The escalation of terror has dialed up a few more notches as writer/director James DeMonaco takes us further down the hole of first world genocide in The Purge: Election Year. What began behind fortified walls and a false sense of modest superiority to show how no one was safe when bloodlust, greed, and jealousy ruled mankind soon entered the outdoors to find the government blatantly enforcing its own thinly veiled mantra of “kill the poor” when the public stopped doing it for them. In Son of Saul, the titular Saul (Géza Röhrig) is imprisoned within Auschwitz, but is allowed to survive — at least for the time being and under terrible circumstances. Saul and many of his fellow Jewish prisoners are repurposed as the “Sonderkommandos,” work units within the Nazi death camps that assist in the disposal of gas chamber victims. In the film, Saul becomes convinced that a boy that is murdered by the Nazis in the camp is his son, and he attempts to bury said boy against all odds.

The film has screened at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, and most recently, the Toronto International Film Festival.

Through those telenovelas, we saw that we could be anything we wanted to be when we grew up: rancheras who had to keep our land away from dastardly uncles; evil stepmothers with heavy, gaudy earrings; romantic heroes with two, three, even four different love interests; nuns and time travelers and high school women. We were inspired, and our imaginations ran wild with possibilities for our future lives. Let’s face it: before long, every working director, writer, and actor will have done something for either a Marvel or a DC film; maybe even both. The only ones to escape will be the Old Guard of Scorsese, Coppola, Spielberg, and Lucas (though I wonder about Spielberg). Following in the footsteps of Whedon, it seems hardly surprising that now Adam McKay is circling a potential directing gig with Marvel.

According to CraveOnline (via Coming Soon), McKay is currently in talks with the studio about directing a project for them. Though it’s not yet been established what character, group of characters, or sequel he might be taking on, there’s a good chance that the Anchorman director will jump into the McU before much more time has passed.

If you’re not a comic book fan, chances are that the only place you’ve seen Aquaman will be in shows like Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory where he has been mercilessly ridiculed. It’s not hard to understand why, especially as on the surface it appears as if the aquatic superhero does little more than talk to fish.

However, there’s a lot more to Aquaman than that, perhaps explaining why he’s set to make an appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice before taking on a leading role in both Justice League and his own solo movie. Focus Features recently released the trailer for writer/director Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here, his follow-up to Garden State which was infamously funded significantly by funds raised via Kickstarter. If you're a Zach Braff fan, you can just go ahead and skip my cynicism ahead and watch the trailer. I was a big fan of Braff's work on Scrubs but I am not the biggest Garden State fan. While he has a good eye for visuals, much of Garden State and this movie seem to have been written by a series of motivational posters and Facebook statuses strewn together to form a narrative. We'll say this for E4's new show Party House - it's certainly groundbreaking. No other structured reality show introduces a cast of characters for just one episode, but that's precisely what Party House aims to do, with a different bunch of mates throwing a party each week. But would the risk pay off?

Weirdly, yes. We went into Party House wanting to hate it, and we did - at first. Who were these people with names like Shoey? How were they all still friends when they'd all slept with each other? Mad Men began its final season Sunday on AMC with a somber, even opaque episode that was probably a case of holding its final hand close to the vest. You hope there are some sensational cards there. Creator Matthew Weiner, whose baby this is, can be sensational or sensationally drab, exactly as he chooses.

The show's integrity is unmatched, admirable and every so often deeply irritating.

I really have to wonder if moving the show's main focus to New York can really save Glee. This latest episode has me pretty unconvinced, which is unfortunate. Perhaps it's because the only conflict is between Kurt and Blaine. Perhaps it's because the characters still act like high school kids. The only ones who seem to act like adults are Kurt and Rachel -- and they explain it by saying they've been in New York longer. Huh? Yeah, I'm confused too. In addition to the Klaine conflict, Sam and Artie have trouble finding their way around the big city, Rachel gets a verbal slap in the face from Artie to knock her off her pedestal -- sort of -- and Mercedes moves to the East Coast to record her album.

