Creature Commandos offers a dynamic soundtrack that provides an explosive introduction to James Gunn’s Dcu. Creature Commandos is the first official entrant in James Gunn’s Dcu Chapter One: Gods and Monsters - though certain elements from Gunn’s other DC works are considered canon. The series offers a starkly different rendition of the typical superhero romp, transporting audiences to a world of classic horror movie monsters and spooky castles, with suitably dynamic music to match.

The Creature Commandos soundtrack employs a combination of original score and compiled songs. Both of these aspects of the soundtrack are rooted in Eastern European folk music and the dark cabaret genre. Gunn even referenced The Dresden Dolls and Gogol Bordello as major influences on the show’s music, referring to them as a musical mood board for Creature Commandos season 1.

The opening credits of "Creature Commandos" is a roll-call of the offbeat cast set to classic Venezuelan song "Moliendo Café." The last figure in the call is series creator, and new DC Universe architect, James Gunn. The animated Gunn is sitting at his laptop, writing the script for the "Creature Commandos" episode we're about to see. If you thought Gunn would be hands off with the show, think again. The series has his thumbprint over each key frame of animation and syllable of dialogue.

So far, "Creature Commandos" has the pop music needle drops that Gunn has been writing his superhero movies to since "Guardians of the Galaxy." The series' second episode, "The Tourmaline Necklace," shows the century long history between Frankenstein (David Harbour) and his Bride (Indira Varma) with a montage set to Gogol Bordello's "American Wedding.

Jesse Malin has released the new single “Argentina,” written while the singer-songwriter was rehabbing from his spinal stroke in Buenos Aires. Additionally, actor-comedian Fred Armisen, filmmaker/musician Jim Jarmusch, Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz, and more have been added to one of Malin’s upcoming benefit concerts at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

Malin, a staple of the NYC punk scene over the past three decades as a solo artist and as frontman of D Generation, was paralyzed from the waist down when he suffered the spinal stroke at a restaurant in May of 2023.

He has since started walking with the aid of a walker, but still has a long way to go in his recovery. He returned to perform last month on CBS Saturday Morning, where he gave “Argentina” its live debut. Now, he has released the official studio version.

We quickly learn these are the words of a traveling magician, the titular “Mr. K” (Crispin Glover), the first of several nods to the singular writer Franz Kafka. He performs his outdated magic in outdated clubs filled with diners who are too busy concentrating on their meals and conversation to pay attention to his wondrous craft. After packing up his battered bag of ticks, he leaves the dreary cafe, finding himself outside a decaying Victorian estate.

Writer-director Tallulah H. Schwab focuses on the tactility of the landscape around this estate. The verdant greens of the grass. The rustling of the leaves in the trees. You can even hear the ants as they crawl through the ruddy earth. The camera zooms closely on the insects, until their universe fills up the whole frame.

It started, as musical happenings sometimes do, with SoundCloud. About five years ago, Matt Sullivan, head of the indie label Light in the Attic, was turned on to a playlist that featured, as he recalls, “funky Seventies stuff, ambient modern classical, and disco.” A few songs reminded him of Cocteau Twins and other bands associated with the British label 4Ad. “It was all over the place,” he says, “but I fell in love with it.”

A covers compilation benefitting the relief fund of singer-songwriter Jesse Malin, who suffered a spinal stroke last year, is set for release on September 20th. The latest single to be released from the effort is Billie Joe Armstrong’s cover of Malin’s “Black Haired Girl.”

Laurie Anderson is back to announce Amelia, her first album in six years, due out on August 30th via Nonesuch. She’s also offered the album’s first preview, “Road to Mandalay.”

Amelia is a concept album comprised of 22 songs tracking the renowned aviator Amelia Earhart’s final flight. Laurie Anderson previously conceived Amelia for a performance at Carnegie Hall in 2000, and the artist recently updated the composition and performed it across Europe. She recorded Amelia with the Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno, who were conducted by Dennis Russell Davies — collaborators included Anohni, Gabriel Cabezas, Rob Moose, Ryan Kelly, Martha Mooke, Marc Ribot, Tony Scherr, Nadia Sirota, and Kenny Wolleson.

Steve Albini, the legendary record producer and engineer behind Nirvana’s In Utero, Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, and countless other classic alternative rock albums, has died of a heart attack. He was 61 years old.

News of Albini’s death was confirmed to Consequence via a staff member at his recording studio, Electrical Audio in Chicago.

Preferring the term “engineer” over “producer,” Albini was lauded for his minimalist approach to recording sessions and focus on capturing the natural sound of musicians’ performances. As a singer and guitarist in his own right, Albini also led the bands Shellac and Big Black.

