‘Lupin’ Officially Renewed for Part 4, Will Consist of 8 Episodes With Production Underway
Image

It’s finally official, and this is better news than initially reported: the French hit title Lupin will be returning for a full fourth season. Production is now fully underway in Paris for the new season, which will consist of eight brand-new episodes. Here’s what was just revealed.

A fourth season has been long overdue for announcement, having been rumored for at least a couple of years now, but has heated up considerably this year. A few months back, we reported that Netflix had given Lupin a renewal but was cautious about what form the series would take. Given Omar Sy’s high demand, there were suggestions he’d only be returning for a special or movie of some description. Indeed, the actor spoke on a French radio station, suggesting it may be something other than a series announcement when directly asked about a fourth season.

‘Squad 36’ Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Director Olivier Marchal’s Squad 36 is a grounded, slow-paced thriller that meditates upon the very topical issue of police corruption. While the narrative focuses on the actions of individuals who abuse the powers they have been given to serve their own selfish means, the thematic significance of Squad 36 holds the rotting system and the seedy hierarchy of power accountable for creating an environment where such corruption festers. Characterization plays a key role in storylines such as this one, and it’s decent enough in the case of Squad 36. The issue is that the lead, whose Pov guides viewers through the narrative, is way less interesting than the characters who remain off-screen most of the time and yet affect the story the most. For a movie that is over two hours long, it is surprising the film doesn’t even have a fleshed-out roster of main characters—a...

“Squad 36” is a Netflix film starring Victor Belmondo, Tewfik Jallab, Yvan Attal and directed by Olivier Marchal.

Today marks the arrival of a French thriller that always pleases the audience while not leaving an excessive mark: a police story with a good plot, solid development, and characters with depth.

Directed by Olivier Marchal, “Squad 36” offers a raw and intense look into the world of Parisian law enforcement. Marchal, known for his gritty police thrillers like “Overdose” and “36th Precinct,” is no stranger to exploring the dark intricacies of police work. With “Squad 36,” he adapts Michel Tourscher’s novel “Flic Requiem” to the screen, creating a narrative that delves into the complexities and moral ambiguities of modern policing.

Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for Lupin season 3!

Lupin creator George Kay discusses the possibility of a season 4, stating that the show has "very ambitious foundations" and is set up for a long life. Lupin Part 3 Ending Explained
Image
This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin season 3.

When you’re a gentleman thief renowned for his jewel heists, how do you top yourself? By killing the legend. In the latest installment of George Kay’s Lupin, Assane Diop (Omar Sy) faked his own death to protect his family, only to be drawn back into the world of the living when his mother Mariama (Naky Sy Savane) was kidnapped by a dangerous figure from his past. For the first time forced into heists not of his own choosing, Assane has had to rely on his encyclopedic knowledge of literary gentleman thief Arsène Lupin—as well as his usual arsenal of impeccable disguises—to pay a thieves’ ransom in stolen pearls, paintings, and bracelets.

While each heist was the usual blend of clever hiding-in-plain-sight and intricate two-days-ago time jumps that viewers have come to expect, the overall season arc of Lupin Part 3 was relatively straightforward…...

A Brighter Tomorrow - Amber Wilkinson - 17604
Soufiane Guerrab in Chapter 5 (2021)
Mehdi (Soufiane Guerrab) is a safecracker - although that description makes things sound much more glamorous than they are. He and a couple of old school friends, M'Barek (M'Barek Belkouk) and Thibault (Thibault Cathalifaud)  have got things down to a fine art, but it's basically a case of clever planning and a lot of brute force. None of them are getting any younger, though, and Mehdi's responsibilities are weighing on him as he tries to patch things up with Sarah (Souheila Yacoub), the mum of his baby son, who moved out because she didn't want to share their home with Mehdi's mum.

