Oh My Goodness! Review: Pedaling Faith and Folly
Image
A drone’s quiet hum gives way to a radiant sweep over the French Jura, where rolling emerald hills cradle a lone convent. In that first breath of light, Sister Béatrice twirls beneath a cloudless sky—an ode to The Sound of Music, yet tinged with something more unsettled: the fragile joy of souls adrift.

At its heart, Oh My Goodness! asks how faith and folly might collide when five Benedictine nuns sign up for a local cycling race, chasing a €25,000 prize to restore a crumbling nursing home. Their venture feels almost absurd—habits against handlebars—but beneath the slapstick spills a contemplative undercurrent: what drives us to pedal toward salvation, whether divine or earthly?

Director Laurent Tirard wraps this frothy caper in bright laughter, the pace brisk at just under ninety minutes. A swift montage of training scenes punctuates the narrative, each pratfall and sabotaged wheel delivering both comic...

Elisa discusses a journalist who overstepped boundaries, even going so far as to speak with her mother. The interviewer also brings up her social media presence and that she’s even posted a video of herself crying.

As her questions become more accusatory and badgering, Elisa points out...

Charlie Chaplin has left an indelible mark in world cinema with his comedy films. Born in London in 1889, Chaplin was forced to provide for his family after his father died and his mother had fallen sick. His career kicked off on stage, where he played the character The Tramp and grabbed the audience’s attention. He went on to become a movie actor and won over viewers with films like The Kid, The Gold Rush, and City Lights.

It wasn’t just his movies that gained worldwide attention. Chaplin’s personal life was also under a massive spotlight. He was married four times and had eleven children. The Meaning Behind Azraels Biblical Title, Explained
Image
After bowing theatrically in September, E.L. Katz's religious horror movie Azrael is poised to join Shudder on October 25, 2024. A perfect Halloween watch, the film stars Samara Weaving as Azrael, a woman who escapes captivity from a pious cult of wicked worshipers and is systematically stalked by the members for a ritual sacrifice. Of course, beyond the protagonist's namesake, the movie title has an angelic/demonic connotation that bears further scrutiny.

In addition to parsing the mythological meaning of the movie's title, it's worth explaining how the twisted plot plays into biblical lore and reinforces the eternal struggle between good and evil. Far from only the protagonist's moniker, Azrael has a religious historical subtext that dovetails into the devious horror story.

Sylvester Stallones Western Show Is Perfect For Tombstone Fans And This Character Proves It
Image
Sylvester Stallone's Tulsa King is a great follow-up to Kurt Russell's Tombstone, and one actor who appears in both proves why. In Tulsa King, Stallone plays Dwight Manfredi, a New York mobster who was banished to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to set up a new criminal empire out West. While he was there, Dwight created a huge network of allies and enemies that includes the entire cast of Tulsa King. While Dwight's mobster background is unique, both he and Tulsa King are very similar to Wyatt Earp and Tombstone.

There are quite a few threads that connect Tombstone and Tulsa King. Both the movie and show were based on real-life stories, like the real Cowboys gang of Tombstone and the true mafioso story Tulsa King is based on. The similarities don't end there, however, as both Tombstone and Tulsa King feature major actors - Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone respectively...

8 Classic Biopics About Historical Figures From Abraham Lincoln to Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Image
Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

The 2024 Academy Awards showed just how popular a biopic can be amongst voters with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer netting Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Actors and actresses do almost anything to become the real-life person they portray in a biopic, from working with...

A Look at the Big Fantastic Four Cast Announcement
Image
This past Wednesday Marvel Studios made a very special casting announcement via their social media platforms. It was a gift much sweeter and tasty than any Valentine’s Day candy sampler. And it’s been in the works for nearly five years. That’s when Disney officially purchased Fox Studios, which finally brought one of the most celebrated Marvel Comics into the “fold”. In the years before the 2008 launch of Marvel Studios, some of their characters were licensed out to several different studios. Sony still has Spidey, while Daredevil, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four were then at Fox. Dd was brought back in with the Netflix series (and a new Disney+ Maxi-series soon), and Deadpool & Wolverine will rule this July, all the while fans were clamoring for a “new take” on the “first family” of Marvel. Studio head Kevin Feige has teased it at a couple of Comicon appearances,...

Ridley Scott's Napoleon Sets Course for Streaming Debut
Image
Ridley Scott's Napoleon is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on March 1. The film offers a visually stunning but incomplete look at the French emperor's life and military feats. Despite lukewarm box office performance, the film shines in epic battle scenes and lead actors' performances. Streaming release on Apple TV+ opens doors for wider audience reach and potential for greater appreciation.

