‘The Office’ Alums Reunite at ‘The Paper’ Premiere as Spinoff Cast Share How They Landed Their Roles: ‘It Was the Most Difficult Audition in My Entire Existence’
Image
The Harmony Gold movie theater in Hollywood bore unusual signage last Wednesday evening. In the shadow of Sunset Boulevard’s billboards promoting Peacock’s upcoming “The Office” spinoff, “The Paper,” the theater was labeled the Toledo Truth Tower — in homage to the new show’s central setting.

Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, “The Paper” follows the staff of a dying local Ohio newspaper, the Toledo Truth Teller, as a new editor-in-chief tries to revive its journalistic prowess. It’s set in the same universe as “The Office,” and the documentary crew that followed Dunder Mifflin has now arrived at the Truth Teller’s doorstep, looking to cover a new set of subjects.

Koman explained that the tie makes sense both comedically and narratively. “You could have the exact same documentary crew that made the first documentary looking for a new subject,” he told Variety on the red carpet.

‘The Paper’ Cast and Crew Admit It’s Not Really an ‘Office’ Spinoff — but What About ‘Parks & Rec’?
Image
You may have heard that Peacock’s new comedy series “The Paper” is a spinoff of “The Office.” And while Greg Daniels and much of the original crew are indeed back for more, this sitcom is actually closer to a spiritual successor to the NBC show as opposed to an outright follow-up, according to those involved.

“We’re not doing the American ‘Office,’ really. It’s entirely new. We share Oscar in common with ‘The Office,’ but apart from that, we’re a new thing. I tried not to keep the other shows in my head while doing it,” Domhnall Gleeson told TheWrap at the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday night.

Seth Rogen would be the latest actor to win an Emmy for Best Comedy Directing
Image
The Studio is the clear favorite to win Best Comedy Directing for its very meta second episode, "The Oner." The installment was directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who were also at the helm of every single episode of the first season.

Rogen earned three additional nominations for The Studio: Best Comedy Series as an executive producer, Best Comedy Actor as the star of the show, and Best Comedy Writing for co-penning the pilot episode, "The Promotion." Rogen now has a total of nine Emmy nominations throughout his career, and has yet to win. But he has a very good chance of finally breaking through in 2026.

Rogen is...

‘The Rehearsal’ May Have Actually Helped Find A Solution To Pilot’s Mental Health Issues, After All
Image
Nathan Fielder made headlines in June when he called the Federal Aviation Administration “dumb” for its pushback on claims made in the second season of HBO’s The Rehearsal.

The second season of the show focuses on airline safety, specifically related to communication between pilots and co-pilots with Fielder highlighting the issue in a series of rehearsed situations, including the comedian flying a Boeing 737 passenger jet in the finale.

In an interview on CNN’s The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown after the show ended, he criticized the F.A.A.’s training standards, claiming that they don’t really prepare pilots and co-pilots to say what’s on their mind if they are concerned about something happening in the cockpit.

In the series, Fielder was hoping to be invited to speak about the issue in front of Congress in order to raise awareness.

Since the show ended,...

The 15 Best Nathan For You Episodes Ranked
Image
Before Nathan Fielder was an advocate for aviation safety, he was best known for his Comedy Central series "Nathan For You." A graduate of one of Canada's top business schools (with really good grades), Fielder used the series to help out small businesses by providing out-of-the-box solutions to their problems, with varying levels of success. If you're the type of person who can't stop thinking about those hilarious details in "The Rehearsal," the series run of "Nathan for You" is essentially a prequel to how far the HBO series goes in solving serious problems.

But where to begin? Some of Fielder's best work in "Nathan For You" that didn't make the cut on this list include him convincing a frozen yogurt shop to sell a "poop" flavored yogurt to attract curious customers, goading a caricature artist into incorporating offensive stereotypes in his drawings, and installing a "you break it, you...

Psst! Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky would make Emmys history with a third writing win for ‘Hacks’
Image
Who's ready for a little Emmys history lesson?

If Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky were to win Best Comedy Writing this year they would enter the Emmy record books as the women with the most wins for writing a single narrative series. They're nominated for the penultimate episode of Hacks Season 4, titled "A Slippery Slope."

With four Emmy nominations, Aniello and Statsky have already tied Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Diane English (Murphy Brown) for the most bids for a woman in the Best Comedy Writing category. To date, Aniello, Statsky, Fey and Anne Flett-Giordano (Frasier) are the only women to prevail twice for a comedy; Fey has a third writing win under her belt for the variety program Saturday Night Live. For dramas, Robin Green (The Sopranos) holds the record for a single series for a female writer, with six noms and two wins.

‘South Park’s Season Premiere Title Hints That Jesus Will Take on Paramount
Image
The second twenty-seventh coming of South Park is almost upon us.

Now that we’re just one day away from the show’s (delayed) season premiere, Comedy Central has released the episode’s title as well as a brief synopsis. All the available info seems to indicate that the show will tackle the corporate merger that, according to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, has been “fucking up South Park.”

“Sermon on the ‘Mount” will, as the show’s marketing previously suggested, feature the return of Jesus Christ, who was last seen trying cocaine with Randy Marsh and Santa Claus.

“When the residents of South Park face their possible demise, Jesus returns to give them an important message,” the synopsis reads.

While that doesn’t give us many details, it does seem as though the town is facing some kind of extinction-level event. Clearly this will end up being an allegory...

Jay-Z vs. Beyoncé, Emmy Firsts for ‘American Graffiti’ Stars Ron Howard and Harrison Ford — and More Trivia From 2025’s Nominations
Image
Jay-Z and Beyoncé are the Emmys’ “’25 Bonnie and Clyde.” Let’s just hope the power couple stays Drunk in Love even after this year’s competition, where they’re competitors in the outstanding variety special (live) category.

Jay-Z, under his real name Shawn Carter, is among the executive producers nominated for Fox’s “The Apple Music Super Bowl Lix Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar,” which earned four nods total. Beyoncé is up for Netflix’s “Beyoncé Bowl” as executive producer and performer (billed as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter); that Christmas event also landed four nods.

Perhaps Jesse Collins can keep the peace. Not only is Jesse Collins Entertainment once again producing this year’s Emmy telecast, but the company was part of both the Kendrick Lamar halftime show and the Beyoncé event. On Emmy night in the production truck, Collins is likely to face 99 problems — hopefully this isn’t one.

That’s...

Inside the Episode That Earned ‘The Rehearsal’ Emmy Nominations
Image
“The Rehearsal” may not have achieved liftoff among the Emmy nominees for Best Comedy Series, but Nathan Fielder’s Season 2 exploration of cockpit communication and airplane safety — via the best-produced, often highest concept scenarios that HBO’s money can buy — did break through in the Writing, Directing, and Picture Editing categories.

Editor Adam Locke-Norton was justly recognized for managing the two-year flashback to Fielder’s pilot training and making his 737 flight in “My Controls” one of the most involving season finales of recent memory. But Fielder’s own Writing and Directing nominations, and editor Stacy Moon’s nod, were all for “Pilot’s Code,” aka, the one where Nathan Fielder lives as Sully Sullenberger, down to recreating the airline pilot’s earliest life with giant puppet parents.

That episode was a huge lift for the entire crew on “The Rehearsal,” some of whom have been empowering (enabling?) Fielder’s concepts since “Nathan For You.

HBO Just Shattered Its Emmy Nomination Record and Trounced Disney and Netflix in the Process
Image
The Emmy Awards won't be handed out until September, but HBO Max is already a big winner. By the time all the nominees were announced earlier today, the streaming service had netted 142 nominations. That's spread out over 20 series, movies, and miniseries, with The White Lotus, The Penguin, and The Last of Us leading the pack. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, September 14, in a ceremony hosted by comedian Nate Bergatze.

