“But can it run…”: 17 Years Before Marvel Rivals Devoured Your Ram, One Game Was Used as The Benchmark to Test Your PC’s Super Saiyan Levels
Image
Your gaming rig is sweating bullets trying to run Marvel Rivals. The Ram usage meter creeps toward 100%, your fans sound like they’re preparing for liftoff, and suddenly—crash. Back to desktop you go.

This memory-hungry behavior from NetEase’s superhero shooter might feel like a new kind of torture, but veterans of the PC gaming wars are actually experiencing a perfect case of déjà vu.

The frame drops are real. | Image Credit: NetEase Games

Long before your computer begged for mercy trying to render Doctor Strange’s portals, another game had already perfected the art of bringing top-tier hardware to its knees.

Before ray tracing was cool, there was Crytek’s island paradise

Back in 2007, German developer Crytek unleashed something that would forever change how we measure gaming hardware: Crysis. This wasn’t just another first-person shooter—it was a technological statement that practically screamed “we’re from the future” at bewildered gamers worldwide.

“This muscle suit came up”: Crytek Boss Was Invited to Nanotech Conference After Crysis Nanosuit Stunned Everyone With Realism
Image
In 2007, the legendary Crysis was released and it had game-changing graphics and gameplay for its time. But almost two decades later Crytek’s creation is mostly remembered due to the “Can it run Crysis?” meme. At the time, it was a very valid question because it was so hard to believe that some even believed it was real.

It’s one of the most popular games of all time. | Image Credit: Crytek

The Nanosuit is now iconic for its innovative mix of futuristic technology with creative gameplay. But the suit’s realism had unintended consequences. The studio’s founder and then-ceo Cevat Yerli revealed in a recent interview that the suit was so convincing, it led to an invitation to speak at a nanotechnology conference.

Crytek cooked so hard with the Nanosuit that people thought it was real It just tooks too good. | Image Credit: Crytek

Crytek Joins The Virtual Reality Club; The Climb Announced For Oculus Rift
Crysis and Ryse: Son Of Rome developer Crytek have announced their latest game, but it’s probably not what you were expecting like, at all. The Climb – a virtual reality game that Crytek says will give players “the rush and thrill of free solo rock climbing” is headed exclusively to Oculus Rift, so if you’re not a fan of Vr but love Crytek games, you’re out of luck, unfortunately.

Judging from the good-looking trailer above, The Climb will do just that when it releases – it’s looking fantastic, even in these early stages. Be warned though, if you’re afraid of heights, this is most definitely not the game for you.

Speaking of what the studio aims to give players with The Climb’s gameplay, Crytek said:

The Climb uses elements of the real life sport in gameplay to give players the sensation of rock climbing. For example,...

Awards Season Continues With Visual Effects, Sound Mixing And Makeup Nominations
Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.

First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Crytek USA Going After Darksiders IP In Final Thq Auction
Shortly after Thq’s initial bankruptcy auction ended with an astonishing zero bids for the Darksiders brand, Crytek chief executive officer Cevat Yerli seized the opportunity and opened up Crytek USA Corp. in Vigil Games’ (the developer behind the two game series) home city of Austin, Texas. Former Vigil lead David Adams was brought in to run the division as CEO, and the studio was quickly filled with multiple ex-Vigil employees.

With Crytek USA now up and running, David Adams has expressed his intent to go after the Darksiders IP to bring it “home” to the people who created it. Speaking out on his Twitter account yesterday, Adams stated:

“Going to bid on Darksiders IP. Put 7 years of heart and soul into that franchise, and I think it belongs at home with its creators.”

Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli later confirmed the Tweet with Destructiod, saying “When the Darksiders IP goes up for auction,...

Crysis 3 Was Running On The Wii U But Nobody Wanted To Publish It
For most of last year Crysis 3 looked as if it might come to Nintendo’s Wii U console. Crytek executives would often hint at the possibility — one even went so far as to say that they were “working with Nintendo” on something — but they would never outright confirm that a version was in development. Last January Crytek’s CEO, Cevat Yerli, put an end to the speculation by stating that there were “discussions” between EA, Nintendo and Crytek to get Crysis 3 on the Wii U but there was “not enough business drive in it“.

