Mysterious Ways Review: A Story of Love and Belonging
Image
Set in a small coastal town in New Zealand, Mysterious Ways quietly explores what it means to follow your heart in the face of adversity. At the center of the story are Reverend Peter Simmons, the vicar of St. John’s Anglican Church, and his partner Jason, a former prisoner turned local rugby coach.

Peter is an openly loving man who believes the church’s message of acceptance and compassion. Under his leadership, St. John’s parish embraces people from all walks of life. But when Peter proposes to Jason over the radio and requests to wed in the church, it awakens reaction in their tight-knit community. Not all share Peter’s progressive values, and conservative forces within the diocese move to pressure the reverend into backing down.

Directed by Paul Oremland, Mysterious Ways follows Peter and Jason’s journey with subtlety. Shot elegantly on location around Auckland, it feels...

Mysterious Ways review – ex-con marries priest in well-meaning LGBTQ+ rights drama
Richard Short
This well-intentioned but stifling film is all too focused on pushing its cause at the expense of its characters, who are reduced to flat ciphers

‘This is us! Not a cause!” says Samoan husband-to-be Jason (Nick Afoa) in a rare moment of self-illumination in this soapy and stiflingly well-meaning gay rights drama from New Zealand. But the film is all too focused on pushing its cause: same-sex marriage and greater flexibility of religious thought. In the process, it reduces its characters to flat ciphers and divvies up surrounding society into LGBTQ+ cheerleaders and graffiti-scrawling hate-mongers.

After being in prison, rugby coach Jason gets cosy with widowed vicar Peter (Richard Short). Peter runs an enlightened parish, with a rainbow-emblazoned billboard outside the church, but discovers the limits of tolerance when he declares his intention to marry Jason on the premises. Their nearest and dearest – including Peter’s daughter Kate (Becky McEwan...

Image
Specialty distributor Ariztical Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to New Zealand-set wholesome gay love story ‘Mysterious Ways.’ Ariztical plans a multi-platform digital release in 2024.

Arthur & Merlin: Knights Of Camelot - Jennie Kermode - 16097
Richard Lester
"Peace is better than ever war," warned Thomas Mallory - but sometimes the latter is necessary to achieve the former, no matter how ill-equipped one may be.

Like Richard Lester's Robin And Marian, Giles Alderson's latest film takes a legendary British hero and imagines him in later life, returning from the Crusades to find much of his work now undone. Unlike that film, it sheers away romantic sentiment and any expectation of a comfortable retirement. This is Arthurian legend from the perspective of the men putting their lives on the line for the sake of their king's dreams, and though it packs in a fair few clichés, it maintains that grittiness throughout.

The year is 463Ad. Arthur (Richard Short) is, in fact, still crusading as the film opens - or at least enjoying the spoils of those activities, drinking heavily and picking fights for fun. During his five year absence his son.

Richard Short
Mary may kill people, but Richard Short is an actor with quite an impressive resumé.

He has played a tattoo artist on Covert Affairs, a sex shop employee on American Horror Story and in his latest role — on Lifetime’s Mary Kills People — he plays the business partner of a woman who assists terminally ill patients with their suicides.

The sophomore season of Mary Kills People concludes Monday, April 9, at 9/8c. This season, after his recent release from prison, Short’s Des Bennett is back in the business of “letting people decide when they go” — aka assisting in their suicides.

Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Bloody Mary
It's hard to imagine how any show can put a comedic spin on the topic of euthanasia, or assisted suicide.

Yet Mary Kills People Season 1 Episode 1, "Bloody Mary," manages to put a darkly humorous filter on this potential downer of a subject.

Not that they take a flippant approach at all. Dr. Mary Harris is a true believer in the compassionate nature of her side business.

It is a service and a privilege she undertakes for her patients.

We're afraid because we don't know what to expect.... but just because there's uncertainty doesn't mean that there's anything to fear

Mary Permalink: We're afraid because we don't know what to expect.... but just because there's uncertainty... Added: April 21, 2017

There's no rushing the process for Mary no matter what how often wham-bam-thank-you-doc Des might nudge her to pick up the pace.

Her patients need to be ready and willing to take that final drink.

Caroline Dhavernas Teases Assisted-Suicide Series Mary Kills People: 'There's Comedy in the Deepest Drama'
Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal (2013)
There’s no need for a spoiler alert when talking about Caroline Dhavernas‘ new series. Her character’s big secret is right there in the title: Mary Kills People.

But unlike the protagonist of Dhavernas’ former series, Hannibal, the lead in Lifetime’s new drama ends lives for mercy — not art (or dinner).

Mary is a medical doctor who, unbeknownst to her family, provides suicide assistance to the terminally ill on the side. Season 1 already aired in Dhavernas’ native Canada, a country that recently voted to legalize the practice.

Is there a ban on new Spider-Man characters?

Spider-Gwen artist Robbi Rodriguez revealed during an interview with the Superior Spider Talk podcast that there is a "big rule" that his team couldn't create any new characters for their comic - apparently due to Sony controlling the Spider-Man film rights.

Soon enough, he was on Newsarama explaining that it had been a "misunderstanding", presumably in a voice like the brain slug victims in Futurama.
