Believe it or not, it's already been five years since cameras checked in on the three units living together in suburban Los Angeles in ABC's Modern Family. The smash-hit sitcom dominated the airwaves from 2009 through 2020, scoring 22 Emmy wins and becoming one of the most successful live-action comedy series on broadcast television ever. Since its final season premiered, however, the show has been a constant presence on streaming, drawing in viewers who wanted to revisit the Pritchetts, Dunphys, and Tuckers once again. Now, the series is once again enjoying an international surge on Disney+, rising to sixth in the world and keeping ahead of both Bluey and Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, the creators of Modern Family, made a deliberate creative choice that made their sitcom stand out in a genre that was populated by hits like Everybody Loves Raymond. So, what was the difference between them? The children in the hit 1996 sitcom were just props who existed to remind viewers that the main characters were parents. But Modern Family decided to treat the children like characters who are central to the storytelling.
When Modern Family arrived in 2009, the family sitcom genre had almost vanished from the TV landscape. That genre had been replaced with titles that were comedy but had a bend of cynicism. So, creators like Levitan and Lloyd thought of a way that would bring the family sitcom genre back and also help it stand out in a landscape where it had lost its place. Their decision was clearly right because Modern Family was a hit,...

Modern Family is my breakfast show, you know what I mean? I watch it every day with breakfast, to set the tone for the rest of the day. That’s how much I love and revere every character in it. When I heard the news of the Modern Family spinoff being cancelled, I had bittersweet feelings about it.
I would have been excited about seeing Mitch and Cam in the Missouri setup, but I would have missed the rest of the family a lot. Let’s get into what happened and why the Mitch and Cam story, which was so close to being developed, didn’t happen.
Modern Family Spin-off: The Missouri Poster Boys That Got Cancelled Before They Began
Modern Family finally said goodbye to grieving fans in the year 2020, with Mitch(Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) moving to Missouri to be with Cam’s side of the family.

Alex has been a star during the whole run-through of the Hulu show Modern Family. We believe that she’s beautiful with brains and the only responsible person who knows exactly what and why something has to be done.
But, here’s the twist: the makers completely forgot the characters’ backstory, putting a major inconsistency in later seasons. Especially in Season 11, a brief moment occurs when Alex returns from Antarctica when a stray follows her, and she shooes it away. It was because she is allergic to cats.
However, in the previous episodes, she is seen cuddling Ben’s cat. And particularly in Season 6, to hide from a date, Alex is seen feeding them. This cites the irregularity of the show. Let’s dissect what the point was when the makers decided to throw this angle for Alex.

Imagine yourself being seen as dumb when you’re the smartest person in the room. Blimey! The same was the case on Modern Family’s hilarious sets. You might remember Phil Dunphy’s son, the “dumbest” on the show. What if I told you that the actor portraying the character has an Iq of over 150, is a member of Mensa, and has graduated from college in his teen years? That’s Nolan Gould for you all.
In an interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine back in 2010, Nolan revealed about the character he played and jokingly addressed portraying a dumb character on-screen.
“Dumb is not a hard thing to do (laughs). But, I’m a member of Mensa, so sometimes dumb is a hard thing to play. I do like to play Luke because he’s pretty different from me.”
He further continued about the character saying,

When Modern Family arrived in 2009, it took the sitcom world by storm with its diverse characters, sharp writing and mockumentary-style of storytelling. The pilot episode established the characters, their dynamics with each other, and how they formed a “modern” family. However, everything behind-the-scenes wasn’t as seamlessly executed as it seemed on screen.
One of the major characters of the show, Haley Dunphy, wasn’t cast till almost the last minute. This meant that there was a secret reshoot that most Modern Family fans aren’t aware of. Viewers loved Sarah Hyland as Haley for all of the 11 seasons of the show. However, she wasn’t the one the makers had in mind for the role. This was because Haley was a 15-year-old in the show while Hyland was 18 at that time.

Turns out, Modern Family wasn’t always this… modern. From casting chaos to health scares, this behind-the-scenes drama might just rival the sitcom itself.
Ever imagined someone else as Jay Pritchett? Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston was once considered. And Sofia Vergara role made her one of TV’s richest, but there were early concerns about her accent and comedic timing. It got deeper, Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s on-screen adoption arc mirrored tough real-life conversations in the writers’ room. After 11 seasons, they really were like family… though that family almost looked very different.
And the finale was not everyone felt it landed just right. Some crew members expected a bigger goodbye. These lesser-known bits prove it, only true Modern Family fans know these 10 hardcore facts.

