Star Trek: Discovery concluded its run last year, drawing the curtain on the flagship series of the Star Trek franchise’s modern resurgence on television. Despite the show’s popularity, several of its creative choices were heavily criticized and disliked by the fanbase, including its depiction of the Klingon race.

During an interview, the show’s lead creature designer, Neville Page, spoke about designing the Klingons for the first season of Discovery. However, Page was aware of the backlash received over the new depiction of the Klingons and explained the reason behind their controversial nature. The second season of "Star Trek: Picard" featured a convoluted plot. In it, Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart) was abruptly whisked off to a parallel dimension by the trickster god Q (John De Lancie) where the Earth had descended into a fascist hellscape. All of Earth's enemies had been wiped out by the planet's military, and humanity was on the verge of killing the very last Borg. To address the problem, Picard and his friends have to travel back in time to the year 2024 to discover how everything went sour. Abrams' 2011 sci-fi film "Super 8" is an unabashed homage to co-producer Steven Spielberg's own "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" as well as to the myriad "E.T." knockoffs that followed it throughout the '80s. Set in the very early 1980s, "Super 8" is about a quintet of 13-year-old Goonies who are busy making their own amateur zombie thriller on consumer-grade Super 8 cameras when they run afoul of a local military conspiracy hiding something from the public. This year’s hair, makeup, and costume winners at the Creative Arts Emmys represented some of the most ambitious and inventive works of beautifying.

The final night of Emmys in these categories saw a few fan favorites be recognized. HBO’s runaway hit “Euphoria” won its second Emmy of the year after winning for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Doniella Davy, Kirsten Coleman, and Tara Lang walked away with the award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup.

The show was also up for an Emmy for their costumes but the Contemporary Costume win went to Debra Hanson and Darci Cheyne for the final season of Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek.” And after winning an Emmy for its Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, Netflix’s “Hollywood” won the award for its period hairstyling, going to Michelle Ceglia, Barry Lee Moe, George Guzman, Michele L. Arvizo, and Maria Elena Pantoja.

The third round of Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out on Wednesday, honoring winners in scripted categories including cinematography, hairstyling, costumes and visual effects.

The 71st Emmy Awards kicked off Saturday and Sunday with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. As a cascade of Emmys were handed out in technical and acting categories, and there were plenty of expected wins and some surprises.

The biggest winner of the two nights combined was HBO’s Game of Thrones, which garnered 10 Emmys on Sunday, while HBO’s Chernobyl earned seven. Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won six including acting accolades for Jane Lynch and Luke Kirby, while The Handmaid’s Tale surprisingly swooped in and took guest acting trophies for Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones.

“Games of Thrones” raked in 10 trophies on Sunday to dominate the second night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

“Thrones” cleaned up in craft and technical categories, from visual effects to single-camera, non-prosthetic makeup to main title design to drama series casting. The show is the most nominated program in the 2019 Emmy race, with a total of 32 noms and up for 18 kudos on Sunday. As expected, “Thrones” is heading into the Sept. 22 Primetime Emmy Awards with strong momentum to triumph once again at the ceremony, which will be telecast live on Fox.

On Sunday, HBO’s “Chernobyl” grabbed seven wins, followed by Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” with six. Stripped-down creature feature “Sweetheart” stars Kiersey Clemons as a shipwreck survivor on an uninhabited island that unfortunately turns out to have one frequent, unfriendly, nonhuman visitor. The sparing glimpses of the scaly whatsis and near-complete lack of dialogue (to a point) make this a reasonably offbeat wade into a familiar Black Lagoon. But despite decent suspense, “Sleight” director J.D. Dillard’s good-looking second feature is a chiller that’s not quite original or stylish enough to be memorable.

Clemons’ Jenn washes onto her isle barely conscious, though in better shape than a fellow passenger (Benedict Samuel) on her storm-downed pleasure cruise, who quickly expires. The situation is dire, but the heroine proves resourceful, quickly figuring out how to spear-fish and make a fire. She also finds signs of prior habitation: A campsite whose vacationers oddly left their gear behind — and more disturbingly, an apparent group gravesite.

