‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘The Wild Robot,’ and ‘Music by John Williams’ Win at the 2025 Cas Awards
Image
“A Complete Unknown,” “The Wild Robot” (which has been sweeping the guild and honorary society awards), and “Music by John Williams” were the live action, animation, and documentary winners at the 61st Cas Awards, held February 22 at the Beverly Hilton.

For TV, the Cinema Audio Society of sound mixers awarded “Masters of the Air,” “Shōgun,” and “The Bear” in the categories of non-theatrical/limited series, one-hour, and half-hour.

As previously announced, director Denis Villeneuve received the Cas Filmmaker Award and multi-award-winning sound mixer Tod A. Maitland Cas was honored with the Cas Career Achievement Award.

The Cas sound mixing win for “A Complete Unknown” is the first Oscar indicator for Best Sound; in four out of the last five years the Cas winner has matched the Oscar winner. Now we wait for the Mpse Golden Reel Awards to pick its sound editing winners this weekend for dialogue/Adr, effects/foley work,...

10 Years Before The Brutalist, Adrien Brody Gave a Great Performance in This Historical Miniseries
Image
Quick LinksHoudini Chronicles the Life of the Greatest Magician Who Ever LivedHow Historically Accurate Is Houdini?Adrien Brody Delivered an Unforgettable Performance as Harry Houdini

There has been plenty of hype surrounding The Brutalist lately, especially with its numerous Oscar nominations and many claiming that it features Adrien Brody’s best performance to date. Any fans of the performance that has earned him his second Oscar nomination might be curious to see what his role was that landed him his first-ever Emmy nomination. Houdini aired on the History channel in 2014, and chronicled the life of famed magician and escape artist, Harry Houdini, and featured Brody as the titular lead. During the time of its release, it was a major success, becoming the most-viewed miniseries of 2014 and even earning a total of seven Emmy Award nominations. Much of the acclaim went towards Brody's performance, which made it more than obvious just...

‘A Complete Unknown,’ ‘Gladiator II,’ ‘Wicked’ Land Cinema Audio Society Nominations
Image
The Cinema Audio Society (Cas) has nominated the sound teams behind A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II and Wicked in its live-action feature category for the 2025 Cas Awards celebrating excellence in sound mixing.

All five films have been Oscar shortlisted in the sound category, which since 2021 has encompassed both sound editing and mixing. The five additional shortlisted films are Alien: Romulus, Blitz, Emilia Pérez, Joker: Folie à Deux and The Wild Robot. Traditionally, the winner of the Cas award in the live-action feature category has mirrored the Academy Award winner for sound. However, last year, Tarn Willers and Johnnie Burn took home the Oscar for The Zone of Interest while Cas awarded Oppenheimer.

In the animated motion picture category, Cas nominated Inside Out 2, Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, The Wild Robot and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. Elton John: Never Too Late,...

2025 Cinema Audio Society nominations list: ‘Dune: Part Two’ and ‘Wicked’ make the cut, but not ‘Emilia Pérez’
Image
The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.

The Cas Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Now the Oscars present a single award for Best Sound. The Oscar champs since them have been Sound of Metal (2020), Dune: Part One...

Cinema Audio Society Nominations: ‘Wicked,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘Gladiator II’ in the Mix
Image
The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominees in seven categories for the 61st Annual Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing 2024. Sound mixing is meant to make a film’s environment, be it the most muted mumblecore world or the wildest, loudest fantasy, seem completely natural. Mixing requires specialized skill and artistry in the craft of sound, and Cas members review hundreds of projects to ensure the nominees truly reflect excellence in sound mixing in Motion Picture and Television entertainment.

The nominees they have chosen are, unsurprisingly, some of the most complex and musical film worlds of 2024, ones where the overall vibe is as important to get across as the story information and emotional resonance carried through dialogue, sound effects, songs, and score. “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked,” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” are among the feature nominees, while “The Wild Robot,” “Moana 2,” and “Inside Out 2” rank among the animated nominees.

'We Had All Lost a Patriarch': Mufasa Director Confirms Tribute to James Earl Jones in Lion King Prequel
Image
Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King will begin with a tribute to James Earl Jones featuring the late actor's voice. The title card for the film will read "In Remembrance."

Variety confirmed the tribute to Jones in an interview with Mufasa: The Lion King's director, Barry Jenkins. "It felt like we had all lost a patriarch. We had all lost this man who meant so much," Jenkins said of Jones' passing this September. "It felt like there was no way you could sit in this movie – go through an hour and 40 minutes — and not honor him in some way. You would be thinking about the ways in which you wanted to honor him, so it felt like we had to do it at the very front. The studio agreed right away, and we tried to find something that was very simple, but also very clear and very powerful."

