Under-The-Radar 2020 Drama Movie Becomes Global Netflix Hit
Image
Independent drama Herself gains newfound success on Netflix's global top 10 three years after its release, surprising viewers with its low-profile cast and team. The movie's themes, similar to Netflix's hit miniseries Maid, likely resonate with audiences, potentially contributing to its popularity. Despite its smaller scale, Herself's accomplished director, Phyllida Lloyd, adds credibility to the movie and attracts attention from Netflix viewers.

The independent drama, Herself, becomes a Netflix hit three years after its release. The 2020 drama is about a woman who escapes her abusive husband and decides to build her own home after struggling to find housing for her and her children. Herself is directed by Phyllida Lloyd and stars Clare Dunne, Molly McCann, Ruby Rose O’Hara, and Ian Lloyd Anderson.

Three years after its release, Herself experienced a newfound success on Netflix's global top 10. The drama squeaked its way into the no. 10 slot, with 4.1 million views during...

Angeline Ball
Deadly Cuts review – Ortonesque Dublin comedy that’s more silly than funny
Angeline Ball
With violent gangsters, a gentrification storyline and a hairdressing competition, this movie can’t figure out what it wants to be

Here is a frantically overdone film that’s all over the place. The script feels weirdly undeveloped, as if it can’t figure out which of two different kinds of film it wants to be: gonzo violent black comedy or big-hearted romp about hairdressers saving their community from developers.

The setting is the fictional north Dublin district of Piglinstown. It’s a bit rough, but local businesses are the beating heart of the neighbourhood, including the Deadly Cuts hair salon, run by the fearless Michelle (Angeline Ball). Like everyone else, she is bullied by odious gangster Deano (Ian Lloyd Anderson) demanding ruinous protection money or the place gets smashed up. When this horrible individual swaggers into the salon one afternoon, a chaotic confrontation leads to violence and then a...

Clare Dunne
Herself review – Irish abuse drama turns into home-build heartwarmer
Clare Dunne
Clare Dunne stars in and writes this self-empowering story of a battered Dublin cleaner who builds her own house, directed by The Iron Lady’s Phyllida Lloyd

Clare Dunne is the young Irish stage and screen performer who takes a commanding role in this heartfelt and engrossing personal movie: she is the star and co-writer with Malcolm Campbell (who scripted Lenny Abrahamson’s What Richard Did). The director is Phyllida Lloyd, known for mainstream films like Mamma Mia! and The Iron Lady, and she shows a confident touch with both the subdued moments, the intestine-clenching spasms of domestic abuse and the big C-major chords of emotional uplift. It’s a really unexpected drama: unexpected for a heartwarmer, unexpected for a tough social-realist picture, these being the two genres in which it finds a Venn overlap.

Sandra (Dunne) is a young woman in Dublin who has had to separate from her...

Herself – Review
Image
As we begin to pack away the holiday decorations and head back to the mall for the inevitable returns, this new release reminds us of those unfortunate families that aren’t lucky enough to tackle such minor inconveniences. In fact, the mother at the center of this story is completely left to her own devices, without a family aside from a violently abusive ex. She’s now part of the “system”, relying on the government to aide her with the housing of her two grade-school aged tots. In order to keep a roof over their heads she’s nearly drowning in “red tape” and “check-ins’ with often clueless “pencil-pushers”. But what if she somehow built that “roof” and freed her kids from moving from one temporary shelter to the next. But without professional laborers can she construct a home all by Herself?

The film begins on a typically hectic day...

Amazon Studios Buys Phyllida Lloyd’s ‘Herself’ (Exclusive)
Amazon Studios has nabbed North American rights to Phyllida Lloyd’s “Herself,” an Irish drama about a woman who builds her dream house after escaping an abusive marriage, Variety has learned. The streaming service is planning a theatrical release for later this year.

The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival, where it enjoyed a warm reception and glowing reviews. Variety‘s Peter Debruge predicted that “Herself” could be a major awards season contender, writing, “I’m convinced this inspirational Dublin-set drama could go all the way. … Don’t be surprised if people are still talking about ‘Herself’ this time next year, when Lloyd could be the sixth woman to break the Oscars’ glass ceiling.”

