Sony Pictures Classics is out with Jane Austen Wrecked My Life in limited release, Angel Studios’ The Last Rodeo opens wide and A24’s Friendship added screens with few new indies braving the double whammy of live action Lilo & Stitch and Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning.
The former may have set a Disney record for Memorial Day weekend previews, Deadline reports, while Tom Cruise’s high octane eighth outing as Ethan Hunt may have set a record preview night for a Mission: Impossible.
Jane Austen in her own right “has become a bit of a rock star in the marketplace,” SPC brass rightly noted when the distributor acquired the feature debut by Laura Piani ahead of its TIFF world premiere last year. It’s opening on 61 screens in select markets including Lincoln Square and Angelika Film Center in New York and the AMC Grove and Laemmle Royal in LA.

I'll be the first to admit that, when it comes to horror movies, I'm a bit of a wimp. When I was a kid, "The Exorcist" was re-released, and the TV commercials gave me nightmares for several weeks. With that said, a movie like Josh Ruben's "Heart Eyes" is approachable even for scared little babies like me, which makes it utterly unsurprising that the movie is performing quite well on Netflix, according to FlixPatrol.
"Heart Eyes" came out on February 7, 2025 — and now that its theatrical release is finished, it's found a home on Netflix and is getting a lot of attention ... as it should! The horror-romance hybrid centers on Ally McCabe (Olivia Holt), a young woman who works for a jewelry company and, fresh off a breakup, ends up meeting consulting advertiser Jay Simmons (Mason Gooding) in a professional context ... only for sparks to quickly fly. However, things go...

Many of us thought that Ryan Gosling had reached his peak heartthrob era in 2004, as Noah in The Notebook. But we couldn’t be more wrong. Because with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the man just stole the show and reclaimed his heartthrob era. Well, now, Gosling seems to be leveling up with some major movie magic coming in 2025, and beyond.
From zooming through space to joining the Star Wars fam, and even collaborating with Margot Robbie to pull off slick heists in an Ocean’s Eleven prequel, Ryan Gosling seems to be setting the bar high. Also, this man’s range deserves its own Oscar. So, let’s dive into the Gosling-verse and mark those calendars.

CinemaCon 2025 keeps truckin’, and tonight, we have a presentation from Amazon! The studio’s been in the news lately with speculation about the future of the James Bond franchise, exciting new titles coming to Prime Video, and more. Tonight’s showcase began with a trailer for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s Project Hail Mary, a dystopian sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, Milana Vayntrub, and Sandra Hüller.
Project Hail Mary is based on a book by Andy Weir, and our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, says the movie looks very much like The Martian. Gosling is a high school teacher recruited on a mission to save the planet. The difference is a lot of it is him preparing for a suicide mission. The trailer includes a lot of comedy but also has a considerable scale. The footage shows Gosling on his mission alone as he grows a huge beard. The film looks...

Amazon MGM Studios kicked off its first CinemaCon slate with something truly big, the first look at “Project Hail Mary,” Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s sci-fi epic starring Ryan Gosling.
In the extended trailer that opened Amazon MGM’s presentation, Gosling plays a middle school teacher brought in to help stop the sun from dying, ultimately forcing him to embark on an impossible quest into deep space, farther than anyone has ever gone, in order to keep not just the Sun from dying, but also every other star in the galaxy. Suffice it to say, he’s reluctant, telling Sandra Hüller that he puts the “not in astronaut.”
The trailer has incredible outer space effects and shows him meeting an alien, who Lord described as Rocky, “the most lovable alien since E.T.”

For the last five years, a cinematic adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary has been in the works. The production has hit several roadbumps on its way from page to screen, but tonight, audiences at CinemaCon were the lucky ones to be the first to feast their eyes on footage of the Ryan Gosling (Barbie)-led film. It’s been a long road, but the dynamite team led by co-directors and producers, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, have seemingly nailed the project, which was adapted for the screen by Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and High Potentialcreator, Drew Goddard.
Here’s what we saw.
Ryan Gosling is a brainy elementary teacher who has the answers that the professionals need in the trailer for Project Hail Mary. The government recruits the teacher to help with Project Hail Mary, as the sun — and many other stars — are beginning to die.

