Crumb Catcher: Arrow Video Review
Image
Crumb Catcher is now available from Arrow Video.

Crumb Catcher is the rare type of film that feels entirely unique in its construct. Uniqueness doesn’t always translate to quality, but in the case of Chris Skotchdopole’s quirky thriller, it mostly does. Largely inspired by the eerie and bewildering nature of The Twilight Zone, Skotchdopole’s vision is one of darkness and black humor that, despite its unlikeable characters, serves as an entertaining experiment.

Crumb Catcher plot

While celebrating their honeymoon at a secluded, luxurious estate in upstate New York, newlyweds Leah and Shane are visited by John, a strange and pushy entrepreneur, and his wife Rose. Determined to secure funding and investors for his new invention, the “Crumb Catcher,” John and Rose subject the couple to a night of terror that will test their relationship in ways they never imagined.

To mark the occasion, we’re proud to share an Exclusive look at the film’s trailer, which you can check out in the embed above.

The film has the following synopsis: Two married couples collide in Chris Skotchdopole’s beautifully shot and wonderfully wild Crumb Catcher, a truly unique and darkly funny home invasion thriller from the stable of Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix. After blacking out during his wedding night, Shane (Rigo Garay) and his new wife, Leah (Ella Rae Peck), head to a remote house for their honeymoon. Their plans to find wedded bliss are hampered when there is a knock at their door. It’s the waiter,...

‘Crumb Catcher’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Rigo Garay, Ella Rae Peck, Lorraine Farris, John Speredakos | Written by Chris Skotchdopole, Larry Fessenden, Rigo Garay | Directed by Chris Skotchdopole

With horror films nothing is off limits. The thing that seems the safest place can bring the biggest terror. Think of the shower scene in Psycho, swimming is such fun, until a shark is munching on your torso. And for all of us, home is our safe place, until it isn’t! Through cinema home invasion horror has terrified audiences. Films like The Last House on the Left, When a Stranger Calls, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle and The Strangers.

In 2024 there was a new home invasion film released called Crumb Catcher. This indie thriller really pushed genre boundaries, delivering a gripping experience. Arrow Video snatched up the rights for this indie darling and have given it a deluxe Blu-ray release that fans of this genre are going to just love.

Interview: ‘Crumb Catcher’ with John Speredakos
Image
John Speredakos is no stranger to the world of indie horror. With a career that spans over two decades, the New York City-born actor has delivered unforgettable performances in films like Wendigo (2001), Blackout (2023), and now Crumb Catcher (2023), the darkly comedic thriller that premiered at Grimmfest 2024. Directed by Chris Skotchdopole, Crumb Catcher tells the unsettling story of a newlywed couple held hostage by a maniacally optimistic inventor, played by Speredakos, and his sour wife. The film explores themes of class, delusion, and desperation, all wrapped in a pitch-black comedic tone that keeps the audience guessing.

Will Knowles sat down with John at Grimmfest, where he opened up about the joy of playing such a twisted character, his love for improvisation, and what’s coming next in his burgeoning horror career.

Grimmfest, one of the UK’s premier horror festivals, was the perfect setting for Crumb Catcher to make its mark. The festival’s 2024 edition,...

Crumb Catcher Review: A Diamond in the Rough
Image
Chris Skotchdopole makes his directorial debut with “Crumb Catcher,” a thriller starring Rigo Garay and Ella Rae Peck as the newlywed couple Shane and Leah. Their marriage is on shaky ground from the beginning, as is abundantly clear from their forced body language in wedding photos. Hoping for some alone time on their honeymoon, they instead find their retreat disrupted by John and Rose—an obnoxious caterer and his unsettled wife—who won’t leave Shane and Leah be.

John in particular relentlessly pursues the couple, desperate to get them onboard with his mysterious invention, the “Crumb Catcher.” His erratic behavior spins the situation out of control. Meanwhile, it’s obvious Shane and Leah barely know each other, and their relationship is hanging by a thread. Tensions escalate as John and Rose impose themselves, wielding dark secrets that threaten both Shane’s career and marriage.

Drawing from these volatile ingredients,...

Crumb Catcher Review | Ridiculous Home Invasion Thriller Is Pure Cringe
Image
There are characters we hate, from Amon Gth in Schindlers List to Cal Hockley from Titanic. Then there are characters who are simply so annoying that our dislike for them ruins the movie, including, but hardly limited to, Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Mutt Williams from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. To this list we can add at least one of the only four major characters in Crumb Catcher, a home invasion thriller and black comedy with too little storytelling credibility. It's the kind of film populated by those whose actions only occasionally strafe the realm of recognizable human behavior.

Such issues would be easier to ignore had writer/director Chris Skotchdopole, in his debut feature, paid more than lip service to the sociopolitical themes poking through his weighty screenplay. Theres an intriguing middle-class desperation in the way sweaty blabbermouth John...

