Blade Trilogy Writer David S. Goyer On MCU Reboot Delay: "Why Is It Taking So Long?"
Image
Like the rest of us, David S. Goyer is wondering why Marvel Studios is having so much trouble cracking the long-awaited Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali, and has offered his services to Kevin Feige should he need any help getting the project back on track.

Goyer, who wrote the scripts for all three movies in the original Blade trilogy and directed 2004's Blade: Trinity, was asked if he would have any interest in writing the MCU reboot during an interview with Screen Rant.

“I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.”

Though the reboot was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was...

Blade reboot was going to be set in the 1920s and feature Flying Lotus music
The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’re coming up on the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Now, we don’t know if we’re going to get a Blade reboot at all – but we have received confirmation that, at some point in the development process, the movie was going to be set in the 1920s and the plan was for recording artist Flying Lotus, who recently made his feature directorial debut with the sci-fi horror film Ash, to provide some music for it.

Flying Lotus Reveals He Was Set To Produce Music for 'Blade' Before Marvel Shelved the Reboot
Image
Blade fans are still patiently awaiting an update on the Marvel film's release. Although it currently seems like it's nowhere in the near future, they still get excited about what "could've been." The film has had various planned release dates, with the latest being November 2025; however, that's no longer happening, and no replacement dates have been shared as before. While many dedicated fans imagine what the film would've looked like, there's no need to guess who would've produced its music. The Grammy Award-winning record producer, Flying Lotus, has now revealed that he was set to produce music for Blade and is holding onto a glimmer of hope that he'll still get the chance...if the MCU reboot ever happens.

Flying Lotus, also known as FlyLo, revealed in an X (formerly Twitter) post that he was indeed signed on to write music for the Marvel film before it was removed from release.

More Evidence Suggests Marvel’s “Blade” Film Is Cancelled
Image
In 2019, Marvel announced they would do a reboot of the popular “Blade” character in the MCU starring Mahershala Ali. Over the years, the film was pushed back due to Covid and then the Hollywood strikes, and now the rumors indicate the film is shelved or canceled.

Originally, Kevin Feige said the film would release on November 3, 2023, with filming beginning in early October 2022 and wrapping in January 2o23. Eventually, the film was given a November 2025 release date, but that too has been removed.

Throughout the production of “Blade” a parade of people associated with the film dropped out, including Bassam Tariq, Yann Demange, Damián García, and several different writers.

Recently, there has been discussion and rumors indicating that the film has been shelved for now.

More evidence suggests “Blade” has been cancelled.

Grammy Award-winning artist Flying Lotus posted that he was writing music for the film and indicated the “Blade” film...

Blade Now Said To Be On "Indefinite Hold" As Flying Lotus Reveals He Was Set To Write Music For The Reboot
Image
Though Blade was removed from Marvel Studios' slate late last year, we had heard that the movie was simply delayed and would eventually move forward. Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be the case.

Despite recent reports that the MCU reboot was still on track to commence production in the UK at some point later this year, insider Daniel Richtman claims to have confirmed that Blade has now been put "on indefinite hold."

Backing up this claim is recording artist/DJ Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, who has taken to X to reveal that he had signed on to write the music for the project before things fell through - and he does not sound optimistic about the film getting back on track.

I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new Blade movie before it fell thru.

Flying Lotus Reveals He Was Writing Music for MCU’s ‘Blade’ Movie Before It Fell Apart
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten any official updates on Marvel’s planned Blade reboot movie, which was originally announced way back in 2019. While Wesley Snipes did reprise his iconic role as New Line’s Daywalker in Deadpool & Wolverine last year, the character’s official introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe still seems to be no closer to reality.

It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last several years, and it’s currently without a date at all after getting pulled from its most recent theatrical release date of November 7, 2025. Not helping is that the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.

Mahershala Ali was attached to play the title character, with...

Ash (2025) Movie Ending Explained: Who is the Real Parasite?
Aaron Paul and Eiza González in Ash (2025)
“Ash” (2025) operates at the hazy intersection of truth and imagination, making it often hard to decipher. It shows the world through the eyes of a female astronaut, stuck in a spaceship on a distant planet, unable to remember most of her past. She crosses paths with a man who helps her find her footing. However, nothing is as it seems in this survival thriller that shows her struggle to find a way out of her misery. The film remains elusive for most of its duration, hoping to help us understand her anguish and mental chaos. However, it relies heavily on its sound design and hypnotizing music, which doesn’t come as a surprise since the film is helmed by record producer Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison), who has often ventured into these exact realms through his music.