Showrunners David Kajganich and Soo Hugh always wanted to make a terrifying yet sympathetic hybrid monster that consumes the crews of the Hms Erebus and Hms Terror in AMC’s 19th-century thriller, “The Terror.” Thus, the treacherous journey through the frozen wasteland of the Northwest Passage (based on the novel by Dan Simmons) becomes a tragic tale of mutual destruction for crew and monster alike.

The challenge: How to design and animate the mythological CG monster called the Tuunbaq (culled from the indigenous Inuit tribe that populates the region where the story takes place)? “Dave and Soo were very specific about their vision,” said concept designer Neville Page. “It’s a bear but it has human qualities. It was a challenge to hit this target without it turning into something that’s a caricature or a kid’s creature.”

When Rainn Wilson’s Harry Mudd makes his entrance into CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery,” he does so in dramatic fashion, stepping onto a cargo bay deck through the mouth of a gormagander. The fictional creature is referred to in the episode and by the show’s creative team as a “space whale” and looks the way it sounds: Picture a whale redesigned to swim through space instead of water. “Discovery” writers dreamed up the creature as a way for Mudd to sneak on board in an episode where he attempts to take over the show’s starship. The gormagander is the central element of what quickly becomes an action scene when Mudd begins firing at crew members. Initially attempted as a practical effect, it was ultimately executed by the show’s digital-effects team.

The new design for the Klingons in “Star Trek: Discovery” has been polarizing with fans. Some are intrigued by the new take on the bellicose alien species, while others decry what they perceived to be flouting canon. On the most recent “After Trek,” lead creature designer Neville Page and prosthetics/special FX makeup effects department head Glenn Hetrick explained that Bryan Fuller, who has since departed the show, was a huge influence on what the revamped Klingons look like.

“The biggest thing we did was we removed the hair,” Page said, which allowed the prosthetics department to reveal “detail on the back of the head… and the cool stuff underneath.”

Page also revealed the signature ridges contain extra sensory receptors, and the spinal column grows up the back of the head, which is full of nerve endings.

As the first new “Star Trek” television series in over a decade, “Star Trek: Discovery” has gotten a lot of attention since it was first announced in November 2015.

There have been production delays and some behind-the-scenes drama – specifically, the departure of original showrunner Bryan Fuller. But fans are now finally on the verge of actually getting to see the sci-fi drama in action — there’s even a premiere date, which means it’s really happening.

Below, here’s everything that’s been revealed to date about what to expect from the upcoming CBS All Access series, from when and where it launches to the producers’ groundbreaking narrative choices.

Season 1 Has a Complicated Release Strategy

The first episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” officially premieres on Sunday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. Et on CBS (the actual network). At that same time, the episode will also be available on demand and on CBS All Access, and CBS All Access subscribers will be able to watch the second episode as well.

The first two episodes, according to CBS All Access President and COO Marc DeBevoise, “set up [the show] like a movie. They will serve to create the foundation of the story line for the series.”

Yes, viewers will need to subscribe to CBS All Access to watch the show as a whole. “Discovery” will run for eight episodes this fall before “Chapter 1” (that’s what CBS is calling the first half) ends, with “Chapter 2” picking up in January 2018. Essentially, it’s the sort of split-season approach viewers have seen before with shows like “Breaking Bad.”

“Discovery” Has No Connection With Chris Pine

Sorry for the nerd moment, but the recent feature film revival of “Star Trek” technically exists in a different timeline from the established “Trek” television universe. The events of the 2009 film established that every time you see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto on screen, they’re part of what we call the “Kelvin-verse,” named after the spaceship destroyed in the opening minutes of the first film directed by J.J. Abrams.

“Discovery,” meanwhile, takes place 10 years before James T. Kirk became a Starfleet officer, but in the same timeline that “The Next Generation,” “Deep Space Nine,” and “Voyager” exist in. If this proves confusing, just think to yourself that movies and TV shows are different entities. Because, in this case, that’s true.

The Show’s Lead is a Female First Officer, and She’s Probably Met Spock

Meet Michael Burnham!

