Why Critically Panned ‘Joker 2’ Could Still Be in the Awards Race for Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix
Image
Lady Gaga will likely take on her first supporting actress Oscar run for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” But how far can “Mother Monster” take a movie with such abysmal reviews?

“Joker: Folie à Deux” picks up with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his violent crimes. As he grapples with his fractured identity, Arthur finds love with fellow inmate Lee (Gaga) and begins embracing the music that has always played inside his chaotic mind.

Read: You can see all Academy Award predictions in all 23 categories on one page on the Variety Awards Circuit: Oscars.

Lady Gaga — “Joker: Folie à Deux”

For those who haven’t seen it, this is not a case of “category fraud.” Gaga’s role is surprisingly limited. While she brings her formidable presence to the screen, her character takes a backseat to Fleck’s internal turmoil, often serving as a musical...

Harry Connick Jr. in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
Find Me Falling and the difficulties of writing a fictional hit record
Harry Connick Jr. in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
How difficult is it to write a convincing hit record for a film or TV show? Just take one look at the Harry Connick Jr rom-com Find Me Falling, streaming on Netflix…

There are all kinds of elements that, even in the best-written or best-directed films or TV shows, can pull the viewer out of the moment: it might be an off-key performance, an unconvincing prop or a special effect that doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. One thing that can be particularly difficult for filmmakers to get right, though, is to write a song that, in the movie or show’s fictional world at least, is a much-loved, multi-platinum hit.

This brings us to Find Me Falling, a romantic comedy by writer-director Stelana Kliris that appeared on Netflix on the 19th July. The premise is quite a good one: Harry Connick Jr plays John Allman, a creatively exhausted, middle-aged...

‘Joker 2’ Musical Details Revealed: At Least 15 Cover Songs, Original Tracks May Be Added (Exclusive)
Image
The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery.

Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. We do know, according to sources, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first “Joker” film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.

2024 Oscars Best Original Song nominees: 4 past champs, 1 veteran and 3 rookies
Image
The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).

This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). They are now set to battle “I’m...

Oscars: Billie Eilish, Diane Warren, Jon Batiste Earn Original Song Nominations
Image
In one of the tightest races for best original song at the 2024 Oscars, Billie Eilish, Jon Batiste, Diane Warren, “I’m Just Ken” and surprise contender “Wahzhazhe” from Killers of the Flower Moon have emerged as the nominees for the prestigious songwriting prize.

That means a number of top-notch acts who made the shortlist, including Lenny Kravitz, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Halle Bailey and more, didn’t make the cut.

Eilish, who wrote “What Was I Made For?” with her brother-producer Finneas, is the leading nominee with the Barbie track. The duo won best original song at the 2022 Academy Awards for “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name. The Greta Gerwig-directed box office hit appears again with Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken,” written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, the hitmakers who won best original song for “Shallow” from A Star is Born...

Will ‘Maestro’ finally get Bradley Cooper that elusive Golden Globe?
Image
In 2019, “A Star is Born” went into the Golden Globes as a heavy favorite to win multiple awards, including Best Drama Picture, Best Drama Actor for Bradley Cooper, and Best Drama Actress for Lady Gaga. However, come Golden Globes night, the film was snubbed in almost every category. “Bohemian Rhapsody” won both Best Drama and Best Drama Actor (for Rami Malek) while Glenn Close won Best Drama Actress for “The Wife.” The only Globe that “A Star is Born” managed to win was Best Original Song for “Shallow”.

Cooper starred in that movie as well as directed, produced, and co-wrote it (with Eric Roth and Will Fetters). He returns to the Globes arena this year with another movie he made as a multi-hyphenate: Netflix’s “Maestro.” This one is also a drama about music as it depicts the marriage between composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).

The music of ‘Maestro’ is the key to an Oscar win for Best Sound
Image
Bradley Cooper‘s “Maestro” features one of the best cinematic sequences this year as Cooper, transformed into Leonard Bernstein conducts a Mahler piece in the Ely Cathedral in Cambridge. The story of how this sequence came to be is almost as incredible as the scene itself and the power of Cooper’s performance is matched by the sheer beauty of the score.

