Lee Daniels Takes The Brian Banks Story
Still riding high on the critical and commercial success of The Butler (officially Lee Daniels’ The Butler, in case you, for some reason, equate that title with a now-lost 1916 silent short film with the same name, as Warner Bros. bizarrely seems to think you would), Lee Daniels has locked down his next directorial gig. The Precious helmer will tackle The Brian Banks Story, which was previously the subject of a 2012 60 Minutes piece.

The film tells the tragic story of Brian Banks, a high school football player who was on the verge of playing for USC when his life was turned inside out by a false accusation of rape from a classmate. Banks maintained his innocence but was sent to prison as part of a hastily-made plea bargain which resulted in him serving over five years and two months in prison, five years on parole and registering as a sex offender.

Lee Daniels to Direct Film Based on Brian Banks' Story (Promising Athlete Falsely Convicted of Rape)
2 years ago, we profiled a then upcoming documentary project on Brian Banks, when he raised over $47,000 to tell his story of a promising football career that was derailed by a rape accusation that would eventually be recanted by the accuser, who admitted she lied about the entire incident - but only after Banks was convicted and spent over 5 years in prison, for a crime that he didn't commit, and had to register as a sex offender. As Banks himself said 2 years ago, when he sought to raise money to produce a documentary that would tell his story: "When I was 16 years old, I was just like any other typical high school junior, but I played football for one of...

Watch: '60 Minutes' Report About Brian Banks, Whose Story Lee Daniels Will Turn Into A Feature Film
It's been a year since Lee Daniels dropped "Lee Daniels' The Butler," and he's yet to make a move on his next feature. For the moment, his eye is on the Fox hip hop drama pilot "Empire" which is in post-production, but the filmmaker is putting another movie into the Crock-pot and letting it simmer. THR reports that Daniels has signed up to direct "The Brian Banks Story," which, as you might guess, is about Brian Banks. But who is this person? Well, Banks was a star football player on track for what many expected would be an amazing sports career, until he was accused by a classmate of rape. Banks plead "no contest" to the charge on the advice of his lawyer who thought he wouldn't stand a chance with a jury, spending five years in jail. Banks maintained his innocence and details later emerged completely exonerating the football player of any wrongdoing.