At the time, Yerli’s statement made it sound as if the Wii U version was killed before the developer had started any work on it. The CEO has since expanded on his statements, revealing that Crysis 3 was up and running on Nintendo’s console but there was not enough “business support” to publish it.

“We...

Crytek Will Go Completely Free-to-Play Within 5 Years
Ready for big-budget games to go free-to-play? Well, it seems we're getting closer and closer every day. In fact, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli recently revealed that he expects the company to go entirely free-to-play within 5 years.

Speaking with GamesBeat, Yerli explained that the decision to embrace the f2p model isn't a new one, but something the team has planned on doing for quite some time.

"We decided five or six years ago that we want to marry the quality of triple-a games with the business model of free-to-play," Yerli told GamesBeat. "And out of that position, Gface and Warface were born. And at that time, we decided some other games, in some of our other studios, would head in this direction. But we kept pushing the quality bar higher on our console business, which is the main dominating business for the Western world, but we are observing, plainly — and...

Darksiders' Developer Vigil Becomes Crytek USA
Vigil went bankrupt with Thq, but the staff is still one studio!

Thq had some quality assets going into auction before finally going bankrupt entirely. A majority of those assets were sold and are currently in new homes, but one big suprise was Vigil and Darksiders. No one bid on them for some reason, and the fans didn't want to see them go. So in stepped Crytek.

Vigil and Darksiders are gone. They went bankrupt officially with Thq several days ago. However the staff of Vigil had a meeting with Crytek, and during this single meeting they opened a brand new studio. Crytek USA, located in Austin Texas where Vigil employees are based.

According to reports Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli flew from Germany to Texas to meet with Vigils David Adams. Crytek noted they were interested in bidding on Vigil, and spoke with them during the auctions and bankruptcy, but...

Vigil Games Get Lifeline From Crytek USA Corp
Crytek has announced its plans to open a new studio which will include staff from recently shut down Vigil Games.

Crytek's newest outfit will be situated in Austin, Texas and will be championed by Vigil co-founder David Adams. Over 30 ex-Vigil employees will operate out of Crytek USA Corp.

As reported by McV, Mr Adams expressed his excitement stating: "I'm thrilled to be a part of the newest Crytek studio, which will boast some of the brightest development talent in the industry.

"The studio's launch represents Crytek's commitment to delivering diverse and high quality content to players everywhere."

Great news for Vigil, however bad news still for fans of the Darksiders franchise; Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli stating his company will not be bidding on this IP.

Crytek did however purchase Homefront for $500,000 at the Thq auction last week.

Post Crysis 3 Games In The Series Could Move Away From Fps Genre
Crytek producer Michael Elliot Read recently stated that the Crysis franchise “definitely [has] a future” after Crysis 3 is released next month. While nothing has been confirmed, the producer mentioned that the studio is open to the idea of the next title in the series being something other than a first-person-shooter.

Read made the comment to Dusty Cartridge after he was asked if the developer intended to take a break from Crysis after Crysis 3‘s launch. His exact response reads:

“You know, I think at this point I don’t want to give anything away. But I think the Crysis franchise itself has life left in it. Whether it’s in a different game type format, whether it’s expanding upon this, it’s hard to say. That’s going to be up to the designers at the end of the day.”

“But I think we’ve built… Crysis was always intended...

TimeSplitters 4 Killed By Haze And Marketing Department Resistance
Two former Free Radical staffers have revealed that TimeSplitters 4 was in early production prior to the studio’s closure (and subsequent acquisition by Crytek in 2008), however, the poor reception of Haze and resistance from marketing teams blocked their efforts to find a publisher for the shooter.

Speaking to GamesTM, TimeSplitters co-creator Steve Ellis stated:

“TimeSplitters 4 was in the very early stages of development when Free Radical went into administration. A small playable demo was shown to several publishers, but it didn’t attract any publishing deals.”

Karl Hilton, a former Free Radical employee and current Crytek UK managing director, also spoke with the magazine about the TimeSplitters 4 demo, adding:

“We pitched [Timesplitters] to a lot of publishers, and from each of them we got the same two responses. Firstly, they would ask what happened with Haze. We were the company that made a series of high-rated shooters and then we had released Haze,...

