Microbudget Horror ‘Skinamarink’ Creeps Onto 600+ Screens – Specialty Preview
Image
Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.

“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.

In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

Review: The Devil Conspiracy, Mind Melting, Delirious Genre Remix
Image
The first sign that something’s not quite right in director Nathan Frankowski and writer Ed Alan’s collaboration, The Devil Conspiracy, appears in the awkward title itself: an apostrophe and “s” appear to be missing. The “the” also appears to be superfluous. Either way, something feels off even before the title appears on the screen to announce a biblically themed sci-fi/supernatural action-thriller remix. For all its warts and imperfections, The Devil Conspiracy deserves credit for its ambitious scope, energetic direction, and go-for-broke mishmash of ideas, some shockingly intriguing, others shockingly awful, and the remainder somewhere in between. The Devil Conspiracy opens with a seemingly familiar retelling of the War in Heaven, the fall of Lucifer by the sword of...

The Devil Conspiracy Review: Perhaps The Best Movie Ever Made About Biotech Devil Worshippers Trying To Clone Jesus
Image
Stop me if you've heard this one. A biotech company that also happens to be a devil-worshipping cult has been cloning famous historical figures and auctioning them off to wealthy bidders. The clones are still kids and in some cases babies, which means for a huge amount of money, someone can get their very own toddler Stravinsky or baby Michelangelo. Kind of like "Clone High," but evil.

But here's the thing: cloning these historical geniuses isn't the cult's endgame. They plan on stealing the Shroud of Turin and using the blood stains on the supposedly holy artifact to clone Jesus Christ himself. But wait, there's more. Not only does the cult want to clone Jesus — they want to use the clone baby as the host for Lucifer himself. Yes, Satan is real, and so are angels, and the battle between Heaven and Hell is about to come to Earth!

That's...

The Devil Conspiracy Review
Image
Plot: A cult steals the Shroud of Turin for wicked purposes.

Review: The Devil Conspiracy almost feels like someone saw Rosemary’s Baby and said “I can make that considerably more European.” The idea of a cult coming together to ensure the birth of the anti-christ isn’t exactly a groundbreaking concept. But they flip that on its head in an interesting way and I can’t say enough good things about how they pull it off. The film constantly knows its place, never trying to do too much. This is a cheese-fest with a fresh coat of paint. And that’s not really a bad thing.

The film is brimming with religion but even as a non-religious man, I never felt overwhelmed by it. They take every aspect in such a “Hollywood” way that even the most devout Atheist should be able to watch with ease. In fact, it actually...

Box office preview: MLK Jr. weekend offers new movies from Tom Hanks and Gerard Butler, plus a ‘House Party’ remake
Image
After a great start to the New Year, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend offers another four-day weekend, which has often been the best week in the month of January to have a substantial hit. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Three years ago, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for “Bad Boys for Life,” a movie that opened with 73 million over the four-day weekend. Two months later, Covid hit and movie theaters shut down, allowing that buddy comedy to become the biggest hit of 2020 with just 204.5 million in North America.

Even before that, this holiday weekend has seen sizable hits, including Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” in 2015 and the original “Ride Along,” starring Ice Cube and Kevin Hart, a year earlier.

Going into the weekend, most may just have to accept that “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “M3GAN” will likely remain the #1 and 2 movies,...

Kat Dennings Is On The Road To Recovery In To Write Love On Her Arms Trailer
To Write Love On Her Arms, the upcoming drama from director Nathan Frankowski, takes its inspiration from the real not-for-profit titular organization. Their mission statement since inception has been to assist those struggling with addiction, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and depression. In this mix of fantasy and reality, the charity’s formative years are explored as youngster Renee grapples with the dark side of life.

Leading the pack as the troubled teen is Kat Dennings, whose big screen exploits have taken a backseat to her more chipper TV presence. For this sombre tale, Dennings leaves behind the canned laughter antics of 2 Broke Girls to venture down a long, difficult path to a happier life. It’s during her journey that she is prompted to start the charity, and this is where the facts and the fiction merge a little.

As enticing as the story may sound – particularly after reading the official...

Kat Dennings Learns 'To Write Love on Her Arms' in Drama Trailer
After breakthrough and impressive roles in movies like The 40-Year Old Virgin and Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, it's a shame that Kat Dennings isn't doing more on the big screen. Of course, she's quite busy with the CBS comedy series "2 Broke Girls," but she's way better than that sitcom drivel. But in between seasons of that show, it seems she found time to shoot the low profile drama To Write Love on Her Arms. It looks like there's some interesting fantasy elements here to help visualize depression and addiction, but it doesn't look all that provocative. Still, maybe it'll be worth watching next spring. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Nathan Frankowski's To Write Love on Her Arms from Sony Pictures: To Write Love on Her Arms is directed by Nathan Frankowski (No Saints for Sinners) and written by first-time feature writer Kate King Lynch. Michael Moore at an event for The 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008)
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed
Michael Moore at an event for The 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008)
Managing to make the films of Michael Moore and Morgan Spurlock look like dry, scholarly treatises by comparison, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed more than lives up to its subtitle.

Co-written by and starring Ben Stein -- whose credentials range from serving as a speechwriter for Richard Nixon to game show host to acting credits including the beleaguered teacher in Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- this documentary purporting to examine the issue of freedom of expression in the debate between the competing arguments of "intelligent design" and Darwinism squanders the potential fascination of its topic with its simplistic, heavy-handed approach.

The film's main thesis is that scientists and educators are being persecuted, in some cases fired from their positions, because they had the effrontery to challenge their institutions' scientific orientation toward the theory of evolution.

The deep-voiced, stone-faced Stein thus conducts a series of solicitous interviews with a number of such figures, in between his own musings about the beginnings of life. The Berlin Wall is used as a central visual metaphor for the suppression of such ideas, with director Nathan Frankowski employing archival footage of both its construction and eventual tearing down at numerous points.

Indeed, copious use is made of vintage film clips, often to truly goofy effect. From the image of a guillotine in conjunction with a professor's being fired to clips of Khrushchev pounding his shoe at the United Nations to scenes from such films as Planet of the Apes and The Wizard of Oz, the proceedings start to most closely resemble HBO's late sitcom Dream On.

Music is also used for ironic if predictable effect, with snippets heard from such songs as Personal Jesus, Spirit in the Sky and Imagine.

Many of the central ideas expressed are truly offensive, such as the attempt to link Darwinism and Nazism, complete with footage of a grim-faced (not that he ever looks any different) Stein touring a Nazi concentration camp. At another point, the morose host ventures to the lair of the enemy himself, Darwin's home, and engages in a lengthy staring contest with a life-sized sculpture of the scientist.

Not surprisingly, there is a climactic showdown between Stein and the leading atheist of the day, Richard Dawkins (author of The God Delusion), that is as unenlightening as everything that has preceded it.