‘Crumb Catcher’ Review: The Honeymoon’s Over Before It Starts in Black-Comedy Thriller
Image
Even Mario Bava’s succinctly titled horror “Hatchet for the Honeymoon” 54 years ago did not imagine a more vividly unpleasant entrée to wedlock than “Crumb Catcher,” Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial bow. In this mix of home-invasion thriller and grotesque comedy, a just-hitched young couple already on each other’s last nerves are surprised by uninvited visitors, causing the night to go from bad to very much worse. If you can withstand spending nearly two hours in the company of these grating, argumentative characters, there are rewards to be had in a skillfully wrought, twisty suspense tale that releases to limited U.S. theaters on July 19.

Introduced posing for photos immediately after their wedding, Shane (Rigo Garay) and Leah (Ella Rae Peck) do not appear to be much of a love match. He’s clearly discomfited by the high-end surroundings, which her otherwise disapproving parents apparently bankrolled; she unthinkingly “corrects” his every spoken thought.

‘Crumb Catcher’ Review: Debut Feature Director Chris Skotchdopole Serves a Painful, Promising Mess
Image
Judging by his director’s statement, Chris Skotchdopole had bigger ideas for the allegorical “Crumb Catcher” than his messy debut feature pulls off. That won’t matter to the right audience who, when self-selected, ought to resemble a perfect Venn diagram of Eli Roth’s “Knock Knock” fans and apologists for Michael Haneke’s American “Funny Games” remake.

This bizarre four-hander drama turned psychological thriller — about newlyweds harassed on their honeymoon by a shady couple hocking a mysterious culinary invention — doesn’t quite match the filmmaker’s lofty ambition to say something…anything…that hasn’t already been said about marital malaise and the American Dream. Still, there’s a tasteful sort of nausea contained in Skotchdopole’s sloppy blackmail plot as chunky as it is tragicomic. Set mostly inside a nondescript rental home in upstate New York, this incohesive experiment in escalating tensions and false niceties will whet the...

‘Crumb Catcher’ Review: Politeness Turns Violent in Chris Skotchdopole’s Feature Debut
Image
Chris Skotchdopole’s Crumb Catcher is a tantalizing mix of the absurd and the mundane, with each of those two poles encapsulated by John (John Speredakos), an aging waiter who describes himself as an artist and entrepreneur. With his earnest grin and thinning mane, he registers less as a threat than an annoyance when he accosts a young, just-married couple, Shane (Rigo Garay) and Leah (Ella Rae Peck), in their car, making the sort of insistent small talk that you would seem to need a crowbar to extricate yourself from.

You’ve probably seen this sort of man before. If so, you maybe tried to avoid him. And in Skotchdopole’s feature debut, he shows up in the middle of the night to the lavish home where Shane and Leah spend their honeymoon, subjecting them to the mother of all horrors: a pitch.

The film takes its time at first,...

Blackout Review
Image
Plot: Infected by the bite of a werewolf, a man sets out to bring down a shady businessman before arranging the end of his own life.

Review: Larry Fessenden has over 100 acting credits to his name, and if you’ve been following the horror genre over the last few decades there’s a good chance you’ve seen him show up in something, whether it be a Ti West movie, Stake Land, Late Phases, You’re Next, or the movie I first noticed him in, Session 9. He’s also a prolific producer, and has directing credits stretching back to the 1980s – most of those credits being on horror movies. Over the course of his career, he has told stories of vampires, the Wendigo, a man-eating fish, and even came up with his own take on Frankenstein’s Monster with his 2019 film Depraved. Continuing down the path of putting his stamp on the concept of classic monsters,...

Frankenstein (1994)
Blackout Review: A Werewolf Thriller About the Addictions of the Mind, Body, and Soul
Frankenstein (1994)
Like Depraved, a modern retelling of Frankenstein, Blackout finds writer-director Larry Fessenden once again toying with classic monster tropes. The new film focuses on a tortured artist, Charley (Alex Hurt), whose name is just a few letters removed from “Chaney.” Charley is dealing with a nasty case of werewolfism, which is the same affliction that plagued Lon Chaney Jr.’s character, Larry Talbot, in 1941’s The Wolf Man.

Where Depraved was a commentary on modern warfare, Ptsd, and the pharmaceutical industrial complex, Blackout narrows its focus to the business of being a modern white liberal in a small town. Charley is concerned about the environment, and he’s disturbed at the racist groupthink stoked by a local real estate magnate, Hammond (Marshall Bell), who happens to be his former boss and the father of his ex-girlfriend, Sharon (Addison Timlin). At one point, Charley asks a former co-worker what Hammond has...

