Dolly De Leon Sets Serial Killer Series Role as Philippines Producer CreaZion Studios Builds Film Slate
Image
Dolly De Leon, who rocked the Cannes Film Festival two years ago in “Triangle of Sadness,” has joined the cast of “Severino: The First Serial Killer,” an upcoming series from Philippines outfit CreaZion Studios.

While “Severino” is the highest profile project, the producer is building a larger slate of feature films.

“Severino” De Leon is a large-scale period thriller series, chronicling the tale of Catholic priest Severino Mallari, who killed 57 people during the Spanish colonization era of the country. Producers Rj Agustin and Real Florido have tapped Yam Laranas known for his horror films “The Echo” and “The Road” as series director. The cast also includes Dennis Trillo as Severino and Chai Fonacier. Production is scheduled for August.

Florido is set as director and working with producer Kristine De Leon on development of “The Fantabulous Badingger-z,” a rotoscope animation movie adapted from the comic book “Badingger-z and the Accla Assassin.

Dolly De Leon Joins Dennis Trillo In Cast Of CreaZion Studios’ Series ‘Severino: The First Serial Killer’
Image
Exclusive: Filipino producer-distributor CreaZion Studios is unveiling a slate of film and TV productions here in Cannes, including Severino: The First Serial Killer, which has Dolly De Leon joining Dennis Trillo in the cast.

Scheduled to start shooting in September, the series tells the true story of Catholic priest Severino Mallari, who predated Jack The Ripper by killing 57 people during the Spanish colonial era of the Philippines.

Trillo is playing Severino, while De Leon will play his mother, in what looks set to be one of her darkest roles yet. Severino believed his mother was bewitched and that he could cure her condition by killing people.

Yam Laranas, known for horror films The Echo and The Road, is directing the series, which has been scripted by Dodo Dayao (Cattleya Killer), Rona Co and Rody Vera (Die Beautiful).

De Leon has been working between the US and the...

‘Replacing Chef Chico’ Netflix Review: A Delightful Little Filipino Drama
Image
Chef Ella works as a sous chef at Hain, a restaurant that’s not doing so well. When her boss, Chef Chico, the head chef, as well as the guy she’s interested in, falls into a coma, the survival of the restaurant falls on her shoulders. With the help of her fellow chefs, patrons, and a mystery man named Raymond in the mix, will Ella be able to save Hain from an inevitable disaster? Replacing Chef Chico is set in the fine dining restaurant Hain, which combines Filipino dishes with a special Hain experience that is like no other. Chico and Ella are actually poles apart, especially at work, but somehow, after work, everything is forgotten. This is the first time I’ve watched anything Filipino, and my initial reaction was surprise at the predominantly English dialogue of the show.

Replacing Chef Chico begins in a strange way; it...

Interview with Avid Liongoren: We Are Animating Things Outside Our Windows!
Image
The Philippines presents a unique case in animation. Even as one of the world’s leading producers of animation, this island-state has only collected around a dozen domestically-directed features in the last century. While journal articles often accuse local talent and limited resources, outsourcing is also to blame. In the US alone, up to 90% of all American TV animation is produced in Asia; in the Philippines, the fourth largest producer of global animation in the 1980s, this translated to as much as $25 billion Usd in revenue at its peak. Production may stay at home, but ownership ships overseas.

As a result, local auteur Avid Liongoren makes a point to direct his own films. His second feature, “Hayop Ka! The Nimfa Dimaano Story” recently hit Netflix headlines as the streaming site’s first Filipino animated feature. This brightly-colored drama follows the plight of Nimfa Dimaano (Angelica Panganiban), a working-class cat who can never quite settle.

"...in this refreshing look at societal expectations, personal aspirations and a classic love triangle, 'Nimfa Dimaano' is a pretty pussycat, perfume sales kitty at a department store.

"Her boyfriend, 'Roger' a macho mongrel is a janitor. One day Nimfa meets 'Iñigo Villanueva', a bourgeoisie business dog and their chemistry ignites.

"Will Nimfa and Roger's love for cheap street food prevail or will Iñigo’s high society charms tear their relationship apart...?"

Forever And A Day Review
Their love's on a rush. Eugene (Sam Milby), a shoe designer who insists on always being on top of his game, is always on the go. Raffy (Kc Concepcion), on the other hand, is making what remains of her life count. They meet in an adventure camp. They fall in love, forcing Eugene to finally admit defeat and allowing Raffy to touch one more life before her predictable demise.   Cathy Garcia-Molina's Forever and a Day suffers from a bad case of extreme tastefulness. It is unfortunate that Garcia-Molina, who almost always supplants the mainstream imprints of her films with subtle inventiveness and distinctive charm, seems powerless to the dullness of the film's unfortunate script. It is a dullness that is only worsened by...

Babe, I Love You Review
With its lay of claim on the corniest of the many corny verses in the 1979 Styx hit Babe to christen its latest film, Star Cinema kills any existing expectation for anything else than unabashed mushiness from this film. Babe, I Love You, helmed by T.V. soap director Mae Czarina Cruz, tells the story of Nico Veneracion (Sam Milby), an architecture professor from an affluent family who unwittingly at first, but after a series of perspective-changing experiences, freely falls for Sasa Sanchez (Anne Curtis), a boisterous yet charming promo-girl. This derivative rich boy-poor girl romance gets the job of providing slight and momentary pleasures done without even trying, especially since the film has in its disposal the ingenious pairing of two impossibly good-looking real life ex-lovers who are currently two of the most bankable entertainers in the country.

It is therefore inevitable that much of the film is spent in...
