“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft”
Recently renewed for Season 2, the animated “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” TV series, starring Hayley Atwell, Allen Maldonado and Earl Baylon, is now streaming on Netflix:

“…Lara Croft is depicted as an athletic female with brown eyes and dark auburn hair, frequently kept in a plait or ponytail.

“The character's classic costume is a turquoise leotard, light brown shorts, calf-high boots and tall white socks.

“Accessories include fingerless gloves, a backpack, a utility belt with holsters on either side, and two pistols.

“The video game sequels introduced new outfits designed for different environments, such as underwater and cold weather.

“In the later games, Croft wears a crop top, camouflage pants and black or light brown shorts.

“When exploring, she often carries two pistols, but has used other weaponry throughout the series.

“The animated series is set in the same continuity as the video game reboot trilogy that...

Amazon's Tomb Raider Series Eyes X-Men, Hercule Poirot Stars for Lara Croft
Image
Prime Video's upcoming series adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game franchise just took a huge step forward in the development process. The hotly-anticipated live-action series has begun searching for who will play the lead character Lara Croft, with two actors already poised to test for the part.

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios has assembled a wishlist of accomplished young actors for the role of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, which is being written and executive-produced by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge. At the top of the list are Sophie Turner and Lucy Boynton, who are both slated to test for the role. Whoever is ultimately cast, whether it is Turner, Boynton, or someone else (Deadpool & Wolverine's Emma Corrin and Terminator: Dark Fate's Mackenzie Davis are on the wishlist but not believed to be testing), will become the third actor after Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander to portray Lara Croft in live-action.

'There Will Be Surprises': Tomb Raider's Only Survivor Trilogy Actor for Netflix Anime Reveals More About the Show's Best Relationship
Image
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's Earl Baylon -- the lone returning actor from Tomb Raider's Survivor trilogy -- recently opened up about the many positive things to draw from Lara's friendship with longtime companion Jonah Maiava.

"I like the fact that there are few secrets between the two," Baylon told Tomb Raider about returning to the franchise for Netflix's animated series -- and why Lara and Jonah's dynamic successfully builds upon their characters' past experiences. "Almost nothing gets left unsaid -- I think we could use more of that Irl. All of us could use a person you have that level of comfort with, someone with whom you feel wholly supported. I think that's what Lara and Jonah have -- it's honestly kinda inspirational," he continued.

‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ Renewed at Netflix
Tomb Raider : La légende de Lara Croft (2024)
Netflix is plotting a new set of adventures for its version of Lara Croft.

The streamer has renewed its animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. The pickup was a relatively quick one, coming just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered.

Based on the long-running Tomb Raider video game franchise, The Legend of Lara Croft follows the adventurer (voiced by Hayley Atwell) after the events of Square Enix’s video game reboot trilogy. The show aims to fill in a gap in Croft’s story between the reboot trilogy (which served as something of an origin story for the character) and the original games.

Season two, per Netflix, will find Lara discovering a trail of stolen African Orisha masks. “She joins forces with her best friend Sam (voiced by Karen Fukuhara in season one) to retrieve the precious artifacts,” the logline reads.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's Hayley Atwell is more than ready to continue Lara Croft's globetrotting exploits in the franchise's next iteration.

In a conversation with GamesRadar, the Agent Carter star spoke favorably about bringing Lara to life in Netflix's animated continuation of the Crystal Dynamics games and her willingness to star in future seasons. "I just had an absolute blast doing this with this creative team. I've loved working with [director Meredith Layne] and [showrunner Tasha Huo] on this, and having Netflix behind it," she said, adding, "It feels like an elevated animation [and] that they really want[ed] to get it right emotionally. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft TV Review: Hayley Atwell kicks ass as the video game icon
Image
Plot: Following the events of the Survivor series, Lara Croft has abandoned her friends to embark on increasingly more perilous solo adventures. But she must return home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief with an uncanny personal connection. Her daring pursuit will take her on an adventure around the world and to the depths of forgotten tombs, where she will be forced to confront her true self, and decide just what kind of hero she wants to become.

Review: The Tomb Raider franchise has always been stronger as a video game than it has been in live-action. The two Angelina Jolie-led feature films and the Alicia Vikander-led reboot were met with lukewarm reception. While the reboot hewed closer to the grittier tone of the more recent video games, none of the adaptations have captured the energy of Lara Croft...

'For as Long as Netflix Will Let Us': Tomb Raider Showrunner on the Series' Future With Lara Croft

Tasha Huo would love to continue Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's adventures for years to come, with the showrunner opening up about the series' titular character and her potential future development in a recent interview.

Speaking with Anime Trending, the Tomb Raider showrunner discussed her series' approach to molding young Lara into her original Tomb Raider persona and how many stories she hopes to tell in this prequel -- provided it doesn't get canceled. Citing Lara's shift in demeanor between the original PlayStation era and the recent Crystal Dynamics trilogy, she noted, "I think we're going to take as much time as Netflix will give to us. There's a certain version of her you meet in the show and she's already Classic Lara. But to me, that's not really interesting. I'm curious about how she builds her networks out, how she builds out her relationships. What are the informative traumas,...