Modern Family was considered a progressive show during its time on air, but it still received criticism sometimes for its gay characters.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson played one of those characters - the uptight lawyer Mitchell Pritchett - and he's opened up recently about the criticism that was leveled at him in particular. Ferguson is gay himself, but not everyone liked his portrayal of Mitchell. He spoke about it on his popular podcast Dinner's On Me.
"One of the pressures I've always felt, specifically after being on a show like Modern Family, where I'm portraying a gay man on a television show, on a network that is as popular as it is," the actor said, "you receive criticism, as you do, with anything you do, but the criticism that I think I heard the loudest was always from the gay community, feeling as if, maybe, I didn't represent their idea of what a gay relationship was,...

Modern Family may have wrapped in April 2020, but the cast still lives rent-free in our heads. From Julie Bowen’s seemingly ageless glow to one actor who’s pulling off the “finest wine” transformation like a pro, the glow-ups (and glow-steady cases) are real.

When you have a favorite television series, especially one that goes on for so long, you get invested in everything about it. From the story, to the characters, and even the cast. We always like to hear good things about the relationships between co-stars, otherwise sometimes it becomes a bit tainted. And unfortunately, we do end up learning that some actors didn't get along or aren't close anymore. Thankfully when it comes to Modern Family, it looks like all the cast members are still close. And there's two in particular who are besties.
In an interview with People recently, Ariel Winter who played Alex Dunphy shared that she and her TV younger brother Nolan Gould (Luke Dunphy) are "extremely close" and "still best friends," to this day. Aw, this comment just warms our hearts! It definitely put a smile on my face.

First airing in 2009 and never looking back, Modern Family is a mockumentary-style comedy series about one big, chaotic, endlessly relatable extended family. Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the show follows the lives of three wildly different households all linked by the Pritchett clan—think awkward dad jokes, too-honest kids, and of course, family drama to fuel several group chats. From over-the-top birthday parties to questionable parenting choices caught on camera, Modern Family turns everyday family life into a hilarious, heartwarming documentary we’re all low-key glad isn’t about our own relatives.

When Modern Family launched in 2009, the kids on the show were not just young, they were undeniably adorable and packed with humor. With their unique wits, naughty antics, and heartwarming portrayals, they captured the audience’s hearts and dominated the spotlight. However, as the show progressed, many fans began to notice a troubling trend. The child characters suffered significant declines in their development.

All of the child actors grew up in the show and in front of the cameras. However, the transition from childhood to adolescence remains one of the show’s biggest missteps. Instead of evolving the characters in a way that felt natural, they were reduced to some stereotypical characters that lost their charm. While it may be a comedy show, the way the show handled its young cast members raises typical questions about the writers’ ability to craft a good arc for these growing stars.

Nolan Gould masterfully played the role of Luke in Modern Family for over a decade. As such, fans practically got to see him grow up in the show. While this should have pleased the fans all the more and made him a fan-favorite character, fate wasn’t by Gould’s side.

Unfortunately, instead of growing up to be a goofy, yet respectful teen, he turned into a horribly misogynistic character very quickly. Fans obviously had a hard time coping with that sudden shift from that mischievous little boy.
Interestingly, though, for all the hate Luke gets for these reasons, Sarah Hyland’s Haley got away with similar traits with almost no such consequences from Modern Family fans.

From LGBTQ+ characters and complex parenthood to adulting troubles and relationship issues, the show had it all. But that’s not to say that Modern Family was without some problematic elements.

However, filming it hasn’t always been a piece of cake. Marc Freeman’s book about the show, which featured interviews from the cast and crew, noted a similar incident where there wasn’t a dry eye left on set during the filming of a scene.
Moreover, showrunner Steven Levitan, too, noted how everybody became so emotional for that particular scene. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before that scene turned into reality breaking everyone’s hearts.

He played Luke Dunphy, the youngest and most mischievous member of the Dunphy family, who was known for his goofy personality and hilarious one-liners. But as the seasons went on, viewers started to notice something different about him.

Despite its beloved characters and captivating plotlines, Modern Family has often received criticism concerning how it developed several of its characters. One such character also includes Haley Dunphy, portrayed by Sarah Hyland in the sitcom.
Modern Family | Credit: ABC
Haley Dunphy is introduced as a typical teenager with a keen interest in fashion, popularity, and boys rather than academics or career ambitions. However, she experiences significant growth, as she pursues her passion for fashion and styling while working toward getting her life together.
But as the show progressed, much of this development takes a backseat with her getting back with her on-again-off-again boyfriend Dylan, getting pregnant, and eventually marrying him, a turn of events that has left many fans disappointed.

Known for its beloved characters, Modern Family has received significant criticism concerning the evolution of its child characters, particularly Manny and Luke. Fans of the show have long noted how these characters gradually lost their charm as the show progressed.