Fantasia Review: Larry Fessenden’s Werewolf Feature Blackout Brings Impressive Effects and Narrative Loose Ends
Larry Fessenden
As with Depraved, writer-director Larry Fessenden returns to the world of classic, Universal-inspired monsters in Blackout. Whereas that title brought the mythos of Frankenstein’s monster (and its ample room for social commentary) into the present-day, this latest update shifts focus towards the so-called “wolfman.”

How does knowing he potentially killed innocent people affect Charley (Alex Hurt)? How can he keep pretending his life is simple and his love (with Addison Timlin’s Sharon) pure when a cloud of uncertain violence looms above the three-day nightly windows he cannot remember each month? Because while his actually being a werewolf is presented with enough ambiguity to make the truth part of the intrigue, Fessenden pulls no punches insofar as making certain we know Charley is at fault. He sees glimpses of his victims’ faces and, as an artist, paints them to try severing their hold. So while he might not be...

Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Larry Fessenden
Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.

Blackout marks the second pairing of Glass Eye Pix, the New York production shingle headed by Fessenden, and Yellow Veil Pictures, having previously collaborated successfully on world sales for Fessenden’s 2019 Depraved, which was released by IFC Midnight in the US to great acclaim.

The film follows a fine-arts painter convinced he is a werewolf wreaking havoc on a small American town every full moon. It is the latest addition to Fessenden’s own Monsterverse, along with his breakout feature, the vampire-themed Independent Spirit Award-Winning feature Habit (1995) and 2019’s Frankenstein riff, Depraved.

Yellow Veil Pictures Boards World Sales Rights on Larry Fessenden’s Werewolf Horror Film ‘Blackout,’ Drops Teaser Poster (Exclusive)
Image
Yellow Veil Pictures announced it has boarded world sales on Larry Fessenden’s upcoming horror film “Blackout,” and also released the film’s first teaser poster. The film, which is currently in post-production, will begin the festival circuit later in 2023 after finishing its photography in Hudson Valley, New York this past fall.

“Blackout” depicts a painter who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon.

The horror film joins Fessenden’s own “monsterverse,” with the New York-based actor and filmmaker’s vampire-themed breakout feature “Habit” (1995) and Frankenstein-inspired “Depraved” (2019).

“Blackout” is the second partnership between Yellow Veil Pictures, a New York City and Los Angeles-based film sales and distribution company, and Glass Eye Pix, an American independent film studio Fessenden founded where he serves as CEO. The two joined forces on world sales for “Depraved,” which was released by IFC Midnight in the United States.

'Believe' episode 3 pics: 'Origin' reveals Bo's powers run in the family
Through the first two episodes of "Believe," viewers have seen some of Bo's (Johnny Sequoyah) powers and been told that she may have even greater untapped abilities. What hasn't been explored, though, is the source of her abilities.

That will change with Sunday's (March 23) episode, "Origin." Flashbacks will feature Bo's mother, Nina (guest star Ella Rae Peck), and Zap2it has a few exclusive photos that help explain Bo's present-day story.

Nina was an original recruit of the group known as Orchestra, and as you can see, she got to know both Winter (Delroy Lindo) and Skouras (Kyle MacLachlan) in her time there. She has some of the same gifts as Bo and becomes pregnant during her time with Orchestra, which helps explain how Bo is on Winter's and Skouras' radar in the present.

When Nina's powers are used for military purposes and things go awry, though, she extracts a...

Welcome to the Family: Canceled by NBC, Community Returning
One new sitcom is no longer in the NBC family. The peacock network has canned Welcome to the Family after three low-rated episodes.

On Welcome to the Family, a pair of very different families are brought together when their teens get "in a family way." The sitcom's cast includes Mike O'Malley, Mary McCormack, Ricardo Chavira, Justina Machado, Ella Rae Peck, Joseph Haro, and Fabrizio Guido.

The comedy started out with very low ratings and the numbers got worse in week two. They seem to have shown a little growth last night but the ratings were still terrible. As a result, NBC has swung the axe.

It's unclear what will become of the unaired episodes or how many installments have actually been produced. NBC initially ordered 13 of them.

The peacock network will fill the timeslot with a...

Welcome to the Family: Season One Ratings
NBC certainly needs help on Thursday night. Will Welcome to the Family be the answer to their ratings prayers? Will it be a success or cancelled instead? [See the update below.]

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

10/18 update: NBC has cancelled Welcome to the Family after three episodes.

'Welcome to the Family' premiere is a groan-worthy introduction
Mary McCormack
I wanted to like Welcome to the Family, I really did. It has a strong cast playing the two sets of parents. Its premise is straightforward, and even contains some weighty issues. Its lead-in is Parks and Recreation.

But I don’t. I strongly disliked the premiere. The show, which centers on two families who must overcome their differences because their teenage children are about to have a baby and want to stay together, had potential, but because everything that could have been good about Welcome to the Family (a.k.a. “Wttf,” as the promos continue to bash into our heads) fails to deliver.
