Julia Max Was Told to Cut Down the Family Drama in ‘The Surrender.’ She Ignored the Notes and Created a Ferocious Horror Debut
Image
Julia Max’s feature debut “The Surrender” goes to some surreal and troubling places. But the core of the film begins with something both horrible and commonplace that often isn’t portrayed on the big screen: Caretaking for a dying relative.

“The Surrender,” now streaming on Shudder, is the story of Megan (Colby Minifie) and her mother Barbara (Kate Burton) as they’re caring for their family’s patriarch during his final hours. After he passes, Barbara hopes to resurrect her husband through a ritual that will open them up to immense darkness.

Max knew that before any supernatural stuff took place, there needed to be enough characterization within the family to ground them once the unthinkable started happening. Unfortunately, that vision was met with early resistance.

“A lot of producers initially thought the mother-daughter stuff needed to be condensed to get to the scarier stuff much earlier,” Max says.

Interview: The Surrender Director Julia Max Wrestles with Death’s Demons
Image
The Surrender is a mother-daughter story with resurrection, lost souls, and severed body parts. Julia Max’s intimate horror film is also about familial bond and conflict in the face of loss—the terror of saying goodbye. “Really, this should have come out on Mother’s Day,” Max half-jokes. “Let’s be honest. We’re close enough.”

The well-received Shudder pic is a personal horror story from Max, who previously directed the hit horror short, Pieces of Me. She was inspired to write her feature directorial debut after experiencing the loss of her stepfather. She explores the past through Megan (Colby Minifie) and Barbara (Kate Burton), as they debate resurrecting the deceased.

Recently, Max spoke with Daily Dead about the origin of The Surrender and the catharsis of horror.

How did your experience with a real death doula inspire you?

Bloody Disgusting’s Top 15 Best Horror Movies of 2024
Image
It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.

That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

This is reflected in the way that 2024 horror found new angles to push franchises forward through prequels and sequels,...

Anna Kendrick Donated All of Her ‘Woman of the Hour’ Pay to Anti-Violence Charities
Image
Anna Kendrick may have made her directorial debut with Woman of the Hour but she made no profit from it after deciding to donate all of her pay to Rainn (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and the National Center for Victims of Violent Crime.

While appearing on the Crime Junkie Af podcast to chat about the Netflix film, Kendrick reflected on making the decision for her donation.

“This was never a money-making venture for me. All the resources went to actually just making the movie,” Kendrick told host Ashley Flowers.

She said that things took a turn ahead of taking the film to the Toronto International Film Festival where she realized money would become involved in conversations about the film: “I went from being like, ‘Let me know when the movie happens,’ to being like, ‘Oh god I am responsible for this,’ and then it was making the movie — we...

Anna Kendrick Reveals She Donated Woman of the Hour Pay to Victims of Crime
Image
Anna Kendrick says she felt "gross" profiting from her new Netflix crime thriller Woman of the Hour, so she donated her pay to survivors of sexual abuse. Kendrick stars in and directs the true crime thriller based on the harrowing story of serial killer Rodney Alcala. In 1978, Alcala appeared on an episode of The Dating Game, where, sight unseen, he won a date with a woman named Cheryl Bradshaw. Despite picking Alcala as her potential suitor, Bradshaw's instincts deterred her from ever going through with a date. At the time, Alcala had committed several murders and was a registered sex offender.

During an appearance on the Crime Junkie Af podcast, Kendrick described why she ultimately decided to donate her salary from the film:

"It wasn't until the week before TIFF [Toronto International Film Festival] that I thought 'Oh, the movie is going to make money. I went from being like, 'Let me know when the movie happens,...

Anna Kendrick Donated ‘Woman of the Hour’ Pay To Sexual Violence Survivors
Image
After making her directorial debut Woman of the Hour, Anna Kendrick is donating her earnings to survivors of sexual abuse.

While opening up about the Netflix true-crime thriller, the Oscar nominee explained why she felt “gross” being paid for a film about ‘The Dating Game Killer’ Rodney Alcala‘s victims and survivors.

“Believe me, this was never a money-making venture for me, because all the resources went to actually making the movie,” she explained on the Crime Junkie Af podcast.