Yassine Qnia's low-key take on all this is stitched well into the fabric of the working-class banlieu. Sarah and Thibault both hold down 'regular' jobs - she at a hairdresser's and he in a recycling plant - but it's clear how Mehdi views this sort of "shit work". Equally,...

Newen Connect Explores Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine With Investigative Documentaries (Exclusive)
Image
Along with its premium scripted lineup, Newen Connect is launching a pair of timely investigative documentaries, “Ukraine” and “Wagner,” which are providing insight into the current war.

Now filming, “Ukraine” is being co-directed by Ksenia Blochakova, the Russia correspondent of the news channel France 24, and Philippe Lagnier, a journalist working at Newen-owned production banner Capa.

“Ukraine” is a one-hour documentary featuring interviews with soldiers, politicians and experts speaking about the Russian offensive. The doc, commissioned by Arte in France and in Germany, is expected to air at the end of April.

Chloé Persyn, who joined Newen Connect last year as head of factual distribution, said “Ukraine” illustrates the banner’s capacity to turn around in-depth documentaries exploring complex geo-political issues in record time.

“Wagner,” co-directed by Blochakova and Alexandra Jousset, sheds light on the Wagner Group, a private Russian military force which is known as Putin’s shadow army.

Netflix’s hit series “Lupin” is currently shooting its highly anticipated third instalment in Paris with French star Omar Sy reprising his role as Assane Diop, a character inspired by the world famous gentleman thief and master of disguise, Arsène Lupin. The show is Netflix’s second biggest international hit after “Squid Game.”

The production was announced on Thursday by both Netflix and Sy on their respective Twitter accounts. Sy, who is now based in Los Angeles, posted a selfie with his staple bright smile against a rooftop view of Paris, with a caption that reads “Feels good being home! ‘On The Verge’ Producer The Film TV Lines Up Shows With Fresh Talent, ‘Golri,’ ‘Casa Girls,’ ‘Visions’
Image
The Film TV, the Paris-based outfit headed by well-established producers Michael Gentile and Lauraine Heftler, has gained a substantial track record in three years.

The banner is presenting its first two shows at Series Mania Festival, Julie Delpy’s TV debut “On The Verge” which is backed by Canal Plus and Netflix; and “Jeune et Golri,” a series set against the backdrop of the stand-up comedy world.

Commissioned by French pay TV service Ocs, “Jeune et Golri” is a half-hour contemporary romantic comedy series based on an original idea by Agnès Hurstel, an actor and screenwriter, who created the show with Victor Saint-Macary (“Le Brio”) and Léa Domenach.

Hurstel stars in the show as Prune, a 25 year-old stand-up comedian who falls in love with a middle-aged man, Francis, not knowing he has a six-year-old girl. While Prune herself still feels like a teenager, she becomes an unlikely step mom to this little girl.

Netflix’s Lupin: The Evolution of Lupin vs. Ganimard
Image
This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin Part 2.

Netflix’s Lupin ended Part 1 on the ultimate fannish moment, with Officer Youssef Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab) addressing Assane Diop (Omar Sy) as “Arsène Lupin?”—and then picked up Part 2 with Assane responding in turn, identifying his new ally Guedira as “Ganimard,” the name of Lupin’s archnemesis. Throughout the latter five episodes of George Kay’s (Killing Eve) French crime drama, the gentleman thief and the police officer replicate their literary heroes’ dynamic—shifting between rivals on opposite sides of the law to something approaching friendship—while evolving the relationship beyond Maurice Leblanc’s original characters.

“Who could baffle the schemes of Arsène Lupin better than Ganimard, the patient and astute detective?” Leblanc writes early on in Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar. Wherever the gentleman thief is mentioned, his law-abiding archrival quickly follows, hot on the metaphorical trail. Like the best cat-and-mouse pairs,...

