The Young Adults

The Young Adults were a rock band from Providence, Rhode Island. The group was formed in the early 70s. The founding members were: Bruce McCrae (vocals/saxophone), David Hansen (drums/vocals), Jeff Shore (piano), and Ed Vallee (guitar). The Young Adults performed regularly at the nightclub Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island and amassed a sizable fan following in the immediate area. Their songs tended to be very quirky and humorous, as such choice goofy titles as "A Power Tool is Not a Toy," "Christmas in Japan in July," and "Do the Heimlich" all clearly confirm. The group was considered by Lorne Michaels to be the possible house band on "Saturday Night Live," but ultimately didn't get the gig. They released the single "Complex World/Beer" in 1979 on the Genius Records label. The Young Adults disbanded later on that same year. Hansen moved to New York City and formed the no wave outfit Cool It Reba in 1981. In July, 1987 the group got back together to play a few shows for a benefit concert in order to stop Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel from going out of business. These shows were filmed by movie director Jim Wolpaw and included in the offbeat cult rock'n'roll comedy blast "Complex World." The Young Adults released their sole full-length album "Helping Others" in 1988 before splitting up a second and final time. David Hansen now sings for the country and western swing band the Western Caravan while Ed Vallee sings and plays guitar for the R&B group Steve Smith and the Nakeds.
