Arthur Kopit Dies: Pulitizer-Nominated ‘Indians’, ‘Nine’ Playwright Was 83

Arthur Kopit, whose 1969 Broadway play Indians was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and later adapted as the film Buffalo Bill and the Indians starring Paul Newman, died Friday in New York. He was 83.

His death was announced by spokesman Rick Miramontez. No cause of death was disclosed.

Kopit’s seven-decade stage career began when he was still a Harvard undergraduate, with his 1963 play Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad getting an Off Broadway production that later moved to Broadway with Jerome Robbins directing.

Indians, about the life of Buffalo Bill Cody and an early example of the era’s anti-Western genre, opened on Broadway in 1969 and starred Stacy Keach, Manu Tupou, Raul Julia and Sam Waterston, among others. This week, multiple sources confirmed to People what Twitter has known for months: Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor are a couple, and they're one of the cutest around.

The confirmation followed Taylor's visit to the Wnyc podcast Death, Sex & Money, where she gushed about her relationship. "It's the most wonderful, extraordinary thing that could have ever possibly happened in my life," the actress said.

Public displays of admiration and affection are nothing new for the Twitter-loving couple, who have taken to adorably expressing their love on the platform, making it obvious that they've reached bae status.

McC Theater Announces Fall 2009 PlayLab Line-Up, Starting 10/26
McC Theater has announced the line-up for their Fall 2009 PlayLab play readings of new plays by members of the company's Playwrights' Coalition Anton Dudley, Matthew Stephen Smith and Kara Manning to be held on October 26, November 2 and November 9. The three-week Monday night series will offer a special opportunity to experience works in development by some of New York's most exciting playwrights. As an added bonus, audience members will be invited to mingle with the artists at post-performance receptions to be held each night.