Albini was born in Pasadena, California, on July 22nd in 1962. He went to college at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and spent most of his career based in Chicago, where he founded Electrical Audio.

His music career essentially started as singer-guitarist of Big Black, a band he formed while still a student at Northwestern.

Jesse Malin will be the first to tell you that he owes much of his worldview, musical and otherwise, to Bad Brains singer H.R Now, with H.R. dealing with his own medical issues, Malin is directing fans toward a benefit concert for the singer while also announcing his own new project: the concert film and live album Chasing the Light.

On Wednesday, a host of musicians came together to honor late Irish legends Shane MacGowan and Sinead O’Connor with a tribute concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Most notably, O’Connor’s daughter, Roisin Waters, paid tribute to her mother with a stirring performance of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

For the last 37 years, Tibet House US has celebrated the Tibetan New Year (Losar) with an all-star benefit concert at Carnegie Hall. Revered as one of New York City’s longest-running cultural events, this year’s concert took place on Monday night (February 26th) with performances from the likes of Joan Baez, Maggie Rogers, Maya Hawke, Gogol Bordello, and many more.

An all-star Sinéad O’Connor and Shane MacGowan tribute concert will take place in New York City this spring.

The one-night-only tribute show goes down just after St. Patrick’s Day on March 20th at Carnegie Hall, and will feature performances from Cat Power, The Mountain Goats, Glen Hansard, Dropkick Murphys, Amanda Palmer, David Gray, Bettye Lavette, Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz, Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming, Kat Edmonson, and the Resistance Revival Chorus.

The occasion comes after O’Connor’s passing at 56 in July of 2023 and MacGowan’s death at 65 in November of 2023. Billed as “Sinéad & Shane at Carnegie Hall,” the tribute will celebrate the two Irish icons with covers of both artists’ songs.

The lineup for the 2024 Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival has been announced, featuring headliners Devo, Madness, and Descendents. The 24th edition of the annual extravaganza will take place May 24th-27th at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center.

Joining the headliners on the bill are Punk Rock Bowling first-timers Billy Bragg, Gogol Bordello, Rocket From the Crypt, The Chats, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, Destroy Boys, 999, Scowl, Bratmobile, Snooper, Cosmic Psychos, and more. Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hütz is launching his new label, Casa Gogol Records, with a single benefitting Ukraine. Hütz recruited Bernard Sumner (New Order, Joy Division) for a cover of Angelic Upstarts’ “Solidarity.”

The pair’s take on the punk song comes in two forms, remixed by each artist respectively. Both Gogol Bordello’s “Unity” mix and Sumner’s “Right to Freedom” mix match their distinct genre disciplines, with the latter turning the track into a new wave dream.

“This is a particularly meaningful collaboration for us,” Hütz shared in a statement.

Gogol Bordello's international makeup is one of their greatest strengths, as each member brings the identity of their musical culture into the band. The documentary Scream of My Blood focuses on Eugene Hütz's journey from Ukraine to the United States, as well as the immigration stories of the other band members. Ministry have unveiled the track “Just Stop Oil” as the latest single from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses, which is set for release on March 1st.

The new song follows the album’s first single, “Goddamn White Trash,” which arrived in August along with the announcement of the new LP. As is evident in the title, “Just Stop Oil” is political in tone, with Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen stating, “Ministry approves this message and the movement behind it. Enough is Enough!”

While “Just Stop Oil” doesn’t feature any guests, other tracks on the album boast appearances by Pepper Keenan, Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello), and Jello Biafra.

Ministry will support the album with a previously announced headlining 2024 North American tour featuring support from Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly. The outing kicks off in late February, with tickets available here.

Ministry have announced their 16th studio album, Hopiumforthemasses, due March 1st, 2024. In advance of the LP, the industrial legends have offered up the video for lead single “Goddamn White Trash” featuring Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity.

In line with frontman Al Jourgensen’s M.O. as of late, Hopiumforthemasses looks to be another politically-charged rampage. The song titles say it all: “Just Stop Oil,” “Aryan Embarrassment,” etc.

“Just like you or anybody else, I’m simply a passenger in this lifetime,” commented Jourgensen in a press release. “I’m watching social changes, political changes, and economic changes, and I comment on them because I do have a First Amendment right. A lot of people say artists and athletes should shut up and play ball. No, I’m on this trip too.”

Gogol Bordello has been mixing Ukrainian folk songs with rock and roll for over two decades. Still, the current war in Eastern Europe makes frontman Eugene Hütz’s heritage more relevant than ever. That’s why, in the first scene of Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story, the beat of drums is overlapped with the disturbing sound of bombs exploding on Ukrainian soil. Directed by Nate Pommer and Eric Weinrib, the documentary retraces the history of the punk group while also discussing how music is a powerful tool for preserving culture, denouncing injustices, and lifting people’s spirits in challenging times.