In addition to directing, Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles who finds herself courted by a serial killer (Daniel Zovatto) in the midst of a years-long killing spree, when they cross paths as contestants on popular game show The Dating Game.

“It wasn’t until the week before TIFF that I thought ‘Oh, the movie is going to make money,'” she added. “I went from being like,...

How ‘Woman of the Hour’ Production Designer Remade ‘The Dating Game’ Set to Telegraph the Presence of a Serial Killer
"Dating Game, The" Paul Lynde C. 1967
Approximately one-third of the Netflix true crime thriller “Woman of the Hour” takes place on set of “The Dating Game,” where real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala was a contestant in the 1970s. So, the production designer for the Anna Kendrick-directed film had two missions: to accurately recreate the well-known set and to make that colorful, cheery space highlight the irony of a murderer’s participation on a romantic game show.

“Woman of the Hour,” written by Ian McDonald, is structured to jump back and forth in time to dates where Alcala committed his heinous killings, while “The Dating Game” show anchors the action. Kendrick also stars in the film, portraying Cheryl Bradshaw (Sheryl for the movie), the unwitting bachelorette on the 1978 episode.

One of the first questions production designer Brent Thomas asked himself was, “How do we help the audience experience what Sheryl is going through on the set?...

How Anna Kendrick’s ‘Woman of the Hour’ Finally Made It to Netflix After “Grueling” Writing Process
Image
Woman of the Hour found a savior in Anna Kendrick, just when it needed one the most.

The true-crime thriller is now streaming on Netflix and marks the feature directorial debut for Kendrick, who also stars. The film is based on the story of real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) and his reputation as the “Dating Game Killer,” as the narrative involves his appearance on a 1978 episode of The Dating Game with bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. (The name of the lead female character, played by Kendrick, is “Sheryl” for the film.)

During his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Ian McDonald explains why he felt compelled to change dialogue from the game show, his failed efforts to connect with the movie’s subject and why he hopes the streaming film will be “received as art, not content.”

How ‘Woman of the Hour’ Decided Which Rodney Alcala Murders to Depict on Screen and the Level of Violence They Should Show
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains mild spoilers for “Woman of the Hour,” now streaming on Netflix.

“Woman of the Hour” screenwriter Ian McDonald faced a unique challenge with his sophomore feature: Tell a true crime story that felt “necessary and useful.” Luckily, the stranger-than-fiction story of Rodney Alcala, who won “The Dating Game” during a 1978 appearance amid a serial killing spree, was ripe for examination.

“There’s a lot out there where a serial killer attacks a bunch of women, and there’s absolutely no reason to tell it,” McDonald says. “There was something about this that felt like it could be socially and culturally relevant now. You’ll sometimes hear people say, ‘Rodney’s kind of like Ted Bundy,’ by which I think they mean he’s handsome and well-educated. But he was actually very different: He was a chameleon. He was good at pretending he was something he wasn’t.

‘Woman of the Hour’ Writer Explains “Obligation” To Approach True Crime Genre With “Empathy”
Image
Although Woman of the Hour takes some creative liberties, the true crime film’s writer aimed to capture the “emotional reality” of Rodney Alcala‘s murders.

Following a Saturday screening of the Netflix film hosted by Writers Guild of America, screenwriter Ian McDonald told me in a Q&a that he felt “an obligation” to Alcala’s victims and survivors as the true crime genre becomes increasingly ripe with spectacle and sensationalism.

“I mean, it’s tricky because on one hand, it should just be a basic tenet of writing any sort of thriller,” he explained. “If you wanna feel scared for someone, you kind of have to know who they are and you have to know where they’re from and where they’re going and what they care about, and the more you can get to know them as a person, the more you’re gonna feel their...

Anna Kendrick at an event for In the Air (2009)
Woman of the Hour (2024) Movie Review: A Taut Thriller that Serves as an Examination of Sexism and Misogyny in the 1970s
Anna Kendrick at an event for In the Air (2009)
A debut directorial feature is an exciting prospect from the audience’s perspective. It allows them to experience a new voice in the filmmaking sphere and, consequently, a fresh bout of energy in the filmmaking itself. To expect that voice to exhibit an encompassing uniqueness from its inception would be too much, but a confluence of different inspirations rising through as an expression of ideas can be fascinating.