HBO's previous record was set in 2019, before the launch of HBO Max, with 137 nominations: that year, Game of Thrones, Barry, and Chernobyl led the way. This year, Netflix came in second, with 121 nominations; Apple TV+ rounded out the top three, taking 81. Vacation resort anthology series The White Lotus and DC Comics-derived crime drama The Penguin both earned 24 nominations apiece, with stars Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, Colin Farrell, and Cristin Milioti all taking home nominations, among others. ‘Hacks’ receives 14 Emmy nominations — but has 3 surprising snubs
Image
Emmy voters gave Hacks a standing ovation on Tuesday, rewarding the show with 14 nominations including Best Comedy Series, which it won last year. (The only comedy with more bids is The Studio with a whopping 23.) However, Season 4 of HBO Max's acclaimed series didn't get everything for which it submitted, and there were three notable snubs that caught fans off-guard: supporting actors Paul W. Downs and Megan Stalter, and guest actor Christopher McDonald.

Here are the categories Hacks got into — and missed.

Best Comedy Series: Nominated

The fourth season of Hacks focused on Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) becoming the respective host and head writer of a broadcast network talk show, fulfilling Deborah's lifelong dream. It was predictably nominated in Best Comedy Series alongside Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, The Studio, and What We Do in the Shadows.

“Severance” is the clear frontrunner for the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards. The Apple TV+ dystopian thriller from Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller scored 27 nominations, the most of any one program, on Tuesday morning.

Altogether, there were four shows that scored more than 20 nominations. HBO’s “The Penguin” was the second most-nominated series of the year with 24 nods. That was followed by Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and HBO’s “The White Lotus,” both of which secured 23 nominations.

Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the nominees for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Earlier on Tuesday, “CBS Mornings” revealed the nominees for reality competition series and talk series, which largely went as predicted.

The 77th Primetime Awards will take place live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 14, 2025. The show will air on CBS and Paramount+ and will be hosted by Nate Bargatze.

While The Paper is officially being marketed as a spin-off from the beloved mockumentary, which ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013, there are some notable changes. For starters, the show doesn...

'Severance' and 'The Pitt' Lead a Stacked Field for 2025 TCA Award Nominations
Image
As we enter the heart of summer, the Television Critics Association has unveiled its annual awards nominations for the hottest shows on television over the 2024-2025 season. Across 12 categories ranging from comedy and drama to news and variety, these accolades honor the finest artistry from actors, creators, and programs as a whole on the small screen. For the 41st iteration, there was a clear standout in the eyes of the association's 235 professional television journalists, with Apple TV+'s Severance leading the pack as the only series to earn five nominations, including for the big prize of Program of the Year. The rest of the field, however, featured many newcomers alongside returning favorites in a testament to the ever-evolving modern television landscape.

In its long-anticipated second season, Severance was powered to success by performances from Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and the fan-favorite Tramell Tillman, all of whom were nominated in the Individual Achievement in Drama category.

‘Severance’ leads Television Critics Association Awards nominations with 5
Image
Severance is very much in(nie) with the Television Critics Association. The Apple TV+ drama topped Wednesday’s 41st TCA Awards nominations with five bids.

Its nominations haul includes Program of the Year, drama series, and triple bids in Individual Achievement in Drama for Adam Scott, Britt Lower, and Tramell Tillman.

Four shows are tied with four nominations apiece: Adolescence, Hacks, The Pitt, and The Studio. All four plus Severance will compete in Program of the Year alongside Andor, The Rehearsal, and The White Lotus.

Last year, TCA dropped down to six slots per category after expanding to eight in 2021, but it has now reverted to eight. No reason was given for last year's or this year's change.

There was also unprecedented double-dipping last year by three shows — Baby Reindeer, Ripley, and Fargo — which were nominated in both drama and limited. There is no such case this year.

Fans Suspect That a Real Life Airport Is Being Run by Nathan Fielder
Image
Nathan Fielder has been pretty quiet lately. Maybe a little too quiet.

After Season Two of The Rehearsal wrapped up, we heard quite a lot from Fielder. He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, attended Q&As and even popped by CNN’s The Situation Room to excoriate the Faa for ignoring his aviation safety advice.