Despite the reception, the Dublin-set film does present commercial challenges — namely, it lacks any big-name stars. Clare Dunne stars in the film and wrote the screenplay. She plays a woman with two adorable daughters (Molly McCann...

‘Herself’: Film Review
Phyllida Lloyd in Mamma Mia! (2008)
In 2008, opera director Phyllida Lloyd’s pop-cornball big-screen debut, “Mamma Mia!,” more than earned its exclamation point, grossing more than $600 million worldwide. Three years later, her more serious-minded follow-up, “The Iron Lady,” earned Meryl Streep an Oscar. Most people would agree that was a not-too-shabby start for a helmer of any gender. But instead of making another movie, Lloyd went back to the stage, directing a trio of statement-making all-female Shakespeare productions.

Still, one wonders whether Lloyd’s sabbatical from cinema was by her own choice or by forces that seem none too keen on privileging women’s stories. Now she’s back with a movie called “Herself,” which is head-and-shoulders the strongest of the 20 Sundance films I’ve seen so far. It’s small and stars no one that anyone in Hollywood would consider “bankable,” but I’m convinced this inspirational Dublin-set drama could go all the way: . Don...

‘Herself’ Review: Phyllida Lloyd’s Empathetic Domestic Abuse Drama Earns Its Tears
Ian Lloyd Anderson in Cold Case Collins
Carefully written on the inside of a child’s toy box made to look like a cozy country house, there is a simple message: a name, a phone number, and a desperate plea to call the cops, should said message ever be revealed. Sandra (Clare Dunn) has placed it there, knowing that the abuse she suffers at the hands of her husband Gary (Ian Lloyd Anderson) will one day veer into deadly territory, a last ditch idea for salvation. It’s that toy house that saves Sandra’s life, thanks to her trustworthy eldest daughter Emma (Ruby Rose O’Hara) running it to a local convenience store during her parents’ worst row ever, and it will be a real house that finally frees her in Phyllida Lloyd’s empathetic drama, “Herself.”

Co-written by Dunne alongside “What Richard Did” screenwriter and frequent TV scribe Malcolm Campbell, “Herself” traces Sandra’s journey from...

Game of Thrones (2011)
'Game of Thrones' Season 5, Episode 2 Trailer
Game of Thrones (2011)
Following last night's Season 5 premiere, "The Wars to Come", HBO has released a trailer for next week's all-new episode of Game of Thrones titled "The House of Black and White". The footage reveals that Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), who left Westeros and set sail for Braavos on the other side of the Narrow Sea, finally makes it to her destination. Arya has been searching for Jaquen H'gar, and it seems she may be finally reunited with him in this episode.

The trailer also teases that Cersei (Lena Headey) will burn cities to the ground if 'they' touch her daughter. The Lannisters have received an ominous message from, most likely, the Martell's, who appear to be threatening the life of Cersei's daughter Myrcella, who has been shipped off to marry a prince in Dorne. Their arrangement has some new complications, though it isn't confirmed that it is in fact the Martell's...

'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Episodes Leak Online
Game of Thrones (2011)
HBO's Game of Thrones returns tonight with the Season 5 premiere "The Wars to Come", airing at 9 Pm Et tonight. While many fans are waiting with bated breath for the premiere, HBO has confirmed that the first four episodes of Season 5 have leaked online. Here's what the network had to say in a statement.

"Sadly, it seems the leaked four episodes of the upcoming season of Game of Thrones originated from within a group approved by HBO to receive them. We're actively assessing how this breach occurred."

The episodes were uploaded to several different Torrent sites on the internet last night, just one day before the premiere, and shortly after post-production producer Greg Spence discussed the likelihood of the episodes leaking early. Watch What 'Game of Thrones' Looks Like as a Kids Cartoon
Game of Thrones (2011)
Game of Thrones is arguably one of the most popular shows on TV today, with legions of devoted fans eagerly awaiting the Season 5 premiere, "The Wars to Come" on Sunday, April 12 at 9 Pm Et on HBO. Anyone who has watched the show knows it certainly isn't for the faint of heart, and most definitely not for children. But why should the young ones be left out of all the fun? For those who have ever pictured the show as a Saturday morning cartoon, you're in luck, since author George R.R. Martin has debuted a new video with the TBS talk show Conan, entitled Lil Thrones.

