Cartoon Network's Transformers Animated Gets Nearly 20-Year-Old Original Art Reveal
Image
Released nearly two decades ago on Cartoon Network, Transformers Animated went from an initially contentious series to a fan-favorite. Now, concept art for the beloved show has been released that gives a much different look at the series.

Shown on social media by a former employee of Cartoon Network, the Transformers Animated development concepts both resemble and wildly differ from the finished product. Reimagining Optimus Prime and the Autobots, these designs also had the first look at characters eventually introduced later in the series. With new versions of this iteration of the franchise now released in the current toy line, the recently-revealed designs cement Transformers Animated as a veritable classic in the annals of the brand.

The True Story Behind Black Bird
Image
"Black Bird" is one of the most intense and finely crafted true crime stories of the year. The series made by "Mystic River" writer Dennis Lehane has a lot going for it, from subtle scripts that ratchet up the intensity of the serial killer-centric story without ever feeling exploitative, to explosively great performances from Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser. Egerton's cocky criminal Jimmy Keene is countered at every step by the man he's supposed to be talking into a confession in prison, alleged serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser). The pair's dynamic is anything but simple, and the series lets it unfold steadily across its six compelling episodes.

The Apple TV+ series also features the last performance from Ray Liotta, who, as Jimmy's sick father, motivates him to take a deal as a federal informant purposely placed in prison alongside Hall. The whole series sounds like a case of truth being stranger than fiction,...

Cartoon Network Going Corporate? Animators and Fans Are Worried
Image
Following Tuesday’s news of layoffs and restructurings within Warner Bros. Television Group, many animation fans and creators have taken to social media to express worry about the state of Cartoon Network Studios within the company — which sources from Warner Bros. maintain is unfounded.

The layoffs, announced on Tuesday, heavily affected the animation division of the company. As laid out in a memo sent by Television Group chief Channing Dungey, the three studios the animation division consists of — Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe — will remain intact. While Hanna-Barbera will operate independently due to geographical distance, Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation will merge their development and production teams. Announced on Thursday, Cartoon Network execs Tricia Melton and Jill King are the latest to go as part of the merger.

Audrey Diehl will oversee the combined kids and family series, Peter Girardi will lead the combined adult animation development,...

Paul Walter Hauser and Taron Egerton in Black Bird (2022)
‘Black Bird’ Review: Apple TV+ Crime Drama Evokes the Best of the Genre
Paul Walter Hauser and Taron Egerton in Black Bird (2022)
It would appear easy enough to lose “Black Bird” in the shuffle of true-crime prestige TV series. It’s got the usual mix of name talent both young-ish (“Rocketman” and “Kingsman” star Taran Egerton; “Richard Jewell” star Paul Walter Hauser) and established (Greg Kinnear; the late Ray Liotta); it’s got real-life mystery that’s compelling but not wildly unpredictable; it’s even got a forgettable title that doesn’t reveal its connection to the story at hand until late in the series. So it’s a wonderful surprise to realize so quickly that this six-episode Apple TV+ series is more than the sum of its familiar parts: It’s an unexpectedly exacting and quietly gripping series of interlocking character studies.

The premise evokes both “The Departed” and “Zodiac.” In one storyline, cocky and charming drug dealer Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton) is nabbed and unexpectedly sentenced to a decade in prison,...

Apple TV+’s ‘Black Bird’: TV Review

Click here to read the full article.

Disclaimer: No matter what you may have gathered from film and television, given the opportunity to sit down in a sterile room opposite a manacled serial killer, chances are very poor that you would be able to get him to share intimate details about his crimes and subtextual lessons about life.

Just because you see things done in scripted form doesn’t mean you can execute them in real life, and just because something was done in real life doesn’t mean it’s going to be transferred believably into scripted form. Oh, and just because something real isn’t transferred believably into scripted form doesn’t necessarily mean the result will be bad.

Dennis Lehane’s new six-part drama, Black Bird, is based on James Keene’s memoir In With the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption.

Black Bird: The Limited Series is a Masterclass of the True Crime Genre
Dennis Lehane at an event for Quand vient la nuit (2014)
True Crime has become one of the hottest tickets on TV.

Whether a movie, docuseries, or scripted show, the lure of our darker side persists.