Spoilers Ahead

Aaron Paul and Eiza González in Ash (2025)
Ash (2025) Movie Review: A hollow sci-fi spectacle that tries to coast by on borrowed chills
Aaron Paul and Eiza González in Ash (2025)
When does your inspiration become so heavy that the creation ceases to have an existence on its own? American music producer turned filmmaker Flying Lotus’ (popularly known as FlyLo) “Ash” is a sci-fi horror that never offers a shred of originality. I mean filmmakers have been inspired by other movies for as long as the beginning of motion picture itself. Still, when your final product has nothing to offer beyond just elevated horror vibes, there’s a big hole in the continuum that cannot be filled.

The plot of “Ash” follows Riya (Eiza González), an astronaut who wakes up in her space station with her memory almost completely wiped out. Her physical attributes, her training, and her work are still intact in her core, but whatever wiped out all of her crew, who she finds splattered around the space vessel with their heads smashed to smithereens, is nowhere to be...

Eiza González and Aaron Paul Talk About Their New Sci-Fi Horror Movie ‘Ash’: “It really is one of the most unique pieces of wardrobe that I’ve ever worn.”
Image
After having premiered on March 11 at the SXSW, the new sci-fi horror movie Ash started its wide theatrical run on March 21, 2025. The story follows two people in space who have to deal with the ramifications of a tragedy, but there is a big issue of trust between the two of them.

Directed by Flying Lotus, the movie stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul as Riya and Brion, respectively. The two stars recently went to social media to share their reactions to the movie, and there is one thing they praised in particular.

When Riya, an astronaut, wakes up on a distant planet and finds her whole crew dead, she is approached by Brion, who is supposedly there to save her. She does not remember what happened and only has horrible flashbacks of certain scenes while Brion is there to assist her.

‘Ash’ Review: Aaron Paul’s Slick and Gory Sci-Fi Monster Movie
Image
Mondays, am I right? First you wake up on an alien planet in an outpost that’s leaking oxygen, surrounded by the bloody remains of your co-workers who you probably killed. Then I swear it’s all downhill from there. Don’t even ask me to bury their bodies until I’ve had my coffee! You wouldn’t like me when I’m cranky. I mean, you really wouldn’t like me.

“Ash” is a sci-fi/horror movie in the vein of “Alien” and “Planet of the Vampires” and “Galaxy of Terror” and “Pandorum” and “Event Horizon” and “The Thing” and “Leviathan” and “Screamers” and “The Cloverfield Paradox” and “Alien Cargo” and “Dracula 3000” and “Leprechaun 4: In Space.” It’s also clear that some of the people in the production liked playing “Dead Space,” “Doom,” “System Shock,” and/or “Portal,” to name a few. It’s hard to come...

‘Ash’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Are Riya And Brion Dead Or Alive?
Image
Ash is a 2025 science fiction horror film that has clearly been inspired by video games of the genre, in particular Dead Space and even the newer Callisto Protocol, to some extent. The plot follows an astronaut named Riya, who wakes up to find all her team members brutally killed aboard their space station, which is set on a planet far away from Earth, and follows her journey of retracing the events from the recent past as she tries to figure out what exactly went down. Although the visual splendor and the use of high-contrast colors make it quite a treat to look at, Ash is extremely boring and lazily convoluted at most times, making it evident that the concept had actually been of a music video for rapper Flying Lotus, who is also the director of the film

Spoiler Alert

What is the film about?

‘Magazine Dreams’ With Jonathan Majors Gets Its Shot In Theaters — Specialty Preview
Image
Magazine Dreams, which premiered at Sundance in 2023, had a long road to the big screen but arrived this weekend, along with Sami Raimi-produced Locked, sci-fi horror Ash, SXSW 2024 Audience and Grand Jury Award-winner Bob Trevino Likes It and Being Maria, a biopic of Last Tango In Paris actress Maria Schneider.

We’ll see. Last weekend was a box office dud and this one looks quiet too as audiences seems to have forgotten they really liked going to movies last fall.

Magazine Dreams, by writer-director Elijah Bynum, after months in the wilderness found a home with Briarcliff Entertainment, which is opening the film at 815 theaters. This will test the Jonathan Majors bodybuilding psychodrama that debuted at Sundance in 2023 but was derailed by abuse accusations against its star after winning the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision and a distribution deal with Searchlight Pictures, which dropped it. The actor...

