Denis studied Communications in Dublin in the 1980s before emigrating to the US to work as a video editor, writer, and producer/director in various production and television companies. Returning to Ireland, Murphy produced and directed television commercials and corporate video projects, and edited the Filmbase short "Right Now Ladies and Gents" for director and writer John Paul Murphy in 2004.
While continuing to work as a freelance producer, Denis earned a MA in Film and Television Studies at Dublin City University in 2010. At DCU, he co-produced and co-directed "The Bookbinder's Daughter", a short documentary film nominated for an award at the Fastnet Short Film Festival (2011). The film was also selected for the Galway Film Fleadh (2011), Eat My Shorts (2012), Feminist Film Festival (2014) and Light House Shorts (20014).
Denis earned a PhD in 2017 and now works in the University sector as a film and media researcher and lecturer.
