Stories featuring people with disabilities or on the neurodivergent spectrum are still rare, especially in Korean dramas. Over the past two decades, however, certain shows have reshaped the genre with progressive leads and thoughtful explorations of friendships, relationships, and life’s complexities, earning devoted audiences both in Korea and abroad. Before Attorney Woo captured hearts and raised awareness about autism, a doctor named Park Si‑on tackled the challenges of being an autistic physician on screen.

Who is Park Si-on from Good Doctor?

In 2013, Good Doctor premiered in South Korea. Joo Won played Park Si‑on, a young man with autism and savant syndrome. Before Shaun Murphy, he was the first to bring to life the delicate role of a pediatric surgeon struggling to earn acceptance. Joo Won’s portrayal resonated deeply, winning awards and praise...

Beyond the Bar Review: Objection! This Show Is Guilty of Being Excellent
Image
In the gleaming towers of Seoul’s legal district, where ambition is the currency and billable hours are the gospel, Yullim Law Firm stands as a monument to cutthroat excellence. It is a place where careers are forged in fire or extinguished without a second thought.

Into this crucible walks Beyond the Bar, a legal procedural that understands the genre’s playbook but wisely bets its entire case on character. The series centers on the firm’s notoriously demanding litigation department, a place rookies avoid like a surprise deposition.

Here, the brilliant yet unpolished Kang Hyo-min must find her footing under the icy glare of her new boss, the formidable Yoon Seok-hoon. Their immediate dynamic is a classic clash of instinct versus intellect, of raw talent versus rigid discipline. It is a partnership that promises to be the main event, and the show smartly places it front and center from the opening scene.

Squid Game Let Player 456 Shine, But the Real Main Character Was Hiding In Plain Sight
Image
No spoiler content found.

When Squid Game first made its way to Netflix in 2021, it became an instant fan favorite show. It featured a total of 456 players who found themselves in a 6-game survival competition, where they could win a massive splash of cash that would change their lives. The catch? Only one of them gets to have the secret organization that has a strict tradition of minimal survivors.

Despite the show revolving around several players, at its heart, it centered around the life of Seong Gi-hun, who also happens to win the game in its premiere season. Thus, making the audience feel that he was the protagonist, but he turns out not to be, and it took 3 seasons of the show to realize this!

Squid Game Hid Its Protagonist in the Limelight of Player 456

For many fans, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), or Player 456, was the protagonist in the Squid Game...

Every Squid Game Character Who Could Return For David Fincher's Spin-Off Series
Image
Spoilers ahead for all three seasons of "Squid Game."

"Squid Game" has come to a close — well, the first series, anyway — and anyone who's watched the show before the third and final season probably assumed that the ending would be a real bloodbath. True to form, it was. After pretty much all of our favorite season 2 players fell throughout season 3, including Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), Lee Myung-gi (Im Si-wan), Kim Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri), Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-shim), and Park Yong-sik (Yang Dong-geun) — Players 120, 333, 222, 149, and 007, respectively — we're left to see what happens to Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the series protagonist who's left protecting Jun-hee's newborn baby in the final game.

Gi-hun pretty unequivocally dies after fighting with Myung-gi, the baby's father, resulting in Myung-gi's death. Broken by the games, he simply wanders and falls off of a pedestal and, considering that we see his dead body, the guy is definitely gone.

‘Squid Game’ Creator Breaks Down Season 3 Finale, Spinoffs and Why He Changed the Ending
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 3.

No matter what you may have seen on social media, “Squid Game” Season 3 is the definite end of the series. But series creator, writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk is open to telling more stories in this universe.

“The reason I had Cate Blanchett in that scene at the end, it came from a place where I just wanted an impactful ending. It wasn’t anything to hint at a Season 4 or anything like that,” Hwang told TheWrap.

Blanchett appears briefly in the final moments of the very last episode of “Squid Game.” After the final game, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) travels to Los Angeles to give Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) daughter her late father’s belongings and winnings. As he drives away, he spots a woman in a suit, portrayed by Blanchett, playing a game of ddakji with a disheveled man.