Play

Although Fielder may not be releasing new material any time soon, some of his fans have found one recent news story to be suspiciously Fielder-esque.

It was reported that Pittsburgh International Airport is seeking volunteers to help ensure that their new terminal is 100 percent ready to open. How? By participating in an massive “dress rehearsal.” Yup, apparently the airport is asking three to four thousand people to show up and “act as regular passengers,” frequenting shops and even collecting luggage. Some of the volunteer actors will even be given scripts to inform their behavior.

Best Comedy Directing Emmy predictions: ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Studio,’ ‘The Bear’ — oh my!
Image
With 99 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Directing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

Similar to the drama category, the comedy directing ballot has a mix of shows that took different approaches to their entries. While some played it smart (see: Hacks and The Studio) submitting one memorable episode that will be a sure-thing to make the final field, others opted for three entries, with Shrinking going up to four. In those cases, overload and potential vote-splitting make it harder to discern which episode entry will make it into the lineup of six — technically five, since one spot is reserved for a multicamera show. (More on that below.)

As mentioned, Hacks and The Studio are essentially locks for this category because of their single options. The HBO Max series has been a consistent nominee — Lucia Aniello won for the first season in 2021 — and it submitted the penultimate episode,...

Evanescence Tops Billboard Charts Thanks to Nathan Fielder and Captain Sully
Image
The second season of Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal is already making waves in the aviation safety community, as evidenced by the fact that Fielder was given a platform to roast the Faa on CNN. And the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure straight up addressed the thesis of a TV show that once featured a prolonged discussion about the fuckability of Albert Einstein.

But The Rehearsal has also, it seems, had a pretty big influence on the music world. As you may recall, in the episode “Pilot’s Code,” Fielder attempts to relive the bulk of Captain Sully Sullenberger's life, beginning in infancy. After pouring over Sully's autobiography, Fielder floats the theory that the famed pilot was only able to pull off the “Miracle on the Hudson” with the aid of his trusty iPod and the inspiring sounds of one of his very favorite bands: Evanescence.

The cathartic track,...

Best Comedy Writing Emmy predictions: Why ‘The Bear’ could miss the cut
Image
With 94 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Writing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

As expected, there are many single submissions from many of these front-runners, with no series entering more than two installments. But what may come as a surprise is the number of writers credited for scripting each episode — The Studio, for instance, has five writers for its entry. This, of course, does not matter in terms of voting, as writers are not listed on the ballot, but it’s an interesting side note to see how many scribes it takes to make people laugh.

This is a category that often defies conventional wisdom. Voters often gravitate towards shows that are less represented, such as last year when the branch nominated two canceled programs over others that were nominated for Best Comedy Series.

While there are often surprises here, this year the reigning champion,...

Jesse Plemons Plots Emma Stone’s Downfall in Bonkers First ‘Bugonia’ Trailer
Image
The next film from Academy Award-winner Yorgos Lanthimos just got an exciting new look. Focus Features has finally unveiled the first trailer for Bugonia, which will see him reunite with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. Lanthimos helped Stone win her second Oscar when the two worked together on Poor Things, which also stars Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe. He first worked with Plemons last year on Kinds of Kindness, but this will be his first film since The Favorite in 2018 to not feature Dafoe. Bugonia is due in theaters later this year on October 31, and the film follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap a high-powered CEO, convinced she is an alien here to destroy the Earth. If the trailer is any indication, Stone's character is in for a host of trouble. Alicia Silverstone, Stavros Halkias, and Aidan Delbis will also star in the film, which was written by Will Tracy.

Emmy long shots we’re rooting for: Dark horses, underdogs, and hopedictions
Image
When it comes to Emmy nominations, a little hopeful speculation (or hopediction) never hurt anyone.

As voting wrapped up on June 23, we recently unveiled Gold Derby's latest nomination predictions. Yet, which contenders are we not-so-secretly rooting for to defy expectations and snag a nomination? Below, our editors share their picks for who they'd love to see surprise us on the final Emmy ballots announced July 15.

