‘Mirror Life: Modern Zombies’ Trailer: A New Kind of Zombie Movie [Exclusive]
Standing Eight Premiere Q&A
It’s hard to make a zombie film feel fresh, especially after the massive zombie obsession of the 00s and 10s. But, writers and directors Brian Kazmarck and Kazy Tauginas want to prove it can be done with their new film, Mirror Life: Modern Zombies.

In the new film:

“A global pandemic is narrowly averted. Shortly after, Tracy Kovalsky discovers that her cousin Jordan has gone missing after enrolling in an illegal study at a research facility for a miracle drug called Dumitor. Following an outbreak at the testing facility, Jordan and other patients are forced into lockdown. A life-and-death struggle for survival ensues as the patients are systematically hunted down while Tracy’s search for her cousin exposes the conspiracy to cover up the entire experiment by any means necessary.”

Watch the official trailer below:

Courtney Cavanaugh (Chicago Fire), Kazy Tauginas (John Wick), Cuyle Carvin (Zero Day), Lawrence Ballard...

‘Popeye the Slayer Man’ Brings Bloody Mayhem to UK Streaming
Image
Popeye is not here to save the day. At least, not in Popeye the Slayer Man, Robert Michael Ryan’s blood-drenched reinterpretation of the iconic cartoon sailor, which is preparing for its UK release on Prime Video in late July. The cult horror-slash-satire, already notorious for its extreme violence and warped character reinterpretation, has released a fresh batch of stills and a new promo clip ahead of its streaming debut, fuelling interest in what may be one of 2025’s most audacious horror experiments.

Originally launched in the US earlier this year, Popeye the Slayer Man transforms E. C. Segar’s beloved creation into a mutated, trauma-scarred cannery worker fuelled by contaminated spinach and violent retribution. Jason Robert Stephens takes on the title role, portraying a disfigured killer who haunts the abandoned Anchor Bay Cannery, the same factory where he once worked before corporate malpractice triggered a catastrophic contamination scandal. What...

Popeye The Slayer Man Review: our fave sailor is back, and he ain’t happy
Image
Plot: A group of college students embark on an investigation into the legendary Sailor Man. Unfortunately for them, they find him.

Review: He’s Popeye the Sailor Man! For decades, the animated character has delighted young fans. From the cartoons to the live-action Popeye featuring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, he is an iconic and beloved character. And just like Winnie the Pooh, the copyrights have lapsed, sending the spinach-guzzling hero into the Public Domain. And my, oh my, Popeye is kinda pissed. With his puffy, bloated face and ridiculously cartoonish arms, Jason Robert Stephens is undoubtedly having a good time killing off numerous victims in wacky ways.

Popeye the Slayer Man is what you’d expect from a B-movie horror flick. It tells of the local legend rumored to be stalking the abandoned Anchor Bay Cannery – look for more than a few fun Easter Eggs. After plans surface that...

Popeye the Slayer Man unveils a clip and gets a music video tie-in

It’s trendy these days to take a character from popular children’s stories and given them a horror twist. Lately we’ve been hearing about horror movies based on the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Bambi, Pinocchio, Three Blind Mice, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears… and like I said the last time I wrote about this, when one set of filmmakers decides to make a horror film featuring a beloved kids’ story character, there are sometimes multiple other sets of filmmakers working on horror films that center on the same character. We’ve seen this happen with Mickey Mouse, and now the character who’ll soon be seen in more than one horror movie is Popeye the Sailor Man. Last November, it was announced that Alpeke Entertainment is working on a slasher horror comedy called Shiver Me Timbers, which puts a horror twist on Popeye.

Horror Highlights: The Shrouds, 825 Forest Road, Popeye The Slayer Man
Image
The Shrouds: "In an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy. Written following the death of the director’s wife, the new film from David Cronenberg is both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia, set in an ominous world of self-driving cars, data theft, and A.I. personal assistants. Offering Cronenberg’s customary balance of malevolence and wit, The Shrouds is a sly...

Popeye The Slayer Man Stalks A Spinach Factory In Gruesome Red Band Trailer
Image
He's strong to the finish 'cos he eats his... radioactive spinach!

Last week, we shared a first look at some promo stills for a new Popeye horror movie from ITN Studios. Then, we brought you the first trailer for a completely separate project from Alpeke Entertainment called Shiver Me Timbers.

We mistakenly assumed these movies were one and the same, and we now have word on a third Popeye slasher flick from Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media titled Popeye the Slayer Man.

Directed by Robert Michael Ryan from a script by John Doolan, the movie focuses on “a group of friends who sneak into an abandoned spinach canning factory to film a documentary on the legend of the Sailor Man, who is said to haunt the factory and local docks.”

Popeye is a cold-blooded killer in the teaser trailer for Popeye the Slayer Man
Image
I can promise you've never seen Popeye the Sailor quite like this before. Cashing in on the latest trend in the horror genre of taking beloved characters from the public domain and turning them into gruesome slashers, Jeff Miller is producing new horror movie titled Popeye the Slayer Man, coming in 2025.

The film is described as providing an "alternate backstory for the legendary sailor," in short, now he's a murderer. Why? Because the spinach he's so famous for consuming in large quantities has been contaminated.

An open can with a faint toxic glow is visible in the teaser, as is this new bloated and grotesque version of the titular "slayer" man. It's clear that this movie won't shy away from gore. The teaser shows a few moments, including Popeye crushing one character's head and another stepping directly onto a nail. Popeye even delivers his catchphrase, "I am what I am,...

‘Dolls’ DVD Review

Stars: Thomas Downey, Dee Wallace, Trinity Simpson, Bret Green, Elise Muller, Melinda DeKay, Robert R. Ryel | Written by Justin Hawkins, Josh Hawkins | Directed by Cuyle Carvin

[Note: With the film finally released in the UK this week, here's a reposting of our review of Dolls from it's Us release last Summer]

Wow. You’ve got to have some balls to name your film Dolls. You’re stepping on the toes of ther legendary Stuart Gordon right there… Even moreso when your film actually concerns killer dolls too! This particular iteration of Dolls tells the story of a struggling children’s book author and his rebellious teenage daughter who move into a house they’ve inherited and find mysterious dolls in the attic. They soon learn that the dolls have a sinister, and deadly, past.

Of course Stuart Gordon’s Dolls is not the be all and end all of killer doll movies but it is, for myself and many other genre fans, certainly one of the best examples of the genre.
