Time Travel Is Dangerous Review: Vintage Shop Heists Meet Cosmic Chaos
Image
A battered bumper car tucked behind dusty bins becomes the unlikely vessel for history’s greatest shoplift in Time Travel Is Dangerous, a British sci-fi mockumentary that treats the absurd as routine. In the cramped backroom of ChaChaCha—a Muswell Hill emporium stacked with faded dresses and chipped teacups—best friends Ruth (Ruth Syratt) and Megan (Megan Stevenson) uncover a rickety time machine and embark on a gleeful spree through the Visigoth era, Napoleonic battlefields and even Wild West saloons. The film’s deadpan realism, captured in faux-documentary “interview” segments, renders each improbable caper as banal as choosing tomorrow’s shop display.

Director and co-writer Chris Reading orchestrates this capricious romp with a wink: Stephen Fry’s clipped narration punctuates moments of historical plunder, while thrift-shop interiors and VHS-tinted miniatures conjure an offbeat nostalgia.

Syratt and Stevenson play versions of themselves with perfectly calibrated indifference, their blasé delivery heightening every anachronistic find.

Time Travel is Dangerous Mini-Interview with stars Ruth Syratt & Megan Stevenson
Johnny Vegas
Time Travel is Dangerous centers around friends Ruth and Megan who run a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. When they stumble across a time machine, it occurs to them that stock is much cheaper if they ‘borrow’ from the past – well, it’s free. They don’t want to change history, or rob banks, they just want to find a nice Victorian lamp or an authentic 80s bum bag without getting sucked into the hellish time-space vortex that is “the Unreason”. The thing is, Time Travel Is Dangerous.

The movie stars Johnny Vegas, Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Sophie Thompson, Mark Heap, Brian Bovell, Tony Way, Guy Henry, Laura Aikman, Kiell Smith-Bynoe and is narrated by Stephen Fry.

Here at Love Horror we got a chance to quiz some of the creatives behind the brand new Sci-Fi comedy and run them through a set of quick fire questions.

Time Travel Is Dangerous - Jennie Kermode - 19613
Ruth Syratt
“I’d say it’s a wormhole, but I don’t actually know what a wormhole is.”

Ruth (Ruth Syratt) and Megan (Megan Stevenson) are not trained time travellers. A pair of middle aged vintage shop owners who happened across a time machine when it was left out by the bins, they immediately saw its potential to boost their business. Why spend hours each day hunting around in our time for valuable objects that they could pick up in an instant simply by popping back to the appropriate period in history? Naturally they treat it as a trade secret, though there isn’t really any trading involved – they just help themselves and then leg it – but as their modest Muswell Hill enterprise fills up with museum-quality artefacts, they nonetheless begin to attract attention.

Delivered in traditional English deadpan style, with supporting narration by Stephen Fry which owes a lot to the BBC’s adaptation of.

Time Travel is Dangerous review – likable mockumentary is Back to the Future meets Bargain Hunt
Ruth Syratt
Real-life vintage shop owners Ruth Syratt and Megan Stevenson raid the past for sellable trinkets in this charmingly funny, quintessentially British comedy

Here is a very silly and very likable British mockumentary, one that – like Ruth and Megan, the two real-life Muswell Hill vintage-shop mavens at its centre – lovingly mixes and matches multifarious styles. Director and co-writer Chris Reading adopts a little The Office deadpan, some Shaun of the Dead bathos, a heap of Terry Gilliam, and even shoplifts a shot from Wes Anderson. If the resulting low-budget assemblage still bears these nametags and has the odd stray thread showing, it also has a persistent charm of its own.

The ChaChaCha vintage emporium (which really exists) is limping along until owners Ruth (Ruth Syratt) and Megan (Megan Stevenson) stumble on a time machine in the form of a souped-up bumper car – and thus an infinite supply of merchandise from whichever epoch they desire.

Time Travel is Dangerous (2024) Review
Image
As films like The Terminator, The Time Machine, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, Back to the Future 2 and Hot Tub Time Machine 2 have proven, going backwards and forwards across history or into the far future can be perilous to both personal and universal health. But it has taken until now for a movie to say it out loud, and that movie is the brilliant British comedy Sci-Fi usurpingly titled Time Travel is Dangerous.

The set up is simple enough and starts when two friends Ruth and Megan find a time travel machine by the bins behind their vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The scientific marvel, which is actually a modified dodgem, takes them on jaunts across history where they pilfer anything they can from the bemused locals of the past to sell in their shop. Seemingly onto a great thing the pals are oblivious not only to how the time...

‘Time Travel Is Dangerous’ Review
Image
Stars: Ruth Syratt, Megan Stevenson, Brian Bovell, Stephen Fry, Johnny Vegas, Sophie Thompson, Guy Henry, Jane Horrocks, Mark Heap, Tony Way | Written by Chris Reading, Anna-Elizabeth, Hillary Shakespeare | Directed by Chris Reading

Time Travel Is Dangerous is about to become your new favourite British sci-fi comedy blending mockumentary stylings with surreal, low-budget charm. Directed by Chris Reading and co-written with Anna-Elizabeth and Hillary Shakespeare, the latter two of those names, are no strangers to this reviewer.