Carrie Preston for Best Drama Actress, Elsbeth

She’s one of the most colorful (literally) characters on television. Just try to imagine anyone else playing Elsbeth Tascioni. No one else could pull off that wardrobe, those accessories, that sly, smarter-than-your-average-criminal sensibility but Carrie Preston. It’s simply a crime in and of itself that her work on Elsbeth been ignored by voters, a victim herself of the bias against CBS procedurals (a case Kathy Bates’ Matlock may well solve). If Poker Face and The Residence...

2025 Emmy Nominations Predictions for the Annual Primetime Emmy Awards
Image
With the official 2025 Emmy Nominations voting window now closed, we’re excited to take a look at some of the major categories. The new Emmy season is looming after a topsy-turvy year of television due to the strikes. Perhaps most surprising are the drops in total nominations across several categories. Due to the number of shows that submitted, we lost at least one nominee in all of the comedy and drama acting categories.

The 2025 Emmy nominations will only have five nominees in Comedy and Drama lead categories, as well as seven (instead of eight) in the supporting categories. Meanwhile, the supporting ranks for limited series will get six slots. Additionally, remember that while The Bear is competing, it is getting nominations for Season 3, not its upcoming Season 4 in a few weeks.

Is Nathan For You Real Or Scripted?
Image
"Nathan For You" is unbelievably uncomfortable, and I mean that in the best way possible. Nathan Fielder's Comedy Central series, which ran on the network from 2013 to 2017, centers around Fielder himself going to businesses in need of help and pitching increasingly absurd ideas. So, is the series scripted?

Not really, no; the very nature of "Nathan For You" depends entirely on the reaction from the very real business owners and entrepreneurs that Fielder interacts with. In a profile with GQ in 2015, Fielder explained that he and his crew essentially flew by the seat of their pants when they made the series.

"Really good ideas come from weird places," Fielder replied when interviewer Alex Wong asked about the show's creative process. "There's no formula." The actor, writer, and producer continued:

"Sometimes, we'll think of an interesting scene or concept that doesn't relate to a business and think, 'How can we...

“I just wanna watch Nathan Fielder”: Real Reason HBO Max Users Want To Boycott Bill Maher
Image
“I just wanna watch Nathan Fielder”– that’s the rallying cry of HBO Max users frustrated with Bill Maher’s growing presence on the platform. While Maher’s Real Time has long been a staple of HBO’s late-night slate, his critics are speaking louder than ever, calling out what they see as out-of-touch takes and outdated political comedy. The backlash, folks, isn’t only about content. It’s about tone, platform priorities, and the kind of voices audiences want elevated in 2025.

With creators like Nathan Fielder offering experimental, emotionally layered comedy, many viewers feel HBO Max is stuck pushing the wrong brand of relevance. And that disconnect has sparked real talk about boycotts, programming direction, and shifting audience loyalty.

‘South Park’ Fans Flock to Local Libraries in Order to See ‘Banned’ Episodes
Image
As we’ve mentioned before, the back catalogue of South Park episodes will be streaming exclusively on Paramount+ beginning in July. Unless of course, it just continues to stream on HBO Max/Max/HBO Max Again, as some reports have suggested. The plan is basically about as straightforward as the plan to cure Mr. Mackey’s childhood trauma by visiting the subconscious layer of reality that’s “like a taco inside taco within a Taco Bell that's inside a KFC that's within a mall that's inside your dream.”

But the biggest worry amongst South Park fans right now concerns which episodes will still be available to the public going forward.

HBO Max and Hulu famously removed five episodes from the show’s streaming library “because they depicted a character based on the Prophet Muhammad.” But the Paramount+ move sparked rumors that the streamer would pull a number of other episodes from circulation,...

And the Emmy Nominations Should Go to…
Image
The key races for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards couldn’t be more different.

The comedy categories appear to be heading for another showdown between The Bear — once again prompting an obligatory “Is it a drama or a comedy?” debate — and Hacks, with several returning shows still in the mix while the drama fields, which Shōgun dominated last year, are wide open.

