Inside the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront: Big Laughs for ‘HBO Max’ Name Change; No NBA, But Shaq Still Stops By to Promote ‘Superman’ Movie
Image
Normally, Conan O’Brien and the “Inside the NBA” stars get the biggest laughs at a Warner Bros. Discovery upfront. O’Brien wasn’t there, instead appearing via a quick, albeit hysterical, video mocking the wonkiness of ad speak. And despite TNT’s loss of the NBA , legend-turned-analyst Shaquille O’Neal still dropped by, but as part of a gag for the DC team promoting their upcoming “Superman” film.

Instead, the audience of ad buyers gathered at Madison Square Garden for Tuesday’s Wbd upfront saved their biggest guffaws for the admittedly hysterical announcement that the company would rebrand its streaming service “HBO Max” — two years after dumping the “HBO” part of the name to just go “Max.”

“I know you’re all shocked, but the good news is I have a drawer full of stationary from the last time around,” HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys joked to the crowd...

HGTV Is Going to Renovate the ‘Bachelor’ Mansion
Image
HGTV’s latest renovation of a memorable pop-culture location will come with a bunch of roses.

The cable network has announced a series with the working title Renovating the Bachelor Mansion, with the goal of, uh, renovating the Bachelor mansion. Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of the Warner Bros. Television Group and U.S. Networks, announced the series, along with host of other shows, at Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation on Wednesday.

Why is a Warner Bros. Discovery channel making a show about a location in an ABC show? There is still corporate synergy at play here, as Warner Bros. produces The Bachelor franchise.

Renovating the Bachelor Mansion will feature former Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants “who possess expert reno skills” will compete in a series of design challenges at the Augora Hills, California, house that’s the home base for the franchise. The winner gets a cash prize.

‘Dancing With Sharks’ and ‘Renovating the Bachelor Mansion’ Among First Orders as Channing Dungey Shares Plans for Warner Bros. Discovery’s U.S. Networks
Image
Channing Dungey is five months into her new dual job as chairman and CEO of both the Warner Bros, TV Group and US Networks, having taken over most of the company’s basic cable portfolio in January. Now, prior to Wbd’s upfront presentation on Wednesday, Dungey spoke to Variety about strategy for the networks and her first round of announcements — including two that harken back to her days as ABC’s entertainment prexy.

Among the programs revealed by Dungey at the Madison Square Garden event: Discovery’s “Dancing With Sharks” (working title) — yep, a cheeky play on the Alphabet net’s “Dancing With the Stars” and even hosted by that competition series’ former emcee, Tom Bergeron. The special, which will naturally run during Shark Week, is described as an “unprecedented underwater dance competition between expert divers and their shark partners.”

The Simpsons Revealed How Lisa And Bart Will Die (And It's Perfect)
Image
The latest episode of "The Simpsons," season 36's "Stew Lies,' features an opening storyline between Lisa and Bart that wraps up surprisingly fast. Bart tries to drive Lisa crazy by repeating everything she says, committing hard to the bit even after days, weeks, and months have passed. At first, Lisa is annoyed, but she decides to use the opportunity to improve Bart's life. She gets him to learn the saxophone, learn another language, and perform better at school. By the end of the first act, Lisa reads aloud a heartfelt letter to her brother that celebrates their sibling bond, while a moved-to-tears Bart copies along with her.

It's a storyline so sweet it makes me uncomfortable. (My cold and bitter heart can no longer handle things so pure.) Luckily for the more cynical "Simpsons" fans, this opening Bart/Lisa storyline is quickly scrapped for the main storyline about Homer...

We Finally Know How Bart and Lisa Simpson Will Die
Image
This article contains spoilers for The Simpsons' “Stew Lies.”

The Simpsons has killed off a number of characters over the years — from Bleeding Gums Murphy, to Maude Flanders, to poor old Larry the Bar Fly. But thankfully, we’ve never been forced to witness the demise of any members of the Simpson family in a non-Treehouse of Horror episode. Until now, that is.

The most recent episode of the show, “Stew Lies,” begins with a surprisingly heartwarming storyline in which Bart’s efforts to annoy the hell out of Lisa by repeating everything she says, ends up bringing them closer together. While this plot point resolves itself after only around five minutes of screen time, during the episode’s closing credits, we get a glimpse of Lisa and Bart’s relationship in the future.