In an effort to raise money for families of color displaced by the recent Los Angeles wildfires, actor and comedian Milana Vayntrub is going much farther than a GoFundMe.
Rising to fame a decade ago as “the AT&T girl” featured prominently in commercials for the telecom giant, Vayntrub recently launched OnlyPhilanthropy – a kind of spoof of the ubiquitous adult content platform OnlyFans – where she’s sharing “flirty” photos in exchange for cash for victims.
Though she is not providing nudes, Vayntrub says the project hopes to “use the male gaze to fight the blaze.” One such flirty pic will run you $69, with tiers for more. Heart Eyes disembowels Valentine's Day in a grisly laugh riot that mocks romantic comedies. The tongue in cheek slasher flick takes an Olympic dive through tired horror genre tropes and comes up for air with a devilish grin. The film doesn't take itself seriously, acknowledges absurdity with slivers of clever dialogue, and then doubles down on the carnage to fill fandom's expected gore quota. The plot makes zero sense outside the overall premise, but that's not entirely detrimental. Fantastic chemistry between capable leads keeps your attention when common sense attempts to overtake the bloody fun.

Jean-Paul Sartre is known for the brutally honest aphorism “hell is other people.” While the French philosopher was likely referring to social interaction and fears of forced extroversion, he could just as easily have been thinking of life in a small town. These tiny burgs offer the illusion of isolation—along with picturesque scenery—but more often than not they become breeding grounds for all types of strange behavior. For those who've only known an existence with home gaming consoles, it might feel wild to realize that the video game movie genre is still quite young. The first movie to be based on a pre-existing video game was Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel's mangled-by-studio-interference adaptation of "Super Mario Bros.," a massive box office flop that caused studios to tap the brakes on future excursions in this newfangled genre. While 1995's sensibly budgeted "Mortal Kombat" turned a sizable profit for New Line, video game movies weren't viewed as potential blockbusters by the studios until "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" grossed $275 million worldwide in 2001. The floodgates opened over the next decade, but the movies were, with very few exceptions (Paul W.S. Anderson's first "Resident Evil" and Christophe Gans' "Silent Hill"), about as bad as movies get.

Over the years, Marvel Comics has done incredible work to create a deeply memorable roster of both superheroes and villains. It’s been genuinely exciting to watch many of these beloved characters transition over to blockbuster feature films. Similarly, lower-tier heroes have been able to find newfound acclaim thanks to the success of their movies.
There are many popular Marvel characters fans are eager to see get their own films, but there are also some deep cuts who deserve their moment in the spotlight. The MCU movies and TV shows have already found success with some less popular characters, so there's hope that even some of the most obscure can find their way to the big or small screens.
Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on December 19, 2024: The Multiverse Saga's ending is drawing near, with Secret Wars promising to set the MCU on a new and exciting path forward as new heroes join the franchise.

A Marvel actor has recently returned for the fourth time, and it’s finally time for the studio to make her character officially part of the MCU. Marvel has spent over two decades developing the MCU into a well-respected franchise, and its success has meant that more heroes get to be in the spotlight. There is no shortage of niche characters from Marvel Comics, and having the substantial fanbase that they have means that the MCU can take bigger risks with the characters who get projects.

Many players were introduced to the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl through Marvel Rivals, and they might be wondering why she is so strong.
Marvel Television almost gave general audiences greater exposure to this character in 2018 with a New Warriors series, which would have starred Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl. Unfortunately, despite a seemingly exciting pilot episode, the series failed to get picked up for a full season order.
Over the years, Vayntrub's initial casting wasn't wasted, as she quickly became the go-to voice for Doreen Green in cartoons and video games. She was even perfectly cast as Squirrel Girl again in Marvel Rivals.

Marvel seems to come back to one actress over and over again, although they have yet to appear in live action. Marvel has been around for a long time, but its popularity on the big screen has peaked over the last two decades. With the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel has had the opportunity to shine a light on dozens of the lesser known characters from its extensive roster in a variety of mediums.
This has been an outstanding factor in bringing the nerdy and geeky world of comics into the mainstream. However, even the McU's success has struggled to keep the largest franchise cinematic universe going on just the big screen, and Marvel has leaned in to producing more cartoons and video games to buoy up the diverse portfolio of content. But earlier in the run, there was one Marvel TV show that was greenlit for 10 episodes,...

