The mother of the late Whitney Houston and an accomplished singer herself, Cissy Houston passed away on Monday, Oct. 7 at her home in New Jersey.

She was 91.

Her family confirmed the news, as well as the cause of her death in a touching tribute which they shared with the press.

Cissy Houston, the two-time Grammy-wining gospel singer, mother of the late Whitney Houston and backup singer for acts ranging from Elvis Presley and Aretha Franklin to Jimi Hendrix, Paul Simon and Luther Vandross, died today of Alzheimer’s disease complications at her home in New Jersey. She was 91.

Her death was announced by her family.

“In our time of deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Emily ‘Cissy’ Houston, who transitioned today, Monday, October 7, at 10:30 a.m. Et, at her home in Newark, New Jersey, while under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease,” said the family statement, obtained by Deadline.

Houston was born Emily Drinkard on September 30, 1933, in Newark. The youngest of eight children, she launched her singing career in 1938 when she joined her sister Anne and brothers Larry and Nicky to form the gospel group The Drinkard Four.

While it follows the familiar beats and doesn’t shy away from the darker side of Houston’s life and career, the film is perhaps too devoted to Houston’s music to work as a compelling drama. Of the 144-minute running time, conservatively, forty (or more) minutes are devoted to lengthy restagings of Houston’s live performances. Given that Houston’s real vocals were used, that means star Noami Ackie is given little to do but mime to these performances. While Houston’s once-in-a-generation voice obviously can’t be imitated, it leaves Ackie too little time to inhabit the part effectively.

Bobby Brown Jr. had “flu-like symptoms” in the days leading up to his death, his father’s lawyer said in a statement provided to TheWrap.

Attorney Christopher Brown also passed along singer Bobby Brown’s brief statement about his 28-year-old son’s passing.

“Please keep my family in your prayers at this time. Losing my son at this point in our lives has devastated my family,” Bobby Brown said in a statement provided to TheWrap. “There are no words to explain the pain.”

“Bobby Brown Jr. was not feeling well a couple days before his death, with flu-like symptoms. Bobby Brown Jr. — the son of Bobby Brown and Kim Ward — has died, Sarah Ardalani, the public information officer for the L.A. County Department of the Medical Examiner-Coroner, confirmed for TheWrap. He was 28.

Brown Jr. was the half-brother of the late Bobbi Kristina Brown. He appeared on the Bravo reality show “Being Bobby Brown” when he was 13.

A spokesperson for Bravo did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment on Brown Jr.’s death.

Brown and Ward were together before the “My Prerogative” singer was engaged to Whitney Houston.

Born on Nov. 26, 1991, Brown Jr. was from Encino, California. He was found dead there on Wednesday at 2:03 p.m. Pt at a home in the 5200 block of White Oak Ave.

Foul play is not suspected in Brown Jr.’s death, the LAPD told press on Wednesday. The coroner’s examination is scheduled for today.

Attorneys for Bobby Brown and the estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown have filed suit in a New York court over the documentary “Whitney: Can I Be Me,” alleging that Showtime, the BBC and several other defendants violated their rights by improperly using footage from the production of the 2005 reality series “Being Bobby Brown.”

Brown’s lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court’s New York southern district, asks for $2 million from defendants Passion Pictures, Tracey Baker-Simmons, Wanda Shelley, B2 Entertainment and Simmons Shelley Entertainment, as well as Showtime and the BBC.

The suit claims that Brown and his late daughter appear in the documentary for more than 30 minutes despite never having signed releases for the footage. Contracts or releases they did sign for the filming of the lone season of Bravo’s “Being Bobby Brown” in 2005 didn’t carry over for any other usage, the claim maintains.

Bobby Brown promoted Bet’s “The Bobby Brown Story” at a place with a difficult history for him: The Beverly Hilton, the hotel where his ex-wife Whitney Houston died in 2012.

“There [were] no violent incidents between me and Whitney,” he claimed. “You’re mistaken. You’re completely wrong.”

This is the second time in less than a year that the 29-year-old has been arrested on domestic violence charges.
