Margo Martindale Reads ‘Dead Letters’ in First Image From New Drama
Image
Emmy winning actress, Margo Martindale, is officially stepping into her next drama-heavy role thanks to the first look at Dead Letters. The title marks the feature-length directorial debut of David Drake, who also penned the screenplay inspired by his childhood as the son of a truck driver. The film, which has just wrapped production, will follow Martindale’s character — a long-haul truck driver — whose traumatic past comes back to haunt her. After years of trying to find peace following the tragic murder of her daughter, the woman comes to find that the killer is seeking parole and that there’s a good chance they’ll be let out onto the streets again.

In the debut image, which you can see below, Martindale fully embraces her character. Wearing a heavy tan jacket with a toothbrush in hand, she leans up against her red big rig truck, with its company and location...

Prime Video's Latest Crime Comedy Series 'The Sticky' Canceled After One Season
Image
Prime Video has decided to cancel The Sticky, a heist comedy series that premiered on the streaming platform back in December with six episodes. The reason behind this decision hasn’t officially been stated, but per Deadline, it is likely due to a kind of viewership that wasn’t strong enough to warrant a renewal. This cancelation is surprising, considering The Sticky has an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and received good reviews from both critics and audiences.

The series follows the story of Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer in Canada, who teams up with a mobster and a security guard to exact revenge on the authorities who threaten to take away her land. The official synopsis reads:

“The Sticky follows Ruth Landry, a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster,...

Jamie Lee Curtis' Crime Comedy Series Gets Canceled 2 Months After Streaming Debut
Image
Prime Video is pulling the plug on The Sticky, a heist comedy series inspired by true events. The news comes less than three months after the six-episode show's streaming premiere on Prime Video in December.

Per Deadline,The Sticky has officially been canceled after one season. The decision is likely due to the show failing to draw the high levels of viewership that the streaming platform had been hoping for. Its reception was fairly strong, as it has a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. There was no mention in the report of the show getting shopped elsewhere for a potential continuation, making it seem more likely than not that this is the end of the line for The Sticky.

The Sticky Cancelled at Prime Video After One Season
Image
The Sticky has received some not-so-sweet news: Prime Video has cancelled the dark comedy series after just one season, TVLine has confirmed.

According to our sister site Deadline, which broke the news, The Sticky did not bring in enough of an audience in the weeks since its six-episode first — and now only — season released on Dec. 6, 2024.

‘The Sticky’ Heist Comedy Canceled By Prime Video After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew The Sticky for a second season. The news comes more than two months after the six-episode first season of the Canadian comedy, starring Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos and Guillaume Cyr and guest starring Jamie Lee Curts, was released on Dec. 6.

Like another recently canceled Prime Video freshman comedy series, The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, The Sticky could not break through and draw wide enough audience despite solid reviews (80% on Rotten Tomatoes). Comedies take longer than dramas to, um, stick, which could explain why streamers are doing fewer half-hour shows and why those shows have a generally higher cancellation rate after a single season.

The Sticky, produced by Blumhouse Television, Curtis’ Comet Pictures, Jonathan Levine’s Megamix and Sphere Media, was inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec’s national reserves.

The Sticky Review: The Prime Video Comedy Makes Crime Look Easy
Image
The following contains major spoilers for The Sticky, now streaming on Prime Video.

TV and movie heists generally evoke an image of black-clad people entering a bank vault with a suspenseful soundtrack playing in the background. Who would have thought maple syrup would be the target of one of them? In the early 2010s, a maple syrup heist rocked Canada. Prime Video is now bringing that colorful part of the nation's history to life with The Sticky, a delicious crime drama.

Created by Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, The Sticky puts its own spin on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, starring Doctor Odyssey's Margo Martindale as Ruth Landry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Mike Byrne, and Guillaume Cyr as Remy Bouchard. The show follows Ruth as she hatches a plan with known mob associate Mike and security guard Remy to steal millions of dollars’ worth of maple syrup after the...

