Julian Epstein was born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA, on February 18, 1924. He studied composition with Paul Hindemith, Otto Luening and Nadia Boulanger. While an undergraduate at Yale, he was drafted into the US Army toward the end of WW II and played clarinet in a marching band. After the Battle of the Bulge, he was shipped to Europe in 1945 and served in Italy. Julian Epstein changed his name to Julian Stein when he joined the musicians' union because there was already a member with the same name. His career on Broadway began in 1954 as an arranger, including the revival of Anything Goes (1962), The Golden Apple (1954) and The Fantasticks. His violin concerto premiered at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1964. He died May 31, 2018.
