'It's a Perfect Beginning': Ridley Scott Says 1 Alien Movie Really Needs a Direct Sequel
Image
Alien fans were excited about the news of an Alien: Romulus follow-up. Franchise creator Ridley Scott stokes the fire with a tease for another sequel's plot.

Director Ridley Scott told THR that Prometheus resurrected the Alien franchise. Expressing his regret over not taking ownership of the IP after the success of Alien, Scott also said the sequels botched the canon plot. "I watched Alien 2, 3 and 4 and realized, 'Oh, you just ran that firmly into the ground,'" he asserted. "Then I went back to [former 20th Century Fox chief Tom Rothman] and said, 'Listen, there's a way out. We should resurrect Alien with Prometheus.'" That movie divided the fan base but has since gained a cult following; it also earned a sequel in Alien: Covenant.

‘Mad Max’ Director George Miller Recalls Charlize Theron-Tom Hardy ‘Fury Road’ Set Feud And Says “There’s No Excuse For It”
Image
George Miller, the director of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is revisiting the on-set drama between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in his 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road.

In a new interview, Miller recalled the feud between the stars during the film’s production, which resulted from Hardy’s tardiness.

“They were just two very different performers,” Miller told The Telegraph. “Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer. Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.”

Miller noted that things on the set gradually got better, adding, “I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.

Furiosa Director Reveals How Little Dialogue Anya Taylor-Joy Has in Mad Max Prequel
Image
Furiosa will be a woman of few words in the upcoming Mad Max prequel film. Though Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will not be short, viewers won't be hearing very much said by film's titular character played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Furiosa director George Miller addressed Taylor-Joy's dialogue as Furioa in the film. Miller shared that Taylor-Joy only has around 30 lines of dialogue in the whole film, which is reportedly close to two hours and thirty minutes long. The director referred to his inspiration from the "pure cinema" of silent comedy classics from Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, further noting, "Hitchcock defined as movies where they don't have to read the subtitles when they're screened in Japan." Miller also suggested that the issue with too much dialogue is that it slows movies down, and films are often better enjoyed at a faster pace.

‘Skinford: Death Sentence’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Joshua Brennan, Charlotte Best, Goran D. Kleut, Kelly Paterniti, Ric Herbert | Written by Nik Kacevski, Tess Meyer | Directed by Nik Kacevski

Skinford was shot and released in its native Australia and apparently nowhere else, in 2017. A sequel, Skinford: Chapter Two followed in 2018. So, when I saw the title Skinford: Death Sentence pop up on my radar I naturally enough thought it was a third film in the franchise.

Then I noticed the plot and crew credits were the same as the original film with just a couple of differences in the cast. A quick check of the copyright date confirmed this is not a new film. As near as I can guess new sales agent/distributor Black Mandala saw its potential as a cult film and picked it up; they must have some faith in it as IMDb has an entry for Skinford 2: The Curse which bears a...

Alex Proyas’ new short ‘Mask of the Evil Apparition’ evokes ‘Dark City’
Bonnie Ferguson
Bonnie Ferguson, Alex Proyas and Dean Kyrwood.

When Alex Proyas wrote the short film Mask of the Evil Apparition, he did not set out to evoke the tone of his 1998 sci-fi thriller Dark City, which was set in a nightmarish world with no sun.

But after filming for four days last week in Heretic Foundation, his new studio in Sydney’s inner west, the parallels are inescapable.

Bonnie Ferguson stars as Olivia, a young woman lost in a nocturnal, dreamlike city, with Dean Kyrwood as twin psychic brothers who try to help her find her way home as she is pursued by a shadowy cult known as The Mysterious Ones.

Alex King is Sandra, a young woman with a passion for disguise and mind games, and Goran D. Kleut portrays a roomful of identical characters.