What we know about her so far: She’s human, and the “ward” of Ambassador Sarek (played here by James Frain), which means that she is technically the adopted sister of Sarek’s son Spock. The producers have been otherwise tightlipped on what Burnham’s relationship with Spock might be, beyond a “wait-and-see” messaging.

Burnham was raised on Vulcan, and considers Sarek a mentor. Her parents are dead, and Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) is another mentor figure. At Comic-Con, it was also mentioned that she graduated from the Vulcan Science Academy (no easy task) and is a rising star in Starfleet.

Martin-Green’s availability was mentioned as a factor in the show’s delay in launching — executive producer Alex Kurtzman told critics that the casting process “was a tough search. And, you know, you’re always hoping for the perfect person to walk in the door, and we really did not want to set out until we knew we had what we needed, and we saw Sonequa… We saw her work, and we went, ‘She’s the one.'”

Unfortunately, Martin-Green was committed to “The Walking Dead” at that time, so according to Kurtzman, “we felt that that was another reason to wait. And so, we did.”

Here’s Why Burnham’s First Name is Michael

According to co-showrunner Aaron Harberts, the name “Michael” was selected because of Fuller. “We’ve worked on many shows with Bryan, and it’s a motif. It’s his signature move to name his lead women with names that would typically be associated as male,” he said during the Television Critics Association press tour.

“An archangel is named Michael as well, and it just had a lot of potency for us,” he added.

Martin-Green had a strong take on that choice, saying that “I appreciated the sort of statement it makes all on its own to have this woman with this male name… I also just decided for my creation and for my background and whatnot that I was named after my father.” If we ever see Burnham’s father in flashbacks, know that his name is theoretically Michael.

The Cast is Crazy Diverse Beyond Its Lead

“Discovery’s” supporting cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, James Frain, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo, Jason Isaacs, Kenneth Mitchell, and Rekha Sharma.

Many of these actors are non-white and/or playing aliens, such as Jones as Saru, who is a member of a new alien race called the Kelpien. Kelpians are very tall and apparently have hooves — click here to see Jones demonstrate Saru’s very specific walk during the Comic-Con panel.

Yes, The Klingons Look Different

“Discovery” features not just new alien species, but new takes on established races. As IndieWire observed when the first trailer premiered, the physical representation of Klingons in “Star Trek” has never been consistent over the course of the franchise’s history, so it’s no surprise they look different yet again.

According to Harberts, the new look for the Klingons was deliberately driven by Fuller: “One of the things he really wanted to do was shake up the design of the Klingons, and one of the first things that he ever pitched to us when we were deciding whether or not to come on the show was his aesthetic for the Klingons and how important it was that they not be the thugs of the universe, that they be sexy and vital and different from what had come before.”

Harberts credited creature concept designer Neville Page and make-up department head Glenn Hetrick with working with Fuller on the Klingon design — it was just one of the elements that the producers pointed to as a sign that Fuller had had a lasting impact on the series.

“We honor what he did, and we love so much of what’s there, and much of what’s there… it came from his mind,” Kurtzman said.

“Discovery” Will Feature the First Gay “Trek” TV Romance

At Comic-Con, it was revealed that Rapp’s character, science officer Paul Stamets, would be in a relationship with the Discovery’s chief medical officer Hugh Culber, played by “My So-Called Life” star Wilson Cruz.

While the film “Star Trek Beyond” chose to reveal that Sulu (as played by John Cho) was in a committed relationship with a man, this is the first time a television series has not just depicted a gay character, but given him a fleshed-out romance. It’s one of the show’s most promising commitments to diversity.

This Is “The Most Serialized ‘Star Trek’ Ever”

According to executive producer Akiva Goldsman, “Discovery” will be more serialized than any other “Trek” series, and he held the first season of “Discovery” up against “Trek’s” previous experiments with ongoing storylines (most notably later seasons of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” which featured multiple examples of multi-episode arcs).

This goes beyond a shift away from “Trek’s” pre-established “mission of the week” format — it has lead to a fundamental change in the “Trek” ethos. Decades ago, “Trek” established a reputation in its writers room for the concept that its central characters should not be flawed characters, that they should instead represent the best that humanity might have to offer on a week-to-week.