While voters can, and in many cases should, absolutely go back to prior favorites like The White Lotus, Severance and The Last of Us, the THR television critics have recommendations on some familiar and some quirky and offbeat ways to fill out ballots.

Voting for the nomination round closes on Monday, June 23, with nominations announced on Tuesday, July 15. The 2025 Emmys will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 14, with Nate Bargatze serving as host.

Adolescence

The Netflix drama gets attention for its flashy elements: a zeitgeisty focus on the manosphere, the tour-de-force acting (including from newbie Owen Cooper) and astonishing single takes. But it’s the nuances — a temperature shift during a contentious conversation, the waves of pain crashing over hard-earned moments of joy — that make this an indelible portrait of masculinity in crisis. — Angie Han

2025 Emmys Predictions: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Image
We will update this article throughout the season, along with all our predictions, so make sure to keep checking IndieWire for the latest news from the 2025 Emmys race. The nomination round of voting takes place from June 12 to June 23, with the official Emmy nominations announced Tuesday, July 15. Afterwards, final voting commences on August 18 and ends the night of August 27. The 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday, September 14, and air live on CBS at 8:00 p.m. Et/ 5:00 p.m. Pt.

The State of the Race

There are a couple categories that are brutal this year because they lost one nomination slot, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series is one of them. Funny enough, the whole reason the category had six nomination slots last year was because there was a tie. That is not something contenders can count on, though it is...

Deep Cover (2025) ‘Tribeca’ Movie Review: A Hysterical, Crisply Written Comedy of Errors that Hits All the Right Notes
Image
Tom Kingsley’s “Deep Cover” (2025) offers Bryce Dallas Howard something that Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” couldn’t: an investigative thriller plot that actually makes sense. Kingsley’s film has such a watertight script that no moment feels dull or dragged. It knows how to use every character without resorting to convoluted twists for the sake of cheap thrills. It also understands the strengths of its central cast to make the most of their skills. Take Nick Mohammed, for example. He is one of the breakout stars of “Ted Lasso,” who portrayed Nathan Shelly as an eternally petrified but well-meaning man, whose vulnerability ends up being his strength.

Kingsley’s film casts Mohammed in a fairly similar role, who is tired of being treated like garbage and feeling like a lost cause. It also casts Howard in a role that makes use of her casual liveliness, which helps underline her character’s internal pathos.

Philosophy Expert Backs Up Nathan Fielder’s ‘The Rehearsal’ Theory
Image
While Nathan Fielder has yet to see his concerns about inter-cockpit communication satisfactorily addressed by the U.S. government, some of the theories floated by the comedian in The Rehearsal have been vindicated by at least one former National Transportation Safety Board member and, more importantly, the lead singer of early 2000s Hot Topic-friendly rockers Evanescence.

And now, a psychology journal is showing their support for Fielder — specifically for The Rehearsal, and not, say, the episode of Nathan for You where he convinced haunted-house patrons that they had contracted a terminal illness.

Writing in Psychology Today, William Irwin, a professor of philosophy at King’s College in Pennsylvania, defended Fielder’s strategy of painstakingly rehearsing real-life events via elaborate simulations. Irwin, who has penned books like Seinfeld and Philosophy and The Simpsons and Philosophy, suggested that the approach is “not as crazy as it sounds.”

And keep in mind, the thing...

A 93% Rated TV Show Starring Emma Stone Is Christopher Nolan’s Favorite That He Compared With Twin Peaks
Image
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is known for his directorial vision, which has resulted in some of the most compelling blockbusters of our time. As a result, it is no surprise that Nolan has a great taste in visual media, including a 93% rated TV series starring Emma Stone, which is one of his favorites.

During a press event, Nolan talked about his admiration for a satirical black comedy series featuring Stone alongside Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie. The series received rave reviews, with Nolan comparing it to Twin Peaks. Here is what Christopher Nolan had to say about Emma Stone’s The Curse.

Christopher Nolan praised Emma Stone’s work in The Curse

Director Christopher Nolan is known for making some of the most mind-bending movies that push the boundaries of storytelling. As a result, it isn’t a surprise that Nolan enjoys watching similarly complex and twisted shows, including the Showtime series The Curse.