Dennis Lehane is a master of our darker side. As an author and filmmaker, his work looks into what drives people to darkness and how they come back from it.

Lehane's work on the page and screen meld beautifully with Black Bird, an adaptation of In With The Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and A Dangerous Bargain for Redemption by James Keene.

Jimmy Keene is a successful drug dealer living a lavish lifestyle. He came from humble beginnings, but Jimmy is anything but humble himself. His friends still watch his high school football tapes, and Jimmy relishes the lavish praise and attention he receives.

Larry Hall's beginning was a little less stellar. He, too, came from humble beginnings, and whether it was...

‘Black Bird’ Review: Apple’s Chilling Prison Drama Explores Pervasive Truths About Misogyny
Image
Like so much of Dennis Lehane’s writing, “Black Bird” is a stealthy piece of storytelling — at first appearing like a simple crow, nested comfortably on the power line next to a dozen others like it, before spreading its wings and revealing a plumage streaked with shades of gray. For decades now, the novelist and screenwriter has married shrewd sociological observations with popular genre fare. His Kenzie/Gennaro series, peaking with “Gone Baby Gone” and its impossible question of how to best care for at-risk children, is stacked with similar quandaries rooted in morality, responsibility, and the public good. This perspective felt right at home on “The Wire,” which Lehane joined in Seasons 3 and 4, before “Boardwalk Empire,” “Mr. Mercedes,” and “The Outsider,” among other uncredited TV jobs, film scripts, and a steady output of new books.

“Black Bird,” his first series as showrunner and developer, alludes to its complementary components from the very start.

“I never wanted this for you…” New trailer drops for ‘Black Bird’
Paul Walter Hauser and Taron Egerton in Black Bird (2022)
Apple has unveiled the trailer for the highly-anticipated limited drama series ‘Black Bird,’ a gritty, suspenseful psychological thriller developed and executive produced by acclaimed, bestselling author Dennis Lehane.

Inspired by actual events, when high school football hero and decorated policeman’s son Jimmy Keene (Egerton) is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison, he is given the choice of a lifetime — enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Hauser), or stay where he is and serve his full sentence with no possibility of parole. Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall’s appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar? This dramatic and captivating story subverts the crime genre by...

Michael Chiklis & Bruce Willis in Crime Film '10 Minutes Gone' Trailer
"Every minute gets him closer to the truth." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a crime thriller film titled 10 Minutes Gone, the latest by mediocre action filmmaker Brian A. Miller (he also made Backtrace with Stallone last year). 10 Minutes Gone is a crime thriller that centers on a man whose memory has been lost due to a bank heist gone wrong. Frank must piece together the missing 10 minutes from his memory in order to determine who sabotaged him, confronting his team members one-by-one before the boss takes him out. Michael Chiklis stars as Frank, with Bruce Willis, Meadow Williams, Kyle Schmid, Texas Battle, Lydia Hull, Swen Temmel, John D. Hickman, Sergio Rizzuto, Geoff Reeves, and Tyler Jon Olson. This looks as bland and forgettable as everything Brian A. Miller makes, despite the two leading actors. And the awkward "trailer voice" in this is cringe-worthy. "So much for honor among thieves,...

‘Backtrace’ DVD Review
Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Matthew Modine, Christopher McDonald, Ryan Guzman, Meadow Williams, Colin Egglesfield, Baylee Curran, Jenna Willis, Heather Johansen, Swen Temmel | Written by Mike Maples | Directed by Brian A. Miller

Directed by Brian A. Miller and written by Mike Maples, Backtrace stars one of the most famous actors of all time, Sylvester Stallone and Matthew Modine. Modine plays Macdonald, a bank robber who can’t recall when he hid millions of dollars, and a bunch of people want to know the answer to the riddle. Stallone plays Sykes, a cop who, along with Franks, an FBI agent played by Christopher McDonald, are out for information about what’s going on. The premise is simple, it doesn’t really attempt to be more than it is, and this is, without frills or excuses, an action crime movie. Hell, within the first five minutes there’s been more bullets fired than a Walking Dead finale.

