Chicken Soup For The Soul-Owned Halcyon Studios Sets James Ellroy Project, Ernest Hemingway Adaptation & Gary Sherman ‘Death Line’ Remake
Image
Exclusive: An untitled James Ellroy project and reimaginings of Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and Gary Sherman’s Death Line comprise part of Chicken Soup for the Soul-owned Halcyon Studios’ latest development slate.

The indie, which is headed up by David Ellender, was formed last year when Chicken Soup acquired the assets and IP of Sonar Entertainment.

Today’s development slate revealed an untitled limited series set in Beverly Hills from LA Confidential and Black Dahlia writer Ellroy, about a jewel-heist-turned-robbery that engulfs the local police department.

There is also the Hemingway adaptation forged with Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain’s Fabula and a remake of Death Line by prolific horror director Sherman 50 years after the original launched. Halycon hopes to establish a “missing persons” franchise for the latter, which is co-created with Jeremy Dyson.

Elsewhere, Under the Wave at Waimea comes from John from Cincinnati...

‘Tapping The Source’: Martin Helgeland Adapting Kem Nunn Novel For Universal
David Milch
Exclusive: We hear that Universal Pictures is developing Tapping the Source, based on the novel by surf noir writer Kem Nunn.

The series starred Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca De Mornay, Ed O’Neill, Luiz Guzman, Luke Perry, Jennifer Grey and Garrett Dillahunt.

Nunn’s Tapping the Source follows Ike Taylor, a young outsider who ventures into a dangerous California surfing community to solve the mystery of his missing sister. The novel was the National Book Award finalist.

Hugh Laurie’s ‘Chance’ Canceled at Hulu
Gretchen Mol and Hugh Laurie in Chance (2016)
Hugh Laurie’s Hulu drama “Chance” has been canceled after two seasons, a representative told TheWrap Tuesday. The psychological thriller, produced by Fox 21 Television Studios, was picked up for two seasons by the streaming service in 2016. The show is based on Kem Nunn’s novel of the same name. The drama had Laurie again starring as a doctor, his first series regular role since “House.” Laurie has had roles in other shows in between, such as President Selena Meyers (Julia Louis-Dreyfus)’ love interest on “Veep” and as Richard Roper on the mini-series “The Night Manager,” for which he won Best Performance by an Actor...

‘Chance’ Canceled By Hulu After 2 Seasons
Hulu has opted not to order a third season of the Hugh Laurie drama Chance. Chance was a hot package that, in a very competitive situation, landed at Hulu with two-season 20-episode order, so this was the first time it came up for renewal. The project, from author Kem Nunn, Room director Lenny Abrahamson, showrunner Alexandra Cunningham and producer Michael London, did not break out and became a victims of Peak TV, getting somewhat lost in the sea of originals on…...

Chance Cancelled at Hulu
Its renewal chances were slim-to-none so this hardly comes as a surprise: Hulu has cancelled the Hugh Laurie drama Chance after two under-the-radar seasons, TVLine has learned.

RELATEDCable/Streaming Scorecard: What’s Renewed? What’s Cancelled?

The noir-ish thriller bowed in late 2016 to decent reviews, but the series generated little buzz during its initial 10-episode run. Regardless, Hulu moved forward with a second season, primarily because, well, it picked the show up for two seasons right out of the gate (i.e. the streamer was legally obligated to honor its initial commitment).

The second season ended on Nov. 29.

The San Francisco-set Chance,...

‘Chance’ Season 2 Trailer: Hugh Laurie has a Death Wish in Hulu’s Gleefully Demented New Season — Exclusive
Gretchen Mol and Hugh Laurie in Chance (2016)
The first season of “Chance,” Hulu’s finely crafted mystery-thriller starring Hugh Laurie, focused on one doctor’s quest to understand his own dangerous desires. He lived on the edge by studying not only his patients, but his own reactions to their plight.

Well, he’s reached a diagnosis. Eldon Chance’s (Laurie) hesitancy to dive headfirst into the dark, deep water of a criminal underworld, well, that’s gone. He’s jumping in with both feet, and he really likes getting wet.

“Chance” is based on the book by Kem Nunn and was developed for Hulu by Nunn and Alexandra Cunningham. “Room” director Lenny Abrahamson directed the pilot and serves as an executive producer in Season 2.

The second season consists of 10 hour-long episodes, promises more action, and features a fresh new adversary in Paul Schneider.

Hugh Laurie Gets A Second ‘Chance’ In Season 2 Trailer For Hulu Show
Nobody talks about anything on Hulu except “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and that’s a shame because if “The Path” gets canceled without resolving some shit I’ll be pissed. Luckily, the drama series “Chance,” despite the first season’s middling reviews, is returning this fall. The series, based on a novel of the same name and written by Kem Nunn, actually received a two-season order from the get-go, with ten episodes in each season.

Chance Season 1 Review
Five episodes were provided prior to broadcast.

It’s easy to see why people will compare Hulu’s newest original series, Chance, with Fox’s long-running drama House.

Yes, they both find Hugh Laurie playing troubled doctors dealing with their fair share of personal and professional ailments, battled on a seemingly hourly basis, but neither share the same DNA. House was broadcast melodrama with nearly 200 episodes under its belt centered around the Head of Diagnostic Medicine in a fictionalized high-end New Jersey hospital. Chance, meanwhile, is a decidedly more intimate, accessible noir-tinged character drama following the social and, perhaps, mental decline of a broke, divorced and emotionally/physically exhausted neuropsychiatrist. Neither were particularly lighthearted, but Chance is a bleaker, more adult-orientated exploration into crime, corruption and psychological unrest. Those expecting another quippy, enjoyably pessimistic PhD Laurie doctor will need to look elsewhere. That’s likely for the best.

