From Grief to Leadership: Building a Movement in Mike Brown’s Memory (Guest Column)

I still have chunks of the bloodstained road from where my son was murdered. I have lumps of asphalt and crumples of the dirt that was under it. The city gave it to me in buckets when they decided to put a new blacktop over just that one section of Canfield Drive. It’s hard to revisit that street, which is cracked and filled with potholes, except for that one spot. Looking at that rectangle reminds me that my son lay there for four and a half hours. I don’t need to be reminded of how my child was chased, shot down and left lying in the middle of the road like trash in a landfill. It was hot that day. The sun was baking at over 90 degrees and scorching his bullet-riddled body that was still uncovered for his closest relatives to witness and the world to see. I’ll never forget it.

Outrage Erupts Over Kansas GOP Fundraiser Where Attendees Physically Assaulted An Effigy Of Joe Biden
Image
Officials from the Kansas Republican Party have faced widespread criticism and calls for resignations after a fundraising event titled “Grand Ol’ Party,” took place in Overland Park, Kansas, and featured an effigy of President Joe Biden that attendees were encouraged to physically assault.

Video footage from the event shows individuals punch, kick and swing a bat at a Biden mannequin dressed in a “Let’s Go Brandon” shirt. The incident sparked a significant response on social media and ignited a broader conversation about the boundaries of political discourse and the importance of respectful engagement, regardless of ideological differences.

Although the video, originally uploaded to the video platform Rumble, was later deleted, Democratic commentator and attorney Kaivan Shroff uploaded a video of the event to X. Kansas GOP officials swiftly condemned the attacks on the effigy.

In response to the backlash, Maria Holiday, chair of the Johnson County Republican Party, jumped...

The Steamy Sexual Politics of ‘Wild Things’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Robert Wise
Gator Chic.

After kicking off the month of March with a look at some classic queer cinema in Robert Wise’s The Haunting, we unlocked the Patreon vault and re-released our super-sized episode on Scream (2022). Now, in honor of spring break, we’re heading back into the world of erotic thrillers with a look at John McNaughton‘s 1998 classic Wild Things.

Wild Things sees teen debutante Kelly (Denise Richards) fail to attract the attention of her hunky guidance counselor, Sam (Matt Dillon). She then accuses him of rape, igniting a scandal that results in his arrest. Sam appeals to Ken (Bill Murray), a hack personal-injury lawyer who has never handled a case that couldn’t be helped by a prop neck brace. But when a second victim, Suzie (Neve Campbell), comes forward, local detective Ray Duquette (Kevin Bacon) discovers that the unfolding case is far from what it seems.

The Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals was postponed after Bills player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field, was given CPR and then taken away by ambulance.

The 24-year-old safety was hospitalized in critical condition, with the NFL saying in a statement, “Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Later on Monday, the Buffalo Bills tweeted that Hamlin had “suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit.” The Bills post read: “His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the Uc Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”

A rep for the family shared on Tuesday morning that Hamlin was fighting. “He’s a fighter,” said Jordon Rooney, speaking from the hospital to ABC News’ Good Morning America.
