BioShock's Ending Explained (In Detail)
Image
BioShock is an iconic title for its haunting art deco aesthetic, its innovative blend of shooting and special powers in combat, and, of course, its infamous plot twist, with the ending of the game being one of the most memorable in video game history. The first BioShock features a story twist so well-crafted and impactful that it has almost completely overshadowed the actual ending of the game.

Unlike the time-warped and somewhat confusing ending of BioShock Infinite, the first title in the franchise ends on a surprisingly straightforward note. The twist comes a little before the final boss fight, and many players may not even remember the events following the reveal at the story's climax. It's worth looking back on that original game to reflect on its events and the ways that its ending punctuates the series' themes of exploitation and false agency. They will likely be important in the new game to come.

7 Biggest Video Game Adaptation Mistakes The BioShock Movie Must Avoid
Image
The BioShock movie must not ignore the game's classical music tone, as it plays a crucial role in creating the unique atmosphere of Rapture. The movie should not simply rehash the game's story, but instead explore new events and adapt iconic characters in a way that stays true to the franchise's lore. Rapture's core concept as an underwater utopia that turns into a divided society should not be forgotten in the movie, as it is essential to understanding the game's themes and message.

The BioShock movie currently in the works by Netflix will adapt an iconic video game franchise into a feature-length film, but there are some crucial mistakes it must avoid. Video game adaptations have had an inconsistent past and BioShock will be a real challenge to get right. Despite its gameplay having plenty of action, BioShock is full of complexities and can't simply be adapted into an action movie.

Netflix’s BioShock Movie Needs To Replicate 1 Key Aspect Of HBO’s The Last Of Us To Succeed
Image
The BioShock movie should replicate HBO's The Last of Us in order to succeed as a video game adaptation, staying faithful to the source material while making a few tweaks that enhance the story and world-building. The Last of Us season 1 leveraged television's unique strengths by taking its time to unfold and expanding upon characters' backstories and roles, which benefited the series and added to the franchise's world-building. The BioShock movie should adopt a character-driven approach like The Last of Us, exploring tangential stories and pre-collapse Rapture to add depth to the world-building and flesh out the movie's characters.

Netflix’s upcoming BioShock movie needs to replicate a key aspect of HBO’s much-loved The Last of Us season 1 in order to succeed as a video game adaptation. Based on 2K Boston's 2007 first-person-shooter-meets-rpg of the same name, the BioShock movie is set to take viewers to the underwater, 1940s-built city...

Crucial BioShock Movie Decision Is Just What Game Fans Needed To Hear
Image
The BioShock movie will be faithful to the game's canon, providing relief to fans who are excited about seeing Rapture in live-action. While the movie will stay true to the source material, there will be "little twists" that surprise fans, a strategy that successful video game adaptations have utilized. Game accuracy is crucial to the movie's success, as BioShock's well-plotted story and unique elements already provide a strong foundation for a film adaptation.

Recent reports have confirmed a crucial BioShock movie decision — one that's actually just what the video game's fans have needed to hear to inspire faith in the long-awaited adaptation. Published by 2K and helmed by creative lead Ken Levine, 2007's BioShock is set in an alternate version of 1960. Jack, the player-controlled character, stumbles upon the now-defunct underwater city of Rapture, which was established by American business magnate Andrew Ryan as a refuge for society's elite. Completely isolated,...

Six Other Horror Video Games That Deserve the HBO Treatment
Image
2013’s The Last of Us managed to connect even with gamers who don’t usually play horror titles, so it makes sense that HBO selected the massively popular IP to be their first high-profile video game adaptation.

Of course, genre fans know that Survival Horror games have always boasted engrossing plots and characters, with their slower pace and epistolary storytelling tactics making them uniquely suited for complex narratives. And with so many memorable horror campaigns just begging for big-budget adaptations, we’ve decided to come up with a list of six horror games that also deserve the HBO treatment that The Last of Us is getting.

While this list is based on personal opinion, we’ll be focusing on titles more suited for longform storytelling without necessarily breaking the bank when it comes to special effects. We also won’t be including games that already have adaptations on the way,...

“Bioshock” The Movie on Netflix
After years of development, “BioShock”, the 2007 first-person shooter video game is being developed as a new live-action movie for streaming on Netflix:

“…incorporating ideas by 20th century dystopian and utopian thinkers Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley, as well as historical figures John D. Rockefeller and Walt Disney, the game sees the player guide ‘Jack’, after his airplane crashes in the ocean near the ‘bathysphere terminus’ that leads to the underwater city of ‘Rapture’.

