Impressive Cast for David O. Russell's Abscam Project Adds Jennifer Lawrence
David O. Russell is gathering quite a troupe of actors as of late as he will reunite with his Oscar-winning star of The Fighter and the two stars of his Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook along with several others for his next film, which is currently untitled, but has been referred to in the past as American Bullsh*t. Today Deadline announced Silver Linings star and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence has joined the cast that already starred her fellow Oscar nominee and Silver Linings co-star Bradley Cooper, as well as Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams and Louis C.K. Yeah, not too shabby. The film, written by Eric Singer, centers on the 1970s FBI sting operation called Abscam, which led to the conviction of a United States Senator, five members of the House of Representatives, one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, and an...

Michael Bailey Talks Award-Winning Horror Anthology 'Chiral Mad'
Michael Bailey is the author of the collection Scales and Petals, and he is the editor of a new anthology titled Chiral Mad. Chiral gathers together some of the finest names in horror, as well as some newer writers, and has been well-received. For FEARnet, Michael explains the concept behind Chiral Mad and his love for psychological horror.

You have a new anthology out, Chiral Mad. What's the theme and what does the title mean?

Chiral Mad is an anthology of psychological horror. The theme can be derived from the title. Chirality is a word used to describe an object incapable of superimposing onto its mirror image. In fiction, this can flower many original concepts, which was the intention. What is chiral? Think hands and put them together. Hands look similar, one able to press against the other symmetrically, but they have idiosyncrasies setting them apart: length, scars, fingerprints, any number of things.

TV Fanatic Staff Round Table: Spinoffs We Want to See
The word is out: A Boy Meets World spinoff is in the works at The Disney Channel.

In reaction to the news, our staff first popped some champagne - and then stopped to wonder: What other shows would we love to see rebooted?

We answer that questions (sometimes seriously, sometimes less so) in the following TV Fanatic Round Table. Read our responses and then jump in with your own...

Matt Richenthal: Saved by the Cell. Screech gets imprisoned for trying to peddle the Dustin Diamond sex tape at Bayside, only for his life to be resurrected behind bars when he reconnects with AC Slater, who is serving time for steroid distribution.

Carissa Pavlica: The Wonder Years. It would be cool too see what happened with Kevin, Paul, Winnie and the gang, especially since they grew up in the 60s.Where are they now? What have their kids become? It could...

Exclusive Interview with Asif Kapadia – Director of Senna
Senna is released next Monday 10th October DVD and Blu-ray and I still stand firm in my belief that it’s not only the best documentary that I’ve seen all year, but the greatest film that I’ve seen all year.

Senna is based on the professional Formula One racing life of quite possibly the greatest driver that ever lived, Ayrton Senna. The movie focuses on his life after transitioning from karting into one the world’s most prestigious sports. It doesn’t matter if you know nothing about Formula One, everyone needs to see this movie. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll be taken on a spectacular journey for 90 minutes.

The film is directed by Asif Kapadia who undertook the huge project of bringing this amazing story to the big screen. It has been winning awards left, right and centre at film festivals and now...

Lech Majewski's "The Mill and the Cross"
"Pieter Bruegel packed his 16th-century Passion painting, The Way to Calvary, with hundreds of figures based on his own contemporaries, conflating the persecution of Christ with the Spanish occupation that raged outside his studio," begins Eric Hynes in Time Out New York. "In a feat of artistry worthy of its source, Polish director Lech Majewski (Gospel According to Harry) takes us deep inside the Flemish master's beautiful nightmare, bringing to life dozens of the work's characters, from carousing peasants and murderous redcoats to the painter himself — uncannily embodied by former replicant and shotgun-wielding hobo Rutger Hauer. While Bruegel's painting told a story, Majewski's film is a deconstruction of said tale, forsaking traditional narrative structures for a series of authoritatively realized tableaux."

"Adapted from a book by the art critic Michael Francis Gibson, who wrote the screenplay with Mr Majewski, the film does not offer much plot," notes Daniel M Gold in the New York Times.