The humorous two-minute video still features all of the bloody beheadings, poisonings and other gruesome deaths that fans are used to, but formatted as a cheery animated show, complete with a song-and-dance routine. Beloved characters such as Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), Cersei (Lena Headey), Robb Stark...

The massive statue in Meereen comes crumbling down as both Tyrion and Arya start their new lives across the Narrow Sea in three new trailers for Season 5 of Game of Thrones, debuting Sunday, April 12 at 9 Pm Et with "The Wars to Come". As you may recall, the Game of Thrones Season 4 finale showed both Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Arya (Maisie Williams) leaving Westeros, but whether they will find solace across the Narrow Sea remains to be uncertain. While these trailers do not divulge too much information about this season's plot, we do get plenty of action.

In the new season, Jon Snow is struggling to balance the demands of the Night's Watch with those of the newly arrived Stannis Baratheon, who styles himself the rightful king of Westeros. Meanwhile, Cersei scrambles to hold on to power in King's Landing amidst the Tyrells and the rise of a religious group led by the enigmatic High Sparrow,...

Seth Meyers & Jon Snow Throw 'Game of Thrones' Dinner Party
With the Season 5 premiere of HBO's hit series Game of Thrones just a few days away, series star Kit Harington paid a visit to NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote the show. After the star's interview with Seth Meyers, fans were shown a pre-filmed sketch that shows what would happen if Jon Snow were to be invited to a New York dinner party. What follows is five minutes full of awkward conversations and, for those who haven't caught up with the show yet, plenty of spoilers.

The sketch features Seth Meyers trying to coach Jon on the art of "small talk," as his brutal stories from Westeros don't exactly translate well over a civil dinner table conversation. The sketch even teases one of the show's great mysteries, the identity of Jon Snow's mother, which has lead to countless fan theories sprouting up on the Internet. We also...

'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Stunts Featurette
Game of Thrones (2011)
With just over two weeks left until Season 5 of Game of Thrones debuts with "The Wars to Come", HBO has released a new behind-the-scenes preview that focuses on the elaborate stunt sequences. Stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam explains the process of creating these massive fight scenes, while explaining that Kit Harington (Jon Snow) does all of his own stunts, and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund) actually needs to be pulled back a bit because he is so intense. This featurette also gives us a new look at the Sand Snakes, Nym Sand (Jessica Henwick), Tyene Sand (Rosabell Laurenti Sellers) and Obara Sand (Keisha Castle-Hughes), with Rowley Irlam explaining that all three actresses had to be trained remotely, since they all live in different countries.

In Season 5, Jon Snow is struggling to balance the demands of the Night's Watch with those of the newly arrived Stannis Baratheon, who styles himself the rightful king of Westeros.

'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Clip: Arya Arrives at House of Black & White
Black and White (2002)
Back in December, HBO released a series of brief and vague clips from Season 5 of Game of Thrones, one of which appeared to show the door of The House of Black and White in Braavos. Last night, series star Maisie Williams appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she unveiled a new clip that showed Arya finally making it to The House of Black and White. At the end of Season 4, Arya set sail for Braavos, across the Narrow Sea, and this clip shows that her plan may have been in vain all along. Here's what she had to say on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about this scene.

2 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 Clips: Tyrion Confronts Varys
Game of Thrones (2011)
With just under one month left until the Season 5 premiere of HBO's Game of Thrones, the network has released two new clips, one of which reveals why the episode is entitled "The Wars to Come". The first scene features Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who escaped from Westeros at the end of Season 4, conversing with the man who helped him get out of King's Landing, Lord Varys (Conleth Hill). Since Varys is not related to the Lannisters in any way, Tyrion asks him why he arranged the escape. Varys reveals that he did what he did for the good of the realm, and that a man of Tyrion's talents will be needed in "the wars to come."

The second clip takes us north of the Wall, with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) talking to Mance Rayder (Ciar&#225n Hinds) about pride. This clip also references that Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) and his...