The Sticky (Season 1) ‘Prime Video’: Review, Recap, and Ending Explained – What Secrets Does Martin Hide, and How Will Bo’s Return Shape the Future?
Margo Martindale in The Sticky (2024)
Here is a factual statement for dear readers: Twelve years ago, Canada saw its biggest heist, the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.” If the name brought a hint of amusement to you, along with the usual apprehension one gets from seedy crimes like robberies, then Amazon Prime’s “The Sticky” (season 1) would be the perfect choice for you. The “Fargo”-coded dark comedy, featuring a motley crew of characters portrayed by an equally diverse cast, is maddeningly hilarious and delightfully entertaining. With half-an-hour-a-piece six episodes, the season zooms through its cold crime-drama premise with oddly fitting circumstantial humor and zany dialogues. All signs of a great dark comedy.

Prime Video Hit 'The Sticky' Nearly Starred Dan Aykroyd a Lead Role
Image
The Sticky, the six-episode Prime Video series starring Margo Martindale, is streaming now, loosely based on the true story of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. A story that's almost too wild to believe, the heist occurred from 2011 through 2012, where C$18.1 million (Usd 12.7 million) was stolen from a storage facility in Quebec. Chris Diamantopoulos, known for his work in Silicon Valley, Mrs. Davis, The Boys in the Boat, and many, many more projects, recently spoke to MovieWeb and discussed his role in the series and the actor who was initially eyed for his part as Mike Byrne.

As it turns out, Diamantopoulos wasn't initially drawn to the project, and it took a few changes before the actor was fully onboard with where The Sticky was heading. He explained, "When I read [the script], I didn't immediately jump at it, but I had an agent who stayed on this project and kept calling me about it.

Is Prime Video’s 'The Sticky' Based on a True Story?
Image
Quick Links Prime Video's 'The Sticky' Is a Delightfully Strange Dark Comedy 'The Sticky' Is a Wild and Quirky Tale Based on True Events 'The Sticky' Is Now Available to Stream

The wild and crazy world we live in can serve as some major inspiration for Hollywood creations, with reality often proving to be stranger than fiction. Case in point: the highly-buzzed-about Prime Video dark comedy The Sticky, which features the talents of prolific character actress Margot Martindale and follows a Canadian maple syrup farmer as she concocts a daring heist to steal millions of dollars worth of syrup after being wronged by the authorities.

Despite the far-fetched premise of the engrossing series, it is actually rooted in facts and was loosely based on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist that took place between 2011 and 2012 in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, Quebec. Over $18 million in maple syrup was stolen by...

"For a Cliffhanger, You Couldn't Do Better:" 'The Sticky's Margo Martindale Knows You're Gonna Want Season 2

Three-time Emmy Award-winning actress Margo Martindale has found herself in a sticky situation. Well, her lead role as Ruth Landry in Prime Video's The Sticky has, at least. The series, by creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, is a crime comedy inspired by the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist — something Martindale's French-Canadian co-star, Guillaume Cyr, recalls seeing on the news years ago — and has a distinctly Fargo feel to it.

‘The Sticky’ Finale: Prime Video’s Rollicking Heist Comedy Begs for a Second Season
Image
As each episode of “The Sticky” declares, Prime Video’s twisted comedy series about a maple syrup heist in Canada, is definitely not accurately depicting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. But can you blame creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro for hearing an event title like that and wanting to let their imaginations run wild?

Across six episodes (and it deserved eight!), “The Sticky” presents an excellent case for television taking completely wild liberties with true events. With that episodic disclaimer explicitly absolving the showrunners of misinforming viewers, they’re essentially creating an original story based on a fun idea. So what if that idea happened in real life, but differently? What if it went this way instead?

The final episode, written by Donovan and Herro and directed by Michael Dowse, sees Ruth (Margo Martindale), Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy (Guillaume Cyr) finally follow through on their big plans,...

‘The Sticky’ Creators Detail Rewriting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist and Landing Jamie Lee Curtis
Image
When you ask the creators of “The Sticky” what led them to their comedic adventure series about a maple syrup heist gone wrong, they have two words: dumb luck.