TimeSplitters HD Collection Might Happen If 300K Sign Petition
Crytek’s CEO, Cevat Yerli has stated that a TimeSplitters HD Collection might be a possibility if a new online petition is able to reach its goal of 300,000 supporters.

Yerli made the comment to Game Informer during a recent interview after he was asked about the future of the TimeSplitters IP. The CEO’s exact response to the question reads:

“There is actually a petition running online trying to bring the fan base together. But unfortunately the petition doesn’t look that convincing. If the petition picks up it will be an even better argument for us. At a personal level, I’m a big fan of Timesplitters 2. For me, I would love to see the game out there, as a newborn HD version or what not. I definitely would love to see it. Crytek: TimeSplitters 4 Interest Is Not High Enough
In a recent interview, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli was asked about the status of the often-rumored-to-be-in-development TimeSplitters 4. Yerli once again shot down rumors of a new game, but did dangle a little bit of hope for fans of the classic shooter.

“I tested through my official blog to see how big the TimeSplitters community is, and while the volume of responses was quite high, we feel it’s not high enough yet. That being said, it did indeed trigger a deeper evaluation of what we do with TimeSplitters, and I can only say this for now; we might have some surprises coming soon.”

In the past, Yerli has mentioned the possibility releasing a non-retail TimeSplitters game, but has always been very careful to make it clear that nothing is in the works right now. As disappointing as the above statement is, that last sentence is the most positive “official” news...

Crytek Announces a Bright, Free-to-Play Future For Console Gamers
The free-to-play model has been working pretty well for a while now. From Facebook games like Farmville to fully fleshed titles like Tribes: Ascend and Age of Empires Online, free-to-play is pushing its way to a varied forefront in the world of desktop gaming. But why should it be restricted to our desktops?

After the announcement that every game they put out following Crysis 3 will be free-to-play, CEO of the technical powerhouse Crytek, Cevat Yerli, stated that he hopes not only to bring the developer’s huge Aaa games to a free-to-play PC market, but also to consoles. There are, however, a few obstacles to overcome.

The main issue holding them back, as Cevat sees it, is the relationship between digital and boxed retail. In order for stores to make a decent amount of money out of the industry, they need to sell boxed games – something they wouldn’t be...

Homefront 2 Is Being Developed In Isolation
Released last year to much anticipation followed by an awful lot of dissapointment, Homefront was unfortunately the death-toll for Kaos Studios. However, Thq didn’t want the IP to die with them, and since then development has been handed over to the experienced hands of Crytek. With the recent restructuring of Thq, new fears over the security of the series have been raised.

However, speaking with Cvg, Crytek’s CEO Cevat Yerli has said that there has been no “tangible change whatsoever” in their relationship with the publisher:

“To be fair, the way we’re developing Homefront 2 is very isolated anyway. We’re treating it as our own new IP and at the same time Thq is respecting us and saying, ‘you guys know what you’re doing’ and telling us the story they’d like to have, which we’re collaborating creatively on.”

Crytek Dismissed Wii U Power Concerns
Speaking with Cvg, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli lays out his views on Nintendo’s upcoming new console, the Wii U. Yerli has riled against the opinion that the Wii U is not very powerful, going on record to state that the Wii U is at a minimum, on par with the Xbox 360.

From my perspective I do not understand the public’s concerns that the Wii U is weaker than PS3 and 360. That I cannot see. From my perspective the Wii U is minimum as powerful as Xbox 360.

My opinion of the Wii U is very high. It’s just that we didn’t have a business case unfortunately that justifies us making a game for it.

Crytek Says CryEngine Has Been At Unreal Engine 4 Level For Three Years
Crytek was pulling no punches in an interview with VentureBeat today, saying that the CryEngine has been at the same level as the newly-announced Unreal Engine 4 for “around three years,” according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli.

“What we put out there [three years ago] is pretty much what Unreal Engine 4 put out now. And what many others are doing now too,” Yerli said. “We haven’t really put out our latest stuff yet.”

Yerli went on to tease the inevitability of the latest CryEngine saying:

“Pretty soon you’re going to see the next iteration of CryEngine, and I’m not putting a number behind it, just the next iteration of CryEngine. Very soon. But we already said, CryEngine 3 is next-gen ready since three years ago. We stand by that. If I look at what people call next-gen technology now, it’s what we were seeing three years ago. “

Crytek Boss Talks Timesplitters 4

In a recent interview Crytek’s CEO Cevat Yerli talked about the future of the Timesplitter franchise:

F2P Watch: Crytek Going Free-to-Play After "Crysis 3"
In an interview with Videogamer.com Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli decries Dlc and premium gaming models, opts for a "free-ish" model for all post-Crysis 3 releases.