Fearing The Aliens!
Alien: Covenant (20th Century Fox)

I really loved Prometheus, not as a cinematic masterpiece, but as movie-worthy prequel to Sir Ridley Scott's genre-defining 40 year-old masterpiece Alien. And having rewatched it again, Prometheus's smart narrative and deliberate storyline still resonate with me. Perhaps it is my age, and probably his, that that prequel raised major existential questions --  "why are we here?" and "who created us?" -- that resonate with In that film, why did the Engineers seed life in the ever-expanding universe and our own planet, if they did at all. He certainly knows how to direct action sequences that have grit, energy, and beauty as his films Gladiator and Blade Runner Scott next chapter Alien: Covenant answers many of the questions left dangling at the end of the aforementioned movie, but still leaves some questions unanswered -- a great device to hook newbies and fans alike. And certainly raises new questions,...

Hair-Raising Prometheus Sequel Shows 79-year-old Scott Still Has It While Dual Fassbender Is Show-Stealer
'Alien: Covenant' review: Michael Fassbender plays android brothers David and Walter in this effective sequel to Ridley Scott's muddled 'Prometheus.' 'Alien: Covenant' review: Recapturing 'some of the excitement, awe, and horror' of 1979 original Before we get to Alien: Covenant, a rant about its predecessor, Prometheus. The problem with Ridley Scott's 2012 return to the Alien universe is that the more we learned about the skeletal, seething, phallic, vicious xenomorphs, the looser their hold on our cinematic subconscious. Much of the effectiveness of Scott's 1979 franchise starter lies in its cruel randomness; the tragedy of a horrible death being the result of bumping into the wrong stranger on the wrong street on the wrong night. Jettisoning such primal simplicity, Prometheus suggested a farfetched connection between the aliens and mankind. The result was a muddled attempt at expanding the Alien universe so it could address no less than the origins of humanity.

Alien: Covenant Review
With Alien: Covenant – a movie about the evolution of species – Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise evolves (or devolves, depending on opinion) into a different cinematic beast. What was once a deep-space containment nightmare becomes overblown God-complex commentary. Xenomorph origins are no longer a mystery, style flaunts open-world access and tension has given way to gory, grip-your-seat action. As we hurdle closer to the truth, Scott distances himself further from Sigourney Weaver’s masterclass in isolated, fear-of-the-dark survival horror. This might be a bonus for some – adrenaline junkies who hate waiting for payoffs – but Alien: Covenant has more in common with Alien vs. Predator than anything else. Take that for what you will.

Aboard the colonization vessel Covenant hangs some 2,000 cryo-sleeping pioneers. Walter (Michael Fassbender), a Weyland automaton, is running routine maintenance when a solar flare causes extensive damage to the ship. He’s forced to wake the emergency crew earlier than expected,...

Gods of Egypt was one of three new releases that went up against two-time box office champion Deadpool this weekend, but it failed to dethrone the superhero adventure. Deadpool ended up winning for a third weekend in a row with $31.5 million. Gods of Egypt debuted in second place with $14 million, while working from a massive budget of $140 million, making it the first high-profile bomb of 2016. The movie also failed to impress critics, with just a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Earlier this morning, Gods of Egypt director Alex Proyas took to his personal Facebook page to trash the critics who dismissed his movie.

"Nothing Confirms The Rampant Stupidity Of Man-kind... Like reading reviews of my own movies. I usually try to avoid the experience - but this one takes the cake. Often, to my great amusement, a critic will mention my past films in glowing terms, when at the time those same films were savaged,...

Steven Spielberg is close to agreeing a deal to direct a new film about Moses, which is described as a biblical blend of Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan.

The Warner Bros project, which has a working title of Gods And Kings, will not be in 3D and is not a remake of Cecil B. DeMille's 1956 epic The Ten Commandments, starring Charlton Heston.

An insider told Deadline: "There have been glossy versions of the Moses story but this would be a real warrior story", adding it would be a "Braveheart-ish version."

Spielberg read the script by Stuart Hazeldine and Michael Green last September. Hazeldine is also a writer on Paradise Lost, Alex Proyas's upcoming action fantasy film based on Milton's poem, while Green was among the scribes on Green Lantern.

It's worth noting that in 2009, Twentieth Century Fox picked up another Moses project that was also envisaged as similar to Braveheart.
