Exclusive: An untitled James Ellroy project and reimaginings of Ernest Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea and Gary Sherman’s Death Line comprise part of Chicken Soup for the Soul-owned Halcyon Studios’ latest development slate.

The indie, which is headed up by David Ellender, was formed last year when Chicken Soup acquired the assets and IP of Sonar Entertainment.

Today’s development slate revealed an untitled limited series set in Beverly Hills from LA Confidential and Black Dahlia writer Ellroy, about a jewel-heist-turned-robbery that engulfs the local police department.

There is also the Hemingway adaptation forged with Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain’s Fabula and a remake of Death Line by prolific horror director Sherman 50 years after the original launched. Halycon hopes to establish a “missing persons” franchise for the latter, which is co-created with Jeremy Dyson.

Exclusive: We hear that Universal Pictures is developing Tapping the Source, based on the novel by surf noir writer Kem Nunn.

Nunn you’ll remember is the co-creator of David Milch’s HBO series John From Cincinnati which ran for one season and followed the dysfunctional surfing family the Yosts In Imperial Beach, California who encounter two new arrivals to the community: a dim-but-wealthy surfing enthusiast and a man spurned by the Yosts years ago. The series starred Bruce Greenwood, Rebecca De Mornay, Ed O’Neill, Luiz Guzman, Luke Perry, Jennifer Grey and Garrett Dillahunt.

Nunn’s Tapping the Source follows Ike Taylor, a young outsider who ventures into a dangerous California surfing community to solve the mystery of his missing sister. The novel was the National Book Award finalist.

The noir-ish thriller bowed in late 2016 to decent reviews, but the series generated little buzz during its initial 10-episode run. Regardless, Hulu moved forward with a second season, primarily because, well, it picked the show up for two seasons right out of the gate (i.e. the streamer was legally obligated to honor its initial commitment).

Nobody talks about anything on Hulu except “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and that’s a shame because if “The Path” gets canceled without resolving some shit I’ll be pissed. Luckily, the drama series “Chance,” despite the first season’s middling reviews, is returning this fall. The series, based on a novel of the same name and written by Kem Nunn, actually received a two-season order from the get-go, with ten episodes in each season.

It’s easy to see why people will compare Hulu’s newest original series, Chance, with Fox’s long-running drama House.

Yes, they both find Hugh Laurie playing troubled doctors dealing with their fair share of personal and professional ailments, battled on a seemingly hourly basis, but neither share the same DNA. House was broadcast melodrama with nearly 200 episodes under its belt centered around the Head of Diagnostic Medicine in a fictionalized high-end New Jersey hospital. Chance, meanwhile, is a decidedly more intimate, accessible noir-tinged character drama following the social and, perhaps, mental decline of a broke, divorced and emotionally/physically exhausted neuropsychiatrist. Neither were particularly lighthearted, but Chance is a bleaker, more adult-orientated exploration into crime, corruption and psychological unrest. Those expecting another quippy, enjoyably pessimistic PhD Laurie doctor will need to look elsewhere. That’s likely for the best.

Following up a stellar turn on “Veep” — as well as his Emmy-nominated performance in “The Night Manager” — Hugh Laurie is taking his talents to Hulu in the drama series, “Chance.”

Based on the novel by Kem Nunn, Laurie plays Dr. Eldon Chance, a neuropsychiatrist who gets overly involved with the problems of one of his patients. Diane Farr has been cast in a recurring role in the Chance TV series for Hulu. The streaming service ordered two 10-episode seasons of this medical thriller, based on the Kem Nunn novel, back in January. Farr played behavioral specialist Megan Reeves, on Numb3rs, which was cancelled by CBS after six seasons.

As it was with his successful House TV series, Chance is both the show title, and the name of the doctor/main character (Dr. Eldon Chance), played by Laurie. Farr is set as Chance's ex-wife, Christina. The cast also includes: Greta Lee, Gretchen Mol, LisaGay Hamilton, Paul Adelstein, and Stefania Lavie Owen.

Yes, Hulu has made a 20-episode, two-season order for Chance, a drama starring Hugh Laurie as doctor — though this time as a forensic neuropsychiatrist named Eldon Chance. But while House mostly kept to the hospital, Chance, which is based on a novel from Kem Nunn, will take Laurie's doctor into San Francisco's criminal underworld, after "an ill-advised decision involving a patient possibly suffering from multiple personality disorder." Room's Lenny Abrahamson is set to direct a few episodes of the series, so here's to hoping the criminal underworld is a little more palatable than Brie Larson's room. Chance is set to premiere later this year, after the release of Hulu's first two dramas, The Path and 11.22.63.

Based on the novel by Kem Nunn, it follows a neuropsychiatrist who finds himself at odds with the abusive spouse of a patient. The twist? That antagonist is also works for the police department. Hugh Laurie is heading back to the hospital. After returning to TV in an expectation-shattering guest turn on "Veep" last season, the former "House" star has signed on to star in a new medical series picked up by Hulu Wednesday afternoon. "Chance," based on the book by Kem Nunn, earned a 20-episode two-season order after a bit of a bidding war between the streaming service and broadcast networks. Chance becomes the target of her abusive spouse, who also happens to be a police detective who doesn't exactly go by the book. The doctor soon descends into the city’s darkest corners, all while dealing with a rambunctious teenage daughter.

The doctor is in (deep doo-doo) at Hulu.

Last night, FX delivered the new promo/spoiler clip (below) for their upcoming "Sons Of Anarchy" episode 4 of season 7, and it appears to be wicked intense and highly dramatic as major explosions take place, more guns get pulled, and more! The episode is titled, "Poor Little Lambs" The new,4th episode short description reads like this: "A past effort to help one ally, is going to lead to trouble with another." The episode was written by Kem Nunn & Kurt Sutter and it was directed by Guy Ferland. Episode 4 is scheduled to air on Tuesday night, September 30th at 10pm on FX. Stay tuned.

Recently, FX dished a new, short spoiler teaser for their upcoming "Sons Of Anarchy" episode 4 of season 7. We've also got a title for it which is labeled, "Poor Little Lambs," and it turns out that more trouble will take place between different allies. Their official episode 4 teaser description, reads like this: "Sons of Anarchy - Episode 7.04 - Poor Little Lambs: “A past effort to help one ally leads to trouble with another." The episode was written by Kem Nunn & Kurt Sutter and it was directed by Guy Ferland. Episode 4 is set to air on Tuesday night, September 30th at 10pm on FX. In addition to that, we've also got a spoiler teaser for episode 5 labeled, " Some Strange Eruption." It reads like this: "Looking for the source of a betrayal leads to violence at the Stockton Ports." It's set to air on Tuesday night October 7th.

Kem Nunn has signed with Wme. He is a writer/co-executive producer on FX’s Sons Of Anarchy and also co-created and wrote HBO’s surfer series John From Cincinnati. Nunn also is the author of books including Pomona Queen, Unassigned Territory, Tijuana Straits, Chance and such “surf noir” novels as Tapping The Source and Dogs Of Winter. He continues to be repped by Echo Lake Entertainment. India de Beaufort has inked with Gersh. She was a regular on ABC Family’s Jane By Design and starred in Comedy Central’s series Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.
