Universal Basic Guys (2024)
Universal Basic Guys: Season Three; Fox Renews Animated Comedy Series for 2026-27 Already
Universal Basic Guys (2024)
The Universal Basic Guys will be back for a third season. Fox has already renewed the show for another round. The show was renewed for a second season a year ago, months before the series premiere. The first season finished in December.

An animated comedy series, the Universal Basic Guys TV show stars series creators Adam Malamut and Craig Malamut with Talia Genevieve, Fred Armisen, and Ally Maki. The story revolves around brothers and Glantontown, New Jersey factory workers Mark (Adam Malamut) and Hank Hoagies (Craig Malamut). After they lose their jobs at the local hot dog factory to AI-powered robots, they are enrolled in a pilot basic income program and given $3,000 a month. Now, the brothers and the rest of their local buddies are like kids in the summertime once again, overflowing with the perilous combo of free time and...

Fox Doubles Down on Animation With 3 More Major TV Series Renewals
Image
Fox will be the place to go for animated comedies on broadcast television. After recently giving several animated shows big renewals, three more have been confirmed.

Per Deadline, Fox has just renewed the following animated shows: Krapopolis, Grimsburg, and Universal Basic Guys. The news follows the network recently giving four-season renewals of the long-running animated shows The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, and American Dad!. In the case of American Dad!, the series also is making its return to Fox after making the move from TBS, though it originally aired its first nine seasons on Fox.

Krapopolis is currently in its second season, which is concluding this month. The show, created by Dan Harmon, imagines a more zany version of ancient Greek lore where humans interact with gods and mythical creatures. It had previously been renewed through Season 4, and the new renewal by Fox will guarantee a fifth season of the show.

Fox Renews ‘Universal Basic Guys,’ ‘Grimsburg’ and ‘Krapopolis’
Image
Fox has greenlit more seasons of three of its adult animated series: “Universal Basic Guys,” “Grimsburg,” and “Krapopolis.”

“Grimsburg” and “Universal Basic Guys” are both returning for Season 3, while “Krapopolis” has been renewed for Season 5.

“Krapopolis,” which has received a Season 5 order ahead of Season 3, “is set in mythical ancient Greece and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to run one of the world’s first cities, while also trying their best to not kill each other in the process. The series centers on Deliria (Hannah Waddingham), goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. As petty as she is powerful, Deliria is only interested in defending civilization if it means she’ll get more worshipers out of it than her frenemies up on Mt. Olympus,” according to the official description.

Richard Ayoade, Matt Berry, Pam Murphy and Duncan Trussell also star.

The show was created by Dan Harmon,...

‘Grimsburg’, ‘Krapopolis’ & ‘Universal Basic Guys’ Renewed At Fox
Image
Exclusive: Fox is continuing with its animation fix. The network has renewed three of its animated series — Grimsburg, Krapoplis and Universal Basic Guys.

This follows its bumper deal to renew long-running hits The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, as well as returning series American Dad, for four more seasons.

Grimsburg, which stars Jon Hamm, is returning for Season 3, Krapopolis returns for Season 5 and Universal Basic Guys is back for Season 3.

Grimsburg, which premiered in January 2024, centers on Marvin Flute (Hamm), who may be the greatest detective ever to catch a cannibal clown and correctly identify a mid-century modern armoire. But there’s one mystery he still can’t crack — himself. To do that he must return to Grimsburg, a town where everyone has a secret or three, and redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow detectives, his ferocious ex-wife and his lovably unstable son.

With ‘Universal Basic Guys,’ Creators Adam and Craig Malamut Take Their Vision to Primetime
Image
Four years ago, animators Adam and Craig Malamut were thinking about what came next. Their beloved “Game of Zones” (an animated mashup of the modern-day NBA and “Game of Thrones” on Bleacher Report) was ending, and they had some new characters they wanted to bring to life.

“We knew we wanted to bring out these characters and figure out the best setting to put them in and what’s going to feel fresh, especially because the development process takes so long,” Craig Malamut told IndieWire. “[Back then] Andrew Yang was running for president and was talking about universal basic income and AI was in the conversation.”

That was enough of a kernel to prompt “Universal Basic Guys,” the latest addition to Fox’s Sunday night Animation Domination lineup, in which employees at a hot dog factory are left unemployed but with universal basic income — and a lot of free time on their hands.