The most recent “X is dead” proclamation comes from The Hollywood Reporter in the form of an obituary for the Hollywood romantic comedy. It’s cause of death, of course, is a lust for an international market and high concepts that play there, but while the article from Tatiana Siegel initially frames the loss with a black veil (the title proclaims that Harry wouldn’t meet Sally in 2013), the reality of the situation isn’t a cause for dirges. It will probably be one of those unsolved mysteries of the ages, like the Voynich Manuscript or the secret ingredient to Spam, how a third Riddick movie got made. The first installment in the now 13-year old franchise, 2000′s Pitch Black, is largely looked back on as being not bad, and its follow-up, 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick is remembered mostly for being terrible, and featuring Judi Dench in a rare career misstep.

So who exactly was clamoring for another film starring bald space-Conan? The answer is apparently its star, Vin Diesel. The new installment, simply titled Riddick, feels like a vanity piece and a weak attempt to capture whatever made Pitch Black as not bad as it was, mostly by retreading it like a lost hiker walking in circles.

Many fans know John Hodgman best for his work on "The Daily Show," being the "PC" to Justin Long's "Mac" in old Apple commercials or making appearances on television shows like "Community" and "Bored to Death." But the comedian spent a good portion of 2012 touring the country doing an apocalypse-themed standup routine that will soon be coming to Netflix in the new special "Ragnarok."

While Hodgman performed the routine a number of times, "Ragnarok" contains a show very close to his heart. The New York-set show took place on Dec. 21, 2012, the night the Mayans said the world would end, and Hodgman performed his routine to a packed house.

Byne, who regularly vents her frustrations on Twitter, told In Touch magazine that she has no clue to why people say she is insane, New York Post reported.

The 27-year-old retired actress said that every time she has heard it, it came from an ugly person's mouth, so she doesn't care.

"The only ones lying about me having a mental illness are people I don't talk to," she said.

Bynes said she has the support of her friends.

With Drew Thompson now in custody, the mad scramble continues as Ellen May (Abby Miller) is on the run with Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) Nicky Augustine (Mike O’Malley) and Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) giving chase. Carter spoke with us about “Peace of Mind” as well as many memorable scenes throughout the season.

Summit's new poster for Now You See Me, the Louis Leterrier-directed illusionist heist thriller with quite an ensemble cast, has been unveiled. Everyone from Jesse Eisenberg to Woody Harrelson to Mark Ruffalo to Isla Fisher to Dave Franco to Morgan Freeman to Michael Caine and yes, even Mélanie Laurent, have a spot on it. The only ones missing are Common, Elias Koteas and Michael Kelly. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer, and I like the unique design - I just wish they were pushing the concept a little bit further to go along with the tricky illusions seen in the film. Nicki, it’s really not acceptable that you showed up fifteen minutes late to ‘American Idol’ on March 13, looking like a hot mess, because you claimed you were stuck in traffic.

On the March 13 live show of American Idol, the top ten came ready to perform. However, Nicki Minaj, you weren’t ready to work. It’s time to really step it up as a judge.

Nicki, you tweeted that you were running late to last night’s show due to being stuck in traffic. For the viewers, the other judges, and the performers to take you seriously, you need to show up on time, if not early.

While you were apparently stuck in traffic, you could have at least changed into something other than a black hoodie and huge sunglasses. It looked unprofessional and was disrespectful to the performers that you would keep your hood up the entire time.

After sitting through the "epic" Mariah-Nicki catfight that wasn't on Wednesday, American Idol decided to cut us a break by only subjecting us to one hour of auditions in Baton Rouge. It's the home of the Dawg, and Randy is hoping the bayou doesn't do him dirty.

But seriously, how little do the audition shows really mean? Apparently the ratings were down initially, but it's because no one remembers the audition people anyway. Hollywood and Las Vegas weeks are entertaining, but no one really cares until the live shows begin. That's when singers start to stand out and develop. There might be one or two auditions that stick in your mind, but for the most part, the clutter of previously featured performers and really talented newbies who we never saw just make it difficult to keep track of everything.