Some things are best in small doses. Cheesecake and Ketamine come to mind. The more-is-not-necessarily-better conundrum confronts the creators of “Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story,” a Vice News documentary about the punk folk band Gogol Bordello and Eugene Hütz, the band’s charismatic lead singer. Hütz also doubles as a Ukrainian activist/raconteur/resident deep thinker. He can be a lot. Audiences’ appreciation of the doc will depend on their patience with Hütz, a man whose intentions are good even if his volume is always set to 11.

Directors Nate Pommer and Eric Weinrib have the difficult task of trying to explain a 24-year-old cult band in 99 minutes. It is very much an immigrant story. There’s an early shot of Hütz swaggering onstage with the band — a mélange of violinists, drummers and guitarists — and baptizing the audience with his beer.

But soon the film drops into Hütz’s origin story.

Eugene Hütz, founder and frontman with U.S. gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, would likely to have ended up a painter wearing “dirty pants and long hair” had his parents not left the Soviet Union when he was 16.

“I would probably have become a painter, as there was more of a path paved in that in my family,” he says. “I was drawing most of my childhood and my uncle – Mikhail Mykolayev – is a pretty well-known painter who still lives in Kyiv.”

Fresh from playing a brief, impromptu solo guitar gig at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, following the international premiere of a new documentary about the band, “Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story,” Hütz fits the bill, although his khaki cargo pants are not paint spattered.

An official trailer is available for a new music documentary titled Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story, about the band Gogol Bordello and its lead singer, a Ukrainian punk rocker named Eugene Hütz. This premiered at both the Tribeca Film Festival and Karlovy Vary Film Festival in Czechia recently. It's a profile of Eugene and his life, growing up as a Ukrainian living abroad, and as a musician for this legendary gypsy punk band with a cult following. Co-director Nate Pommer describes the film's layers: "On the one hand, it is an instruction manual on how not to give up and pursue your dreams; on the other hand, it is a tribute to Ukrainian culture." Hütz recently appeared at the Kviff fest and played a concert at the premiere.

Vice News has released the trailer for its documentary “Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story,” which will be showing at Karlovy Vary Film Festival next week.

The film had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival earlier in June and Nate Pommer, who directed alongside Eric Weinrib, was awarded a special jury mention. The jury said the film was being recognized “for the enduring use of art as a weapon against cant and authoritarianism.”

The jury added: “We are grateful to the director for translating Gogol Bordello’s rebellious joy and rage at remaining human and vibrant in the face of everything time has thrown in its path.”

Ukrainian-born musician Eugene Hütz, leader of the New York-bred band Gogol Bordello, readily admits he first found it shocking when he came across images of his old friends armed to the teeth in battle in the current war with Russia. “It was particularly alarming that somebody you used to jam and rock out with is now on TikTok with a rocket launcher,” he said. “But after that initial blow, it quickly settled in that this is part of the historical DNA of Ukrainians. Being a self-sufficient warrior is at the center of our identity. This has always been in us.”

Hütz’s life epitomizes that. His defiant spirit began in childhood, when his family struggled to resist the soul-crushing influence of the then Soviet Union in the 70s and 80s.

Ukrainian punk rockers Gogol Bordello have recruited former Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra and a cast of punk and hardcore all-stars for a new collaborative charity single called “United Strike Back.” Stream it below.

The track also features Green Day’s Tre Cool, Fugazi’s Joe Lally, and Ministry’s Monte Pittman, as well as Agnostic Front’s Roger Miret, Kazka’s Oleksandra “Sasha” Zaritska, and Puzzled Panther. Over pulverizing guitars, Gogol Bordello’s lead singer Eugene Hütz is joined on vocals by Biafra, Sasha, Miret, and Puzzled Panther.

“That’s the way your palace crumbles/ That’s the way house of cards tumbles,” Hütz, Biafra, and Miret sing on the chorus. “That’s the way dictator story ends/ As we stand with brothers sisters/ And lovers and our friends.”

The 22nd edition of NYC’s Tribeca Film Festival appears to have star power to spare, with Michael Shannon, John Slattery, Chelsea Peretti, David Duchovny, Jennifer Esposito, Randall Park, real-life couple Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe and Steve Buscemi among those with new films premiering among the 100-plus features screening this year from June 7 through June 18.