This is the perfect example of why the sound in “Maesto” is so good — it helps to tell the story of the film and convey character more than almost any other sound in any other film does this year. Cooper has turned to music before for inspiration as his directing debut, “A Star is Born,” relied heavily on the power of music, too. He mines that power here again, too, in a film that tells the story of Bernstein’s marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). While the...

Oscar predictions: Best Original Song will be a battle of the power ballads
Image
Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.

“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

‘Maestro’ could score an Oscar win for Best Sound
Image
“Maestro” is Bradley Cooper‘s second film as a director and the actor-turned-filmmaker has again turned to music for the source of his drama. While his debut outing was a new version of “A Star is Born,” “Maestro” is a biopic chronicling the story of famed composer Leonard Bernstein‘s marriage to Felicia Montealegre.

Cooper directs, produces, co-writes with Josh Singer, and delivers a transformative performance as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Felicia. We predict that the film will do well at the Oscars with nominations for: Best Picture, Best Actor for Cooper, Best Actress for Mulligan, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Sound. It’s that Best Sound nomination that we’re focusing on here.

Our current predicted nominees in this category are “Oppenehimer,” “Maestro,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Color Purple,” and “Barbie.” “Oppenheimer” is predicted to win but “Maestro” could have an upper...

2024 Oscars battle for Best Original Song: ‘I’m Just Ken’ vs. ‘Peaches’
Image
One of the biggest surprises and most joyous moments of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was when Jack Black‘s villainous Bowser took to the piano and roared out the power ballad “Peaches.” The song was the funniest ballad we’d ever seen…. until “Barbie” came out.” That movie featured Ryan Gosling‘s Ken singing the tune “I’m Just Ken,” backed up by a bunch of other Kens including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.

It’s strange, curious, and fantastic that two films have been released this year that feature hilarious ballads as key moments in their films for their story’s villains. As such, we expect both songs to compete for Best Original Song this year purely for their sheer popularity. Our odds chart for this category isn’t yet up, however. For now, we’re just focusing on the chances of these two songs only.

Watch Lady Gaga Strip Down ‘Hold My Hand’ in an Intimate Oscars Performance Dedicated to Tony Scott

Lady Gaga appeared on the Academy Awards stage Sunday night to deliver a surprise performance of “Hold My Hand,” the Oscar-nominated song from “Top Gun: Maverick” — and the only thing more startling than that it happened at all, after earlier denials, was just how stripped-down, yet enormously effective, her reading of the song was.

Los Angeles, March 13 (Ians) Singer-actress Lady Gaga is expected to make a surprise appearance at the Oscars to perform “Hold My Hand”, the Oscar-nominated song from “Top Gun: Maverick”, according to several insiders who spoke to ‘Variety’ on condition of anonymity.

The decision seemed to be a last-minute back-and-forth effort as Gaga was initially reported to be skipping the awards show due to demands on filming “Joker: Folie A Deux”.

Oscars executive producer and showrunner Glenn Weiss first stated that Gaga would not be performing during a creative team press conference on March 8, reports Variety.

“We have a great relationship with Lady Gaga and her camp. She is in the middle of shooting a movie right now. Here, we are honouring the movie industry and what it takes to make a movie after a bunch of back and forth. It didn’t feel like she can get a performance to...

Oscars: Will Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ win Best Song for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ like ‘Take My Breath Away’ did for film’s predecessor? [Watch]
Image
Lady Gaga is back in the Oscar race for “Hold My Hand,” a power ballad featured on the year’s biggest blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.” In addition to performing the track, the versatile entertainer co-wrote it with Michael Tucker, professionally known as BloodPop. An Academy Award nomination for Best Song would mark Gaga’s fourth bid. She was nominated in this category in 2016 for “Til’ It Happens to You” with Diane Warren (“The Hunting Ground”). Three years later she won the statuette for her song “Shallow” from “A Star is Born,” sharing the prize with Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. The singer earned an additional Best Actress bid that year for her starring role opposite Bradley Cooper.