Tomb Raider Reboot Still Moving Ahead With Phoebe Waller-Bridge
Image
Despite speculation from the fan base, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider reboot is still moving ahead at Amazon MGM Studios. The new live-action series was announced in early 2023, with the Fleabag creator and star attached to write and executive produce the series. It was also revealed that the show will tie into an upcoming movie, which will recast the character again after the failed 2018 reboot, starring Alicia Vikander.

Speaking to Variety, Amazong MGM Studios head, Jennifer Salke, gave a long-awaited update on the show. "Phoebe is well into it and working in close partnership with [Tomb Raider general manager] Dallas Dickinson and the game producers," Salke revealed. News about the series had gone radio silent following the project's initial announcement. As a result, fans began speculating if the show and new movie had been canceled, especially with the brand-new animated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series having just been released on Netflix.

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft
Image
Streaming on: Netflix

Episodes viewed: 8 of 8

Ever since debuting as a blocky adventure video game back in 1996, the Tomb Raider series has shown remarkable sticking power. Lara Croft has appeared in over 20 games, three live-action films (with another reboot planned), comics, novels, and now this new anime-inspired animated series. Set between the recent game reboot trilogy and the original ’90s series, The Legend Of Lara Croft looks to find the balance of the character, landing somewhere between the brutally violent recent games and the less serious adventurer from the earlier entries. The result is a different but not entirely successful take on one of gaming’s most enduring icons.

It hits the ground running in Episode 1, making a case for its animated medium with the kind of high-flying action sequences that would not have been possible with Lara, live-action edition. The show does a decent-enough job of capturing Lara’s signature gymnastics,...

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft Voice Cast & Character Guide
Image
The cast of Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft includes some talented and noteworthy actors who will bring the iconic archaeologist and her friends to life. The Legend of Lara Croft is an animated show that continues Lara's story after Shadow of the Tomb Raider in the Tomb Raider timeline. Tomb Raider has been an iconic media franchise since 1996, when the first game was released, and there have been several live-action Tomb Raider movies since then, like Angelina Jolie's duology.

Lara Croft is an icon of both gaming and media as a whole, and she has incredibly big boots to fill. Any actor who plays the legendary archaeologist is taking on an extremely important role, but The Legend of Lara Croft seems to have cast her perfectly. Hayley Atwell has been described as Lara Croft in real life, and the rest of the show's cast seems like the perfect support for her performance.

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft Review - Netflix Anime Raises The Bar For Future Adaptations
Image
Since the franchise's launch in 1996, the Tomb Raider series has seen multiple adaptations over the years, namely the big screen incarnations led by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander as the iconic video game adventurer. Up until now, though, it's not been given a proper small-screen treatment, the sole exemption being 2007's Revisioned featuring Minnie Driver voicing the role in five to seven-minute episodes. Now, thankfully, it's getting its proper due with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which proves to be an exciting and stylish adaptation, despite some of its flaws.

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Season 1 Review — An Epic Globe-Trotting Adventure
Image
I will admit that I’m not super familiar with Tomb Raider as a franchise. I know of it, obviously. Lara Croft’s iconography and historical significance in the gaming space is inescapable at this point. And it’s something I always meant to get around to given that, even without the added context, “Female Indiana Jones In The Modern Day” is an extremely strong hook.

But for one reason or another, I just never got around to playing any of the games or experiencing any of the previous adaptations. And as such, though the casting of Agent Carter herself, Hayley Atwell, in the lead role caught my eye, I was concerned about how Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft would play to a newcomer such as myself.

‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ Explores ‘The Four Perils’ of Chinese Mythology
Image
There were two things that Tasha Huo (“The Witcher: Blood Origin”) wanted to accomplish as showrunner of the “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” 2D animated series (currently streaming on Netflix). She wanted to make the badass archaeologist/adventurer more vulnerable and explore Chinese mythology.

“She’s always been such a superhero in the video games,” Huo told IndieWire, “but in a TV show, we get to explore more about her emotional place where you want to see her grow out of something difficult. So that was always a starting place for me, finding a low point for her. And how does Lara Croft come out of a low point? It’s going to be more epic by the nature of who she is and the adventure we set her upon.”

The animated eight-episode series from Legendary Television bridges the timeline between the reboot “Survivor” trilogy of video games...

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft release date, synopsis and more to know
Image
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is about to bring the beloved adventurer to life again, so here’s what you need to know about the animated series!

Debuting in 1996, Tomb Raider became one of the biggest video game hits of its era and launched an epic franchise. The reason was that Lara Croft, the gorgeous British archaeologist, packed twin pistols and had a fun style as she navigated the world, taking on tombs and various enemies. The character soon became a staple of cosplay conventions.

