DC Loses August 2025: All of Marvel Comics Top 10 June Best-Sellers Are Returning This Month
Image
While James Gunn’s Dcu hit it big with Superman, DC Comics seems to have lost August 2025 to Marvel, with respect to returning comics. While the Absolute series has been doing great, seven ongoing issues from Marvel made the top 10 best seller list in June, all of which are returning in August.

From popular comics like The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America (both of their next issues come out on August 6) to the recent Imperial series, Marvel dominated June with seven entries in the top 10 list. All of those storylines are returning for their next issue, including a one-off Imperial War: Black Panther issue. While DC’s Absolute Batman took the top spot, the rest of the list was filled with Marvel entries.

It Took 41 Years, But Marvel Is Settling the Spider-Man vs Venom Debate
Image
Spoilers for Spider-Verse vs Venomverse #1!

Marvel has officially kicked off their latest Spider-Man and Venom-related event in this summer’s Spider-Verse vs Venomverse series — an epic comic book story that promises exciting action, never-before-seen characters, and a set of multiversal stakes that threaten everyone on both sides of the conflict. As the first issue of this series shows, Spider-Man and Venom have their work cut out for them, settling the debate of which character is worthy of surviving this harrowing ordeal.

A multiverse-spanning Spider-Man story that began over ten years ago with 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man #9, this inaugural Spider-Verse tale eventually led to multiple comic sequels such as Spider-Geddon and End of the Spider-Verse, with Venom also receiving a similar event in his 2017 Venomverse limited series.

Released as the first chapter in a planned five-part story, Spider-Verse vs Venomverse #1 has been hyped as the most devastating — and possibly...

Marvel's Epic Spider-Man vs. Venom War Begins By Calling Out The Biggest Lie in Their Marvel History
Image
Warning: contains potential spoilers for Spider-Verse Vs VenomVerse #1

Marvel’s epic Spider-Man versus Venom war begins by calling out the biggest lie in the character’s history. Venom rocketed into the American comics scene in the late 1980s, rocking Spider-Man’s world to its core. Since then, Venom has drifted into “anti-hero” territory, as well as becoming a cosmic being. Now, in a preview for Spider-Verse Vs Venomverse #1, the similarities between the two characters become even more apparent.

Spider-Verse Vs Venomverse #1 is written by Kyle Higgins and drawn by Luciano Vecchio. The preview recounts the arcs of both Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, beginning with their lives before gaining powers and afterward. Using shared narration boxes, the preview highlights what Peter and Eddie have in common, stressing their triumphs and their losses. As the preview ends, both heroes vow to protect their territory and friends from the other,...

Marvel Comics Reveals New Costume For Japanese Spider-Man In Spider-verse Vs. Venomverse Series
Image
Marvel Comics has revealed a new costume for Japan's very own Spider-Man, Takuya Yamashiro. Designed by superstar artist Luciano Vecchio, the costume will debut in July's Spider-Verse vs. VenomVerse #3.

In that issue, this beloved Spidey Variant will join the Multiversal war between Spiders and Symbiotes.

To bring you up to speed, the Japanese Spider-Man, known as Supaidāman, debuted in 1978 as part of a tokusatsu TV series produced by Toei Company, distinct from Marvel’s Peter Parker. Here, Takuya Yamashiro, a motorbike racer, gains spider-powers after encountering a dying alien warrior, Garia, from Planet Spider.

Tasked with protecting Earth, Takuya battles the Iron Cross Army, led by Professor Monster, who unleashes giant robots and minions. Unlike the web-slinging hero of the comics, this Spider-Man dons a suit via a bracelet, commands a giant robot called Leopardon, and drives the Spider-Machine Gp-7 car. The series lasted for 41 episodes and has become something of a cult favourite.

6 Image Comics Superheroes Who Should Get A TV Show After Invincible
Image
Invincible has hit it out of the park for Amazon Prime, and it proves that a lot of other superheroes and comic book universes from Image Comics should become animated TV shows too. Following the adventures of Mark Grayson, son of Omni-Man, Prime Video's Invincible explores how his father's legacy, as well as the responsibilities of being a hero, are not entirely what Mark expected in way the honors the original comic book.

Invincible has a 999% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Invincible Season 3's release date set for February 2025. Given the success of Invincible, it would be amazing to see other comic series adapted as animated shows. Specifically, seeing more Image Comics brought to the small screen would be a delight.