Matthew Modine at an event for Stranger Things (2016)
Film Review: ‘Backtrace’
Matthew Modine at an event for Stranger Things (2016)
“You can’t kill me! I died seven years ago!” It’s very much to the credit of Matthew Modine that he persuasively sells this melodramatic scrap of dialogue, and every other aspect of his trickily written lead character, in “Backtrace,” a better-than-average VOD-centric thriller that likely wouldn’t work nearly so well without the veteran actor’s totally committed performance. Sylvester Stallone and Christopher McDonald are along for the ride, but in roles that keep them largely consigned to the sidelines until the inevitable climatic shootout. Throughout most of the movie’s running time, Modine is tasked with the majority of the heavy lifting, and he handles the burden admirably.

Of course, he does get a little help from co-stars Ryan Guzman, Meadow Williams and Tyler Jon Olson, cast as conspirators who smuggle Modine’s character, MacDonald, out of a prison psychiatric ward. Seven years earlier, MacDonald and two...

Sylvester Stallone & Ryan Guzman in Trailer for Action Film 'Backtrace'
"Stay sharp. These guys will kill for what they're after." Lionsgate Premiere has debuted an official trailer for an action crime thriller titled Backtrace, starring Sylvester Stallone as a detective. This cops & robbers flick is about an amnesiac criminal, played by Matthew Modine, who is the lone surviving thief of a violent armored car robbery. He's given a drug that forces him to relive the life he's forgotten, in order to find the money he hid. The film's full cast includes Ryan Guzman, Meadow Williams, Christopher McDonald, Colin Egglesfield, Lydia Hull, Tyler Jon Olson, Sergio Rizzuto, and Swen Temmel. We've seen so many of these throwaway action movies, and they pretty much all look the same every time. So much screaming and intensity and gunfire in this glimpse. Stallone Chases Modine in Backtrace [Trailer]
Director Brian A. Miller is to Bruce Willis what Peter Berg is to Mark Wahlberg, the difference is that unlike the Wahlberg/Berg pairing which pumps out movies that get theatrical releases and which people actually see (regardless of quality), the Miller/Willis pairing has resulted in a couple of mediocre cop dramas that few have seen.

The latest of Miller's cop movies is called Backtrace and though it doesn't star Willis, it does have another ageing action star at the helm: Sylvester Stallone.

Stallone stars as Sykes, a detective on the hunt for a bank robber suffering from amnesia, played by Matthew Modine, who has been sprung out of a maximum security facility by another group of bad guys who give Modine an experimental drug in an effort to bring back his memory of whe...

Film Review: ‘Reprisal’
Eric Roberts at an event for In the Air (2009)
In a previous iteration of the movie business, a derivative B movie such as “Reprisal” would have provided gainful employment for actors such as Eric Roberts, Ice-t, and Gary Busey — who, truth to tell, likely would have delivered more than a fair share of down-and-dirty cheap thrills — and premiered on the New Releases shelf at Blockbuster Video stores everywhere. That was then, this is now: Fodder of this kind can land at least a smattering of theatrical engagements on the same day it’s made available on demand. And yet, it probably, and deservedly, will have an even shorter shelf life than direct-to-video product of yesteryear, despite the marquee value of Bruce Willis and Frank Grillo in lead roles.

Indeed, with all due respect to Willis, whose admirable professionalism permits him to bring a second dimension to the flat role he’s given here, the few curiosity-seekers who bother to...

The story follows a man "who loses ten minutes of his memory due to being hit by a stray bullet during a bank heist gone wrong. He must put the pieces of his broken memory together in order to find out who sabotaged the job and took the money, all while being pursued by a powerful crime boss hellbent on recovering the cash."

Willis will take on the role of the pissed off crime boss. In a statement, Willis said that he's “excited to be working with producers Randall Emmett and George Furla again with their new venture MoviePass Films.”

The film will be directed by Brian A. Miller...

MoviePass Films’ First Project Will Be ’10 Minutes Gone’ Starring Bruce Willis
In the latest update from the ongoing MoviePass Saga—subtitled: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?—MoviePass Films has announced its first project: 10 Minutes Gone, a crime-thriller starring none other than Bruce Willis. Brian A. Miller (Vice) will direct a screenplay written by Kelvin Mao and Jeff Jingle. Deadline reports that Willis is playing a "pissed off crime boss," which somehow is only like the fourth or fifth most amusing thing about this entire situation. The first, of course, simply being the absolute state of MoviePass itself. You may have heard the movie ticket subscription arm of the company …...