There have been exceptions to this principle — witness “Deep Space Nine’s” revolutionary choices, as just one example — but “Discovery” will deliberately veer away from this famous “Trek” tradition, established by original creator Gene Roddenberry, who wrote in the original “Next Generation” series bible that the show was about characters who “have been selected for this mission because of their ability to transcend their human failings.”

Roddenberry’s directive meant that “Trek” characters were supposed to be “above” interpersonal conflict, but that’s a concept that “Discovery” will be veering away from, as a result of its new format. “It’s longform character storytelling. And without conflict, there is no longform character storytelling,” Goldsman said.

Also, In “Star Trek: Discovery,” We Are At War

When “Discovery” begins, things aren’t great between the Klingons and the Federation, and thus the show will deal with some serious drama. “You know, war is the greatest conflict of all,” Martin-Green said, “It’s just about asking those deeply profound questions of “Who am I, and who are you, and how do I relate to you? How do we live with each other? How do we make acculturation a two‑way exchange, rather than me dominating you or you dominating me?”

Goldsman explained: “We are in a time of war, and we are trying to find out who we are as a Federation and as a coalition of peoples in the face of adversity. So it is entirely the outcome role of the show to arrive at the principles — the utopian principles that I think are endemic to ‘Star Trek,’ and at the same time not to suggest that doing that is simple or easy. You can’t simply be accepting and tolerant without working for it, and so this show is about that struggle, and we are really insanely proud of that attempt on our part.”

“Star Trek” Will Always Be About Optimism, Even At Its Darkest Moments

Kurtzman mused that “Discovery” still aimed to pay true to classic “Trek’s” legacy. “I think the defining characteristic of Mr. Roddenberry’s universe is its optimism, as everybody on this panel has discussed, the belief that we can do better; the belief that we can connect; the belief that species and people around the entire galaxy can figure out a way to exist in the Federation; and that wars, if they have to be fought, can be stopped. And we talk about that all the time,” he said.

Goldsman noted in regards to the show’s commitment to inclusion that “we take it really seriously. I mean, for us, ‘Star Trek’ is deeply meaningful. It doesn’t mean we are not going to tell stories that people who don’t like ‘Star Trek’ or have never seen ‘Star Trek’ won’t enjoy, but what you have up here is a lot of folks who can find a TV show [to be] wish fulfillment, can find it close to their calling. It may sound absurd, but it’s true for us, and we are delighted about it.”

For the past six years, genre moviemakers and moneymen have congregated for long weekends at Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, taking part in the Frontières Co-Production Marketplace. Founded in 2012, the market was conceived as a place for horror/fantasy/action auteurs — both established names and newcomers — to pitch projects to potential backers and take part in various networking events.

A highlight of the Market is the opening-day pitch session, in which selected directors, writers, and producers offer multimedia presentations of their nascent features. At the very first Frontières, this event spawned Anouk Whissell, Francois Simard, and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s exuberant futuristic actioner “Turbo Kid”; subsequent movies that took their first steps to fruition there include Steven Kostanski and Jeremy Gillespie’s cult/monster horror film “The Void”; Caroline Labrèche and Steeve Léonard’s science-fiction thriller “Radius,” which premiered at this year’s Fantasia; and Jenn Wexler’s upcoming punk-slasher opus “The Ranger.

Updated Exclusive: The leading prime time director has partnered with renowned stills photographer on a film, TV, music and publishing venture.

Hollywood-based Cinematic Pictures Group kicks off with the TV pilot Purgatory, which Scott will direct from a story he conceived with Victoria Pratt.

Purgatory takes place in the fabled netherworld between heaven and hell and centres on Cyn, a ‘switch’ who can jump between our world and purgatory and inherited the ability from her mother, a split soul.

Scott (main picture), currently in Vancouver shooting Ice for Antoine Fuqua, is developing the project with Ilic, creature and concept designer Neville Page and artist Rob Prior. Pratt will play Cyn’s mother, Gemini / Jezebel.

As the new media format comes into its own, movie studios are starting to adopt the 4K Ultra HD Blu-Rays. As others have announced their initial titles, Paramount has revealed their first films coming to the new format will be the Star Trek reboot and it's sequel, Into Darkness.

