Rap veteran Chino Xl died at his home on Sunday morning at the age of 50. In his lifetime, the artist born Derek Keith Barbosa connected closely with collaborators and friends who often considered him family. Fellow musicians Chuck D, Sage Francis, Czarface, and more are paying tribute to the prominent hip-hop figure in the wake of his death.

“This ones a tough one,” Chuck D wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “@Chinoxl was my brother in rhyme & art. He encouraged my graphics forward. We exchanged art books. He looked out to protect my lyric books better.

It was Sage Francis who quoted Kurt Vonnegut who paraphrased John Greenleaf Whittier when he declared “of all the words of mice and men the saddest are ‘it might have been'” in his 2014 song “Vonnegut Busy.” Despite who originated this oft-used declaration, the truth remains that few things are sadder in life than a missed opportunity.

The Plumbus is probably the second-most iconic thingy to come out of the second season. The combination of co-creator Justin Roiland ad-libbing a slew of nonsense words and the artists figuring out how to depict those various nonsenses makes for what’s essentially an episode of How It’s Made about an imaginary alien doohickey with no clear discernible function.

American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn't belong at big festivals? C'mon, Noel.

Well, we'll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee's Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts, indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish.

In the indie rap world, Michael "Eyedea" Larsen was seen by some as the underground Eminem. The talented Midwestern rapper and turntablist, who recorded under the name Eyedea for the Rhymesayers label, died suddenly over the weekend at his St. Paul, Minnesota, home at age 28.

His mother announced Larsen's passing — a cause of death was not given at press time — writing on the Mc's Facebook page, "It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away ... At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. We do, however, welcome your kind words, memories, and positive thoughts." The family has set up a PayPal account for donations to pay for the cost of funeral services.

In the decade or so since Eminem first appeared on the scene with his debut album The Slim Shady LP, he has changed the music game in more ways than one. His breakthrough 2000 release The Marshall Mathers LP paved the way for edgier hip-hop to live at the top of the Billboard album chart. He bridged the gap between the worlds of mainstream pop (he was a staple on "Total Request Live" with the likes of Britney Spears and 98 Degrees), pure hip-hop (he was a well-respected freestylist who associated with Dr. Dre) and the more aggro side of the rock world (his songs were often played on modern rock radio and would often tour with guitar bands). The music industry is changing. Anybody who's been paying attention to the past 10 years should know that. There are controversies to how the record labels react to technology's role, especially that of the internet's, in diminishing the respect towards copyrighted materials. Namely, their efforts in suing the fans for disproportionate amounts of money, more as a threat for others than a real hunt for justice.

Interesting to note—and this hourlong documentary serves as a reminder—that the fight had already begun about a decade or two earlier; started, not surprisingly, by emerging hip hop artists of the time.