Emily Mortimer Taps Alison Oliver & Yura Borisov To Lead ‘Dennis,’ Her Feature Directorial Debut For A24 & Fruit Tree
Image
Exclusive: Alison Oliver (Saltburn) and Anora Oscar nominee Yura Borisov have signed on to star in Dennis, a romance marking the feature debut of BAFTA-nominated actress Emily Mortimer, for A24 and Fruit Tree.

Written and directed by Mortimer, the film follows a British student (Oliver) and a Russian poet (Borisov) who fall in love in 1990s Moscow.

The project marks a reunion for A24 and Fruit Tree following their work on two Jesse Eisenberg projects: his forthcoming untitled comedy, starring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, on which we were first to report, and his feature directorial debut, When You Finish Saving the World. Previously, the companies have also collaborated on Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow, as well as The Curse, the Showtime series from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, starring Fielder and Fruit Tree’s Emma Stone.

Stone, Dave McCary and Ali Herting will produce Dennis through Fruit Tree alongside Mortimer,...

Why Everyone Should Be Watching The Rehearsal on HBO
Image
If you haven’t heard of The Rehearsal, created by Nathan Fielder, welcome to a whole new world in comedy.

Nathan Fielder is best known for his documentary-style comedy show, Nathan For You, and the dry and painfully honest persona he portrays in his shows.

He also recently starred in the Showtime show The Curse alongside Emma Stone.

(John P. Johnson/HBO)

Recently, Fielder has gotten plenty of buzz online for his new show The Rehearsal on HBO.

Similar to Nathan For You, The Rehearsal is a comedy docuseries that follows Fielder as he replicates real-life scenarios and helps ordinary people “rehearse” for events.

While the scenarios start small, such as coming clean about a lie about trivia, they gradually escalate to higher stakes, such as raising a child.

Hot Take: Tom Bergeron’s Firing Was the Best Thing to Happen to Dancing With the Stars
Image
Tom Bergeron’s firing from Dancing With the Stars nearly five years ago was a huge shock.

It seemingly came out of nowhere, and viewers were upset about the change.

Tyra Banks was his replacement, and it didn’t go well.

(ABC/Screenshot)

However, after the chaos and pushback from Dancing With the Stars viewers, ABC settled on the current co-hosting situation.

Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough are the duo we didn’t know we needed from the dance competition.

Tom Bergeron’s Firing Was a Blessing in Disguise

While we loved Tom Bergeron and he was a staple on the show for 15 years, his firing sparked a revival in the failing reality dance competition.

(ABC/Screenshot)

After Tyra Banks didn’t last (even with Alfonso Ribeiro as her co-host), the current co-hosting pair took the stage.

Julianne Hough joined Alfonso during Season 32 of Dancing With the Stars, and it’s been great ever since.

15 Gilligan's Island Facts Only Hardcore Fans Know
Image
Even if you never watched "Gilligan's Island" yourself, it's such a pillar in pop culture that you undeniably know the gist of what it's about. A charter boat with two crew members and five passengers ends up getting shipwrecked on a deserted island, except for the occasional guest star who would show up for an episode and then never appear again. These seven individuals frequently get underneath one another's skin, as they figure out how to get off the island, and anytime it seems like they're close, Gilligan (Bob Denver) usually winds up ruining everything.

It's a simple premise, but one that worked incredibly well for 98 episodes across three seasons from 1964 to 1967. To this day, Gilligan's iconic red shirt and white bucket hat remain entrenched in people's minds. But a lot happened during those three seasons that even the most hardcore of fans may not be aware of. After 60 years,...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Emmy odds for Selena Gomez, the Martins, and all those guest stars
Image
To date, Emmy voters have showered Only Murders in the Building with 49 nominations and seven wins, though none of the main actors has prevailed. That could all change for the buzzed-about fourth season, which aired last summer and is now eligible at the 2025 Emmys.