“My sister happened to marry a Canadian. If that didn’t happen, we’d all be in a different room somewhere,” co-creator Brian Donovan told TheWrap. Over cheese and crackers one Christmas, Donovan first heard of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, a very real theft that happened between 2011-12 when roughly $18.7 million Canadian dollars’ worth of syrup was covertly stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.

“I immediately texted Ed [Herro] and we got working within a week, because it’s such a great story,” Donovan said.

But to make their Prime Video series, the duo needed to rewrite history a bit. “The real crime was pretty boring. They just very slowly and methodically stole syrup, and got caught. That’s not great TV,...

It’s nearly impossible to have lived a life untouched by a Chris Diamantopoulos performance. The Toronto-born star has been active in the industry for decades, and across all genres. He’s played the male lead in Waitress on Broadway, opposite composer Sara Bareilles. He’s shown up in dramas like The Boys in the Boat and Daisy Jones & The Six. You’ve heard him in animated shows for kids (Hamster & Gretel), adults (Harley Quinn) and everyone in between (Animaniacs). But if you’re a comedy fan, you’re basically guaranteed to have watched him in his most iconic roles: obnoxious billionaire Russ “Tres Comas” Hanneman in Silicon Valley and Brian, the documentary crew member/possible obstacle to Jim and Pam’s marriage in the final season of The Office.

Today, Diamantopoulos launches his latest series: Prime Video’s The Sticky. Inspired by a true crime story of the early aughts — but,...

The Sticky True Story: What Happened During The Real Canadian Maple Syrup Heist
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Sticky!

Amazon Prime Video's The Sticky is finally here, and here is the true story of what happened during the real Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist that inspired the show. Although The Stick is a fictionalized and comedic version of the events that led up to the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, the true story is entirely different, with the characters, motives, and more being made up for the show. However, there are some similarities between The Sticky's story and the real Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, so here is what is fact and what is fiction in the Amazon Prime Video show.

Starring Margo Martindale, Chris Diamantopoulos, and Guillaume Cyr, The Sticky follows three disconnected Canadian individuals who all come together to pull off a seemingly impossible heist that involves stealing millions of dollars worth of maple syrup. The six-episode comedy series started off...

How a Real Maple Syrup Heist Inspired the Completely Made-Up ‘The Sticky’
Image
Why do we watch horror movies? Well, I for one, do not! I’m way too scared, thank you very much. But why do others enjoy them? I’d guess brain damage but scientists claim it’s to experience true fear from a safe environment. Put more grandiosely: it’s a way to deal with our own mortality.

The horror genre is alive and well, but let me posit that true crime is our generation’s new horror. Everywhere you look, today’s audiences are grappling with their mortality through books, documentaries, podcasts, movies or television shows.

And it is that final arena, TV, in which I found myself embedded when I co-created The Sticky (along with Brian Donovan). Inspired by the true crime dubbed, “The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” in which scofflaws from The Great White North absconded with almost $20 million (Cad) of the sweet stuff.

Of course,...

‘I Didn’t See It as a Comedy’: The Sticky Star Previews Prime Video Series
Image
Just in time for winter, Prime Video unveils its offbeat crime comedy The Sticky, inspired by a real-life multi-million dollar maple syrup heist in Quebec. The limited series follows a trio of bumbling criminals who carry out a theft of their local syrup reserves -- including low-level career crook Mike Byrne, played by fan-favorite Chris Diamantopoulos. However, what starts out as a relatively innocuous plot to lift maple syrup quickly descends into murder and gunplay, and the situation escalates to lethal levels.

In an interview with Cbr, The Sticky actor Diamantopoulos explains the appeal of both the Prime Video series -- which also stars Doctor Odyssey's Margo Martindale and Guillaume Cyr -- and his role as Mike. The veteran performer reveals his love of comedy and acting inspirations. Plus, he also teases his upcoming role in Amazon's eagerly anticipated adaptation of the best-selling Image Comics series Criminal.

The Sticky TV Review: The infamous Canadian Maple Syrup Heist becomes a fun true-crime series
Image
Plot: A comedy-drama series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country’s multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus.

