Subhash K Jha Revisits Bejoy Nambiar’s 2011 Shaitan
Image
It has been 14 years since Bejoy Nambiar’s Shaitan hit the big screen. Subhash K Jha looks back at the drama and talks with the director about making the film.

In Bejoy Nambiar’ Shaitan, the skilful interweavement of strong storytelling and powerful performances(where do all these talented youngsters come from?!) is underpinned by a wild sense of humour that shows up at the oddest of places to remind us that cinema is not about following all the punctuation rules of storytelling. It’s about knowing when and where to revv up the drama to just that right pitch of crescendo to carry us into a tripped-out world of hedonism and redemption.

This stunning tale of five misguided youngsters from the uppercrust displays a flair for unleashing an energy that leaves us breathless with anticipation. It’s tough to keep up with the film’s unbridled zest for momentum. From...

Finding His Frame: Ankith Madhav’s Steady Rise Through Indian Cinema
Image
In a film industry obsessed with noise, Ankith Madhav is quietly building a reputation for precision. Whether it’s the clipped authority of Yogesh Yadav in Kannur Squad or the understated intensity in Richie Mehta’s Poacher, there’s something strikingly deliberate about the way he moves through roles—like an actor who knows the power of restraint.

Originally based in Mumbai before the pandemic, Ankith now works largely out of Kochi. It’s a geographical shift that’s gone unnoticed by many, especially after Kannur Squad positioned him convincingly as a North Indian officer. For audiences and casting directors alike, his fluency in Hindi and body language lent an authenticity that blurred lines between actor and character.

“I still get messages asking if I’m from outside Kerala,” Ankit Madhav says with a half-smile, but there’s no frustration—just the quiet satisfaction of a performance that convinced.

The Powerhouse Performer Mita Vashisht On The Fabulous Droh Kaal
Image
Subhash K Jha spoke with the powerhouse performer Mita Vashisht about her experiences working on Govind Nihalani’s powerful drama Droh Kaal, which also featured Om Puri, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, and Ila Arun.

Droh Kaal was an important film for your career?

Thirty years of Droh Kaal ! It is worth celebrating. It continues to resonate with our times. It is one of the most powerful and evocative films committed to principles of life and character. Droh Kaal also continues to be one of the most original scripts ever written. There is another unique aspect to Droh Kaal .

And what is that?

Normally, it is South Indian films which are remade into Hindi. But in this case, it was the other way around: Kamal Haasanji had taken the rights of Droh Kaal and made a Tamil film Kuruthipunal. And that, too, was successful.

Droh Kaal was your first significant lead,...

‘White Tiger’ Star Adarsh Gourav, Shanaya Kapoor to Headline Genre-Bending ‘Tu Yaa Main,’ Teaser Unveiled (Exclusive)
Image
India’s Colour Yellow continues its streak of unconventional storytelling with “Tu Yaa Main,” a new thriller pairing BAFTA nominee Adarsh Gourav with newcomer Shanaya Kapoor in what the filmmakers describe as an “ultimate date fright film.”

The project marks the first collaboration between producers Aanand L. Rai and director Bejoy Nambiar, known for his atmospheric thriller “Shaitan.” The teaser unfolds in what’s described as “hauntingly atmospheric backwaters,” offering glimpses of a narrative that oscillates between romance and pulse-pounding suspense.

The film is positioned as an adrenaline-charged experience that seamlessly blends love, primal terror, and survival. Produced by Himanshu Sharma (the “Haseen Dillruba” franchise) and written by Abhishek Bandekar, the core narrative thrives on the lead pair’s strikingly different socio-economic backgrounds — a deliberate clash that speaks to the characters’ conflicting worldviews.

“With ‘Tu Yaa Main,’ we’re pushing the boundaries of romance and survival in a way that...

Looking back at Bejoy Nambiar’s David As It Clocks 12 Years
Image
Bejoy Nambiar’s second feature film David (after Shaitaan) interconnects the lives of three characters named David, played with outstanding conviction by actors belonging to three different generations. They three protagonists who by chance share the same name didn’t have to be linked in the plot at all. Each David occupies a distinctive emotional spatial and chronological dimension. Each story is told with a muted flourish that eschews the flamboyant edginess of a recent, highly favoured and over-flavoured genre of Hindi cinema…you know the Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj genre where the characters are darkly drawn from life’s most somber colours.