According to our updated odds, Martin Short (Oliver Putnam) is out front to win his Best Comedy Actor category, just months after he shockingly scored at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. His costars, Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Selena Gomez (Mabel Mora), are both in sixth place for nominations. The three leads play unlikely crime-solvers who podcast about murders that occur in and around their building, the fancy-schmancy Arconia in New York City.

Season 4 features a sprawling roster of special guests, including two actors — Meryl Streep (Loretta Durkin) and Paul Rudd (Glen Stubbins) — who received supporting nominations last year. Due to an already-controversial new Emmy rule,...

A Boarding Pass From Nathan Fielder’s ‘Miracle Over the Mojave’ Raises More Questions for ‘The Rehearsal’ Fans
Image
Even though it’s been well over a week since Season Two of The Rehearsal wrapped up, a number of fans are still obsessing over the finale, possibly with the aid of a cork board and string.

As anyone who watched all of The Rehearsal (or caught Nathan Fielder on Wolf Blitzer’s CNN show) is already aware, “My Controls” ended with Fielder obtaining his pilot’s license and seemingly taking a 737 full of actors for a brief plane ride. The comedian later dubbed this momentous flight the “Miracle Over the Mojave,” purely to stick it to Captain Sully.

But after the episode aired, suspicious fans decided to dig a little deeper, and uncovered data indicating that there were multiple flights, not just one as the show suggested. As a result, some folks theorized that Fielder only ever piloted empty 737s for the cameras, and ceded the captain’s chair...

‘The Daily Show’ Unveils ‘Racial Support Pilots,’ Mocking Dei Criticism | Video
Image
Nathan Fielder isn’t the only comedian who’s allowed to joke about airline pilots. “The Daily Show” made fun of Dei hand-wringing around the industry on Tuesday with the introduction of its latest service: White Flight.

The fake commercial starts with a man rolling his eyes and muttering “Dei” at two pilots who happen to be a Black man and a woman.

“Are your passengers uncomfortable with the look of your pilots?” a cheery woman says in the Comedy Central voiceover. “Then you need White Flight, a revolutionary new service offering racial support pilots. Sign up and your diverse pilots will be given one of our White Flight stand-ins. Passengers will be reassured by a handsome Caucasian pilot with a penis.”

Jordan Klepper stars as the poster pilot for White Flight, a white man who happily greets passengers as they board the plane — but who’s only qualified to...

Nathan Fielder Lands Real 737 in High-Stakes “Rehearsal” Finale
Nathan Fielder
HBO aired Nathan Fielder’s second-season finale of “The Rehearsal” on 25 May, capping a six-episode run that followed the comedian’s obsessive study of airline cockpit culture.

In the closing hour, Fielder pilots a Boeing 737 from San Bernardino to the Nevada border and lands without incident before cheering passengers, an act many viewers quickly dubbed “the Miracle over the Mojave.”

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter days later, the creator quipped that unlike Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger he “put the plane down safely on land,” reigniting social-media debate over heroism and spectacle.

A follow-up interview with Vulture revealed that Fielder underwent 18 months of simulator training and logged commercial ferry flights to satisfy federal licensing rules before cameras rolled.

Critics traced the episode’s roots to Fielder’s season-long investigation into why first officers hesitate to challenge captains, with some analysts likening his elaborate test to a live ethnography rather than scripted television.

Nathan Fielder reveals ‘The Rehearsal’ finale twist almost didn’t happen
Image
The mind-blowing finale of The Rehearsal's second season — in which (spoilers!) it's revealed that Nathan Fielder is a licensed pilot, trained on a 737 — wasn't always planned as a big surprise.

At a For Your Consideration Q&a moderated by Jack Black, Fielder explained that the plan for the air travel-focused season always involved him becoming a pilot. In fact, a lot of conversations that Fielder had with actual commercial airline pilots for the show were predicated on his experience in the cockpit.

"So I was like, 'Well, I want to become a pilot, both to learn what it's like and so I can understand it,'" Fielder said. "But also, it'll help me when I'm talking to these pilots, to be like, 'Hey, I'm a pilot too' in the middle of the conversation."