New Trailer for Crime Thriller 'Reprisal' with Frank Grillo & Bruce Willis
"You want to talk with somebody, you talk with me!" Lionsgate Premiere has released an official trailer for a B-movie action crime thriller titled Reprisal. Don't get too excited, even with these two action stars, this movie looks like shit. Surprise, surprise. There's so many of these direct-to-the-bargain-big action being made movies recently, that it's getting kind of annoying. Why!? Why keep making them? What's the point? Who even watches these? Frank Grillo stars as a bank manager haunted by a violent incident in his past, who teams up with his ex-cop neighbor to go after the people behind it. Of course, they then mess with his family and he gets really upset. What an original idea... Ugh. Bruce Willis co-stars along with Johnathon Schaech, Olivia Culpo, Colin Egglesfield, Wass Stevens, and Natali Yura. This movie looks so bad. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brian A. Miller's Reprisal,...

The cast and crew of Lionsgate's sci-fi thriller Vice tell their favorite Bruce Willis stories from the set in our exclusive preview for the Blu-ray and DVD release on March 17. Bruce Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers in Vice (2015)
'Vice' Clip Starring Bruce Willis | Exclusive
Bruce Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers in Vice (2015)
Following the first trailer that debuted last week, we have an exclusive clip from the upcoming sci-fi thriller Vice that gives us a proper introduction to this futuristic resort, through a message from Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis). Much like Westworld and Total Recall before it, Vice centers on a place where fantasies are fulfilled without consequence or punishment of any kind. This scene gives us a few brief glimpses at what some of those scenarios could be while visiting Vice.

Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis) has designed the ultimate resort: Vice, where anything goes and the customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look, think and feel like humans. When an artificial (Ambyr Childers) becomes self-aware and escapes, she finds herself caught in the crossfire between Julian's mercenaries and a cop (Thomas Jane) who is hell-bent on shutting down Vice, and stopping the violence once and for all.

'Vice' Trailer Starring Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane
Bruce Willis, Thomas Jane, and Ambyr Childers in Vice (2015)
Artificial intelligence comes to life in sinful ways in the first trailer for Vice, starring Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane. The project reunites director Brian A Miller with Bruce Willis, who collaborated together on the recent-action-thriller The Prince. As you'll see below, Vice is just the latest in what appears to be a string of film and TV projects involving A.I. androids, including the upcoming Westworld remake and Neill Blomkamp's Chappie.

Julian Michaels (Bruce Willis) has designed the ultimate resort: Vice, where anything goes and the customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look, think, and feel like humans. These androids have their memories wiped after each encounter, where anything goes, including rape or murder. Bruce Willis' latest sci-fi film, Vice, due next month
Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane star in Vice, which lands in the Us next month. Poster and details right here...

Even though it feels like it's been a while since Bruce Willis put his back into a film, his track record when it comes to science fiction is really rather good. In fact, it's perhaps no coincidence that his last really impressive feature was Rian Johnson's Looper.

Anyway, he's giving science fiction another go, as he filmed the upcoming movie Vice. This one is directed by Brian A Miller (who previously directed Willis in The Prince. Nope, us neither). Miler is in post-production on the film right now, and it co-stars Thomas Jane and Ambyr Childers.

The plot? Willis plays a man called Julian who has designed Vice, described in the synopsis as the "ultimate resort", one where "anything goes and the customers can play out their wildest fantasies with artificial inhabitants who look,...

Check Out These Five Exclusive New Images From The Prince
In the action genre, there are few stars whose mere presence packs as powerful a punch as Bruce Willis. And while of course none of us here at We Got This Covered could ever claim to have grown tired of seeing the icon kick ass, this summer’s The Prince is definitely more interesting than most action fare the actor has been involved with lately – because it casts him not as the put-upon hero, but as a cold-hearted, dastardly assassin.

Today, We Got This Covered is thrilled to exclusively five new images from the actioner, highlighting Willis along with stars Jason Patric and John Cusack. You can check them out below.

In The Prince, Patric plays a retired assassin who gets drawn back into his old life when his teenage daughter (Gia Mantegna) is kidnapped. After recruiting an old ally (Cusack) and heading into enemy territory, he realizes that confronting...