AfterElton Briefs: Scott Herman Joins The Trevor Project, Danny Miller Wins Big, and Stephen Colbert Takes On Dadt
Happy Birthday, Kier!

The United States of Tara's Kier Gilchrist turns 18-years-old today. He also has a movie coming out next week called It's Kind of a Funny Story, in which he's in a psych ward (which is ironic since he's the sanest member of his TV family). Here we have his mother, played by Lauren Graham explaining to him he has to stay committed.

NOMExposed has launched today to help show the money trail and the power players in the anti-equality movement. Unfortunately, the site has suffered time issues all day, so I can't give much of a review yet. Hackers have published what's being called a definitive list of terms that Google Instant censors. There are a lot of Glbt specific terms on the list, and some activists are upset. but as someone who has to search the Internet with SafeSearch off, I know that innocent terms can produce profane results.

Episode Recap: True Blood - 3.09: "Everything Is Broken"
The last episode of True Blood (TV) ended in a flurry of violence. Honestly, what episode doesn't have it's quota of blood, gore, and naked bodies? Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) staked Talbot (Theo Alexander), while Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) fed off the werewolves attacking Sookie (Anna Paquin) at her house. And then we were forced to endure yet another Sookie and Bill (Stephen Moyer) sex-fest while they gyrated around on the floor like a couple of canines in heat. Seriously, it took a week for me to scrub that image out of my brain (sorry Sookie/Bill lovers). Truth or consequence time. Actually it's more consequences with very little truth thrown into the mix. The Authority -- aka vampire department of justice -- has sent their spokeswoman, Nan Flanagan (Jessica Tuck) to Eric's bar to find out what's happened to the Magister. Eric tells Nan everything about his search for...

Michael Jackson's Death: Looking Back On An Intense 24 Hours In The MTV Newsroom
A full year has elapsed since the world lost legendary pop star Michael Jackson. His death had an immediate effect on millions of people worldwide, and not only was it a definitive pop culture moment but also a piece of hard news that most of the networks covered like a major election or a natural disaster. It required everybody here in the MTV Newsroom to be on high alert and to play their best game (which they absolutely did, from the moment the first rumors about the ambulance arriving at Jackson's house all the way up to the stories breaking today).

June 25, 2009 started off like any other Thursday, with the usual slate of news stories. The biggest thing mentioned in our morning meeting was that Farrah Fawcett had passed away, and we were trying to come up with concepts to pay tribute to her. The day wore on as usual,...

Exclusive: Director Eric Forsberg Talks Mega Piranha and More!
I first interviewed Eric Forsberg back in August of 2006 in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in April of 2010, and I am interviewing him again in anticipation of Mega Piranha, another killer animal mockbuster he's made for The Asylum.

I'm feeling a sense of déjà vu. With Mega Piranha debuting on Syfy April 10th and then hitting DVD shelves on April 27th, now seemed like a good time for a lighthearted return engagement with Mr. Forsberg discussing the majesty of Mega Piranha, what it's like working for the mockbuster masters at The Asylum, and his past, present, and future projects.

Foy: When we first spoke back in 2006, it was in anticipation of the release of Snakes on a Train. Now here we are in 2010 speaking in anticipation of the release of Mega Piranha. Is there no escaping the Asylum?

Eric: No, there isn’t,...

Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington in Avatar (2009)
Here we are, the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. For months we've been seeing these movies, hearing buzz about their awards-worthiness, watching as the participating players press palms and tell the world why their efforts deserve to be honored ahead of the rest. And it all comes down to this. Who will go home with Best Picture? Will it be James Cameron's towering juggernaut "Avatar" or Kathryn Bigelow's tense, indie war story "The Hurt Locker"? That's just one of the many tight races this evening, so keep your browser locked here -- and make sure to keep refreshing! -- for continuing live coverage and commentary of the awards show as it unfolds.

12:02am It was almost a good ending. But then we ended on those two jokers. Steve, Alec... I love you guys. But please don't host the Oscars again. Thanks to all of you readers for tuning in!