Barry Jenkins on Honoring James Earl Jones in ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’s’ Opening Credits: ‘We Had All Lost a Patriarch’
Image
Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” begins with the voice of James Earl Jones, followed by a title card that reads, “In Remembrance.”

Jones, who died in September at 93 years old, originated the voice of King Mufasa in the 1994 Oscar-winning animated feature “The Lion King,” its direct-to-video sequels and the 2019 live-action remake. Jones did not return for the prequel, which opens in theaters on Dec. 20.

Barry Jenkins, who helmed “Mufasa,” tells Variety why he decided to open the movie with a tribute to the late actor. “When I think about what James Earl Jones means, not even just to me, but to global audiences — people know this — I grew up without a father figure, and you go in and you watch this art, you watch these films, sometimes these fathers in these movies become a stand-in for that,” he says. “They become these father figures.”

So, when Jones died, Jenkins explains,...

‘Black Bird’ Creates Uneasy Truths Through Performance, Pace, and Sound
Image
Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Apple TV+, for this edition, we look at how the editing, cinematography, and sound created the pulsing drama “Black Bird.”

Adapted from the book “In with the Devil” by James Keene and Hillel Levin, the Apple TV+ limited series “Black Bird” shines a disturbing light on murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer Larry Hall, who preyed on girls and women during the 1980s and ‘90s. Show creator Dennis Lehane (“Gone Baby Gone”) unravels the story, based on actual events, through a gripping, character-driven six episodes that redefine the psychological crime thriller genre.

The narrative examines the male psyche through the eyes of Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) and Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a high school football star turned con serving 10 years without parole...

How Amazon’s ‘The Underground Railroad’ Allowed Nature to Be a Sound Guide (Video)
Joel Edgerton, William Jackson Harper, Aaron Pierre, and Thuso Mbedu in The Underground Railroad (2021)
Ambient sound is a staple fixture of popular entertainment, except viewers often struggle to really hear it over the din. In Barry Jenkins’ Amazon limited series “The Underground Railroad,” adapted from the heralded Colson Whitehead book and told in 10 chapters of varying length, the experience of absorbing the atmosphere is unmistakable. As it charts the mystical, harrowing course of young Cora’s (Thuso Mbedu) journey through the escape of slavery in the 1800s South, viewers hear every deep breath, every crackle of fire, every crinkle of leaves, omnipresent crickets and bugs, and in the most gut-wrenching example, the unsettling resonance of a whip lashing into human flesh.

“I was born in Georgia and lived there for a little bit of my youth,” says sound supervisor Onnalee Blank, nominated for both sound editing and mixing at this year’s Emmys. “So, I was really into the history of slavery. It was...

Onnalee Blank just received her ninth and 10th Emmy nominations in the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories for her work as the sound supervisor and re-recording artist, respectively, on Amazon Prime’s 10-episode limited series “The Underground Railroad.” After accruing seven of her preceding eight bids for HBO’s concluded phenomenon “Game of Thrones,” Blank admits, “Something about getting recognized for my work that is not that show feels like, Ok, yes, I broke through that barrier.” In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Blank elaborates on her determination to subvert the tropes of a traditional slave narrative on “The Underground Railroad,” on her two Emmy episode submissions for the series, and on merging different genres, themes and ambiences on it.

How construction and cicada sounds wound up in Nicholas Britell’s ‘Underground Railroad’ score [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
Construction sites and cicadas are probably definitely not the first things you might think of as inspiration for a score, let alone the same score at that, but those were heavy influences and elements of Nicholas Britell‘s pieces for Amazon’s “The Underground Railroad,” his third collaboration with Barry Jenkins. One day, pre-pandemic, he got a text from Jenkins that was just an audio file.

“I listened to it. It sounded like drilling and construction equipment. I honestly had no idea what that was, really, that he was sending me,” Britell shares at Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts: TV Composers panel (watch above). “And a couple hours later, he texted and he just said, ‘Did you get what I sent?’ And immediately I knew what he was talking about. One of the really wonderful things about forging these longer-term creative partnerships is you really get a sense of the people you work with,...