Bradley Cooper looks just like Leonard Bernstein in ‘Maestro’
Image
The orchestra is tuning up.

Netflix has released five images from the set of “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s forthcoming biopic of the late composer/conductor/educator/raconteur Leonard Bernstein, out in 2023. And even though no one’s heard even one note, the “bravo!”s are in, at least as the makeup and costuming is concerned.

The first of the three images show Bernstein as a younger man, with Carey Mulligan as Felicia Montealgre, a stage and television actress who married Bernstein in 1951. The second picture is probably shot on location at the Koussevitzky Music Shed at the Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. (The production did go up there for a time.)

The fourth and fifth pictures are the real stunners from a transformation perspective. Bernstein is shown “at work” (e.g. conducting and agonizing over his art) later in life. You’ll note there is a deep red jacket slung over a chair.

Lady Gaga and Tom Cruise Go Flying in the "Hold My Hand" Music Video
Image

New Lady Gaga music has arrived, but no, it's not a new album. On May 3, the multihyphenate released a new song, "Hold My Hand," which she wrote and recorded for the upcoming film "Top Gun: Maverick." Gaga shared the song's music video, which stars herself and "Top Gun" star Tom Cruise, on May 6.

Gaga first announced the track on social media on April 27, tweeting, "When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn't even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film's heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we've been living in. I've been working on it for years, perfecting it, trying to make it ours. I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other - a longing to be close when we...

Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ Lands Ahead of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Opening
Image
Lady Gaga has released “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick.” The song features in the film opening May 27, and already looks like it could catapult the star into the Oscar conversation.

Listen to the song here.

“Hold My Hand,” is a soaring rock tune with violins and guitar licks that harken back to the power ballads of the ’80s. The song, which plays over the end credits, has already stirred buzz as a possible best original song contender for Gaga following the film’s CinemaCon screening in Las Vegas. The song is produced by Gaga and BloodPop, with additional production by Benjamin Rice.

Leading up to the release, Gaga teased lyrics, “Hold my hand everything will be ok, I heard from the heavens that clouds have been grey.” She called the song a “love letter to the world.” In a longer Instagram post, Gaga shared, “I didn’t even...

‘House Of Gucci’ Largely Shut Out By Oscars Including Lady Gaga, But Make-Up Nomination Marks Gain In Representation

In another blow to mass-appealing movies at the Oscars, Academy voters decided to deplete MGM/Uar’s Ridley Scott-directed House of Gucci of all but one nomination, that being for Makeup and Hairstyling.

While adults have been sluggish to return to theaters during the pandemic, House of Gucci broke through, launching over Thanksgiving with a five-day domestic debut of $22M and grossing $53.5M stateside to date and $151.8M global. It has been by far the highest-grossing U.S. drama during the pandemic.

Diane Warren song for ‘The Life Ahead’ could finally win her Oscar after 11 losses
Image
Prolific composer Diane Warren has written nine number one songs and had 32 tunes hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Charts. She has won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year. She’s also be named ASCAP’s Writer of the Year three times and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 2001. But one honor that has eluded her is the Academy Award. Though she hasn’t reach Susan Lucci territory (she finally won an Emmy for “All My Children” on her 19th nomination) Warren has been a bridesmaid at the Oscars 11 times.

But she may well win this year for her wistful ballad “Io Si (Seen)” from the Italian-language Netflix drama “The Life Ahead,” which begins streaming Nov. 13. Laura Pausini, who recorded the song, co-wrote the Italian lyrics with Niccolo Agliardi.

The legendary 86-year-old Oscar-winner Sophia Loren...

Gone but not forgotten: Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Shallow’ makes history for Oscar winners on its way off the charts
After almost a year on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s duet “Shallow” has fallen off as of the chart dated August 24. But it leaves behind a historic legacy: it spent longer on the Hot 100 than any other Oscar winner for Best Original Song.