And the Super Bowl Advertiser Mvp (Most Valuable Pitch) Award Goes to ...
If we had to pick one winner from last night's game it would have to be the Saints, of course. But who won when it came to the $175 million ad game? With 62 Super Bowl spots valued at about $2.8 million each (and that's just for the media buy), here are the five other winners and losers when it came to getting their advertising dollars' worth...or not.

Winners

Google. This ridiculously simple, heartwarming concept--part of Google's Search Stories--that chronicled a long-distance relationship through a series of search-field entries had Super Bowl parties going "awwwww" all across the country. This ad probably cost nothing to produce, and wasn't even exclusive to the Super Bowl (Eric Schmidt explains further here), yet the ad's visual impact was so effective it had already spawned a worthy parody that started to appear yesterday afternoon. Google wins big...and they don't even need to advertise.Snickers. Huge...

The Peacock Is Burning
"I think viewers are going to be happy to see this lineup of great new shows that will truly fit the NBC legacy of quality, culturally defining shows."That was Angela Bromstad, president of NBC Entertainment, unveiling the television network's 2009-10 lineup to the media last May. At the heart of that schedule was Jay Leno, who days later hosted his final episode of "The Tonight Show." In a move NBC touted as a coup—and many working in scripted television decried as a harbinger of the end times—Leno agreed to stay with the network and set up shop five nights a week in the 10 p.m. time slot that had traditionally been home to some of TV's best-known dramas. NBC planned to do nothing short of change the way broadcast networks program their schedules, a tradition-rooted process built on viewing habits formed over generations.Oops.Come December, Bromstad...

Peter Berg at an event for Lions et agneaux (2007)
'Battleship' Sets A Course For July 2011 With Peter Berg At The Helm
Peter Berg at an event for Lions et agneaux (2007)
The word emerged today that director Peter Berg's adaptation of the Hasbro board game "Battleship" will sail into theaters on July 1, 2011, according to a report in Variety. Berg described his adaptation as "a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle." It's worth noting that he didn't actually name the aggressors, so it could be anything from terrorists to aliens and beyond. Given Berg's background -- "Hancock," "The Kingdom," "The Rundown" -- it could really be anything.

Last week, the MTV's Eric Ditzian had a little chat with the director, and he was all too excited to discuss his upcoming board game adaptation. When Eric expressed skepticism about the feasability of adapting a game of this sort for the big screen, Berg jumped quickly to dismiss any concerns.

"That's what we do man. It's our job to crack these things... and they're very crackable,...

Did Apple's Product Secrecy Cause a Suicide at Foxconn?
Sun Danyong was a Foxconn China employee until last Thursday, when, after apparently being responsible for the loss of an Apple prototype device, he committed suicide. Is Apple's ferocious product secrecy to blame for his death?

The story, which was brought to light by Eric Eldon at VentureBeat, runs like this: Sun was a young engineering graduate working at Foxconn on product communications. As part of his job he took possession of sixteen Apple device prototypes, due to be shipped to Apple for further testing. Shortly after doing this, he discovered one of the devices was missing and, unable to find it, he alerted his company. On Wednesday night three Foxconn employees allegedly searched his apartment, which is apparently illegal under Chinese law. There are rumors--possibly untrue--that during this procedure they also harassed Sun. Sometime around 3 A.M. on Thursday Sun leaped to his death from his apartment window.

It's a tragic tale,...

In the Pipeline: The Science of Sleep
  • In the Pipeline presents: Michel Gondry's The Science of Sleep To see an exceedingly imaginative and creative director like Michel Gondry let loose to all his potential on a film sounds to be an ideal way to spend of couple of hours in the dark. Certainly, that’s what his newest film, The Science of Sleep, promises to be. The story sounds to be the perfect playground for Gondry to experiment and explore. The film follows Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal) as he returns to Paris, on the encouragement of his mother, where he takes a most mundane job, causing him to escape into his dreams. As Stephane becomes infatuated with a neighbor, Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), she begins occupying his dreams, blurring Stephane’s distinction of reality and fantasy. Anyone familiar with Michel Gondry’s work would know his ability for exploring dreams and the surreal experiences of life.
