He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2019 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to History. He was elected a Fellow to the FBA and FRSE. He is Emeritus Professor of Medieval History at the University of St. Andrews in St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland.
