Studiocanal’s M-k Kennedy on Company’s Ambition to Become a ‘Television Studio With Worldwide Presence’ Through Tentpole Series Like ‘Paris Has Fallen’ and ‘Apollo Has Fallen’ (Exclusive)
Image
With only one year under her belt as Studiocanal’s executive managing director of TV series, M-k Kennedy, who joined from Netflix, is leveling up the scripted ambitions of the French pay TV group’s production arm.

After spearheading Studiocanal’s first in-house international series, “Paris Has Fallen” — which broke rating records on Canal+ and topped the charts on Amazon U.K. and Hulu in the U.S. — Kennedy reveals to Variety that the highly anticipated second season of the anthology, “Apollo Has Fallen,” has started filming. Rather than taking place in a single location, the eight-part series will hop from country to country, unfolding everywhere from the Libyan coast to the streets of Madrid, with principal photography taking place across the U.K., Marta and Spain. The series is produced by Studiocanal, Urban Myth Films, Millenium and G-Base, who were also behind “Paris Has Fallen,” which sold to more than 170 territories worldwide.

The Couple Next Door season 2 production update and first-look images
Image
If you liked The Couple Next Door season 1 on Channel 4 (in the UK) and Starz (in the U.S.), then you'll be happy to know that a second season is on the way. Though as we've previously reported, unfortunately neither Outlander actor Sam Heughan or the rest of the main Og cast are returning since the network decided to do an anthology-ish sort of format going into season 2.

Filming and news about The Couple Next Door season 2 first came back in November 2024, and now there's an update! Production has officially wrapped in Belgium, and there's some first-look images to look forward to, per a press release. No release date on Channel 4 has been set yet though, and it's not clear if Starz will choose to broadcast the second season in the U.S.

There's going to be a new set of actors, but I think the story sounds very...

The Couple Next Door season 1 is over and season 2 is happening - but there's a catch
Image
If you were hoping for more of The Couple Next Door on Starz today, we're sorry to say that the season is over. The finale was released last week on Feb. 21 with episode 6, "Crimes of Passion." It was a pretty anticlimactic end to the story if I'm being honest. But, here we are.

That does mean that there is no episode 7, as well as no more new episodes going forward since season 1 was only six total. Perhaps you enjoyed the show more than me, which is great. So if you're looking forward to more, the good news is that The Couple Next Door season 2 is happening. However, there's a catch.

Courtesy: Starz

None of the main foursome - Outlander actor Sam Heughan as Danny, Jessica DeGouw as Becka, Eleanor Tomlinson as Evie, and Alfred Enoch as Pete - will be reprising their roles in the second season. I mean, I...

The Couple Next Door season 2 is happening, but don't expect to see Outlander's Sam Heughan
Image
I don't know about all of you, but the biggest draw for me personally in The Couple Next Door is the fact that Outlander star Sam Heughan is one of the leads in it. That's why I started watching - to support our favorite actor and also have something to tune in to during Droughtlander. With the finale now out and that let's say interesting ending, you might be wondering about the show's future.

Yes, there will be The Couple Next Door season 2. The psychological thriller was co-produced by Starz and British network Channel 4, having aired across the pond first before we got it here in the U.S. Back in November 2024, Channel 4 announced that it had renewed the show for a second season. But, there's some bad news.

4 things to know about The Couple Next Door before it premieres on Starz

Droughtlander is almost upon us Outlander fans, but don't worry! There's a new show coming to Starz starring Sam Heughan that will help tide us over for a little bit as we wait for our favorite show to return. We love supporting the actors in their other ventures, and this time is no different. The Couple Next Door makes its debut in the U.S. this week. So here's 4 things you need to know about the show before it's on.

Episodes will be released weekly

The Couple Next Door premieres Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 on Starz. Even though the season is only six episodes long, there will only be one episode released each week. You can either start streaming at 12 a.m. Et Fridays through the Starz app, or tune in later in the evening at 9 p.m. Et on the Starz channel. The Couple Next Door starring Sam Heughan finally has a release date on Starz later than promised
Image
Sam Heughan and Outlander fans, we have good news to share with you! Of course we love to see the actor as the one and only Jamie Fraser, but that doesn't mean we don't also love supporting the cast in other projects. One of the intriguing ones us in the U.S. have been waiting to see is The Couple Next Door starring Heughan himself. There's finally a premiere date, but it's a little longer than promised.

In July 2024, Starz shared that the psychological drama was set to begin streaming and airing in winter 2024. So perhaps a December release is what was assumed. However, The Couple Next Door will premiere Friday, Jan. 17, 2025 on Starz. Now, look. I know the wait is not that much longer than what we'd been anticipating. I'm just so excited to see the show, and it's a little annoying the debut is being pushed slightly. But,...

Channel 4 has renewed the psychological drama for a second season after the first became the UK network’s biggest scripted streaming launch on record, with episode one garnering more than a million views in its first seven days.