Five On Film is an occasional feature on “Hey You Geeks!!” where directors, writers, actors or just plain awesome advocates of geek culture are asked five questions in line with the theme of their current work. In this edition, I chat about action films and Arnold Schwarzenegger with The Last Stand screenwriter Andrew Knauer.

Knauer wrote The Last Stand to celebrate the action film as it should be; explosive, witty and R rated. Once it was chosen to be the vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to top billed action star, the film quickly became one of the most anticipated of 2013. The Last Stand has already received some promising pre-release praise for its 80′s action sensibilities and use of practical effects. Ahead of its release this Friday, I asked Knauer to speak about his favorite action films and what it means to have action’s most iconic star cast in his film.

As expected, reps for actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt are denying reports that he’ll be playing Batman in the Justice League film scheduled for 2015, or making a cameo in Zack Snyder’s Superman film Man of Steel in 2013. Like I said yesterday, this is to be expected. The only ones who would and could make that official would be Warner Bros, and they too are as quiet as a church mouse about the future of the Batman character. And while it’s obvious the WB holds Christopher Nolan’s trilogy with high regard and would probably really not do anything to piss him off, we know that there will be a new Batman for that Jla film, a Batman that will probably have no connection to Nolan’s series. Still, hiring Gordon-Levitt to play Batman –or even Robin as others have suggested- is something the WB can do without consulting with Nolan.

Former "Saturday Night Live" cast member Victoria Jackson is not afraid to air her radical conservative views. However, she is aware that not everyone working in show business is as vocal as she is, saying an underground network of conservative stars exists in Hollywood.

“In La, there is a secret, underground group of showbiz conservatives. It started with two people in 2000. I was at the fifth or tenth meeting, and now there are over 2,000 people,” Victoria tells me. “The only ones out of the closet are Jon Voight and Pat Boone. There are famous people in there, but they don’t want to lose their career -- and conservatives are blacklisted.”

Jackson refused to name any other celebrities in the "secret, underground group."

Claiming that it is very hard to be even a moderate conservative in the entertainment business, Jackson says it’s much easier to be accepted as a scientologist or homosexual.

Even though Nintendo previously confirmed the Wii U will be able to support two GamePads at the same time, it appears they will not be offering the tablet-style controllers as a standalone purchase. The only ones gamers in the U.S. will be able to get are the ones that come packaged with the Wii U console.

Thankfully, it won't always be this way. Once there are games available that support the use of two GamePad controllers, Nintendo will start putting them on store shelves.

"Through the launch window, there are no games that leverage a second controller. And so, during the launch window here in Noa [Nintendo of America] territories, we will not be selling at retail a second gamepad," Nintendo of America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime told investors during a recent Q&A. "But certainly, when the games come out, we'll be making that accessory available."

The Place Beyond The Pines follows Luke (Ryan Gosling), a motorcycle stunt driver in a traveling carnival. After meeting up with old flame Romina (Eva Mendes), he finds out he has fathered a son. Wanting to do the right thing, Luke quits the carnival and starts working as a mechanic to help support the baby. He soon realizes that the money is obviously not cutting it and so he turns to robbing banks. Obviously, things do not go so smoothly for him and after he runs into ambitious rookie cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), things become increasingly complicated.

First off, anything you have read regarding any similarities to Drive – immediately forget them. Outside of a few controlled sequences of pure style (mainly during chase or driving sequences), the only worthwhile and legitimate comparison is that both films feature Gosling in a lead role. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is a landmark film, truly one of the greatest ever made and perhaps filmmaker Luis Buñuel’s finest (it’s certainly my favorite of his). It’s also so much fun. Buñuel’s anger at institutions was long and storied, and his films were frequently calls for outright anarchy, but Discreet Charm was a turn away from the bitterness and meanness of films like The Exterminating Angel or Los Olvidados towards a genial bemusement at the absurdity of upper-class life. Telling the story of a group of friends whose attempts to get together for dinner are thwarted first by simple misunderstandings, and later by more elaborate, surreal interventions, you get the sense that he’s somewhere, just offscreen, laughing at the whole endeavor, and inviting us to do likewise.