Such is the case with Anna Kendrick. As much as it is a film squarely set in the 1970s, an adaptation of a true-crime event about serial killer Rodney Alcala, who would appear on a 1978 taping of the game show “The Dating Game,” it is also very much an examination of systemic misogyny and its intersection with violence through a 21st-century lens.

The above line might suggest the film’s flaw is the failure of faithful reconstruction of that era, but that is hardly the case.

Foreigner’s Lou Gramm, Rick Wills, Al Greenwood Reunite for Rock Hall of Fame

Foreigner scored more hits than just about any other rock band from their era. But they were never a favorite of critics, and they had to wait 22 years to enter the Hall of Fame after they first reached their period of eligibility. Original frontman Lou Gramm feels the massive success of their 1984 ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is” played a big role in shaping their reputation.

Anna Kendrick Breaks Down How the ‘Most Ambivalent Pitch in Hollywood History’ Led to Her Directorial Debut
Image
It’s been a long journey to get “Woman of the Hour” to the screen, and an even weirder one to get Anna Kendrick to both star in and direct it. According to the actress, that last piece was borne out of the “most ambivalent pitch in Hollywood history.”

Written by Ian McDonald, “Woman of the Hour” tells the weirdly true story of Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who ended up competing — and winning — on “The Dating Game.” He did so right in the middle of his multi-year murder spree. The film ended up on The Black List in 2017 and was purchased by Netflix in 2021.

In 2022, the film went on the market at the Cannes Film Festival, with Netflix no longer attached. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Kendrick was attached to direct, after already being set to star in and produce it. Now, two years later, it’s finally streaming,...

‘Woman of the Hour’ Review: Anna Kendrick Directs a Thriller About the ’70s Serial Killer Who Was a Contestant on ‘The Dating Game’
Image
It’s a notorious freak moment in daytime television. On Sept. 13, 1978, one of the three competing bachelors on “The Dating Game” was Rodney Alcala, who turned out to be a serial killer; he was captured the following year. It’s no joke — or maybe it’s a meaningful one — to say that Alcala had the looks and personality of a 1970s ladykiller. He was coiffed like one of the Hudson Brothers, with a chiseled grin redolent of Engelbert Humperdinck. He practically beamed good vibes — along with some semi-submerged bad ones, answering his “Dating Game” questions in a way that was so confident it was…aggressive.

TV, of course, never got much kitschier than “The Dating Game.” I used to watch it as a kid, marveling at the fact that the entire show, with its Herb Albert-on-happy-pills theme music and its flower-power décor, was a kind of leering, smirky put-on that...

Woman of the Hour (2024) Movie Ending & True Story Explained: What Happened after Cheryl’s Chilling Encounter with Rodney?
Anna Kendrick at an event for In the Air (2009)
Directed by Anna Kendrick, “Woman of the Hour” on Netflix is the most recent example of a Black List script coming to the screen. Written by Ian McDonald, the screenplay revolves around Cheryl Bradshaw, a once-aspiring actress, who decided to take part in The Dating Game, a reality TV show from the 1970s where the female contestants are supposed to find their suitor based on the available options. One of those contestants was Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who tricks her and everyone on set with his charm. Those who were born after this period may have seen this show being spoofed on SNL sketches. “Woman of the Hour” presents a terrifying account of this woman to unravel the dual nature of its serial killer.

Anna Kendricks Unsettling New Movie Revitalizes the True Crime Genre
Image
This following discusses violence and assault, both real and fictional. Please proceed with caution.

People love a true crime story. Whether it's through a movie, a miniseries or a podcast, people want to understand the mind of a criminal. How could someone senselessly hurt another person without a care in the world, then casually move on to another victim? What is it about a person's upbringing that turns them into a monster? These are both justified questions, but what about the mind of a victim? How does a victim walk into the hands of a criminal, and how did some of them walk away alive? This is what Anna Kendrick aims to answer in her directorial debut film, Netflix's Woman of the Hour, based on the real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala.

In Woman of the Hour, Kendrick and screenwriter Ian McDonald reframe the traditional true crime narrative for the better.

How ‘Woman of the Hour’ Screenwriter Ian McDonald Turned a Horrifying Serial Killer Story Into a Modern Tale of Toxic Masculinity
Image
[Editor’s note: The following interview contains light spoilers for “Woman of the Hour.”]