Overall, “Shallow” clocked 45 weeks on the Hot 100 since its debut last September in advance of the theatrical release of “A Star is Born,” the movie in which the song is featured. That went far beyond the previous record of 33 weeks set by Idina Menzel‘s “Frozen” anthem “Let it Go,” which peaked at number-five. Written by Gaga, Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson, “Shallow” reached the top-10 right after the film opened, and stuck around throughout the awards season as it won a Golden Globe, a Critics’ Choice Award, two Grammys and finally an Oscar.

Warner Bros. has set a one-week release of “A Star Is Born” with almost 12 minutes of additional footage, including extended musical performances, on 1,150 screens in North America.

‘Shallow’ at the Oscars: Cooper and Gaga ‘Meticulously’ Directed Their Performance
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga earned some of the biggest buzz at the Oscars for their powerhouse live performance of “Shallow,” and it turns out that both performers were the masterminds behind the epic moment. Rob Mills, ABC’s senior VP of alternative series, specials, and late-night programming, tells Variety that Cooper and Gaga began “meticulously” planning their Oscars performance the minute “Shallow” received its Best Original Song nomination on January 22.

“Bradley and Gaga, they really had this idea in their head of how they wanted it to be,” Mills said. “And the producers really worked step-by-step with them to make…what they were envisioning a reality. This was staying true to the spirit of the movie as well. They really wanted to kind of embody everything that the characters in the movie stood for in this three-minute number.”

The live performance of “Shallow” at the Oscars was captured in...

This Is the Exact Moment Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga Knew "Shallow" Would Be a Hit
Lady Gaga at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
Lady Gaga is officially halfway to earning an Egot, thanks to Sunday night's Oscars. The singer took home the gold for best original song during the ceremony, gaining recognition for her incredible work on "Shallow" alongside Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt. And that was just the tip of the iceberg for Gaga's sensational night: she also pulled off an incredible performance with Bradley Cooper and gave a truly inspirational speech when she took the stage to accept her award. The love, light, and delirious happiness continued when the group headed backstage. But perhaps the most striking moment of the press room interview was when Ronson described the moment they wrote the award-winning song in question.

Ronson told the press they'd had plenty of Jameson that day, and they were just puttering around and trying to figure out a new song. Gaga was on the piano, naturally, and she was trying out different chords,...

Bradley Cooper Gave Lady Gaga The Sweetest Advice Before Their Oscars Performance
Bradley Cooper
As the age-old saying goes: There could be 100 people in a room and 99 don't believe in you, but all it takes is just one... and that one is Bradley Cooper. His strong faith in Lady Gaga's abilities was obvious at the 2019 Oscars, especially during their intimate performance of "Shallow." But it turns out that the singer didn't have that same confidence in herself that he did. Luckily, her A Star Is Born co-star was by her side to give her the little push she needed.  After accepting the Oscar for Best Song, Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt went backstage to speak to the press all about the lovely experience, where Lady Gaga revealed the...

Watch Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper Sing “Shallow” At The Oscars
Lady Gaga at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
For the Oscars on Sunday, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper were together again for a much-touted rendition of eventual Original Song winner “Shallow” from Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born.

Along with Green Book‘s Best Picture win, the intimate duet was the most social moment of the night on Facebook and Twitter.

Except for a bling-y pendant necklace, Gaga was understated in a black princess gown and attacked the piano. Cooper was brave enough to start the song solo; he wasn’t pitch-perfect, but the emotion was right in tune. He pantomimed wiping his brow to the crowd when it was all over.

The song later won the Oscar, capping a night of performances that kicked off with Adam Lambert and Queen.

The A Star is Born soundtrack, which features collaborations with the likes of Lukas Nelson (Willie’s son), Jason Isbell and Mark Ronson, hit shelves the same...

Lady Gaga Rocks The Oscars Again, This Time With A Winning Outcome
Lady Gaga at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
It was sweet justice for Lady Gaga in the Original Song category as her track “Shallow” from Warner Bros.’ A Star Is Born took home the Oscar tonight.

Tonight Gaga (with Bradley Cooper) brought the Dolby crowd to their knees again, this time with a winning end-result.

“I worked hard for a long time, and it’s not about winning, but it’s about not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it,” Gaga said to those sitting on the couch at home watching. “It’s not how many times you stand up,...