Channel 4 co-produced Season 1 of The Couple Next Door with Starz, but the Lionsgate brand was not mentioned in the press release for Season 2. Deadline has asked about Starz’s involvement.

Season 2 will feature a new cast, led by Sam Palladio (Nashville), Annabel Scholey (The Split), Aggy K Adams (The Witcher), and Sendhil Ramamurthy (One Piece). Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered) will return. Production is underway in Belgium. Season 1 starred Eleanor Tomlinson and Sam Heughan.

Chuck Chuck Baby Review: A Heartfelt Queer Romance
Image
Janis Pugh’s debut feature Chuck Chuck Baby wastes no time in establishing itself as a non-conformist. Behind the camera is Pugh, taking on directing and writing duties, crafting an intimate story of self-discovery. She brings together a talented pair of leads in Louise Brealey and Annabel Scholey. Brealey plays Helen, living an unfulfilling life in small-town Wales until the return of her old neighbor Joanne, played by Scholey, rekindles long-buried feelings.

Pugh breathes new life into familiar tropes of romance and musicals. Rather than rigidly sticking to formula, she allows her characters’ emotions to shine through in creative ways. Scenes transform delightfully as they passionately lip-sync classic tunes that reflect their feelings.

Pugh also crosses genres with ease, infusing drama, comedy, and coming-of-age themes into a heartfelt LGBTQ love story. While touching on universal ideas of empowerment and acceptance, the intimate portrayals feel refreshingly genuine.

From the outset, Pugh...

‘Dead And Buried’ Recap & Review: BBC Thriller Has A Fascinating Plot But Underwhelms In The End
Image
BBC’s latest Northern Ireland-set thriller miniseries, Dead and Buried, hinges upon a terrible tragedy/crime that happened seventeen years prior to the timeline of the show. The show essentially becomes a long-drawn confrontation between the two where the drama is so palpable that it leaves the audience in a serious dilemma about whose side is to pick—Michael or Cathy? Here in this article, we’re going to do a summary of it before sharing our thoughts on Dead and Buried.

Chuck Chuck Baby Review: A Heart-Pounding Triumph
Image
Chuck Chuck Baby is one of those fabulously rare feel-good movies that stays with you long after you leave the theater. In the vein of other soul-stirring films like Before Sunrise, The Way Back, Billy Elliot, The Full Monty, and even Tarsems deeply moving The Fall, writer/director Janis Pugh manages to capture our hearts while colorfully revealing the ever-shifting emotional kaleidoscope of regular life.

Theres the longing for something better, the deep comfort of having great friends, and the unbridled joy that emerges from a surprise reunion that can open our hearts so wide that it literally takes our breath away. Its all here in this powerful and entertaining musical comedy/drama that celebrates the female working class.

Steered by a resilient cast featuring Louise Brealey (Sherlock) and Annabel Scholey (The Split), Chuck Chuck Baby may have a catchy tagline "a film of love, loss, and music set amongst...

Sony Pictures Classics Courts Young Demos, Music Buffs With Irish Trio ‘Kneecap’: “What ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ Must Have Felt Like” — Specialty Preview
Image
‘Kneecap’, the name of the Irish hip hop group, and the music biopic about — and starring — the groundbreaking trio, opens today on 700+ screens, following up a U.S. tour last fall and leading into another one.

The hybrid documentary, which was a buzzy Sundance title when Sony Pictures Classics nabbed it, recently swept the Galway Film Fleadh and was named Ireland’s Oscar International Feature submission.

Written and directed by Rich Peppiatt, it features group members — Naoise Ó Cairealláin “Móglaí Bap”; Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh “Mo Chara”; and JJ Ó Dochartaigh “Dj Provaí” as themselves, but it’s scripted, and actors, including Michael Fassbender, play their younger selves and family members. With Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best and Simone Kirby.

The film follows Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed “low-life scum” Naoise and Liam Og. When they come together as three, the needle drops on...

One Classic Simpsons Episode Inspired A Postmodern Play (And Was Banned In Germany)
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play."

"The Simpsons" has a wide-ranging cultural influence, but how many episodes of the long-running series can say they inspired an entire postmodern play? At least one: "Cape Feare," the classic season 5 outing in which Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) stalks Bart and forces the Simpsons family into witness protection.

Originally well-received, the episode has only grown in public estimation in the years since it aired, landing on many lists of the show's best episodes and earning an undeniable place in the hallowed halls of pop culture history. It's only fitting, then, that when playwright Anne Washburn decided to dream up a story about a post-apocalyptic world in which entertainment junkies clung to fragments of their favorite TV shows, putting them on as plays that would ultimately shape the mythology of the new world, "Cape Feare" took center stage. Washburn's thought-provoking postmodern play,...

Chuck Chuck Baby
Image
Working class British dramas historically — and still — often fall into a box-ticking exercise of certain tropes and clichés. Musicals have certainly helped shift certain portrayals and representations, with stage adaptations of Billy Elliot, The Full Monty, Kinky Boots and, most recently, West End production Standing At The Sky’s Edge often elevating underrepresented perspectives and voices. While writer/director Janis Pugh’s North Wales-set jukebox musical Chuck Chuck Baby can, at times, fall into those tropes, it proves a welcome female-led addition to the canon.