Time Travel Is Dangerous stars Ruth Syratt and Megan Stevenson as fictionalized versions of themselves, running a vintage shop in Muswell Hill. The premise is delightfully absurd: the duo stumbles upon a discarded fairground dodgem that just so happens also to be a time machine, which they use to “borrow” historical artefacts to sell in their shop, as time travel movies have told us in the past though this has catastrophic consequences due to...

Laroy, Texas Review | A Must-See Thriller with a Superb Cast
Image
Excellent performances by all the actors elevate this darkly funny and thrilling cat-and-mouse game. A phenomenal opening scene sets the stage for unexpected twists in this must-see neo-noir comedy. Dylan Baker stuns as a calculating killer in a story that goes from funny to gasp-inducing.

A meek hardware shop owner impersonates a hit man after learning his duplicitous wife has been having an affair. Laroy, Texas channels the Coen brothers' Blood Simple and Fargo in a hilarious black comedy thriller with disturbing and tragic twists. Hollywood veterans John Magaro, Steve Zahn, and a terrifying Dylan Baker are superb in a film that continually surprises. You're hooked from the start as a seemingly innocuous beginning goes in a truly unexpected direction. Laroy, Texas is a must-see and one of the year's best films to date.

The film also has one of the best opening scenes in recent memory which we won't...

Dylan Baker Is Absolutely Brilliant as a Hit Man in Laroy, Texas
Image
Baker delivers a career-best performance, setting the tone with a thrilling opening scene in the black comedy Laroy, Texas. Magaro's friendship with Baker led to a perfect casting choice, with the film gaining Coen brothers comparisons for its brilliance. Working with Shane as director was a seamless process, with the trio of veteran actors bringing the character dynamics to life.

Dylan Baker delivers one of the best performances of his illustrious 40-year career as Harry, a seemingly unassuming but terrifying hit man in the brilliant black comedy, Laroy, Texas. John Magaro stars as Ray, a pushover hardware store owner who's accidentally mistaken for Harry. He decides to take Harry's contract after being told by Skip (Steve Zahn), a goofy private investigator, that his wife (Megan Stevenson) has been having an affair. Harry's not happy someone's stolen his job and decides to find the impersonator.

Baker was recruited for the film by Magaro.

Laroy, Texas Review: A Violent Comedy Of Errors Whose Cast Absolves The Convoluted Plot
Image
Laroy, Texas is a twisted town in a circle of Hell with dark characters and multiple homicides. Ray, mistaken for a hitman, embarks on a chaotic journey with the impish P.I. Skip. The film's clever complexities lead to confusion, resembling Coen Brothers' work but lacks trust in dark themes.

Laroy, Texas introduces a smirking hitman in a familiar but effectively tense opening that ends with the man burying the remains of his night's work. As Harry, played unnervingly by Dylan Baker, digs, he receives a call from another client, "Where's Laroy?" he asks indignantly. The cut to the title tells us, as does a montage of ranch shops, one with "Texas" painted on it, and the twanging guitar that picks up. As does Brad Leland grinning at his car dealership with the name Adam Ledoux when we all know it's Buddy Garrity. Where's Laroy, Harry? "Texas forever, creep."

John Magaro on His Coen Brothers Type Film with Steve Zahn and Dylan Baker
Image
Laroy, Texas stars John Magaro, Steve Zahn, and Dylan Baker in a hilarious dark comedy that's one of the best films of the year so far. Magaro plays Ray, a meek hardware store owner who's mistaken for a hit man after Skip (Zahn), a goofy private investigator, tells him that his wife (Megan Stevenson) is having an affair. The film is reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' Blood Simple and Fargo, with tragic themes that have unexpected twists.

Magaro spoke with us at length about producing the film with writer/director Shane Atkinson in his feature debut. "I've worked with a lot of first-time filmmakers," said Magaro, humorously adding, "It took a few years. It wasn't easy. It's hard to get people to invest in a first-time filmmaker. And it's not like I'm bringing in a ton of money. I do indie films. I've had the good fortune of doing some good stuff,...

Dylan Baker at an event for Palindromes (2004)
Laroy, Texas review – Coen-esque crime farce is a hyperactively fun ride
Dylan Baker at an event for Palindromes (2004)
Feature debutant writer-director Shane Atkinson toys with a hapless cast of schemers and low-lifes in this neo-noir, featuring a scene-stealing Dylan Baker as a vexed hitman

Sadsack husbands, missing suitcases, devious strippers, destabilising conversations with hitmen doubling up as metaphysical emissaries: this hyperactively structured crime thriller lines up many of the usual noir suspects, but loves messing with them. Often scenes end with left-field segues, such as when a cocky Pi suddenly finds his car towed by a couple of insolent cops. It’s not so much that the inhabitants of the Texan outpost of the title are caught in the genre’s meaningless existential whirlpool; rather, they’re being actively toyed with by some mischievous prankster deity (Aka debut director Shane Atkinson).