For many Image Comics titles, they are creator-owned characters, and these comics go well beyond just the superhero genre. This means that Amazon adapting Invincible does not necessarily...

"The Singularity" tells the story of Blue Eyes, who is stuck in a cycle of living, loving, losing, then dying, before being reborn and it all starting again.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Debuts an Evil Ranger That '90s Fans Never Knew About
Image
The Boom! Studios Power Rangers comic franchise features a secret evil Green Ranger that television fans may not know about. Tommy Oliver's introduction into the original Mighty Morphin series as Rita Repulsa's mind-controlled minion was the first time that the evil Ranger trope was incorporated into the franchise. Since then, there have been several examples of the trope on TV - and in the comics.

In particular, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 by Kyle Higgins and Daniele Di Nicuolo features the debut of an evil Green Ranger that's exclusive to the comics and is a member of the Psycho Rangers. Long-time viewers will recall that the Psycho Rangers were the antagonists of Power Rangers in Space, the show's sixth season. The team mirrored the colors of the Space Rangers, but neither team featured a Green Ranger.

The comics, though, expand on their lore by showcasing Psycho Green's origins, revealing how...

Power Rangers' Secret 1969 Team Revealed the Horrifying Fate of the Rangers Before the 90s TV Originals
Image
The first Power Rangers team did not originate in 1993, despite being the year that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers first hit the airwaves. Naturally, most audiences would assume they were canonically Zordons first Rangers team. However, thanks to Boom! Studios effort to redefine the lore of the Power Rangers franchise, the comics offer an additional history that paints the show in a new light.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 by Kyle Higgins and Daniele Di Nicuolo reveals that Zordon found his first crop of Rangers not in 1993, but in 1969. Zordon never wouldve mentioned it because their first mission ended so disastrously that it puts a stain on his legacy, as revealed by Grace Sterling, who has her own big moment in issue #19 by Higgins and Hendry Prasetya.

The knowledge that Zordon led Rangers who pre-date even the original "teenagers with attitude" adds a new element to the canon. It recontextualizes exactly why...

Power Rangers' Tommy Oliver Killed the 1 Person No '90s Fan Would Ever Believe
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #15When Tommy Oliver was finally freed from Rita Repulsas mind control, he chose to atone for his sins and join the Power Rangers. However, in an alternate world, a different version of the Green Ranger chose to stay alongside his Queen, taking a much darker path. In his path toward conquest, he crossed one critical line that fans watching the original show in the 90s would be appalled by.

Boom! Studios Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic book series is a massive eight-year-long saga that expands on and transforms the stories of the original Power Rangers lineup. However, while the prime continuity of the Angel Grove teens remained mostly the same, in an alternate timeline, Tommy Olivers transformation to Lord Drakkon spelled despair for both timelines.

Spearheading the beginning of his worlds downfall, Drakkon coldly slayed the franchises most beloved sage, Zordon. With...

The Original Pink Ranger's Unbeatable Weapon Upgrade Will Blow the Mind of Every 90s Kid
Image
Kimberly Ann Hart of the Power Rangers got the most mind-blowing weapon upgrade in the franchise's comic book extended universe. The Pink Ranger's signature choice of weapon was always the Power Bow, but even that isn't the most powerful weapon Kimberly has wielded. Even the reinvented bow weapon which she wields when she becomes the Ranger Slayer as an adult pales in comparison to another upgrade.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #30 written by Kyle Higgins, with art by Daniele Di Nicuolo featured the exhilarating moment when the original Pink Ranger received her most powerful upgrade in the character's history, in the form of the Green Ranger's Dragon Shield and Dagger.

The comics have gone to great lengths to reinvent the Pink Ranger character, but no attempt feels as pronounced in highlighting her competence and evolution as a hero as this arc, in which she earned the Dragon Dagger.

Power Rangers: Lord Drakkon Name Explained - Origin for the Codename of the Evil Tommy Oliver
Image
Not every fan of Power Rangers may be aware of the origins of Lord Drakkon's name. When Drakkon makes his on-panel debut, it was a mystery who could be under the helmet until two issues later, when Drakkon was revealed as Tommy Oliver. After that, Drakkon became the Boom! Studios Power Ranger series' best villain, but the series only briefly delved into why Tommy chose the Drakkon codename.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Annual 2017, the story "Search Party" written by Kyle Higgins, with art by Goi Montes offers readers some additional context for the Drakkon version of Tommy's origin story, including elucidating the background of his villainous moniker.

