The First Ever Taskmaster Was a Very Different Beast
Image
As Alex Horne tells it, Taskmaster was born out of professional jealousy. In 2009, he became a parent and so broke with almost a decade of tradition by not taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe. That same year, his friend and former flatmate Tim Key won the festival’s top comedy award, for which Horne had been nominated in 2003.

At home and envious, Horne sent out emails inviting 20 comedians – including Key – to take part in a new competition in which he would set them a different task each month for a year. The results would be shared in a live performance at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe called The Taskmaster.

The result was organised chaos. An overdraft of comedians (a Fringe-specific collective noun) plus a pianist joined Horne on stage to reveal the results, set tie-break tasks, and eventually crown a winner.

“So this is The Taskmaster,” Horne told the crowd, “It...

Fun Things You Might Not Know About Richard Osman’s House of Games
Image
Is Richard Osman’s House of Games the perfect teatime quiz show? It’s certainly in contention. Silly, funny and warm, it makes very good company. The armchairs exude a sense of convivial relaxation. There are no flashing-lights podiums or tense burden of cash prizes, making it a wholly gentler experience than, say, The Chase. It keeps the same four contestants all week long, meaning that the kind of rapport other quiz shows try to manufacture in rapid-fire Q&As with the host can naturally develop. The personalities and relationships are almost as important as the rounds and questions, and it’s all done with a sense of humour – from the deliberately naff 1970s gameshow-style fondue sets and carriage clock prizes, to the enjoyable silliness behind almost every round.

To celebrate the new series airing now on weekdays at 6pm on BBC Two, here are a few fun titbits about the show.

‘Cunk on… Earth’ (2023), A documentary on Netflix: Education with Lots of… Irony
Image
Cunk on Earth is a BBC series directed by Christian Watt in which Philomena Cunk (played by Diane Morgan) asks questions which are sometimes uncomfortable, other times surrealistic and sometimes intelligent about inventions of Humanity and, how, centuries later, we have ended up the way we are today.

The screenplay has been written by Charlie Brooker among others, whom you are all familiar with (the guy from Black Mirror).

This is an interesting series that follows other batches of Cunk, which are a series that is a mix between educational series and entertainment that are ironic and atractive, above all, thanks to the presence of Diane Morgan who is just great with her British style that knows how to deliver this… irony.

If you are interested in civilization and spending a good and intelligent time in the company of this woman who has so many questions for the experts… here you have Cunk on Earth,...

Miracle Valley trailer: horror film directed by The Room’s Greg Sestero comes to Tubi
Image
I’ll always primarily think of Greg Sestero as the young Andre Toulon from Full Moon‘s 1999 release Retro Puppet Master, but for many movie fans he is best known for playing the role of Mark in director Tommy Wiseau’s “disasterpiece” The Room. After the experience of working on The Room, Sestero wrote a book about the making of the film that was called The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made, which served as the basis for the movie The Disaster Artist. Now Sestero has made his feature directorial debut with the horror film Miracle Valley, and Deadline reports that the film is going to be released through the Tubi streaming service on September 16th. With that date just three days away, check out the trailer for Miracle Valley in the embed above to see whether or not this looks like something...

E4's Tool Academy has been cancelled, says Rick Edwards
Tool Academy will not be returning.

The E4 show, presented by Rick Edwards, saw wayward boyfriends be brought up to scratch by their long-suffering girlfriends, and ran for three series.

In an interview with Heat magazine, Edwards said it was a "shame" the programme would not be coming back.

"I find myself getting asking the same things quite a lot in my day-to-day life," he explained. "These are, 'Is Tool Academy coming back?' No, it isn't, shame."

Edwards added that he also gets asked if he is friends with the cast of Made in Chelsea - for which he presents the spin-off End of Season Party - and that people will just shout 'T4' at him.

Tool Academy was described as a "relationship boot camp" and saw girlfriends secretly enrolling their boyfriends for the programme.

Rick Edwards: 'Kirstie Allsopp was my worst interview'
Rick Edwards has said that his worst interview was with Kirstie Allsopp.

The former Tool Academy host said that he was forced to apologise to the Location, Location, Location presenter following the interview.

Asked why, Edwards said: "Actually, I don't think I can say. What I can tell you is I had to text her to apologise, against my wishes.

"But, because I'm polite, I did it. But she never texted back. I didn't really mind texting her, but I think not texting back, even just to say, 'I received your text, thank you', is just rude."

Last year, Edwards reacted to a story in which Allsopp said that young women should have a baby by the age of 27 and shouldn't go to university with the reply: "Prick.

The 33-year-old TV presenter - who hosts the E4 reality show, which sees 12 unsuspecting bad boys sent to a relationship boot camp - believes the 37-year-old cage fighter would be a good addition to a celebrity version of the series but admits the standard of stars would be worse than on 'Celebrity Big Brother'. The former T4 presenter will be fronting the networks coverage of the games - which begin later this month - and while he is excited to get started, he is also scared about how it will come off. He said: ''I'm very, very excited. But I'm also pretty nervous. There is no doubt in my mind that the Paralympics will be incredible, and I just hope that our coverage will do it justice. I think it will.'' However, Rick is not scared about being compared to Clare Balding - who...