With that in mind,...

‘Chance’ Review: Even With Hugh Laurie, Hulu Series Not Worth Taking A Chance On
Yes, Hugh Laurie plays a doctor on Hulu’s Chance, but the October 19-debuting series is no House – and I don't mean that in a good way. The series based on Kem Nunn's 2014 novel is, as I say in my video review above, an ill-considered step backwards for the home of Casual and The Path. Few actors can do empathy or haunted as well as Laurie, and he is asked to do that a lot in this Fox 21 Studios-produced series as the broke, divorced and obsessed neuropsychiatrist Dr…...

What Is It? Ava DuVernay has teamed with Oprah for this series about a family reunited by tragedy in Louisiana, and she’s brought with her an entirely female director roster (a first).

I’ll Like It If I Like… Stories set in the South, stories that feature strong female characters and stories that aren’t afraid of taking on big issues head-on.

Why Should I Care? “Queen Sugar” has its flaws, but there’s some rich filmmaking on display and there’s potential for growth with these characters.

Louis C.K. in Louie (2010)
20 new fall TV shows to get excited about
Louis C.K. in Louie (2010)
Once upon a time, conventional wisdom in TV suggested that any shows debuting outside of the fall were in some way lesser than the ones launching in September and October. Thanks to cable, streaming, and even a transformation of the way the broadcast networks schedule things, the roles have almost entirely reversed: now the really special stuff gets saved for January or later, while a lot of what's scheduled for a more traditional launch can be viewed as cannon fodder. This TV season, for instance, Fox is saving its revivals of 24 and Prison Break for 2017, and the CW is doing the same with its highest-profile new series, Riverdale. But there's still a lot of promising stuff coming this fall across broadcast, cable, and streaming — not just the welcome return of shows like Rectify, You're the Worst, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but a far more exciting batch of new series than were...

Eight years is an awful long time to be solving medical riddles like a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, and it looked to be that British actor Hugh Laurie was ready to hang up the stethoscope when House bowed out in 2012. How and ever, Deadline is reporting that the award-winning star has been courted back for another medical drama called Chance, which has already earned a full two-season backing by Hulu.

Stepping in to play the titular doctor once again, Laurie is set to headline the new show as Eldon Chance, a man living it out in San Francisco as a forensic neuropsychiatrist. But it’s at this point that Chance diverges off the beaten track when, after a fiery encounter with a patient’s abusive husband, Laurie’s character is forced to venture into the dark criminal underbelly of the city he calls home, encountering police corruption and mental illness. Further along the downward spiral,...

Paging Dr. 'Chance': Hugh Laurie Takes the Lead of New Hulu Series
They had us at Hugh Laurie Does Anything, but we may need mouth-to-mouth after learning the "House" alum will lead "Chance," Hulu's new psychological thriller series.

According to Deadline, Laurie will play San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist Dr. Eldon Chance, who gets drawn into a world of mistaken identity, police corruption, and mental illness. "Chance" is based on the novel by Kem Nunn, with Alexandra Cunningham ("Desperate Housewives," "Aquarius") as showrunner, and "Room" director Lenny Abrahamson as an executive producer and director of several episodes. "Chance" already has a two-season 20 episode order for a late 2016 premiere, which is a strong early show of support.

So if you were on the fence about subscribing to Hulu, consider the return of Dr. Laurie to a lead series role. (Question: Is there Any way we can drag Robert Sean Leonard into this thing, so it's a full House & Wilson reunion?)

Deadline said Hugh Laurie had been the No.

Hugh Laurie in Dr House (2004)
Hugh Laurie Will Be Playing a Doctor Again in Hulu's Newest Drama
Hugh Laurie in Dr House (2004)
The coughing, the sores, the antihero — surely, Dr. House, the signs point to lupus! But no, it's not lupus. It's Hulu. Yes, Hulu has made a 20-episode, two-season order for Chance, a drama starring Hugh Laurie as doctor — though this time as a forensic neuropsychiatrist named Eldon Chance. But while House mostly kept to the hospital, Chance, which is based on a novel from Kem Nunn, will take Laurie's doctor into San Francisco's criminal underworld, after "an ill-advised decision involving a patient possibly suffering from multiple personality disorder." Room's Lenny Abrahamson is set to direct a few episodes of the series, so here's to hoping the criminal underworld is a little more palatable than Brie Larson's room. Chance is set to premiere later this year, after the release of Hulu's first two dramas, The Path and 11.22.63.

Sons of Anarchy, Ep. 6.12: “You Are My Sunshine” – Where no one can catch a break, ever
Sons of Anarchy, Season 6: Episode 12 – “You Are My Sunshine”

Written by Kem Nunn, Mike Daniels and Kurt Sutter

Directed by Paris Barclay

Airs Tuesdays at 10 on FX

One of the more interesting discussions that’s been going on between TV critics this year – now that Breaking Bad has finished and Mad Men is slowly on its way out – has revolved around darkness of tone and how unrelenting it can be in a series to the point where it’s a problem. We’ve seen plenty of new, dark shows carve a niche for themselves without being too oppressive with their content (I think first and foremost about Hannibal, which would be inexcusably violent if not for the fact that – unlike most violent shows – it takes so much time to examine the horrific effects violence has on its characters). Sons of Anarchy, though, is one of those shows in which...