‘Lupin’ Review: New Episodes of Netflix’s International Hit Keep Trying to Do Too Much All at Once
Image
The satisfied smile of Assane Diop as he walks away from people he’s just foiled is an incandescent marvel. To say that “Lupin” succeeds because of the man behind that smile, Omar Sy, is a vast understatement. Take him out of this show — whether in the first five episodes that became an early-2021, word-of-mouth international hit or in the second five that make up what Netflix calls “Part 2” — and it’s hard to imagine any other part of it equipped to handle what the confidence in that title performance brings.

It’s odd, then, that “Lupin” Part 2 tries its hardest to sideline so much of that Sy playfulness that made up the bulk of what got people hooked back in January. Instead, the show doubles down on its conspiracy side, threads through even more of its time-hopping setups, and makes its way to a finale that seems as stuck...

Omar Sy in Lupin (2021)
Lupin Part 2 Ending Explained: What’s Next for Netflix’s Gentleman Thief?
Omar Sy in Lupin (2021)
This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin Part 2.

Netflix’s French crime drama Lupin began by adapting Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin adventure “The Queen’s Necklace,” but while the ten episodes have put new spins on other Lupin stories, the overall story concerns the eponymous necklace and how it links the Pellegrini and Diop families across twenty-five years. The recently-released Part 2 resolves the series’ biggest question: Will Assane Diop (Omar Sy) be able to have his revenge on Hubert Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre)? More vitally, will he be able to do so while upholding Arsène Lupin’s code of the gentleman thief—that is, to get justice without killing?

“Chapter 10” wraps up the Pellegrini conflict with what Assane refers to as “our last show”—an epic heist where the valuable to be stolen is a few minutes’ privacy alone with Pellegrini. That the confrontation takes place at the Théâtre...

With ‘Lupin’ Part 2, Showrunner George Kay Balances Pleasing Leblanc Fans and Newbies Alike
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched Part 2 of “Lupin,” streaming now on Netflix.

Much of the fun of watching Netflix’s original series “Lupin,” inspired by the Maurice Leblanc books, is in anticipating what cleverness and charm Assane Diop (played by Omar Sy) will deploy to meet his goals. Fans of the famous French novels are looking for nods to the stories, while those who have never heard of the “gentleman thief” Arsène Lupin are simply engrossed in the thrill of watching Assane, say, steal Marie Antoinette’s jewels from the Louvre.

With the anticipated premiere of part two of the story on Friday, series creator and showrunner George Kay continues to thread that needle as Assane rushes to save his son Raoul (Etan Simon) from the clutches of one of Hubert Pellegrini’s henchmen and prove Pellegrini’s guilt in framing Assane’s father.

Lupin Part 2: What to Expect
Image
This piece contains spoilers for Netflix’s Lupin.

Netflix’s compelling French crime comedy-drama Lupin ended Part 1 on a hell of a cliffhanger. Yes, there’s Assane Diop’s (Omar Sy) son Raoul (Etan Simon) getting snatched by Pellegrini’s cleaner Leonard (Adama Niane) in the Maurice Leblanc-obsessed town of Étretat, though honestly that had been telegraphed throughout “Chapter 5.” The real stunner is when Officer Guedira (Soufiane Guerrab), perhaps the only person whose Lupin fandom rivals Assane’s, tracks down the gentleman thief and addresses him as, “Arsène Lupin?”

And that’s where Part 1 ends, with two adversaries—who might well become allies—finally meeting on the beach while fellow fans in top hats, capes, and monocles venture out to the Hollow Needle, not knowing the potential tragedy that could unfold in Étretat. Where can Lupin go from here?

Thankfully, Netflix has already confirmed that Part 2 will premiere later...

Indeed, Lupin Part 1 has smashed expectations so far, trending in Netflix’s Top Ten globally and reaching number one in France, Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, the Philippines and Sweden.

The series stars Omar Sy (Jurassic World) as Assane Diop. As a teen, Assane’s life changes dramatically after his father is accused of a crime he didn’t commit and dies. Part 1 follows Assane 25 years later...