Apple TV+ is set to release Ridley Scott's Napoleon, a historical epic featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic French ruler, on March 1. Initially released in theaters in November 2023, the film documenting Napoleon Bonaparte's life and career was subsequently made available for rental and purchase on video-on-demand platforms beginning January 9, per Apple.

Napoleon pairs Phoenix with Vanessa Kirby, who plays his lover, Josephine. Although the film featured a star-studded cast and came from Scott, known for his visually stunning epics, it experienced a lukewarm box office performance and received mixed reviews.

‘Napoleon’s’ Oscar-Nominated Production And Costume Designers On The Challenges Of Ridley Scott’s Latest Epic – Contenders Film: The Nominees
Image
The Oscar-nominated artisans from Ridley Scott’s epic Napoleon joined me as part of Apple Original Films’ presentations at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event. Veteran production designer Arthur Max and costume designers Janty Yates and David Crossman talked extensively about what it was like to work with Sir Ridley on the ambitious, large-scale production that saw Joaquin Phoenix play Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby his wife Josephine.

With six major battles, hundreds of extras and several challenging locations this was no walk in the park. But for the 85-year-old Scott it is quite common, and Max and Yates have both been through this drill before. In fact, Yates won an Oscar for her work on Scott’s Oscar Best Picture-winning Gladiator in 2001.

For Max, who had to re-create an entirely different country — the film shot in England and Malta — it was not easy.

“Napoleon” on AppleTV+
Released theatrically November 22, 2023, director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" feature, starring Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the 'Emperor' of the French as seen through the eyes of his wife 'Josephine' (Vanessa Kirby), streams March 1, 2024 on AppleTV+:

"...the new film is described as a personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of the addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, 'Josephine'.

"The film will also capture Napoleon’s famous battles, his relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader, war criminal and war visionary..."

Napoleon Bonaparte rose to prominence during the latter stages of the 'French Revolution' and its associated wars in Europe. As 'Napoleon I', he was 'Emperor' of the French from 1804 to 1815.

His legal reform, the 'Napoleonic Code', has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide,...

Ridley Scott in talks to direct Bee Gees movie after wrapping production on Gladiator 2
Image
Deadline reports that Ridley Scott is in negotiations to direct a movie about the Bee Gees, the iconic musical group formed by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.

Ridley Scott recently wrapped production on the Gladiator sequel, and in true Ridley Scott fashion, he’s already looking for another project. I wish I had half his energy. Should Scott close the deal to helm the Bee Gees movie for Paramount Pictures, he would also produce through his Scott Free banner along with Michael Pruss. John Logan (Alien: Covenant) has penned the script for the project.

At first glance, a movie about the Bee Gees may not seem like something that screams Ridley Scott, but the project would actually be a full-circle moment for the director. Back when he was getting started, Scott had...

Napoleon to debut on Apple TV+ on 1st March
Ridley Scott
Strap on your bayonets and make a noise like a horse – Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is heading to Apple TV+ in just a few short weeks. Don’t wash.

When Ridley Scott’s Napoleon arrived in cinemas last year, the icy (and slightly weird) historical epic proved as divisive as the European map its namesake redrew.

It also proved a bit of a conundrum at the box office. While for decades, a film making $220m from a budget potentially reaching the $200m mark would have been labeled a flop, like Killers Of The Flower Moon before it, the historical epic’s cinematic performance was all more or less free money for a movie initially greenlit to bring eyeballs to Apple’s shiny new(ish) streaming service.

Read more: Napoleon | Can historical epics save the box office?

Well, those eyeballs will finally be on their way. The tech giant turned movie...

Sunny Chan
Film Review: Table for Six 2 (2024) by Sunny Chan Wing-Sun
Sunny Chan
With its charming ensemble cast, Sunny Chan's ‘Table for Six' mixed slapstick comedy with melodrama, creating a number one box office hit in Hong Kong in 2022. The original film explored romantic complications and family issues, and most of this film took place at a single apartment dinner table. More ambitious in scope, the sequel ‘Table for Six 2' has an expansive budget, the same charismatic cast and takes place in a multitude of locations, replacing the apartment dinners with three respective wedding ceremonies. Despite this new makeover, ‘Table for Six 2' feels lackluster in script and story when compared to its predecessor, with only its stellar cast keeping it alive.