‘Marvel Rivals’ will launch on December 6, 2024. Some new characters were added to the game and now we have a list of what we think are the full 33 characters coming.
The game will be a free-to-play 6 v 6 third-person hero shooter released for Microsoft, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
There will be 33 playable characters, including: Adam Warlock Black Panther Black Widow Captain America Cloak and Dagger Doctor Strange Groot Hawkeye Hela Hulk Iron Fist Iron Man Jeff the Land Shark Loki Luna Snow Magik Magneto Mantis Moon Knight Namor Peni Parker Psylocke Punisher Rocket Raccoon Scarlet Witch Spider-Man[a] Squirrel Girl Star-Lord Storm Thor Venom Winter Soldier Wolverine
There are some really popular characters in the roster. I’m excited that Squirrel Girl is going to be done by Milana Vayntrub. She was supposed to play her on screen, too, but that didn’t work out. She would have been perfect for the character.

With Netflix still experiencing a staggering response to “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the streamer dropped another title on the same subject: “The Menendez Brothers,” a documentary directed by Alejandro Hartmann and featuring exclusive interviews with Lyle and Erik from prison.
Viewers familiar with the life and trials of Lyle and Erik Menendez will hear familiar recollections of old headlines; about the night they murdered their parents in 1989, the spending spree they went on before getting arrested, the dual trial and hung juries, and the allegations of abuse in their home. Hartmann and his team collected over 20 hours of interviews with the Menendez brothers while they serve life sentences in federal prison, as well as new interviews with family members, reporters, jury members, and lead prosecutor on the first trials, Pam Bozanich.

Bad Shabbos explores a dysfunctional family dinner by going to thrilling and comedic extremes. The cast of Bad Shabbos boasts a number of talented actors, including Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Bass. The movie has received positive feedback for its hilarious script, talented cast, and fun, collaborative set atmosphere.
Bad Shabbos, which premiered at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, takes the concept of a dysfunctional family sitting down for dinner to thrilling and comedic extremes. Set in the well-heeled part of New York’s Upper West Side Jewish community, Tribeca Festival audience award winner “Bad Shabbos” is an entertaining, fast-paced comedy about a Sabbath dinner gone terribly awry. After four previous indie features, director Daniel Robbins should score wider distribution with this tender look at several generations of modern Jews trying to balance the polarities of secular and religious lives, along with the dilemma of a dead body in the bathroom. Robbins and his longtime co-writer Zack Weiner up the comedy ante by stirring in several dysfunctional family dramas, an inter-faith culture clash and an intrepid doorman. A strong ensemble cast nails the tasty dialogue and increasingly frantic action without falling into shtick.

Quick Links The Location Is Key in Bad Shabbos Bad Shabbos Has a Lackluster Climax Bad Shabbos offers a darkly comic take on family dynamics during the Sabbath but falls flat with a predictable ending. Talented veteran actors add humor to the mix, but the film struggles to resonate beyond those familiar with Jewish traditions. Location plays a crucial role in the film's antics, but the lackluster climax fails to deliver true comedic satisfaction.
Shabbos is the Yiddish word for the Sabbath, where observant Jews rest, dine, and celebrate their faith with family from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. Bad Shabbos adds accidental murder to the equation in a darkly comic religious romp that quickly runs out of steam. A talented cast of veteran actors squeeze every drop of humor from the schtick. And then bandy about in strained, hand-wringing anxiety to a predictable conclusion that was broadcast in the literal opening.

Bad Shabbos blends comedy and suspense seamlessly, turning a family dinner into chaos after a guest's death. Director Daniel Robbins infuses horror elements into comedy, inspired by classics like Meet The Parents. Stars Kyra Sedgwick and Cliff Smith bring genuine heart and humor to their roles, elevating the film's comedic stylings.
A family comes together for Shabbat dinner in Bad Shabbos, which just premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, including David and his recently-converted-to-Judaism fiance Meg. While the biggest pressure of the night is originally introducing Meg's parents to David's family, things take a turn when one of the guests dies. Questions of accident or murder permeate the air as the evening devolves into chaos as the family tries to figure out what to do.

As if their weekly shabbat gathering wasn’t already a reason for them to all start kvetching, imagine what happens when a Jewish family from Manhattan’s Upper West Side accidentally murders one of their dinner guests. Or when their future and very goy-ish in-laws try to pronounce the word “chutzpah.” Or when the Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man shows up wearing a yarmulke.

Unlike their golden run on the big screen till phase 3, Marvel didn’t quite replicate its huge success on the small screen, with most of the Disney Plus MCU shows earning less-than-stellar reception. While fans have complained about MCU’s recent catalog being bloated following the abundance of TV shows, Marvel has also abandoned an overwhelming number of TV shows over the years.
This involves several renowned superheroes, including a Captain Britain show, which was greenlit long before the rise of Disney Plus and MCU TV shows.

