  • Her father was Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., Baltimore's first Italian-American mayor. Her mother was Annunciata D'Alesandro. Her brother Thomas J. D'Alesandro III was also elected Mayor of Baltimore.
  • Achieved the highest political rank for a female in American history when she attained the position of 60th "Speaker of the United States House of Representatives" (4 January 2007).
  • She was honored by the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, California for her efforts on behalf of the company in securing federal support for the rebuilding of the theater.
  • (October 20, 2019) Her older brother, Thomas J. D'Alesandro III, died of stroke complications at the age of 90.
  • In 2020, she became the oldest-sitting Speaker of the House of Representatives, surpassing Sam Rayburn.