Ash Review: Trippy Sci-Fi Horror Doesn’t Quite Expand The Mind But Still Blows A Few Brains [SXSW 2025]
Image
Come get your mind blown out the back of your skull in Flying Lotus’ newest feature, Ash! Recently celebrating its World Premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival, Ash is an interstellar mind trip halfway across the universe where the air is toxic, the environment is hostile, and your own mind is the most untrustworthy place. Starring Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), with a supporting appearance from Indonesian ass kicker Iko Uwais (The Raid), this sci-fi brain scrambler continues Flying Lotus’ streak of brash, in-your-face cinema that you can’t see anywhere else.

Set in the far reaches of outer space, on a planet that Earth scientists hoped could be a suitable replacement for the planet we long ago destroyed, Riya (Eiza Gonzalez) awakens on her ship in the aftermath of an attack. She has a massive head injury, her ship is in shambles, and her entire...

‘Ash’ Filmmaker Flying Lotus Lives for Practical Gore Gags and Survival Horror Games [Interview]
Image
Eiza González‘s Riya awakens on a distant planet with no memory and her crewmates slaughtered in Ash, the trippy sci-fi movie from director Flying Lotus and writer Jonni Remmler.

Flying Lotus doesn’t just helm the survival horror movie that’s releasing in theaters on March 21; the Grammy Award Winner also composed the score. Music, of course, is important to the filmmaker. In a recent chat with Bloody Disgusting, he revealed the unique role music played during production.

“The music was the most fun part of the process,” Flying Lotus tells us. “Of the whole thing, doing the music was great because I was in my little cubicle and riffing with the sound design department. They were in a little suite right next door to mine, so I got to just geek out with them over the sound through post-production. I would be writing a tune or a scene,...

Ash SXSW Review — Flying Lotus Brings Visual Style and Little Else to Aaron Paul/Eiza González Sci-Fi Horror
Image
Flying Lotus may be best known as a musician, winning a Grammy for producing Kendrick Lamar’s masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, but in the cinephile community, he is known as one of horror cinema’s most exciting sickos. His sophomore feature, Ash, offers every ounce of aesthetic style that fans will expect, but it is squandered on an uninteresting and derivative script.

Ash Review

Ash follows a woman who wakes up as the sole survivor of a vicious attack on her interplanetary mission as she sets out on a mission to discover what happened to the rest of her crew. It’s an unholy conglomeration of every sci-fi horror trope you can think of, from Alien to The Thing, resulting in a film that is very difficult to get invested in.

Because Ash is so generic, it ends up dragging despite a runtime that is just over 90 minutes. It...

‘Ash’ SXSW Review – Flying Lotus Takes on Survival Horror in Gnarly Sci-Fi Movie
Image
Flying Lotus leaves behind the abstract surrealism of feature debut Kuso in favor of a more conventional narrative in sophomore effort Ash, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t bear his stamp of gnarly horror. What Ash lacks in story originality, it makes up for in vibrant imagery, visual worldbuilding, and visceral horror in this gnarly sci-fi freakout movie that could double as a visual survival horror concept album thanks to Flying Lotus’ immersive earworm score.

The setup feels familiar: sole survivor Riya Ortiz (Eiza González) awakens on a space station located on some foreign, distant planet battered, bruised, and with no memories. Riya knows something horrible happened; she’s surrounded by the gruesomely dispatched bodies of her crewmates. She’s determined to regain her memories and find out what happened, much to the chagrin of new arrival Brion (Aaron Paul), who only wants to solve the grim murder...

Flying Lotus is sharing “Oxygene,” the first song on the soundtrack of his self-scored directorial debut, Ash. The space horror finds Aaron Paul, Eiza González, and Flying Lotus himself – born Steven Ellison – in new, sci-fi worlds of psychological and physical terror. “Oxygene” begins dark and foreboding, buzzy synths that sound like bugged-out footsteps before shakers and organ-like riffs give it a glimmer of hope.

Full Trailer for Flying Lotus' Sci-Fi Horror 'Ash' Set on a Strange Planet
Image
"Unusual life form detected." What is it?! Rlje Films has debuted the full official trailer for Ash, the next cinema project from acclaimed musician / filmmaker Flying Lotus. It's ready for release in theaters this March! It's his latest feature since making the experimental Kuso film in 2017, along with a fun short film in the V/H/S/99 anthology. A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events. Apparently this is less experimental and more "contained" than Kuso, with a full-on production budget. He shot it down in Nz: "People go to New Zealand to shoot sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I was [working with] all these people who worked on The Lord of the Rings and other Peter Jackson and James Cameron stuff." What David Lynch Was Famous for After His Final Movie
Image
While David Lynch never directed another feature film after the 2006 release of Inland Empire, he nevertheless remained quite busy over the last 19 years of his life. The biggest and most famous project from this era was the long-awaited third season of Twin Peaks (from Showtime in 2017), for which Lynch directed and co-wrote every episode. But most of Lynch's artistic output during this post-movie period saw him branch out into mediums outside of film and television, including music, painting, writing, and even YouTube. Furthermore, Lynch directed a number of short films, music videos, and TV commercials, often in collaboration with other artists and organizations.