Nambiar’s universe is populated by victims who refuse to bow down to what we call destiny and what in many circumstances is plain cowardice. In the hard-hitting story about a young rock musician’s conflict with religious fundamentalism Vinay Virmani(a prized find) confronts Hindu radical...

‘Dange’ Movie Review | Engaging Cinematography Disjointed Narrative
Image
The Shaitan & David director Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Dange’ is a dark students’ saga set in Goa. The narrative is a cross between college students conflicts within and outside. Dange begins with a promising scene when a sloshed Zeel (Harshvardhan Rane) rushes to present his paper the 4th time, with great help from his friends but fails to make it even after standing in front of the professors due to his imbalanced mental condition.

Dange is primarily about Zeel and Yuva (Ehan Bhat) who were best (childhood) friends but one incidence sours their friendship; Yuva faces molestation and humiliation for which he blames Zeel, now his senior in the college. Yuva is deeply affected by the incident. There is also Gayatri (T J Bhanu) seeking justice for a young Dalit student who was raped and impregnated. Yuva and Zeel, driven by their own conflicts, eventually realize a greater threat when they overhear plans to harm Gayatri.

Elisha Mayor opens up about her role as a football player in 'Kaala'
Image
Actress Elisha Mayor, who plays Aaloka in ‘Kaala’, dived into her character’s mindset, channeled her fearless side, and even dressed the part. Talking about the same, Elisha in ‘Kaala’ said: “Aaloka is a footballer, but before developing her physicality, I wanted to understand her mentality. She is very different from me, and to find her in me, I had to tap into an unabashed, fearless, reckless side of myself. Apart from practicing football, I used emotional triggers to understand how she feels and thinks; and so how she acts and behaves came to me as I started dressing up like her and expressing myself as her.”

“The series has a dark theme and Aaloka on paper was just a tough, tenacious and feisty young athlete. I understood that she’s also just a young girl, who has her own vulnerabilities and weaknesses, which she guards by fighting back and acting tough.

‘Kaala’ (2023) Review: A Predictable Investigative Thriller That Leaves The Audience Frustrated
Image
An investigative thriller that happens to be a period drama may bring positive results if the narrative is written and executed well enough. Sacred Games, in the recent past, was the only web series that dealt with both genres effectively. Even though the first season lived up to expectations, the second season was kind of a letdown. Kaala, created and directed by Bejoy Nambiar and Shubhra Swarup, presents this crime investigative saga that spans over three decades. The show is a Disney+ Hotstar Special that was released on September 15, 2023. Kaala is the story of a massive money laundering ring and the cat and mouse chase between law enforcement agencies and the businessman running this racket. In that process an Ib officer comes across a cold secret that might change his perception of things around him.

Ritwik Mukherjee, an officer with Ib Kolkata plans to arrest Naman Arya, the waste recycling king of the city.

Web Series Review | Kaala | Engaging Thriller
Image
One of the last reels of the series shows the protagonist passing through a dark tunnel into the light, metaphorically telling that there is light at the end of tunnel in terms of possibilities of curbing and dealing with the black money mafia. Kaala seems to be derived from the term ‘Kaala Paisa’ or ‘Black Money’. Earlier filmmakers dealt with the counterfeit notes mafia in ‘Farzi’, this time around Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘Kaala’ deals with ‘Hawala’ dealings. From the director who made thrillers like Shaitan, David & Wazir, Kaala adds to his exceptional storytelling repertoire and introduces us to the term ‘Reverse Hawala’ – converting white money into black and pumping huge stash of cash for illicit activities including terrorism.

Kaala is set against the backdrop of chaotic Kolkata, a riveting tale of love, loss, betrayal and irony. With young and ambitious Ib officer Ritwik Mukherjee (Avinash Tiwary) life seems like a series of random events,...