An adult, “Professor” Lisa is now an astrophysicist working for the Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute.

‘The Simpsons’ Just Delivered One of its Most Heartwarming Episodes Ever
Image
One of the key ingredients that you’ll find in most of the very best episodes of The Simpsons is heart. And by that we mean love, not a dump truck full of army surplus beef organs.

This week’s episode, “Stew Lies,” proved that even after 36 years on the air, The Simpsons can still find effective ways to tug on audiences’ heartstrings. And, oddly enough, it did so in just five minutes.

The episode begins with Marge and the kids heading home from the grocery store, only for Bart and Lisa to get into a squabble after they both call shotgun. Lisa briefly copies Bart, and as a result, Bart decides to punish Lisa by repeating every single thing she says. Her efforts to thwart Bart’s plan (complimenting herself) are unsuccessful because, as Marge points out, “Bart commits to the bit. Always has.”

Bart stubbornly keeps repeating Lisa...

This Week’s Episode Wasn’t the First Time ‘The Simpsons’ Clowned on Guy Fieri
Image
This week’s episode of The Simpsons found Homer palling around with a reality TV chef named Thad, played by prolific voice actor John Dimaggio. And come to think of it, Dimaggio does have some experience when it comes to voicing cartoon celebrity chefs.

Thad, the goateed host of Dude vs Food, has spiky bleached blond hair, a wardrobe full of horrifically garish T-shirts and frequently wears his sunglasses on the back of his head. In other words, he’s not exactly the most subtle parody of Guy Fieri.

Although, Fieri never passed out on the set of his own show looking like the world’s tackiest bloated corpse — that we know of.

“Stew Lies” isn’t a very flattering portrayal of Fieri/Thad. While Homer is a huge fan, others aren’t so sure about his brand of “performative gluttony.” And without spoiling too much, the host doesn’t...

The Kentucky Derby may claim extravagant hats, Secretariat and mint juleps as among its most notable emblems, but it also draws a roster of star attendees, from fellow athletes to Hollywood mainstays. This year, the 151st edition of the May event drew Yellowstone boss Taylor Sheridan (likely place for him to be), “A Bar Song” crooner Shaboozey, actress Selma Blair and many others.

Often referred to as The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports, the Kentucky Derby — held annually at Louisville, Ky.’s Churchill Downs horse racing complex — is among the most prestigious such events globally. Featuring Thoroughbreds running for a distance of just over a mile, the fete traces back to 1875 and is the oldest continuously running sports event in the United States.

Preceded by the Kentucky Derby festival and featuring a slew of events, the weekend-long festivities draw notable figures from all spheres of life, including sports, entertainment,...

"It Was a Cool Idea": Emilio Estevez Wrote a Sequel to Stephen King's Bonkers 'Maximum Overdrive' Film
Image
Stephen Kinghas become the master of horror, with dozens of his works adapted into film and television, but one of his most infamous projects rises above all the others: Maximum Overdrive. The 1986 film marked King's sole directorial effort, with the author swearing off directing afterward due to the insanity of making the film. But it has become a cult classic for its campy, bonkers nature, and star Emilio Estevezrecently revealed that he even scripted a sequel.

"I started to imagine what a sequel to Maximum Overdrive would look like, and during the [2023 Hollywood] strike, I wrote one," Estevez told Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast. "I don't have the rights to any of this... I started on page one, now I'm on page 10, I'm on page 20, now it's 50 pages, and I can't stop." Estevez added more about the premise of his truly wild-sounding sequel:

"I created an insane world.

Emilio Estevez Wrote a Sequel to ‘Maximum Overdrive’ but No One Will Make It
Image
While Stephen King adaptations have been on a high for many years now, before that there were some atrocious duds made bearing the prolific horror author’s name – including the one that he directed himself. That movie was the trash fire that is Maximum Overdrive, a movie based on the short story “Trucks” that sees an alien presence bringing a bunch of large vehicles to life in a murderous way. And it seems that its star, Emilio Estevez has been working on a sequel.

Maximum Overdrive was written and directed by King and remains his only directorial effort for a good reason. Released in 1986, the film had a small budget of just over $9 million, but made only $7.5 million at the box office. In addition, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score sits at a lowly 14%, while its audience score fared somewhat better but still “rotten” at 50%. However, after starring in the film,...