Squid Game Season 3 Finally Puts Its Organ Trade Storyline To Good Use
Image
Attention, all players: This article contains spoilers for "Squid Game" season 3, episode 1 -- "Keys and Knives."

As entertainingly horrible as Netflix's "Squid Game" can be, the show does suffer from one meandering storyline. Well, all right -- two meandering storylines, if you include Detective Hwang Jun-ho's (Wi Ha-joon) endless, tension-breaking boat trips. The one I'm talking about here, however, is the organ trade arc, which inexplicably returned for "Squid Game" season 2 only to tread water throughout its seven episodes.

"Squid Game" season 2 is both exciting and underwhelming, and the return of the show's most disgusting storyline certainly belongs in the latter category. Throughout the season, the black market organ trader subplot comes across as a weird leftover from season 1, where it tied into Jun-ho's island-infiltrating storyline and fell by the wayside when the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) found out about it. The sophomore season's revelation that the Front Man's...

After months of keeping fans on their toes, Season 3 of Squid Game wrapped up the thriller story that had kept fans on the edge and come up with ideas of their own. However, amidst the chaos of surviving the 6 brutal childhood games and winning 45.6 billion won, lie some hints and clever foreshadowing that unpack some hidden messages or clues concealed in plain sight.

Just like Season 2, the final season also features 6 quiet details that would have escaped even the most eagle-eyed fans of the show.

‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Delivers One Last Devastating Blow and a Shocking Path Forward: TV Review
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the series finale of “Squid Game,” now streaming on Netflix.

“Squid Game,” Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, has come to a devastating end. Helmed by creator/writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the thriller follows Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who won the games in Season 1, and then came back to them in Season 2 with the hopes of infiltrating them from the inside out and dismantling them forever. Upon returning to the game island, Gi-hun naively assumed he had the upper hand. Yet, by the end of the second season, the former gambling addict realized that in these particular tournaments, the house always wins. The final season is still deeply disturbing and ultraviolent, but it’s much more of a continuation of the second season than a distinct entity. Still, Season 3 puts a bow on this chapter of the phenomenon while paving the way for a new,...

‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Ending Explained: Who Won?
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 3.

Gi-hun’s return to the Squid Game was always destined to be a big deal. But nothing could prepare fans for the war between inner goodness and capitalistic greed that is the series finale of this Netflix original.

Because this is “Squid Game” we’re talking about, no one had a happy ending. But between the highest stakes fight to date and a twist that’s practically begging for a spinoff, this finale delivered for fans of this high-octane show about deadly children’s games.

Here’s what you need to know about how “Squid Game” Season 3 ended.

Who won the Squid Game in Season 3?

The 45.6 billion won went to Player 222, aka Jun-hee’s (Jo Yu-ri) baby. As is always the case when it comes to this show, it took a lot of stress and trauma to get to that victory.

‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Recap: What to Remember Before Season 3
Image
With “Squid Game” Season 3, one of the biggest shows in TV history comes to a close. Back in 2021, the juggernaut Korean Netflix series first introduced audiences to its semi-dystopian but far too relatable death game, and the world clamored for more. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk originally planned for a limited series, but after “Squid Game” broke global records, he returned to the table for more, filming Season 2 and Season 3 back-to-back as a two-part ending for the series.

As a result, Season 3 is a lot more directly related to Season 2 than Season 2 was to Season 1. It’s set within the same games as Season 2, picking up directly after the finale, and features the same cast of players. So if you need a refresher before you dig into Season 3, here’s a comprehensive “Squid Game” Season 2 recap with all the details you might have forgotten.

'Dark Nuns' Review: Exorcism Gets a Proper Film
Image
Dark Nuns eschews simplicity and tired horror genre tropes in a meticulously crafted exorcism thriller that takes its subject matter seriously. A sequel of sorts to the 2015 South Korean film The Priests, director Kwon Hyeok-jaeintroduces a pair of diametrically different female protagonists destined to battle a terrifying demon while confronting skepticism, misogyny, and their own personal misgivings. They must learn to trust each other and their faith in a race against time with a boy's precious life at stake.

