Shaun Drew is an LA-based music composer, producer and arranger of distinction. His multi-colored and modern sound palette is marked with sophistication and maturity, and by an ability to harmoniously balance technical prowess with a visceral, emotive, often spiritual quality. Shaun's love for many genres of music has made him particularly versatile and adept at composing for a wide range of projects--from comedy to superhero animation, documentary, drama and horror/thriller feature films.
Shaun is known for his work composing for film and TV projects, and for his collaborations with various LA-area artists and bands as an arranger, producer and engineer. His works have been utilized in national ad campaigns, hit series and major motion picture trailers. A prolific writer for strings, Shaun often infuses his signature style with the orchestral sound by employing guitars, drums, keyboards, bass, ambient textures, and percussion, Shaun's primary instrument. Catchy, often haunting melodies and intricate rhythmic phrasings are among the hallmarks of his compositional style.
From 2015 to 2019, Shaun served as the composer for DC Super Hero Girls, the original animated franchise, which developed into a billion-dollar brand for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Entertainment. Shaun composed and produced nearly 600 minutes of original music for the brand's TV special, Superhero High, plus multiple video releases, a TV and Internet series and on-demand content. In their first few seasons, the YouTube shorts accumulated over 150 million views. Shaun also composed the music for the 75th anniversary DC Comics documentary, Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics. He created over 80 minutes of orchestral score in less than three weeks for the project. Additionally, he provided music for the marketing campaign for one of Disney/Pixar's high-grossing animated films, Brave. Shaun also contributed the main musical themes for Gloves of Stone (Maya Entertainment), a bilingual boxing drama starring Martin Sheen and Michael Madsen, which was partially shot in Mexico City. His first solo recording effort, an ambient album called The Great Dissolve, was met with positive critical reviews, garnering comparisons to pioneering electronic composers Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos. The record was honored as a finalist by the Independent Music Awards, and a Billboard staff writer summarized the project succinctly as "a powerful cascade of melody".
Shaun scored The Vault, a bank heist and horror genre mash-up film starring James Franco, Taryn Manning and Francesca Eastwood. A US and UK theatrical release of the film occurred in September of 2017.
Early on in his career, Shaun worked for indie record label, Vitamin Records, arranging and producing string quartet tribute albums based on the hit songs of Jeff Buckley, Peter Gabriel, Foo Fighters and Paul McCartney. Shaun collaborated on those numerous successful releases with engineer Richard Bosworth (The Knack, Barbara Streisand, Steve Perry, USA for Africa). Before turning his focus towards film scores and fully producing more of his own works as a composer, Shaun also worked as a producer, arranger and recording engineer with LA-area rock and pop artists such as The Mornings, Michael Paul, John King, Rojeh Band, Katrina Parker, (semi-finalist of The Voice Season 2) and others. Shaun also collaborated on creating two unique classical crossover records with tenor AJ Teshin--The Kurt Weill Project, and with soprano Katherine Liner--Lullabies in Motion, which featured fresh arrangements and ethereal vocal stylings paired with treasured classical lullabies, both obscure and well-known. Lullabies in Motion earned 2 HMMA (Hollywood Music in Media Awards) category nominations for Best Americana/Folk/Acoustic song ("Slumber My Darling" by Stephen Foster) and Best Independent Music Video ("Beau Soir" by Claude Debussy), for which Shaun was the director and co-producer alongside the artist. A big believer in the power of music as a storytelling device and influencer of cultural change, Shaun often creates striking videos for his works. For his latest release, Singularity, Shaun collaborated with two string orchestras (Northern Film Orchestra, Manchester, and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, Prague).
