Nearly a week after the Oscars, the hurt and disappointment of a missed opportunity still weighs heavily on the minds of some South Asian American dancers, who are setting out to ensure it never happens again.

Many in the South Asian dance community were dismayed by the astonishing dearth of South Asian representation in the “Naatu Naatu” performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards. While singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava were on hand to perform their hit tune from Tollywood smash “Rrr” — which made history for India that night by winning best original song — they were joined on stage by not a single dancer of South Asian heritage.

New Delhi, March 15 (Ians) Online searches for ‘Naatu Naatu’ on Google skyrocketed by a whopping 1,105 per cent worldwide after the super-hit song from the Telugu blockbuster ‘Rrr’ won the Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards, a report showed on Wednesday.

The finding by Japanese online casino guide 6Takarakuji, after sifting through Google Search trend data, revealed that online interest for ‘Naatu Naatu’ multiplied over 10 times the average volume, just hours after the Telugu-language film swept the Oscar award.

“The Indian song has become a popular sensation on TikTok, with 52.6 million views since its release in March last year,” the findings showed.

The song presents a high-tempo rhythm and a dance battle between the legendary revolutionaries and their colonial masters.

“History was made during this year’s Oscars ceremony, as aNaatu Naatu’ became the first song from an Indian film to win in the Best Song category,” said a spokesperson for 6Takarakuji.

Following “Naatu Naatu”s historic Oscar win for Best Original Song the live performance at Sunday’s performance has come under fire for its exclusion of South Asian choreographers and ensemble dancers.

Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava, who recorded the song for the “Rrr” soundtrack, sang onstage alongside two lead dancers in place of stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. The telecast recreated the scene from the film in which their characters, Ram and Bheem, face off against a large party of white Brits using the power of Telugu dance.

Critics pointed out that the performance was choreographed by “So You Think You Can Dance” duo Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo, neither of whom are of Indian descent. Nor did the ensemble prominently feature dancers of South Asian descent, a missed opportunity for wider representation, critics said.

Composer M.M. Keeravani, and singers Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava won the award, which is a first for India, in the Best Original Song, Motion Picture category. Rajamouli, Keeravani and the film’s leads Ram Charan and Ntr Jr were present at the Tuesday night ceremony at Hollywood’s Beverly Hilton Hotel.