“Built by the business magnate ‘Andrew Ryan’, the city was intended to be an isolated utopia, but the discovery of ‘Adam’, a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers, initiated the city's turbulent decline.

“Jack tries to find a way to escape, fighting through hordes of Adam-obsessed enemies, and the iconic, deadly ‘Big Daddies’, while engaging with the few sane humans that remain and eventually learning of Rapture's past.

‘BioShock’ Film Adaptation in the Works at Netflix
Image
“Would you kindly watch Netflix’s ‘BioShock’ movie?”

The streamer is teaming up with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to adapt the popular video game series as a film, details of which were announced Tuesday. Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two will produce the movie, which does not have a director or talent attached as of yet.

Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the “BioShock” series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told — all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharp shooting, clever planning and lethal improvisation.

The first “BioShock” released in 2007 to widespread critical acclaim. Gamers played as Jack, the lone survivor of a plane crash over the Atlantic Ocean in the 1960s. He discovers an underwater dystopia called Rapture, which was created by an eccentric business magnate Andrew Ryan. Rapture had seen better days, and Jack...

The Internet’s Freaking Out Over Kirsten Dunst Returning For Spider-Man 3
Incredibly, this year Kirsten Dunst is celebrating the 30th anniversary of her first feature film credit. One of the most recognizable child stars of her generation, Dunst landed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the age of just 12 for Interview with the Vampire before going on to feature in box office hits Little Women, Jumanji and Small Soliders, while she also provided the voice of a young Anastasia in Disney’s animation of the same name.

It was Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides in 1999 that marked a transition into more adult roles, but no matter what the 38 year-old goes on to accomplish throughout the rest of her career, to a lot of people she’ll always be best known as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. She’s actively avoided big budget studio blockbusters ever since, but she’ll be returning in a...

The 5 Most Effective Plot Twists in Video Games
Continuing my look at storytelling in gaming, I’m taking a look at what I feel are the best plot twists in games and why I think they work so well.

One of the biggest storytelling devices in any medium is the “plot twist” where the script gets flipped and everything you thought you knew is turned on its head. Video games are no different. While there are plenty of plot twists that don’t work, or leave you rolling your eyes, some manage to stick with you years later and keep you talking.

There are so many to choose from in this list, so inevitably I’ll end up leaving some off other would have included. Regardless, though, I feel the ones listed below (in no particular order) are the most memorable.

Bioshock

There's no way you can do a list of plot twists without mentioning one of the...

‘Lemon Tree Passage’ (2014) review
Reviewed by Jesse Miller

MoreHorror.com

Lemon Tree Passage is an Australian Horror-Thriller that is set around the local ghost story that goes like this: A tormented biker that was struck and killed in a hit and run now apparently haunts the backroads of a small Australian town.

Three American Backpackers, Maya (Jessica Tovey), Amelia (Pippa Black) and Sam (Nicholas Gunn), meet a couple of Aussie larrikins, Geordie (Tim Phillips) and Oscar (Andrew Ryan), that recite the spooky urban legend to the trio and off they all go to test the theory. Unsurprisingly, horror ensues.

Lemon Tree Passage starts off strong. There’s a few good scares, the cast are all particularly strong and the atmosphere is quite effective, due to some superb cinematography.

The problem comes later as the story progresses. The plot developments come off feeling more than a little silly and contrived, dispensing of the great atmosphere...

Nine spends big on local content
The Nine Network is channelling tens of millions of dollars freed up from the end of its output deal with Warner Bros. into a record investment in local content.

Spending on local production will continue to rise over the next three years to the point where the network invests $100 million more per year than currently, executives said at the upfronts presentation today.

While Nine retains the first-run rights to The Big Bang Theory, director of programming and production Andrew Backwell said the broadcaster decided to relinquish the re-runs (subsequently acquired by Seven) because it preferred to spend the money on local content.

The 2016 line-up includes the Matchbox Pictures drama Hide & Seek, Cjz.s previously announced two-part Alan Bond miniseries House of Bond and a new factual series, Prison: First & Last 24 Hours.

Daryl Somers will return to TV as the host of You.re Back in the Room, a FremantleMedia Australia...