A few interesting stats: There are 43 first-time directors and 29 directors returning to Tribeca with their latest projects. 41% of all feature films are directed by women and, for the first time, more than half of competition feature films are directed by women. And 39 of the feature films represented are directed by Bipoc filmmakers, including two indigenous filmmakers.

Vice News announced today the feature documentary Scream of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story will premiere at the festival on June 13, a film Vice describes as “a wild punk-rock-doc that explodes off the screen.”

Scream of My Blood, directed by Nate Pommer and Eric Weinrib, centers around musician Eugene Hütz, leader of the punk band Gogol Bordello, who immigrated to the United States from Ukraine as a kid. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of his native country last February, the filmmaking team followed him as he returned to Ukraine with his band to perform for Ukrainian soldiers.

The 22nd edition of the Tribeca Festival unveiled a 2023 lineup with a record number of female helmers and heavy on films directed by actors like Chelsea Peretti’s First Time Female Director, John Slattery thriller Maggie Moore(s) with Tina Fey and Jon Hamm, David Duchovny’s Bucky F*cking Dent and Steve Buscemi’s The Listener.

Marvel also screens its first original documentary, Stan Lee by David Gelb, as the fest unspools June 7-18 in New York City. Also making an appearance: Downtown Owl by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater, and Eric Larue by Michael Shannon.

In all, 109 feature, narrative, documentary and animated films from 127 directors across 36 countries will showcase emerging and household names.

Tribeca is expanding its Midnight offering this year, and will also present its second annual Human/Nature award for environmental storytelling to world-premiering Common Ground by Rebecca and Josh Tickell.

Foo Fighters are set to open a new 450-person capacity venue in Washington, DC, built as a replica of the original 9:30 Club.

The Atlantis, which sits next door to the current iteration of the 9:30 Club, will open its doors on May 30th with Foo Fighters, kicking off a run of 44 special shows. The venue’s calendar also promises shows headlined by The Walkmen, Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, X, Tegan and Sara, Jenny Lewis, Spoon, Billy Idol, Maggie Rogers, Bartees Strange, Portugal. the Man, Jeff Tweedy, and more.

Boygenius have joined the lineup for the annual Tibet House benefit concert, which is taking place tomorrow, March 1, at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The trio of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker join a lineup that includes Laurie Anderson, New Order’s Bernard Sumner and Tom Chapman, Arooj Aftab, Allison Russell, Gogol Bordello, Tenzin Choegyal, Saori Tsukada, and more. Composer Philip Glass will serve as the evening’s artistic director, while the Philip Glass Ensemble will also perform.

Gogol Bordello, the punk group led by Kyiv-born singer Eugene Hütz, played a secret show for an audience of Ukrainian soldiers last week.

Vice reports that the unannounced concert took place at an undisclosed location near the frontlines of the Russian invasion. About 50 soldiers witnessed the gig, including an outfit of elite special forces troops wearing green berets.

One of the most high-profile benefit shows held to date in support of Ukraine took place in New York last night. Taking place at City Winery’s Manhattan location, the event featured performances by Gogol Bordello (whose leader, Eugene Hütz, was born in Ukraine), Patti Smith, the Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, Suzanne Vega, Magnetic Fields auteur Stephin Merritt, reggae vet Matisyahu, Jesse Malin, O.A.R.’s Marc Roberge, and indie singer-songwriter Lady Lamb, all showing up to raise funds for financial and humanitarian relief in the embattled nation.

Near the end of a November show at Dallas listening room the Kessler, singer-songwriter Joshua Ray Walker threw the assembled crowd for a loop when he brought out his friends Ottoman Turks for a surprise three-song set of furious, fast-paced Texas punk. Music has been an incredibly important and distinctive element of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies so far, with Awesome Mix Vol. 1 and Awesome Mix Vol. 2 almost becoming characters in their respective movies. Now, director James Gunn has shared the mix that he listened to while making the first movie, which has been talked about for a long time but now, you can listen to it for yourself.

Taking to his Facebook page, James Gunn finally shared the Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 0 playlist via Spotify. This playlist was used while the first movie was in production. This was Gunn's personal playlist that he would use to help set the mood for certain scenes while filming. Here's what Gunn had to say about the playlist in his Facebook post.

The first round of horror films have been announced for the Colorado based horror festival Telluride Horror Show. This years lineup looks sweet and includes premieres and a special screening of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas with director Q&A! Check the list of films below.

The first wave of films is now live for the 2015 Telluride Horror Show, October 16-18 in picturesque Telluride, Colorado (elevation 8,750 ft.).

Most of the films will make their Colorado premieres at this year's festival or will screen fresh off their Fantastic Fest debuts. The festival will also feature a special screening of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas followed by a director Q&A.
