Canadian Drama ‘The Spencer Sisters’ Canceled After 1 Season By CTV

There will be no second season for The Spencer Sisters. CTV has opted not to pick up a second season of the Canadian drama series starring Lea Thompson and Stacey Farber.

A rep for Canada’s CTV Television Network confirmed to Deadline that “a second season of The Spencer Sisters has not been picked up at this time.”

The CW had picked up the first season of the series in 2023, which finished airing in December.

The Spencer Sisters followed a mother and daughter duo who team up to start a private detective agency. It pairs mystery novelist Victoria Spencer (Thompson) and her daughter Darby Spencer (Farber) who are mistaken as sisters as they tackle puzzling cases.

It also starred Thomas Antony Olajide, Edward Ruttle, Husein Madhavji, Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves, Rodrigo Massa, Kaitlyn Leeb and Adam Hurtig.

The final eight-episode season will premiere in Canada on the CBC Gem streaming service on Nov. 17, releasing two episodes per week until the series finale on Dec. 8.

“We set out to tell a story about a kind of transition in Sabi’s life, and how those around them also change — and we feel in this coming season that story came to an end in a way that felt right for us,” Baig and Filippo said in a statement.

“Sort Of” follows Sabi Mehboob, played by Baig, a gender expansive millennial who is exhausted with changing themselves for the comfort of others. The Spencer Sisters, which aired its first 10-part earlier this year on CTV (see trailer below), follows a mother and daughter duo who team up to start a private detective agency. It pairs mystery novelist Victoria Spencer (Thompson) and her daughter Darby Spencer (Farber) who are mistaken as sisters as they tackle puzzling cases.

Vivek Shraya Comedy Series ‘How to Fail as a Popstar’ Set at Canada’s CBC Gem (Exclusive)

Production is underway on “How to Fail as a Popstar,” Canadian streamer CBC Gem’s original series based on artist, author and musician Vivek Shraya’s debut theatrical work of the same name.

The theatrical work featured Shraya in a one-person performance, reflecting on the power of pop culture, dreams, disappointments and self-determination.

The eight-episode limited comedy series is described by the producers as being “about a queer brown boy with a huge voice doing everything he can to become a popstar – as told by the queer trans femme that boy becomes, looking back on how and why that dream was never realized.”

The series stars Shraya, Adrian Pavone (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and Chris D’Silva (“Slumberland”) as Vivek at various stages of life. Written by Shraya, the series is directed by Vanessa Matsui (“Midnight at the Paradise”) with Shraya co-directing one episode, with filming to continue in Toronto for three weeks.