Just before his vehicle is impounded, Skip the detective (Steve Zahn) gives tragic spouse Ray (John Magaro) the skinny: his wife Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) is keeping a...

Laroy, Texas Review: John Magaro and Steve Zahan Enliven Coen Brothers Karaoke Night
Image
A darkly comic crime odyssey set in middle-of-nowhere America, writer-director Shane Atkinson’s Laroy, Texas wears its Coen brothers influence on its sleeve. And while it never quite reaches the hilarious heights or existential depths of the Coens’ finest work, it does offer similarly enjoyable mixture of the macabre and the absurd.

Atkinson’s film begins with a regular schmuck named Ray (John Magaro) being summoned to a greasy diner and handed an envelope full of photos that show his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), cheating on him. It’s devastating information to receive, and it doesn’t help that Ray is hearing it from a guy like Skip (Steve Zahn)—a self-styled private eye who dresses in a bolo tie and cowboy hat, and swears that he’s as much of a detective as any of the other boys on the force, even if he has spelled the word incorrectly on his business cards.

Tribeca Review: Laroy Allows Steve Zahn to Run Wild
John Magaro
Shane Atkinson’s debut sets itself in the ever-so-small town of Laroy. Ray (John Magaro) is a man living the simple life, married to the local beauty-pageant queen and working at his family’s hardware store alongside his brother, Junior (Matthew Del Negro). He’s not unhappy, but not quite happy either. His existence depends on raising enough money for his wife Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) to open a salon. Her happiness results in his own happiness. Unfortunately, she’s not happy––at least not with Ray.

An unabashed quasi-homage to the Coen brothers, Laroy concerns a case of mistaken identity. Ray happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and so when he’s assumed to be a hitman he obliges. As the confusion and dead bodies begin stacking up, Ray and his friend-turned-private eye Skip (Steve Zahn) must solve the plethora of crimes that lay in their wake.

‘Laroy’ Review: Steve Zahn Is a Grifting Wannabe Detective in Texas Blackmail Comedy
Image
When Ray Jepsen (John Magaro) pulls into a strip club parking to blow his brains out, his plans for the rest of the week are the furthest thing from his mind. But that’s one of the many, many downsides of suicide that nobody talks about — you create scheduling nightmares for everyone else in your life. And it’s particularly inconvenient when a local sleazebag erroneously believes that he hired you to carry out a murder that must be done tomorrow.

But that’s just life in Laroy, Texas. Shane Atkinson’s feature directorial debut takes place in a fictional town where residents only have three interests: extramarital affairs, blackmailing each other about extramarital affairs, and child beauty pageants. When an obstacle hinders someone’s ability to enjoy those treasured pastimes, murder is the most popular solution.

While suicide is never the answer, it’s easy to understand why Ray is so bummed.

‘Get Shorty’: Isaac Keys Upped To Series Regular For Season 3; Michaela Watkins & Seychelle Gabriel To Recur
Isaac Keys
Exclusive: Isaac Keys has been promoted to series regular and Michaela Watkins (Casual) and Seychelle Gabriel (Sleepy Hollow) have been tapped for recurring roles on the upcoming third season of Epix’s Get Shorty, from MGM Television. Production is underway in Vancouver for premiere this fall on Epix.

Key has recurred as Ed since the first season of the series, starring Chris O’Dowd and Ray Romano, appearing in a total of 18 episodes. Ed is Amara’s (Lidia Porto) bodyguard and a top lieutenant in her gang. He’s intimidating and built like a linebacker, but is intelligent and has a quiet confidence and dignity about him. Ed may not seem important, but he is perhaps the person Amara trusts most.

Get Shorty is based in part on Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestselling novel — which also spawned Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1995 feature — and created for television by Davey Holmes. The series follows Miles Daly (O’Dowd), muscle for a Nevada crime ring who tries to become a movie producer in Hollywood with the help of a washed-up producer, Rick Moreweather (Romano), as a means to leave his criminal past behind.

In season two, Miles (O’Dowd) struggled to reconcile his ambitions as a filmmaker and a family man with his skill set as a career criminal. His progress in Hollywood is jeopardized when his washed-up producing partner Rick (Romano) agrees to wear a federal wire and begins a romantic relationship with dangerous crime boss Amara De Escalones (Porto).

Season three finds Miles embracing more ruthless methods as he settles scores in an attempt to continue climbing the Hollywood ladder.

Cast also includes series regulars Sean Bridgers, Carolyn Dodd, Goya Robles and Megan Stevenson. Steven Weber and Sarah Stiles are recurring guest stars.

Get Shorty season three is executive produced by Holmes and Adam Arkin. The series is produced by MGM Television and internationally distributed by MGM.

Keys is repped by Apa, Infinity Entertainment, and Ginsburg Daniels.