"As we were developing console games we knew, very clearly, that the future is online and free-to-play." That's Yerli's line on the near future of gaming. What this means for the quality and types of games Crytek develops is that it'll pretty much be business as usual for the studio known for its graphically-intensive releases. Their first title under this model will be Warface, a multiplayer Fps.

So does this mean that Crytek is done with with single-player games? Typically F2P titles rely on that sweet, sweet competitive aspect to get user buy-in for customization, weapons, and content, but at this point, Crytek ain't saying much about their plans on this front. Will future Crytek releases be ad-supported? Microtransaction-based? I've reached out and hope...

Crytek are working with Thq for Homefront 2
When Thq released Homefront earlier this year, its reception was lukewarm at best. Gamers enjoyed the game's large and expansive settings, and Homefront had a good sense of theatre that made it pretty entertaining, but it was ultimately let down by its poor controls, sub-par graphics and incredibly irritating NPCs.

But, despite the game selling reasonably well, Thq shut down Kaos Studios, Homefront's original developers, soon after the game was released, pretty much killing all hope of a sequel. Now though, Thq's director Danny Bilson has confirmed that Homefront 2 is coming, and that it is now being developed by Crytek, the company behind Far Cry and the PC-crushing Crysis series.

The details past that are rather limited, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has said that Thq has given them a lot of 'creative freedom' with the game, allowing them to take it in the directions that they want. Hopefully this means...

'Homefront' Sequel Under Development By Crytek
Unexpected press release of the day: Crytek, the team behind the "Crysis" franchise, are developing the sequel to addled Thq property "Homefront." Now, that's not to say that another game in the series was entirely unanticipated; Thq's Danny Bilson definitely gave the impression during our E3 interview that he wanted to see the franchise continue. This is potentially exciting news, as a developer of this caliber could really turn things around.

"Homefront" released to somewhat poor reviews earlier this year, but the game actually sold rather well during its early launch weeks. It was a game plagued with technical issues and an incredibly short campaign that didn't exactly inspire our reviewer. The game's developer, Kaos Studios, was shuttered by Thq this summer. But now the series has a well-respected team at the helm, and that certainly feels hopeful.

"We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity, and production values...

'Crysis 2' Editor Out This Summer, Free CryENGINE Sdk Coming In August
Aspiring game developers got some great news today from Crytek. The "Crysis 2" dev announced that editing tools for the PC version of the game will be coming out way early this summer. Then, in August, Crytek will be releasing a free version of the software development kit for its CryENGINE game engine for creating entirely new content within CryENGINE 3, which is what powers the recently released "Crysis" sequel.

The news comes from an open letter posted at Crymod.com by company CEO and president Cevat Yerli. It seems that the Crymod forums are down right now for "some software upgrades," and they won't be returning until April 29, at the earliest. To tide fans over, Yerli shared the news of the upcoming releases in his letter to the fans.

The "Crysis 2" editor, as previously mentioned, will be coming "in early summer." Using it will allow fan-modders to "build maps, items and...

"Crysis 2" Blows Up Manhattan Today
Insert Credit endeavors to suss out where you should be allotting your video game allowance, sifting out a single title from many and crowning it as The One Game You Need to Get This Week. Don't consider these reviews, gentle reader. Rather, think of Insert Credit as a mix of hands-on time, informed opinion and intuition.

For the week of March 22, 2010, you should insert credit into: "Crysis 2."

Being the cultural capital of the world brings a lot of attention to New York City. Hell, Cevat Yerli--the CEO of the Crytek development house that made the hit "Far Cry" and "Crysis" games--thinks the Big Apple represents the pride of humanity. So, of course, aliens will want to blow it the eff up.

The sequel to one of the most amazing-looking PC games in recent memory does more than just look pretty as it jumps to consoles. It got a paranoid...

Crytek: “PS3 and 360 Holding PC Back”
It’s something that hardened PC gamers have been arguing for years.