Crafting the Sound and Rhythms of ‘The Underground Railroad’
Image
Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work that we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Amazon Studios, for this inaugural edition we talked to key members of “The Underground Railroad” post-production team, re-recording mixer/supervising sound editor Onnalee Blank, composer Nicholas Britell, and editor Joi McMillon about their work helping director Barry Jenkins adapt Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name into a 10-part limited series.

Unlike many of Barry Jenkins’ key collaborators on “The Underground Railroad,” Onnalee Blank was the rare department head who had years of experience working in television. She was quick to point out how different “The Underground Railroad” was compared to other episodic projects: On a series like “Game of Thrones,” for which Blank won three Emmys, once she created a location’s soundscape, it supplied a base that the...

Jamie Foxx at an event for Comment tuer son boss 2 (2014)
According to star Jamie Foxx, the upcoming movie Just Mercy has the scent of authenticity.

Let us explain. Foxx portrays real-life character Walter McMillian, who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of a white woman in Monroeville, Al. He was released in 1993 after spending six years on death row. Michael B. Jordan plays his attorney Bryan Stevenson on the Christmas Day release.

Cas Awards 2018: ‘Dunkirk’ Wins Top Sound Mixing Honor
Fionn Whitehead in Dunkerque (2017)
After losing the Mpse Award for sound editing, “Dunkirk” grabbed sound mixing honors Saturday night at the 54th Cas Awards at the Omni. Pixar’s “Coco” and National Geographic’s “Jane” took the animation and documentary prizes.

With the Oscars a week away, will Christopher Nolan’s audio tour-de-force win both sound editing and sound mixing? Or will it split with “Blade Runner 2049” or “Baby Driver”?

Meanwhile, the Sound Mixing team of “Black Mirror: USS Callister” took top honors for Television Movie or Mini-Series. Television-One Hour honors went to “Game of Thrones”: “Beyond the Wall,” while “Silicon Valley”: “”Mix Pre- 10T Recorder”-Con’” won the award for Television Series-Half Hour. “Rolling Stone: Stories from the Edge” won for Television Non-Fiction, Variety or Music Series or Specials.

“Darkest Hour” director Joe Wright earned the Cas Filmmaker Award, sound engineer Anna Behlmer (“Moulin Rouge!”) was honored with Cas Career Achievement Award,...

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land (2016)
As expected, “La La Land” came away with the live-action sound mixing award at Saturday’s 53rd Cinema Audio Society (Cas) Awards. Damien Chazelle’s valentine to Hollywood musicals is now a sure bet to win the Best Sound Mixing Oscar. (Sound Editing is still a race.)

Meanwhile, Pixar’s “Finding Dory” upset Disney’s “Zootopia” for animated feature honors. And HBO’S “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble” earned the first-ever Cas documentary award.

TV winners included “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” (movie or miniseries), “Game of Thrones,” which grabbed its fourth consecutive award for “Battle of the Bastards” (one-hour), “Modern Family: The Storm” (1/2-hour), and “Grease Live!” (specials),

Oscar-nominated sound engineer John Pritchett (“Road to Perdition,” “Memories of a Geisha”) received the Career Achievement Award and Jon Favreau won the Filmmaker Award for “The Jungle Book’s” innovative sound.

Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman ou (La Surprenante vertu de l'ignorance) (2014)
Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. Six of the last eight Cas winners have won the sound mixing Oscar. Check out the full list of Cas winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit.

Cinema Audio Society Thinks ‘Interstellar’ Sounds Just Fine
Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar (2014)
Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

“Interstellar” joined “American Sniper,” “Birdman,” “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Unbroken” in receiving nominations for the 2014 Cas Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing, which will be presented on Feb. 14 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Hell's bells, 'Interstellar' got a Cinema Audio Society sound mixing nomination
Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

Awards Season Continues With Visual Effects, Sound Mixing And Makeup Nominations
Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Ioncinephile of the Month: Destin Daniel Cretton
Ioncinema.com’s Ioncinephile of the Month feature focuses on an emerging filmmaker from the world of cinema. This August, we get to once again profile an American Independent filmmaker who had the wind blowing in his sails moments before he launched his micro-budgeted I Am Not a Hipster at Sundance in 2012. Before unleashing his sophomore film, the character-rich, emotionally textured Short Term 12 in March, Destin Daniel Cretton had won over the Sundance jury with the short film going by the same name (2009 Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking). Winner of the 2013 SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury Award (worth mentioning, of which I was a proud member of) and an Audience Award at a handful of fests since SXSW, its the folks at Cinedigm who’ll be launching the film in select theaters on August 23rd. Here is our profile on Destin Daniel Cretton and we’re lucky enough that...