When serial killer Rodney Alcala appeared on the hit game show “The Dating Game” in 1978, he was billed as one of three eligible bachelors competing for the affection of struggling actress Cheryl Bradshaw. Alcala ultimately won a date with Bradshaw, but the wily young woman refused to go out with him, mostly because she found him to be “creepy.”

She was right to feel that way: By the time of his appearance on the game show, Alcala had already killed at least five women, been listed as one of the FBI’s most wanted, and skipped his way around the country to avoid a variety of criminal investigations. “Creepy“? That was only the tip of the iceberg.

Such is the wild, horrifying true story at the heart of Anna Kendrick’s feature directorial debut (in which she also stars as Cheryl), “Woman of the Hour.” For screenwriter Ian McDonald,...

Real-Life Sheryl Bradshaw In Woman Of The Hour: Why Didn’t She Go On A Date With Rodney Alcala?
Image
A matchmaking television show that hooks you up with a blind date may not sound like the ideal place to meet your serial killer, but it is kind of ironic. I mean, you don’t get to see a man’s true face in real life either, so one really knows what goes on behind that charming smile, right? The character of Sheryl, played by debut director Anna Kendrick herself, is based on the real-life person Cheryl Bradshaw. I am not sure why the writer or the director thought of changing the first letter of her name, but maybe they did it to give the character a distinctive touch. Touche. Coming back to our real-life person, Cheryl was a drama teacher from Phoenix, Arizona, who had come to LA to fulfill her dream to be an actor. But even though Cheryl didn’t become a popular movie star, she did...

The Terrifying True Story Of Netflix's Crime Thriller Woman Of The Hour
Image
Content warning: This article discusses themes and subject matter that some readers may find triggering, including sexual assault.

Anna Kendrick is set to make her directorial debut with the Netflix original film "Woman of the Hour" — and it's based on a seriously scary true-crime story.

In case you weren't aware of the story behind "Woman of the Hour," Kendrick and her screenwriter Ian McDonald were inspired by Rodney Alcala, a sexual predator and serial killer who murdered multiple women in California in the late 1970s. In case you didn't find Alcala's crimes disturbing enough yet, he was also in possession of thousands of explicit photographs that included underage subjects, one of which ended up reopening a cold case from 1977 years later in 2016.

Okay, wait — what does this have to do with Kendrick? Well, the Oscar-nominated actress will star in and direct "Woman of the Hour," which retells the real-life story...

Anna Kendrick Learns People Are Incorrectly Googling The New Netflix Movie She Directed: "Like A Smear Campaign"
Image
Anna Kendrick learns that people are incorrectly googling the new Netflix movie she directed, Woman of the Hour. Woman of the Hour Review: Anna Kendrick makes a strong directorial debut
Image
Plot: The true story of an actress (Anna Kendrick) who, in the seventies, went on The Dating Game and was matched with Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), who was later revealed to be a serial killer that may have murdered up to 130 women.

Woman of the Hour was originally reviewed at TIFF 2023

Review: The story behind Woman of the Hour is pretty wild, even as far as true crime goes. While the movie takes several significant liberties with her story, a young actress named Cheryl Bradshaw really did go on The Dating Game in 1978 and chose serial killer Rodney Alcala as her match. While the premise is thin, as there wasn’t much to Bradshaw’s interactions with Alcala beyond the show, Anna Kendrick, who makes her directorial debut from a Black List script by Ian MacAllister McDonald, has put together a chilling film.

Much of the film enters around Alcala’s murder spree,...

Anna Kendrick Recalls “Actively Shoving Down” Urge To Make Directorial Debut ‘Woman Of The Hour’ & Drawing From “Absurd” Hollywood Experience
Image
More than 20 years after making her screen debut in Camp, a beloved romp about the universal experience of being a theater kid, Anna Kendrick is unpacking the sexism of Hollywood through the true-crime genre with her directorial debut.

While discussing her new movie Woman of the Hour, premiering Friday on Netflix, the Oscar nominee tells Deadline that although she was “actively shoving down” the urge to direct writer Ian McDonald’s Black List script, Kendrick was so drawn to the “heartbreak” in his depiction of “Dating Game Killer” Rodney Alcala‘s victims, she got “really sick at the idea” of anyone else helming the film.