‘Universal Basic Guys’ Review: Fox’s Good-Natured Bro Toon Is Too Familiar to Feel Fresh
Image
There’s surely nothing more basic a critic could possibly do than describe a show with “basic” in its name as basic. But it’s difficult to come up with a more fitting word to describe Fox’s Universal Basic Guys, a cartoon that, at least initially, seems rooted in all the hoariest sitcom clichés of the ’90s.

The series, created by Adam and Craig Malamut, does reveal occasional glimmers of a potential to become something more distinctive — typically in moments when it ditches the road well-traveled for stranger, more outlandish and often downright fantastical detours. But such moments are spread too thin over the course of a 13-episode first season better described as fine than fun.

The “basic” in that title actually refers to the concept of Universal Basic Income, which ostensibly drives the plot. As explained in the theme song that opens each episode, South Jersey brothers Mark and Hank Hoagies,...

‘Universal Basic Guys’ Adds A New Boob to TV’s Confident Idiot Hall of Fame

Truck drivers. Cashiers. Now even movie critics could be among the workers whose jobs are at risk of disappearing due to automation. We probably all hope there will be a plan to look after humans who get replaced in the labor force by some form of robot, and maybe Universal Basic Guys exists to give us a model for the future. If nothing else, it’s a more promising new addition to Fox’s Animation Domination lineup than we’ve seen in years.

The show, premiering September 8th, makes its first smart choice by not belaboring its high-concept premise. Instead of wasting a whole episode showing us how it’s come to be, we get an expository theme song performed by protagonist Mark Hoagies: “Well, I used to work in a hot dog factory / Until dem robots came along / And now there is no job for me / But I get...

60 Most Anticipated Shows of Fall 2024
Image
Fall marks the start of the traditional TV season. And while streaming has made television a year-round spectacle, an avalanche of new and returning series make this autumn feel more special than recent years.

Hollywood’s content contraction, along with the post-pandemic and strike landscape results in less shows overall. But upcoming streaming, cable and broadcast offerings come with such promise that we had to double our traditional preview to fit a fraction of the noteworthy titles set to premiere in the coming months. Ryan Murphy is set to take over the conversation with four new shows across three networks — including FX’s “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” and “Grotesquerie,” Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and ABC’s “Doctor Odyssey” — while returning favorites like “Abbott Elementary,” “The Diplomat” and “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” will keep fans entertained as the air starts to cool. Then there...

Fox Surprises Comic-Con Attendee With $3,000 Prize at ‘Universal Basic Guys’ Panel
Image
Fox just made San Diego Comic-Con a richer experience for one lucky attendee. During Thursday night’s panel promoting the network’s upcoming new animated series “Universal Basic Guys,” Fox passed out a swag bag to everyone in the San Diego Convention Center ballroom. One of those bags had a special sticker, randomly awarding that winner $3,000.

Actually, because it was shaped like a hot dog, the sticker announced, “You are a weiner.” The $3,000 prize is in line with the concept for “Universal Basic Guys,” which centers on two brothers who work at a hot dog factory — until they lose their jobs to automation and are given $3,000 a month in a new basic income program. The series follows them as they suddenly have a lot of free time and money to pursue some ridiculous adventures.

Series creators Adam Malamut and Craig Malamut revealed the surprise while sharing more details about “Universal Basic Guys,...

Adam and Craig Malamut have landed a series order at Fox for an animated comedy series currently titled “Universal Basic Guys/The Hoagie Bros.”

The official series description states, “brothers Mark and Hank Hoagies suddenly find themselves with no jobs when the Glantontown Hot Dog factory switches over to automation. Lucky for them, the town started a radical Universal Basic Income pilot program, giving all residents of Glantontown 3,000 per month with no strings attached. We always wonder how some ideas come to fruition. Take forexample the website Bread People. At some point there was a guy who had a littlebit of time on his hands, the necessary photoshop skills and an idea… a simplebut brilliant idea.

That guys name is Adam Malamut. And his concept is this, what would famous people look like if their heads were made of bread? And withthat Bread People was born.

His first culinary combination was Bread Favre.

From there,Malamut has been on a mission, to create a site that “provides pictures ofbread celebrities for you to look at.” Beautiful in it’s simplicity.