While there is significant criticism for the showrunners turning Manny into an awkward and overly eccentric version of himself, Luke Dunphy’s character arc has also sparked disappointment, with the show leading him into unexpected and underwhelming directions by the series finale.

There’s an old adage that goes, “You can’t unring a bell,” and when it comes to certain storylines on television, sometimes it feels like there’s no turning back after that bell tolls. Modern Family, that beloved sitcom about the lovable, zany, and often dysfunctional Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan, managed to win over hearts across the globe for over a decade. It seemed like a slam dunk, right? It had everything: quirky characters, snappy one-liners, and an irreverent look at family dynamics.

One particular storyline that never sat right with viewers was the inexplicable romantic tension between Manny Delgado and Haley Dunphy. From their start as innocent, albeit awkward, peers to the evolution of their dynamic was like watching a car crash in slow motion. It wasn’t just awkward; it was unsettling. The best Millie Bobby Brown movies and TV shows feature a strong mix of genre favorites. What is most impressive about Brown’s career is that she hasn’t appeared in many TV shows or movies in her young career, but most of the young star’s appearances have been massive releases. Born in Spain, she made her debut in the Once Upon a Time spinoff Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, where she played young Alice. She then had several small roles in episodes of popular TV shows before finally getting her big break.
That came in 2016 when she picked up the role of Eleven in Stranger Things. Brown was only 12 years old when she started playing Eleven, but she became one of the top names on the Netflix fantasy series, and that role made her a star. She moved on to another giant franchise on the big screen...

Jesse Tyler Ferguson became well-known for his Emmy-nominated performance as Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family, and recently shared a touching memory of the late Matthew Perry in an episode of his Podcast Dinner's On Me. The podcast episode, which featured Friends star Lisa Kudrow, briefly touched on Perry, with Ferguson sharing an anecdote from the early days of his career. Highlighting Perry's inherent kindness and charm, Ferguson described an anxiety-filled moment on set before Perry helped to soothe his nerves.
Ferguson recalled his experience filming the sitcom The Class in 2006, in which the taping of the episode he was in that day was a more stressful environment than usual. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Julie Bowen playing Claire Dunphy in Modern Family, but Judy Greer almost did. The character actor and Arrested Development vet recently revealed that she was asked to audition for the role of Claire in the hit ABC sitcom, but she turned it down for a very specific reason.
Claire Dunphy was the matriarch of the Dunphy household in Modern Family, looking after her lovably childish husband, Phil (Ty Burell), and their three children, Haley (Sarah Hyland), Alex (Ariel Winter), and Luke (Nolan Gould). Bowen has since become synonymous with the role. After more than 15 years, Judy Greer is reflecting on her decision not to audition for Modern Family.
The actress recently noted that she “didn’t even want kids” at the time, so the opportunity to play mom Claire Dunphy (which ultimately went to Julie Bowen) on the ABC sitcom and become “America’s mom” wasn’t appealing to her.
“This was a time in my career when I was starting to [play moms],” she told Bowen’s co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his Dinner’s On Me podcast.
“It sounds so silly to say it out loud now, but I’ll be honest. In a movie, I would have a kid. And then there was this opportunity to audition where I would have three kids, one of them in high school,” added Greer. “And on a TV show… and you do have to think of these things in success, and obviously Modern Family was a huge success.

Modern Family was a sitcom game-changer which embraced a broader concept of family. While the show was a massive hit with fans during its 11 season run, Julie Bowen didn't think she had what it took to land the role of Claire Dunphy.
During an appearance on The Three Questions with Andy Richter Podcast, Bowen recalled how baffled she was when her agents mentioned Modern Family. "I was like, 'I can't tell a joke, I'm not funny, don't give me those three-jokes-a-page kind of things," she said before explain that her team had more faith in her ability than she did. "My managers were always very supportive, like, 'You know what? Helen Hunt isn't funny.' I go, 'What?' They're like, 'Not technically.' [So] I said, 'She just won like five Emmys.' They're like, 'Yes. So she's funny in a different way. She's not three-jokes-a-page funny. And yet she is wildly funny.

Four years after the end of Modern Family on ABC, actor Eric Stonestreet is reflecting on the spinoff that didn't come to be. While Stonestreet was hoping to co-star in a spinoff alongside Jesse Tyler Ferguson which would have followed Cam and Mitch, the series was passed on by the network.
Per Deadline, Stonestreet discussed his desired Modern Family spinoff during an interview with Graham Bensinger. The actor recalled how there were plans to potentially develop a Cam and Mitch spinoff starting with a pilot script Stonestreet felt was really strong. Ultimately, the series was not picked up, a decision that Stonestreet suggested could be due to the perception that he and Ferguson were "the old guys," and thus undeserving of their own spinoff.