"That Ain't Really the Avengers": 20 Years Later, Marvel Names the 1 Hero Who Ruined the Avengers
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Ultraman X Avengers #2! The Avengers started off as an exclusive team of heroes, but it quickly became much more of a revolving door for any superhero to claim an Avengers title whenever the world needed saving. While, overall, thats a good thing, and allows for a variety of heroes to become Avengers (if even just for a storyline or two), it apparently ruined the integrity of the team, especially after one hero in particular joined its ranks.

Who are The Coinless? Power Rangers' Alternate Universe Apocalyptic Team, Explained
Image
One major "What If?" moment created a whole new Power Rangers universe within the canon. Before the multiverse became all the rage across pop culture, the Power Rangers franchise explored the concept in the Boom! Studios comic series. The jumping off point for that exploration came from a a classic "What If?" scenario: What if Tommy Oliver stayed evil?

The answer to that question creates the World of the Coinless, which readers first catch a glimpse of in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #9 by Kyle Higgins, Hendry Prasetya, Matt Herms, and Ed Dukeshire. After destroying the epic Black Dragon Zord, the explosion sends Billy Cranston and Tommy Oliver to an alternate dimension, led by its dictator and Black Dragon's creator, Lord Drakkon - otherwise known as an evil Tommy from an alternate future timeline.

Power Rangers: Trini Kwan's Black Dragon Armor Is the Original Yellow Ranger's Coolest Upgrade of All Time
Image
The best upgrade that Trini Kwan of the Power Rangers received happened in the comics. Power Rangers are known to have their power upgrades on television, especially Red Rangers with their Battilizers. However, for non-Red Rangers especially, the best Ranger upgrades happen in the comics.

The best upgrade for the original Yellow Ranger arrives in the form of Black Dragon armor, debuting in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #16 by Kyle Higgins and Hendry Prasetya. The comics have gifted Trini Kwan with a few major upgrades - including becoming a Red Ranger - but the Black Dragon armor may arguably be the coolest one she ever had.

Power Rangers' Epic Black Dragon Zord Broke The Original Series' Single Biggest Rule
Image
One of the biggest lore changes in Power Rangers franchise history happens in the comics. The Boom! Studios comics constantly found new ways to redefine classic Power Rangers lore, as well as reinvent classic characters from the franchise. As an extension of the show, it presented the franchise the opportunity to recontextualize staples of the series in fresh ways.

Among the classic ideas reinvented for the modern Power Rangers franchise comes in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4 by Kyle Higgins, Hendry Prasetya, Matt Herms, and Ed Dukeshire, which puts a twist on Zords vs. Monsters. There was a time when it was a full-blown, in-universe rule uttered by Zordon for Rangers to not bring out their Zords until a monster grows. The introduction of the Black Dragon puts a twist on that dynamic in a way that has major implications on the difference between this world's heroes and villains.

Power Rangers: Rita Repulsa's Most Dastardly Quotes That Solidify Her as the Empress of Evil
Image
Rita Repulsa's cunning plans and deceptive nature make her the feared Empress of Evil in Power Rangers lore. Through her twisted lines and dark intentions, Rita Repulsa establishes herself as a master manipulator in the comics. Rita's unwavering confidence and drive for power, even after setbacks, showcase her resilience and determination as a villain.

No villain has been more prevalent in Power Rangers lore than Rita Repulsa. It's been three decades since the villain first emerged from her moon prison and to this day, she finds a way to terrorize Angel Grove whenever possible.

Whether she returns as a robot or whether she's even more vile than usual, there's no denying why she's the Empress of Evil. This is particularly the case in the Boom! Studios comic revival of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, although she's currently in the midst of a potential rebranding as the Mystic Mother. Before her pursuit of redemption,...

Christopher Reeve Faced Zack Snyder's Biggest Superman Problem 30 Years Before Man Of Steel
Image
Comic author Kyle Higgins reflects on Superman IV and how Christopher Reeve wanted to explore more real-world themes. Both Reeve and Zack Snyder's takes on Superman were criticized for tackling real-world issues, blurring the line between protector and potential tyrant. Reeve's Superman IV faced backlash for focusing on nuclear disarmament, challenging the escapist appeal of the character against societal issues.