Despite the oppressive nature, there’s a moving vulnerability juxtaposed with endearing humour at the heart of the central performances.

With a mix of gritty, melodramatic social realism, fairy tale and musical whimsy, Chuck Chuck Baby can, at times, be quite tonally jarring. But the heartfelt and moving performances from Louise Brealey and Annabel Scholey elevate the plucky proceedings, with a sweet and affecting sapphic...

Janis Pugh: 'Bel came in and the chemistry between her and Lou was lovely' Photo: Studio Soho Distribution Janis Pugh’s Chuck Chuck Baby finally makes it to cinemas this week, almost a year after its world premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival. It’s generally upbeat nature makes it perfect for a summer release. It charts the story of Helen (Louise Brealey), whose life is at a low ebb. Her spoilt and unpleasant husband Gary (Celyn Jones) has moved his much younger girlfriend into their house, while still expecting his wife to look after his ailing mum Gwen (Sorcha Cusack). She takes refuge among the camaraderie at the chicken factory where she works and allows her emotions to flood out while listening to songs. Chuck Chuck Baby review – emotionally charged musical drama rules the roost
Louise Brealey
Louise Brealey plays Helen, a chicken factory worker who gets a second chance at love, in Janis Pugh’s uplifting crowdpleaser

There is a terrific warmth and emotional generosity to this romantic comedy-drama from the Welsh film-maker Janis Pugh, and if the storytelling in the end hits some familiar C-major chords, it’s not before a lot of inventive entertainment with quasi-musical sequences showing people singing along to the radio or the stereo morphing into full-on fantasy. I can imagine this being a stage musical crowdpleaser with serious ker-ching potential, packing the audiences in like something by Tim Firth or Willy Russell.

Louise Brealey and Annabel Scholey give seductive lead performances. Brealey plays Helen, a gentle soul living in a small town on the Welsh border with Merseyside, working at a local chicken factory. Her personal life is a deeply unhappy mess: her bullying and emotionally damaged husband has brought...

New UK Trailer for 'Chuck Chuck Baby' Musical Comedy Set in Wales
Image
"We could be so much more than what they think we are." Studio Soho has revealed an official trailer for a British indie comedy titled Chuck Chuck Baby, set for release in UK cinemas this July. The film originally premiered at both the 2023 Edinburgh and Toronto Film Festivals last year, though it still doesn't have a US release confirmed yet. Helen lives with her ex-husband, his 20-year-old girlfriend, their new baby - and his dying mother Gwen. Her life is stuck in a grind, and like all the other women she toils around with at the local chicken factory, is spent in service of the clock. Via TIFF: "The more serious themes of finding strength through community and the quest for female autonomy are intertwined with joyous, observant humour, and [a few] spontaneous musical numbers that the characters find themselves pulled into, capturing the blissful catharsis of art and the way it empowers us to be brave.

BAFTA TV Awards: ‘Top Boy,’ ‘The Sixth Commandment,’ ‘Such Brave Girls’ win big
Image
The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.

“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

“The talent in front of the camera and behind the camera feels like a family. A lot of them started on ‘Top Boy...

Chuck Chuck Baby Review – Eiff 2023
Image
When attending a UK film festival, you inevitably run into films that display some very tired clichés about the British Working Class. As the latest word from director Janis Pugh, Chuck Chuck Baby deserves to put them all to shame as a film scripted entirely from tired tropes and ideas. As though she asked ChatGPT to write a queer romance after feeding it ten years’ worth of The Sun.

So, we have a film that bizarrely tries to mix musical theatre and social realism, telling the story of Helen (Louise Brealey) an utterly downtrodden factory worker, relegated to the status of handmaiden by her gammon-faced ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones). Lodging in Gary’s spare room to care for his ailing mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), Helen’s been rendered all but invisible by the spectre of his new baby with a younger woman. Which is great for thematic resonance but terrible for building a compelling protagonist.

Chuck Chuck Baby Review: A Tender Romance Anchors This British Tale
Image
Helen (Louise Brealey) wakes in a bright, all-pink room, but the reality of her life is nothing like the whimsical room she's awoken in. She lives with her ex-husband Gary (Celyn Jones) and his girlfriend Amy (Emily Fairn in a hilarious performance evoking "Little Britain"). She's not moved out as she has a strong connection to Gary's mother Gwen (Sorcha Cusack), who she cares for when not working night shifts at the local chicken plant. Leaving is all too tempting -- in the opening scene, she takes a suitcase out from under her bed but doesn't go through with packing. Her friends at the plant, Lynn (Emily Aston), Clare (Cat Simmons), and Paula (Beverly Rudd) try and get her to open up, but she seems resigned to the predictable monotony of her life in a small Welsh town.

That all changes when Joanne (Annabel Scholey) re-appears in their quiet town after years away.