Review: It goes without saying that the last decade has been a boon for true-crime fans. From adaptations of podcasts to limited series of every tone imaginable, fictionalized retellings of shocking events that took place have served as wonderful opportunities for actors to stretch themselves in every way imaginable. Over that same stretch of time, Noah Hawley’s anthology series Fargo has proven that even the most bizarre and original stories can compete with true tales when the writing is strong enough. Taking the similar sensibilities of Fargo, Prime Video’s new series The Sticky blends dark humor with a true story to deliver an entertainingly original show that showcases a...

The Sticky Review — Mayhem. Mischief. Delicious Maple Syrup.
Image
Placing a “based-on-a true story” dark comedy in the snowy north carries with it some heavy connotations. The success of the Coen Brothers 1996 film Fargo, and its subsequent prestige television series on FX had mostly staked out this setting as their playground. However, The Sticky looks to needle into the setting while opening up the location. Who thought stealing syrup could be such a fruitful world to explore? With an excellent performance from (character actress) Margo Martindale leading the small ensemble, The Sticky scratched an itch for small-time heists. The Prime Video series maintains momentum and silliness despite intense moments of violence. This helps make the admittedly absurd story shine, despite the inclusion of some tired tropes.

The Sticky: Everything We Know About The Prime Video Comedy Series
Image
In 2012, the Canadian government-sanctioned Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers discovered that its precious barrels of sweet sap had been (gasp) stolen. Gone was the sugary liquid that filled the Fpaq warehouses. In its stead was mere water, unfit to pour over a hot stack of pancakes or glaze a juicy pork chop. It sounds silly, but the event cost Fpaq $18.7 million Cad and ranks among the most costly thefts in Canadian history. Judging by the fact that syrup production accounts for about $1.1 billion Cad to Canada's Gdp, the country's government took the crime very seriously. Now, the story is getting the Hollywood adaptation treatment in a half-hour comedy series coming to Prime Video.

Canada produces 90% of the world's maple syrup, and about 72% of that supply comes from the province of Quebec. That means at least 70% of the entire world's syrup was stolen and illegally distributed sometime between 2011 and...

‘Les Nôtres’ (Our Own) Review: A Clever, Chilly Examination of Grooming, Girlhood and Small-Town Gossip
Image
A moody, clenched drama that works its tension so deep you may find your palms marked with the indentations of your fingernails by the end, “Les Nôtres” is the deeply uneasy but compelling second film from director Jeanne Leblanc (“Isla Blanca”). Illuminated by a powerfully self-possessed performance by Émilie Bierre as the 13-year-old whose pregnancy will have dire consequences for all except the pedophile responsible, this is an enraging film astringent enough to peel the paint from the façade of virtue propped up by the small-town Quebecois community in which it takes place.

Pretty, popular Magalie (Bierre) and her little brother are being raised by her mother Isabelle (Marianne Farley) after her father died in an industrial tragedy for which the town of Sainte-Adeline is still in mourning. Isabelle is helped out by best friend Chantale, who happens to be married to the mayor and Isabelle’s employer, Jean-Marc...

Les nôtres Review: Stellar Drama Unpacks the Malicious Underbelly of a Tight-Knit Quebec Community
It takes a village. That’s what close, tight-knit communities like Sainte-Adeline, Quebec, say when asked how they can confront and conquer tough circumstances. With that sense of togetherness, however, comes a cliquish sensibility of superiority. They survive because they have each other. They survive because they’re vigilant and always watching to see where and when their help is required to pick someone up. It’s how they got through a horrible construction-site tragedy years prior that claimed too many friends and families’ lives. They picked up the slack, opened their homes, and came out the other side. It’s also how they vindictively turned thirteen-year-old Magalie Jodoin’s (Emilie Bierre) life upside-down upon discovering she was too far along with an unplanned pregnancy to terminate.

Director Jeanne Leblanc and co-writer Judith Baribeau pull no punches in portraying the malicious underbelly of the town at the center of Les nôtres.