Back in 2016, rumors regarding a Captain Britain show being in the early stages of development emerged. Poster artist Clara McAvoy claimed she was being paid to do a promo poster for it, assuring fans an official announcement might be heading our way in early 2017 or late 2016. Unfortunately, it never happened, leading many to speculate Marvel might have put the kibosh on it.

Milana Vayntrub, the actress behind the popular AT&T commercial character Lily, has opened up about facing online sexual harassment and how she received support from fellow commercial star Stephanie Courtney, aka Flo from Progressive. In a new profile from the New York Times, Vayntrub recalled how she first auditioned for the character of Lily, an upbeat AT&T employee, when she was 26 years old and “dressed like I imagined a friendly girl would dress.” She became the face of the telecommunications company between 2013 and 2016 before taking a hiatus. However, she revived the character in 2020 during the pandemic, which she revealed was her own idea. “This time, Lily would be working from home. AT&T greenlit the proposal. Vayntrub directed the spots herself. She filmed the national ads in her own house, recreating Lily’s hair and makeup herself under the remote supervision of a professional,” the Times profile states. Courtney contacted Vayntrub by phone when the online abuse was at its worse. Courtney was empathetic, and Vayntrub recalled that Courtney was a good listener. Talking to her peer made Vayntrub feel “like there were people on my team,” she said in the Times story.
In August of 2020, Vayntrub posted an Instagram livestream asking that the online harassment against her stop.

The program joins the ranks of ABC’s “The View,” which also returned. “The Talk,” “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” have all announced their intention to return before the strike ends; they can expect the same treatment.
All daytime talk shows are not created equally as far as the WGA is concerned. “Tamron Hall,” “Live with Kelly and Mark,” and “Sherri” don’t employ WGA writers and should have cleaner comebacks. Of course, they still can’t have actor or writer guests promoting their films or TV shows. (SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14; the WGA strike started May 2.)

Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel
Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.
Funny… but only just
And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.
With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.
Movie Review
A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.
It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.
Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

Director Marie Alice Wolfszahn’s Mother Superior has taken best feature in the main competition at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival with the abortion-focused anthology Give Me An A garnering the Gold Audience Award during the seventh edition of the festival.
Other main competition jury prize winners at Bhff, which ran from Oct. 13-20 with events held in Williamsburg and Prospect Park, included Wolfszahn for best director, Megalomaniac’s Eline Schumacher for best performance and a special jury mention for the Paolo Strippoli-directed Flowing.
The main competition jury, which was comprised of filmmaker Zach Clark, HuffPost Senior Culture Editor Candice Frederick and author Kate Robertson, lauded Mother Superior — a directorial debut from the Austrian Wolfszahn — as “a thoughtfully crafted folk story exploring the völkisch occult with a captivating aesthetic indebted to the gothic tradition and tight editing, each frame carefully considered.”

Hollywood has been trying to bring video games to the big screen since the mid-'90s and, admittedly, the results have been mixed. Sure, we've had franchises like "Resident Evil" pretty consistently do well at the box office, but what's been missing for most of that time is honest-to-God critical acclaim. But the tide has been turning in recent years with movies like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu." However, the tide turned dramatically in terms of acclaim in 2021 with the release of "Werewolves Within."
Based on the Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment Oculus game of the same name, director Josh Ruben's low-budget werewolf flick currently boasts a stellar 86 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it far and away the best-reviewed video game movie ever. So, how did Ruben do what nobody else could with a mere 6.5 million budget? I had the chance to speak with Ruben recently...

Over the course of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," True Believers have been introduced to a number of interesting, obscure, and unforgettable characters. We have yet to meet Frog Man at this point in the show, but appearances from the Wrecking Crew, Titania, and Madisynn King (with Wongers) have certainly held us over until that day finally arrives. However, in the latest episode of the Disney+ series from Jessica Gao, the show makes the deepest cut to date and pulls out one of the most obtuse characters in all of the Marvel Universe and utilizes him in an absolutely hilarious way.
While Jennifer Walters is off at her high school friend's wedding, Nikki Ramos and Mallory Book are left to deal with a superhuman divorce case. Although, this assignment proves to be more difficult than anticipated when their client possesses the ability of immortality. So when it's revealed that he's a...