Crytek boss Cevat Yerli has claimed that PCs are capable of obliterating the PS3 and Xbox 360′s innovative technology, and that the PC is “already a generation ahead.”

Speaking to Edge about Crysis 2′s move away from PC exclusivity and development across all three platforms, Yerli expressed his frustration at the lack of support for the PC.

“As long as the current console generation exists and as long as we keep pushing the PC as well, the more difficult it will be to really get the benefit of both,” Yerli told the latest issue of Edge.

“PC is easily a generation ahead right now. With 360 and PS3, we believe the quality of the games beyond Crysis 2 and other CryEngine developments will be pretty much limited to what their creative expressions is, what the content is. You won’t...

Crysis 2 In 3D, Your Face
Crytek, the current industry-leaders in 3D game engine technology, announced earlier this week that Crysis 2 will indeed have Stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) enabled when the game ships this holiday.

Just one day prior to EA press event at E3 earlier this week, Crytek’s President and CEO, Cevat Yerli, told USA Today:

“The success of 3D movies like Avatar and the introduction of 3D TVs from the hardware manufacturers tells us that this is the next big movement in entertainment, much like HD was years ago. For games especially, 3-D gives gamers an increased level of immersion, which can enhance an intense experience like Crysis 2.”

This hardly comes as a surprise given the sudden upsurge in industry heads force-feeding us 3D as the next great techology leap. Crysis 2 is being developed on the CryENGINE 3 platform, which itself was the subject of much lyrical waxing prior to this year’s Gdc...

'Crysis 2' to support 3D gaming
Crytek has reportedly confirmed that upcoming first-person shooter Crysis 2 will be playable entirely in 3D. Speaking to USA Today, the studio's chief executive Cevat Yerli said that the recent success of 3D entertainment products has encouraged Crytek to take the plunge. "The success of 3D movies like Avatar and the introduction of 3D TVs from the hardware manufacturers tells us that this is the next big movement in entertainment, much like HD was years ago," Yerli said. Crytek Wants in on Move and Natal Action
The much-lauded PC developer Crytek, who will soon be bringing you Crysis 2, have had a taste of console development and now they want more. They recently announced they’re working on some games for the Move and the Natal. If they put as much care and detail into this project, Natal skeptics might be changing their minds.

Cevat Yerli, the Turkish CEO of the Germany based company had this to say about his plans for the future:

“[We've been] working very closely with Sony and Microsoft in regards to motion control on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, [and] that’s as much as Nda [non-disclosure agreement] allows us to say right now”.

Yerli also confirmed that the Crysis Engine will support motion control technology, which means we’re not just talking games, we’re talking first-person shooters.

So it’s not much, but given Crytek’s stellar past have got to give these guys the benefit of the doubt.

Crysis 2 Not Dumbed Down Due to Consoles
PC gamers, who are afraid that the popular Crysis series will become oversimplified and suffer in quality due to the simultaneous development of console versions, have nothing to fear. Crysis 2 will not be an experience that is drastically changed to meet console-gamer standards. In fact, the “brutality” of the console market will allegedly help shape Crysis 2 into a superior experience over its predecessor.

Crytek Studios CEO, Cevat Yerli, spoke to Kotaku about developing Crysis 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 alongside the PC version and he explained that because the console gamer is more critical of his/her products, the developer was convinced it needed to create gameplay that is more streamlined and accessible. When asked about the possible “dumbing down” of the game in order to make it work on consoles, Yerli had this to say:

That’s exactly what it is not. This is a tighter experience than ever before.

Crysis 2 Story Design
Crytek Studios is going to bring their A-game to the story of Crysis 2, especially after calling Modern Warfare 2’s plot a disappointment, and wants the “massive potential” in storytelling capability in video games to not go to waste. Crytek Studios CEO Cevat Yerli wanted Crysis 2’s story to resonate with gamers and chose New York City as the game’s setting because everyone had a notion of what the city is. The game would take players through recognizable locations within the city that will both have an impact on the player and on the city within the story.

Morgan will be doing his best to avoid any communication problems and wants to put gamers in a place with a reason and will make that reason entirely clear and compelling enough for you to want to move on. Interestingly enough, Morgan sees the Nanosuit 2 as a viable character on its own stating that it,...
