Women in Film (Wif) has unveiled its inaugural fellowship program, TheWrap can reveal exclusively.

This year’s fellowship program, which launched as the organization celebrates its 50th anniversary, recognizes 87 directors, writers, cinematographers, creative or indie producers, line producers, executives, reps, artisans and below-the-line crew members.

Open to women, nonbinary, and trans people across entertainment, the program will bring together the fellows for a year of mentorship from the Wif team, including guest speakers and master classes, networking, field trips and other individualized support.

With mentors from both the business and craft sides of the industry, each fellow will participate in six mentoring sessions with their cohort and mentor team, and will meet with Melissa Verdugo, a former talent manager and current Wif senior manager of career programs, to discuss an individualized plan based on each fellows’ needs.

MGM is in negotiations to acquire “Combat Control,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Sam Hargrave (“Extraction”).

Hargrave and Shelby Malone will serve as associate producers alongside executive producers Gyllenhaal and Ryan Cassells.

The Hideaway Entertainment president Matthew Rhodes, CEO Jonathan Gray and VP Kristy Grisham will produce and co-finance the project. Rhodes, who formerly led Bold Films, worked with Gyllenhaal on 2014’s “Nightcrawler.”

“Combat Control” is based on the New York Times bestseller “Alone at Dawn,” a true story about American war veteran John Chapman (to be played by Gyllenhaal), written by Dan Schilling and Lori Chapman Longfritz. Michael Russell Gunn (“Billions”) penned the screenplay. Ron West of Thruline Entertainment will also produce. West brought the manuscript of the book to Hideaway Entertainment before the book was published, and Hideaway optioned the property amid a heated bidding war.

MGM is in talks to acquire package “Combat School,” which has Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star with “Extraction” director Sam Hargrave attached to direct, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal.

“Combat School” tells the true story of the late Medal of Honor recipient John Chapman, and Special Ops Combat Controller, and his heroic one-man stand during the Afghan War, as he sacrificed his life to save the lives of twenty-three comrades-in-arms.