Woman Of The Hour Stars Gush Over Anna Kendrick's Directorial Vision
Image
This article contains mentions of murder and sexual assault.

Woman of the Hour is a true crime thriller, but its approach to the material is rather unique. The movie, which begins streaming October 18 on Netflix, follows aspiring actress Cheryl Bradshaw as she negotiates attempts at stardom in 1970s Los Angeles before landing a guest spot on The Dating Game, where she is thrown into the path of one Rodney Alcala. Known as the "Dating Game Killer" in real, Alcala was eventually convicted on 5 counts of murder and 2 counts of rape, all part of a violent (and allegedly much deadlier) crime spree that took place even as he flirted with Cheryl on national TV.

Anna Kendrick pulls double duty, not only playing Cheryl but also directing Woman of the Hour. The crime thriller, written by Ian Mcdonald, dovetails her innocent search for fame with Alcala's (played by David Zovetto of Station Eleven...

Woman of the Hour, which begins streaming October 18 on Netflix, is based on the strange yet true story of serial killer and rapist Rodney Alcala. Known as the "Dating Game Killer" because of his 1978 appearance on a popular game show amid his violent and terrifying crime spree, Alcala was eventually caught and given the death sentence but the movie focuses on one of his potential victims rather than on the perpetrator. Anna Kendrick stars as aspiring actress Cheryl Bradshaw, who meets Alcala on national television as a contestant on The Dating Game.

Kendrick also directs Woman of the Hour from a screenplay by Ian McDonald, making her feature film directorial debut a rather ambitious undertaking. the most improbable true stories I've ever heard. Anna Kendrick on How She Pitched Herself as a Director for ‘Woman of the Hour’
Image
Anna Kendrick is sharing how she pitched herself to take on the role of director in the new Netflix film Woman of the Hour.

The crime thriller, directed by Kendrick and written by Ian McDonald, is based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala, portrayed by Daniel Zocatto, who appeared and won an episode of The Dating Game. Alcala was eventually dubbed The Dating Game Killer.

Kendrick, initially attached in just an acting capacity, found herself pitching herself to take the director’s chair, but she said she only wanted the role if producers thought it was the best move. “I genuinely felt so strongly about the film that I just wanted to do whatever was best for the movie, and if that meant somebody else, being in the director’s chair, I was fine with that,” Kendrick, who also played The Dating Game contestant Cheryl Bradshaw in the film,...

Woman of the Hour Review — Anna Kendrick’s Directorial Debut is a Riveting and Timely Crime Thriller That Captivates!
Image
The opening sequence of the new Netflix film Woman of the Hour contains one of the most terrifying and shocking scenes in crime thriller history. A young woman, Sarah (played by Pitch Perfect’s Kelley Jakle), unburdens her ruminating regrets to a new friend and is subsequently attacked.

However, the perpetrator gives his victim life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation, only to attack her again.

On that note, let’s get right to the point: Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut is a thoroughly gripping and relevant crime thriller transcending the #MeToo film movement in powerful ways. Woman of the Hour explores themes that extend well beyond what hides in the shadows or, for that matter, in plain sight.

‘Woman of the Hour’ Official Trailer – Anna Kendrick Brings a Shocking True Story to Netflix
Anna Kendrick at an event for In the Air (2009)
The Anna Kendrick-directed thriller Woman of the Hour is headed to Netflix here in the United States on October 18, and the full official trailer has arrived this morning.

In 1978, a serial killer appeared on live TV as a bachelor on The Dating Game. Director (and star) Anna Kendrick tells the tale in Woman of the Hour. Watch the new trailer below.

Meagan Navarro explains in her four-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Anna Kendrick takes aim at the true crime serial killer story in her feature directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. A charming, kitschy ’70s set exploration of gender dynamics quickly gives way to an unnerving, suspenseful stranger-than-fiction tale of serial killer and rapist Rodney Alcala and his bizarre appearance as a bachelor on “The Dating Game.” Kendrick’s incisive vision, blending horror and humor with nonlinear storytelling, makes for an unshakable debut.

“Kendrick pulls double duty for her debut,...