Nor did Lynch ever stop trying to get another feature film or serialized TV series off the ground. Even just five months before his death, he steadfastly promised in a post onTwitter/X that he would "never retire," despite his recent emphysema diagnosis rendering him unable to leave his house.

Hollywood Pays Tribute to David Lynch: “A Gracious Man and Fearless Artist”
Image
Iconic filmmaker David Lynch died on January 16th at the age of 78. Artists, creatives, and members of the film community at large took to social media to express their gratitude for Lynch’s visionary, distinct work.

Longtime collaborator and friend Kyle MacLachlan wrote a lengthy tribute on Instagram, saying he owed “my entire career, and life really” to Lynch’s vision. “I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear,” he said. “My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone.”

Naomi Watts, who starred in Mulholland Drive, said her “heart is broken.” She added, “The world will not be the same without him. His creative mentorship was truly powerful. He put me on the map.”

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Spielberg opened up about his own relationship with Lynch.

Image
David Lynch, the trailblazing filmmaker and artist who made the familiar strange and the unfamiliar terrifying, has died at the age of 78.

“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch,” according to a statement released Thursday on Facebook. “We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.'”

“It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way,” the statement concluded, referencing his cherished weather reports.

Since 2020, Lynch had been suffering from emphysema, which had left him confined to his house and relying on supplemental oxygen. According to Deadline, he was recently forced to relocate from his Los Angeles-area house due to the...

Flying Lotus Releases Surprise EP Spirit Box: Stream
Image
Genre-blending artist, actor, and filmmaker Flying Lotus has unveiled a surprise EP titled Spirit Box, his first non-soundtrack project since 2019. Stream it below.

While Steven Ellison (Flying Lotus) is often inspired by influences from anime to outer space, Spirit Box pulls from the mystical and supernatural. According to a statement about the eight-track offering, “Spirit Box arriving near Halloween is no coincidence — it’s a time where everyone gets the chance to transform into something different, something surprising, maybe even something scary.”

The versatile creator has used this project as an official foray into house music, highlighting elements of dance and electronica more than ever before. Spirit Box was preceded by a pair of singles, “Ingo Swann” and “Garmonbozia,” and the full project offers plenty of the jazzy, avant-garde energy typically featured throughout a Flying Lotus album.

Earlier this month, Flying Lotus revealed the trailer for Ash, an upcoming science...

First Look Teaser for Flying Lotus' Next Film 'Ash' Trippy Sci-Fi Horror
Image
"What happened here?" Rlje Films has revealed a first look teaser for Ash, the next cinema project from acclaimed musician / filmmaker Flying Lotus. It's his latest feature since making the experimental Kuso film in 2017, along with a short film in the V/H/S/99 anthology. A woman wakes up on a distant planet and finds the crew of her space station viciously killed. Her investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events. Apparently this is less experimental and more "contained" than Kuso, with a full-on production budget. He shot it down in Nz: "People go to New Zealand to shoot sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I was [working with] all these people who worked on The Lord of the Rings and other Peter Jackson and James Cameron stuff." Ash stars Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale, and Flying Lotus himself. Whoa this looks rad! Hell yes!

Flying Lotus Confirms He Made Two of Apple’s iPhone Ringtones
Image
Across a nearly 20-year career, Flying Lotus has built up quite the resume: six albums, dozens of film scores, high profile collaborations, and apparently, two iPhone ringtones that have been on devices since the 2019 launch of iOS 13.

The contributions were confirmed by the Apple podcast Twenty Thousand Hertz, which takes a deep dive into recognizable and ubiquitous sounds and breaks them down note by note. Their latest episode focuses on “The Sounds of Apple” and follows the origins of several ringtones. Two of them, “Daybreak” and “Chalet,” were credited to Steve Ellison — A.K.A. Flying Lotus.

Apple promoted the new podcast this week and tagged Flying Lotus in their social copy — FlyLo then retweeted the promo, confirming his once-secret work for the company. “Apple leaked it so I can say it,” Flying Lotus wrote on Twitter. “I wrote some ringtones that have been in ur iPhone since ios13. ‘Daybreak’ +‘Chalet.