20th Century Fox has shut down the Alien fan film that was due to star Carrie Henn.

Sonnet Realm Films had recruited the actress - who has not taken on a film role since she appeared in James Cameron's 1986 sequel Aliens - to star in Alien Identity.

The film would have focused on life 14 years after the events of Aliens, with an alternate timeline.

Adam Sonnet, writer and director of the proposed film, said: "When we decided to make this Alien tribute film we anticipated from the beginning that this could happen. We were hoping that since Fox allowed other fan films in the Alien/Predator universes to be made that they would allow us to do so likewise.

Ross Mathews’ eponymous late-night talk show on E! will not return for a third season, TheWrap reports.

Although the future of Hello Ross became uncertain after Chelsea Handler’s departure from the network, the cancellation is largely due to Mathews’ newest gig. In September, he will join correspondents Maria Menounos and Jason Kennedy on the primetime roundtable series Live From E!, which originated on digital platforms.

Face Off is back tonight, and it hits the ground running. Last season’s Pros vs Rookies was a great theme and hard to beat, but we are promised that Season 6 will be a “season of extremes,” and I can’t wait. Tonight gets us off to a great start; wait until you see the wigs on the Foundation Challenge.

Though you’ll see the fabulous house in which they’re staying during the competition, all you’ll be hearing about is how great the house is. No strategizing, no trash talk. It’s a terrific, informative, inspiring competition show, and as I often say, the only one I follow.

Syfy has picked up Face Off, their makeup artist competition, for a sixth season. The next round will start airing in January.

Season five is currently airing and will conclude on November 5th. The season finale follows the final three contestants as they each create two lead characters from Swan Lake.

Two original Face Off specials will follow later next month.

Naked and Painted will air on November 12th at 9pm. Host McKenzie Westmore will explore the world of body painting with a variety of special guest experts and will feature two start-to-finish body painting demonstrations in the lab.

This season of Face Off has been the best ever. The challenges have been inspired, the contestants ridiculously talented, and the concept of Vets vs Rookies has been a great twist. Happily, Syfy has agreed, today announcing the pickup of a sixth season, as well as two specials that will air next month in the weeks after the November 5th Season 5 finale.

One of the specials, Face Off: Naked and Painted, is of course in support of new series Naked Vegas, the body painting show, but adding in McKenzie Westmore as host of the special gives it a definite bump in coolness. The second special, Face Off: Judges’ Favorites, is the one I’m really looking forward to; some of the creations over the five seasons have been absolutely astounding and it should be terrific seeing them all together in one special.

"Face Off" has been renewed for Season 6 on Syfy. The critically acclaimed special-effects makeup competition is currently airing new episodes of Season 5 on the cable network.

Set to return in January 2014, "Face Off" Season 6 will feature 14 new makeup artists trying to create creatures and characters over a multi-week competition. In addition to this, Syfy will air two "Face Off"-related specials in November: "Naked and Painted" on Nov. 12 and "Top 20 Countdown: Judges' Favorites" on Nov. 19.

The current season of "Face Off" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Syfy. With only five contestants left in the competition -- Miranda Jory, Laney Parkhurst, Tate Steinsiek, Laura Tyler and Roy Wooley -- the upcoming challenge is to create an original dark elf warrior character. In the finale, the final three artists will each create two lead characters for the ballet, "Swan Lake." A performance by the Los Angeles Ballet will show the makeup in action.

I liked the look of the Klingons in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. McKenzie Westmore always enjoys hosting "Face Off," but she admits it's nice to have even more familiar faces around her this time.

Season 5 of Syfy's makeup competition series starts Tuesday (Aug. 13), marking the first time new contestants have been challenged by returning contenders. After four earlier rounds, former "Passions" co-star Westmore felt the time would come for such a ... well, face-off.

"As I was seeing these faces come in," she tells Zap2it, "it was like, 'Omg!' I've still kept in touch with some of these people from afar, so it was really interesting as the host to be seeing them again, having had that familiarity but also having to build that with the newcomers.

"I'm always there with open arms for anyone who walks in, but I always love to be that smile for a newcomer as they walk into 'Face Off.' "