Sister Junia (Song Hye-kyo) arrives at a dilapidated warehouse on a dark and foreboding night. She calmly smokes a cigarette as blood-curdling screams pierce the air. Several priests struggle to hold down a writhing and cursing child. Their incantations have no effect as the demon unleashes his evil power. Junia fearlessly enters the room and pours a bucket of holy water over the boy while screaming for the beast to release him.

'It Would Be Most Heartbreaking': Squid Game Star Teases Gi-hun's Dark Turn in Season 3
Image
Gi-hun's attempt to overturn Squid Game was foiled in the Season 2 finale. Actor Lee Seo-hwan said Gi-hun might resort to unspeakable acts now that he's more desperate than ever.

Lee Seo-hwan's dark theory for Squid Game Season 3 includes Gi-hun's villain arc. Speaking to Radio Times, Lee said his character Jung-bae's death might have pushed Gi-hun over the edge. "I know nothing about Season 3, but as a viewer and a fan myself, I think there could be three possibilities," he mused. "One would be Gi-hun losing all hope, and the second, him becoming even more vengeful. But the third possibility would be him becoming vengeful towards the players, not the people behind the game." That last possibility just stoked one fan theory that Gi-hun would become the next Front Man.

10 Most Unpredictable TV Shows Where You Can Never Guess What Happens Next
Image
Many successful TV shows attract loyal fan bases who are excited to tune into something similar with each new episode, expecting a comforting cast of familiar characters, locations, and plot lines to appear on the screen. While this may work for some television programs, other notable shows draw in audiences due to their unpredictable nature and fast twists.

For viewers of these shows, investment stems from the compelling nature of their storylines, which can rarely be guessed ahead of time. As a result, fans journey alongside the characters in the show, blind to what will occur confusion, so that they can experience moments of highs and lows, and at times confusion, in real time. For example, shows like Donald Glover's Atlanta seamlessly switch in genre and tone with each new episode, while series like David Lynch's Twin Peaks aren't afraid to devolve, boldly plunging the story line into chaos.

Squid Game Season 2 Star Addresses Backlash Over Thanos Casting
Image
Squid Game Season 2 star Choi Seung-hyun has addressed his casting as the character Choi Su-bong/Thanos in the hit Netflix series. Also known as T.O.P, the K-Pop star and actor was involved in a marijuana-use scandal in 2017 that halted his career. His acting in the new Squid Game season has met with acclaim, even as he had to do limited promotion and press for the comeback because of the controversy surrounding his casting.

Squid Game Season 2 introduced Thanos as a cash-strapped former rapper with a drug problem. In an interview with The Korea Times, Seung-hyun finally discussed the role, which eerily mirrors his former real-life struggle. He revealed his initial hesitance, only agreeing to play the character at the insistence of the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, to whom he remains grateful. "The offer to play Thanos was a daunting proposition. The character mirrored my past, reflecting aspects I'd rather keep hidden,...

'Squid Game’ Season 2's Biggest Mistake Was Killing Off The Recruiter
Image
Squid Game’s victims never need an autopsy. We all know what killed them. However, the show itself deserves a post-modern. What happened to the once-great Korean thriller? While not terrible, the recently concluded second chapter hasn't generated as much talk as the first. Part of that concerns the widespread perception that the show didn’t need to continue. According to many fans (and a few critics), Gi-hun’s story was better suited for a miniseries.

Squid Game Creator Explains Why New Season 2 Character Is Named Thanos
Image
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has explained why a fan-favorite Season 2 character portrayed by Choi Seung-hyun is named Thanos. Bearing the same name as the popular purple-skinned Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, one would be forgiven for believing the character inspired the purple-haired Squid Game contestant's name.

In an interview presented by Still Watching Netflix on YouTube where he and series star Lee Jung-jae reacted to TikTok clips inspired by the show, Hwang revealed why he chose the name for Seung-hyun's rapper character. Hwang intended for Thanos to transcend South Korean popularity and become an international sensation. "The reason I named the character Thanos, It doesn't really suit a rapper as a name, was to design him to be a character fans worldwide could love. But I am so grateful he is getting this much love,' he explained.