Superman actor Christopher Reeve once faced the same problem Zack Snyder did when making 2013s Man of Steel. Considered by many to be the best live-action portrayal of DCs beloved superhero, Reeve first assumed Supermans iconic tights and cape for 1978s Superman: The Movie. He would reprise the role three more times, culminating in 1987s widely panned Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Since then, actors Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill would each go on to follow in Reeves footsteps in 2006s Superman Returns and Snyders 2013 Dceu debut, Man of Steel.

How Power Rangers Turned Scorpina into an Iconic Villain (After the Show Wasted Her)
Image
Scorpina's comic renaissance showcases her as a powerful and overlooked villain from the Power Rangers universe. The comics give Scorpina a chance to shine as a formidable fighter and a key player in different storylines. By embracing Scorpina's redemption arc, the comics turn her into a hero and an official Power Ranger named the Witch.

Thanks to the Power Rangers comic books, Scorpina has finally become the iconic villain that she should have always been on the original show. Scorpina first debuted during the iconic five-parter "Green with Evil" and thus, almost immediately, was immortalized into Ranger lore forever. Despite only appearing in a handful of episodes, Scorpina developed a core fanbase and is fondly remembered to this day. However, that's mostly in spite of how the show handled her, not because of it.

Today, Scorpina is not only viewed as one of Power Rangers' most underrated villains, but also a wasted opportunity,...

Power Rangers Finally Explains Why Scorpina Vanished from the TV Show
Image
Scorpina's disappearance is finally explained in Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon. Scorpina is betrayed by Rita Repulsa and banished to the Talos Dimension, where she avoids the Z-Wave and becomes the last Power Rangers villain in canon. Scorpina's story showcases her growth from Rita's henchwoman to a power-hungry villain in her own right.

A canonical explanation is finally given for the disappearance of the memorable Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villain, Scorpina. Introduced in the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Scorpina is, hands down, Rita Repulsa's most skilled henchwoman. Her appearances are few and far between at 25 episodes, but she leaves an impression as an underrated villain. Yet, she disappears suddenly without explanation.

Her last regular television appearance is in the second season episode "Goldar's Vice-Versa." After that, Scorpina's whereabouts are never disclosed until the 2018 comic Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon by Kyle Higgins, Giuseppe Cafaro, Marcelo Costa,...

How Nightwing Figured Out Batman's Secret Identity (Before He Was Robin)
Image
Dick Grayson, the first Robin and long-tentured DC hero Nightwing, deduced that Bruce Wayne is Batman simply by analyzing their facial expressions and mannerisms. Nightwing's deductive abilities were evident even before his superhero career, and were showcased in 2012's Nightwing #0. Nightwing's natural detective skills may even surpass Batman's, as he demonstrated these abilities as an untrained child.

Before he even put on a cape and cowl, the first Robin – now known as Nightwing – proved his exceptional detective skills by almost immediately putting together than Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same, a fact that evaded even Gotham's most skilled investigators. As this proved, Dick Grayson's deduction skills were always top-notch, even before his long, illustrious superhero career.

Nightwing #0 –by Tom DeFalco, Kyle Higgins, Eddy Barrows, and Eber Ferreira – fully displayed Dick's deductive abilities. The issue serves as a hidden origin story of Dick Grayson and his entry into Wayne Manor.

Batman's Best Weakness Still Hasn't Appeared on Film
Image
Batman has consistently faced some of the most intelligent and dangerous criminals in comics, but the fact he's always looking to the next biggest threat has given him a weakness that viewers still haven't seen in a movie yet.

The villains Batman goes up against are generally some of the smartest and most dangerous non-powered individuals in comic books. Characters like the Riddler, Bane, Joker, Scarecro, and Ra's al Ghul are huge threats, sometimes worldwide-level threats, and none of them have superpowers. Because of this, Batman is always looking for the next big threat; if something starts happening, Bruce always assumes it's part of a bigger threat. And he's not necessarily wrong to think this way, considering Batman has faced multiversal threats like the Court of Owls. But always looking for the next big threat or grand plan has given Batman a unique blind spot that once almost got both...