Dermot O'Leary in T4 (2001)
Rick Edwards cast in T4 comedy 'Rick and Peter'
Dermot O'Leary in T4 (2001)
Ex-T4 presenter Rick Edwards has been cast in a Comedy Labs satire about the world of TV presenting. Rick and Peter will star Edwards and Peter Mitchell (Hollyoaks, Cast Offs) as exaggerated forms of themselves. The half-hour one-off is based around Edwards's character being given a crash course in political correctness after making a gaff on T4. Written by Tom Basden (The Party), the show has been greenlit by Channel 4 comedy commissioning editor Nerys Evans. Other Comedy Labs specials airing this year include Kabadasses, (more)...

Dermot O’Leary: ‘UK X Factor comes first’
Dermot O’Leary said he counted himself out of getting the Us X Factor presenting job, when he agreed to host the UK version earler this year.

The 38 year old star lost out on the job to Welsh presenter Steve Jones but told Radio Five Live that the loss was his own fault. He said:

“I wanted to do it, but the UK one comes round first and I wasn’t going to turn down what I consider to be my job and the job I love.

“The minute I took the UK one I sort of knew I had counted myself out.”

However T4 presenter Rick Edwards isn’t so convinced and he thinks his old pal Dermot was actually treated very badly, by Simon Cowell and his cronies.

He told heat magazine:

“I think that Dermot was treated pretty badly. They could’ve just said to him, ‘We...

Jameela Jamil vows to 'do a Jedward' at T4 On The Beach

The TV presenter - who is hosting the live music event from Weston-super-Mare on July 10 alongside fellow 'T4' hosts Rick Edwards and Nick Grimshaw - explained she is planning to follow in the footsteps of Edward Grimes, who tore ligaments in his knee after performing an exuberant jump while performing at the one-day festival last year. She exclusively told Bang Showbiz: "I have resigned myself to the fact that I will be doing a Jedward and falling off the stage at some point. I'm going to...

Tool Academy: Danny Smith and Becky Maslen win – our review!
The curry was on my lap. The beer was ice cold. The telly was on. I was ready for a seminal, epoch-changing seventy-five minutes of programming.

What would I be watching: the Obama inauguration? No. The general election? Guess again. The final episode of Tool Academy? A tequila slammer for whoever got that right

In case you haven’t seen Tool Academy – which means congratulations, you’re a respectable person who is going to do something with their lives – the premise is such:

Twelve men gather in a Yorkshire manor house, joined in the naïve belief that their girlfriends have entered them into Britain’s Biggest Lad competition. This dirty dozen is an unfailing cross-section of Malia Uncovered: arrogant, boorish, preening and, above all, very stupid men. You’ve seen one of them in a club before, pounding shots of tequila and harrowing shyer people. So naturally, they don’t suspect a thing.

Big Brother 2010: Interview with George Lamb
This summer, Big Brother returns for one last, loud and lengthy hurrah, and with it, as ever, is its cheeky and irreverent younger sibling, Big Brother’s Little Brother. At the helm once again will be George Lamb (alongside new presenter and Big Brother obsessive Emma Willis). Here, George looks forward to a fantastic summer, looks back on his favourite moments over the show’s history, and reveals why real men can still cry.

So, George, what can you reveal about what’s in store for us with the last ever Big Brother this summer?

There’s nothing I can tell you yet! What I do know is that they’re going to be pulling out all the stops with the show this year. I think the intention is to really push the boundaries of what we’ve seen before, and make the most of it and create something really special.

Hollyoaks tease Rick Edwards
Rick Edwards finds it funny to refer to the 'Hollyoaks' cast by their character names. The TV presenter - who also works on the spin-off 'Hollyoaks Music Show' - is a self-confessed fan of the raunchy soap and finds it amusing winding up the cast by pretending they are their alter-egos. He told Bang Showbiz last night (13.05.10) at the Ctrl.Alt.Shift Dear Diary: Secrets and Struggles from Kenya to the UK event in Hoxton Hall, London: ''I'm doing another series of the 'Hollyoaks' music show which starts filming this weekend, so I'm travelling up to Liverpool to do that. So that'll be ..

T4 host films new 'Hollyoaks' appearance
T4 host Rick Edwards has filmed a second cameo appearance in Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks. The presenter will feature in a scene with actor John Pickard (Dom Reilly) on the teen drama in the run-up to Christmas. Edwards's brief moment on the programme will reportedly see him knocking over a pile of plastic reindeers which have been put up outside eatery Il Gnosh. His carelessness is said to frustrate Dom as he has already been ordered to take them down by Pcso Carmel McQueen (Gemma Merna). The star (more)...

London Film Festival Opening Gala Report
The Times BFI 53rd London Film Festival kicked off in fine style last night, with the world premiere of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox.Anderson has an affinity with the Lff – his The Darjeeling Limited closed the Festival in 2007 – but it’s fair to say that his presence alone wouldn’t have ensured that Leicester Square was closed off and turned into a giant, circuitous red carpet, with the film’s premiere itself spilling out of the Odeon Leicester Square to fill a second venue, the Empire (no relation). That was all down to the Clooney Factor, with Anderson’s silky-smooth star – who voices the title character in the stop-motion Roald Dahl adaptation – attracting hundreds of onlookers to the Square. Clooney gave plenty of time to the fans clustered around the red carpet, but didn’t stop to speak to the press, even – admirably – blanking the extremely annoying Rick Edwards from T4,...