Lara was brought to life in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film, starring Angelina Jolie in the title role. It was followed by 2003’s sequel, The Cradle of Life. However, both that film and the 2003 video game entry Angel of Darkness disappointed, and the character fell in popularity.

In 2013, the franchise was revived with a new Tomb Raider game that rebooted the series.

Hayley Atwells Lara Croft Is Doing Something Neither Angelina Jolie Nor Alicia Vikanders Tomb Raider Movies Did
Image
Hayley Atwell will be taking on the mantle of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, and her rendition of the iconic archaeologist could do something neither Angelina Jolie nor Alicia Vikander accomplished. Atwell is just the most recent in a long line of actors who have played Lara Croft in various Tomb Raider video games, movies, and now shows. Angelina Jolie first brought the character to life in 2001 with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Alicia Vikander rebooted the live-action side of the franchise with 2018's Tomb Raider. Atwell, however, could soon surpass them both.

Both Lara Croft and Tomb Raider have changed significantly over the past 28 years. In that time, there have been various reboots, restarted continuities, and more. Despite all the franchise's ups and downs, however, Lara has remained one of the most iconic characters in gaming, even if she struggles to find the same popularity in film and television.

What was once considered to be a "cursed" venture by Hollywood has become the new go-to as comic book movies are beginning to repair themselves after a turbulent past few years. While shows like HBO's The Last of Us and Prime Video's Fallout have finally figured out how to adapt a video game into a live-action setting, animated adaptations have been flourishing for years.

MovieWeb spoke with Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's creator and showrunner Tasha Huo about how she brought the beloved video game character to life in the new series. During our discussion, we asked Huo why she chose to adapt the beloved Tomb Raider games...

Tomb Raider Showrunner Reveals How Much of Peggy Carter Hayley Atwell Brought to Her Lara Croft Performance
Image
Comparisons between Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft's lead and Hayley Atwell's Marvel counterpart were inevitable, but the biggest source of inspiration might be Atwell herself.

Speaking to IGN, showrunner Tasha Huo talked about recruiting the Agent Carter star to voice Lara Croft in animation and whether traces of Peggy Carter will appear in the Tomb Raider's younger self. "I would say [Lara is] separate from Agent Carter, but I think what was funny is that we brought a lot of Hayley into the show," she revealed, pointing out how "the more we realized how much of a badass [Atwell] was, the more it became, 'If you're jumping out of a plane, Lara, this is sort of what you have to do,' and then she would be like, 'Oh, yeah, I just jumped out of a plane last week, so I got this.'"

‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ Teaser Trailer Marks an Animated Return of the Badass Archaeologist
Image
Netflix dropped the teaser trailer for “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” the animated series (premiering October 10) that reintroduces the badass archaeologist/adventurer from the popular video game franchise. This comes on the heels of Netflix’s anime adaptation of James Cameron’s “Terminator” franchise, “Terminator Zero” (premiering August 29), from Skydance, Japanese animation studio Production I.G, and showrunner Mattson Tomlin.

Now, not only is Lara Croft animated, but this time it’s personal, and her journey turns existential.

Picking up after the 2018 game “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” the colorful 2D animated series bridges the timeline between the reboot “Survivor” trilogy of games and the original games. It finds Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) abandoning her friends but being drawn back home when a dangerous and powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor by a thief from her past. Thus, her globe-trotting, tomb-chasing adventure finally forces her to...

Tomb Raider: The Legend Of Lara Croft Trailer Reveals First Look At Action-Packed Sequel To The Games
Image
We finally have the first teaser trailer for Netflix's Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (via GameFragger.com) and, perhaps the most intriguing thing about this series is the fact it picks up after the events of the latest video game.

Typically, a show like this would be a straightforward adaptation of a game or an original story that draws inspiration from it. How accessible this "sequel" approach will make The Legend of Lara Croft remains to be seen, though the sneak peek promises a fun, action-packed adventure.

It was back in May that we learned Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Tomb Raider TV series is officially moving forward at Prime Video. However, that's set to be its own thing and has no ties to the games or previous movies starring Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

As for this Lara Croft, she'll be voiced by Captain America: The First Avenger...

10 Animated Shows And Movies That Blew Us Away At Netflix's Animation Presentation
Image
We're just a few days away from the premiere of "Ultraman: Rising" on Netflix, the latest addition to the ever-growing animation library of the streamer. Animation has been on shaky ground for the last few years, with the animation guild growing stronger to fight for fair contractions as creatives continue to battle against the dystopian threat of artificial intelligence. Fortunately, animation is still as popular and well-loved as ever, and Netflix has been absolutely crushing it as of late. Not only did the streamer pull in an Academy Award for Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio" in 2022, but shows like "Blue Eye Samurai," "Arcane," "Love, Death, & Robots," and movies like "Wendell & Wild," "The Sea Beast," and "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" are some of the best releases of original animation, period.

Today I was in attendance at the Next on Netflix: Animation event to preview their upcoming slate of animation,...
